Would the def ecm set a code if it doesn't have the updated firmware? My 2250 keeps setting code spn 5491 fmi 5 heater relay open or below normal. Found a wire rubbing on the frame and fixed that but it still has the same code. Its been like this for years i just keep clearing the code. We rewired the relay back to the def ecm to make sure it wasn't a wire issue and it still has the same code. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.
The firmware update only changed how long the pump ran after key off to pull all the def fluid back to the tank ( as far as i know) They never had "software" updates to this module to stop fault logging. The aftertreatment controller was not smart really it was only there because the ecm on the engine did not have the hardware capability to run the extra circuits until the 2350 ecm platform was released. The fault logic on FC3564 ( your spn/fmi) means the controller thinks the wiring or coil in the hose heater relay drive circuit is open. That is the wiring going to pin 86 through the relay coil and out 85. If you have no problems with the def hoses freezing in the winter the problem is probably the sensing circuit in the aftertreatment controller is failed. You should update your controller firmware if it has never been updated as it ran the pump longer after key off to make sure the def pump was emptied of def so it was not damaged by freezing. If that is all ok it is cheaper to clear the fault than replace the controller and shouldn't cause any issues.
Hello i have a 2012 freightliner m2 106 the truck went into derate and fault codes was loss of communication with acm and after two days truck was running again no problem but after a month truck derated again and had same fault code for acm not communicating I replaced the acm but still derated,does it need to be programmed

I’m not sure what engine you have if it’s called an ACM then I have no idea if it needs programmed or not Commons doesn’t use ACM’s

The sensor is part of your def float in the DEF tank. It is not a separate sensor but part of the three sensors- temp,quality, level.
