  • The DEF tank header contains three different sensors and a stainless or coolant acceptable heating coil. How do you know if that DEF tank header fails. It is also called the DEF float assembly. It is really a combination sensor. There are many shapes and sizes with port and plug locations in various configurations.

Thank you for doing these very informative Vids , I'm a car guy that has only entered the truck world recently and had a difficult time finding relevant information on the real world problems I faced and no one in my area seemed very knowledgeable, These Vids you are doing are GREAT , And I share them with our younger Guys !
Keep it up, they are very Appreciated!

Sadly it is true that "handmedown" knowledge is fast becoming a thing of the past. Companies rely on "online"new technologies to assist troubleshooting which is well and good. However we all learn differently. I was always visual and talk to me about it. My attack on sharing information is the 5 W's (who what where when and why). Please do comment on subjects that would help you. Im working on a website now that will host my blog because there is something about reading vs watching an old guy chatter LOL. Tell all your colleagues to Subscribe! and Thanks.

Another great topic and another very helpful video. Have not heard of the def tank procedure yet, that’s interesting. One question i have had,is when you see the resisters in a schematic, how do you know where to find it. Is there a rule of thumb for its location. Or do you just look for the termination end cap plugs

Generally speaking from experience. Cummins will use the termination triangle caps if the resistor is in the harness. Some OEMs will terminate with the same cap but we have found terminating resistors soldered in the harness and then heat shrink over it and harness tape over that. So knowing where it has to be in the circuit helps you to know where to look. The schematics are accurate but generic as to location. There is no standard among oems that pins down locations that I know of. Remember your ohm meter is your friend especially when you know the resistor should be 120 ohms so when you see that in a pin to pin check your on the right track hunting it down. Be sure to unplug all the modules on the 1939 bus or their respective internal resistances help to hide that resistor when trying to locate it with an ohm meter.

Engine shop joe I got a question about my Cummins engine I’m having code 2636 along with a bunch of after treatment code is it even possible to run the engine without the def system if the system fails

The final stage of derate for scr system *active* faults in engine only idles and 5mph max road speed. Emergency vehicles dont have the derate and off road machinery has a different set of derates but similar to the automotive. So it will run but its not really useable.
