An entire generation lay listening to him on John Peel, late at nightunder the blankets and finding a different world

I haven't heard Ivor for decades. Why is this so emotionally powerful?

The inimitable Ivor Cutler. Well-remembered from John Peel's radio programmes in the 70s.

Here, not only are melodic contours known and appreciated by the Hindoos, but also an absolutely
new harmonic material which brings us prisms, clusters of chords, thick chimes, and garlands of garlands. What strikes first of all in this music is, on the one hand, the penetrating charm of harmonic aggregations and, on the other hand, the absolute clarity of intervals!

"Discovered" by John Peel - Radio One. Priceless entertainment!

I was about 12 and would listen to John Peel, loving the aggressive early punk. Then occasionally some poetry or something would come on and I'd wait impatiently for it to end so we could get back to the guitars, and the shouting. Almost half a century later I totally love Ivor's work, but don't blame my younger self for not understanding.

“Look, a tree!” Growing up in rural Scotland, we would take mushroom trips regularly. We had this album on vinyl and would take the belt off the record player so we could do some ‘scratching’ and play selected parts backwards...Ivor’s work can reflect the stifling conformity of rural Scotland in the 70’s, and the challenge of being a bit different in such a time. I hope he is recognised for his genius eventually.

Ha ha, used to listen to Ivor (and Frank Zapppa) while we were on mushrooms as well. 70's Newcastle.

I saw Ivor Cutler perform several times at the Something-or-other Jazz Club in north London (Havestock Hill?). I remember that Mr Cutler would arrive on his bicycle, towing his harmonium behind him.
I did not understand, nor do I yet understand. One day I may do so. But in the meantime, I am enchanted.

The whole album has an unnerving feel (which definitely isn't a bad thing).

I had to go out and scoop sheep shit up in a fiels with a coal shovel for my dads tomato plant fertiliser mixture. Ivor was not so much funny but close to the mark.
