- This video is dedicated to Mimi Parker of the band Low who passed away this past weekend at the age of 55 due to Ovarian Cancer. In this video I talk about Low's music and their beautiful melancholy slowcore sound. She and her husband, Alan Sparhawk, cofounded the band in 1993 in Duluth Minnesota.

Lullaby is to me the best song ever written
I just left her funeral. It was extremely powerful yet so simple and disarmingly humble, just like their music. Her sister shared a story about how Mimi was more into trucks than dolls growing up. And she would "pick up" her their dolls in her toy truck. It makes sense considering she was a boss. Low changed the way I see music and the biggest reason I stayed in Duluth. Alan always said she was the flagship and he was right. The sturdy light that anchored the beauty in their music in the midst of the storm. Thank you Mimi.

@@Luminik_GG Yes. They were devout Mormons. I am and was raised Catholic, but God is God and the denomination didn't matter in that moment. Her spirit has been lifted on high man. It was at the LDS Duluth and it felt pitch perfect. Such a reminder of how less really is more. W a few beautiful touches. Or you know...Low :).
Rick, thank you so much for doing this tribute. I am from Duluth and a participant in the local music community. Duluth is reeling from this loss. While in some circles Low are known internationally, they have continued to immerse themselves whenever back here in Duluth throughout the arts community - always maintaining a close relationship with this town and so many artists within it. Overwhelming to see the out pouring of coverage for Mimi. The first time I saw her perform was at First Avenue in Minneapolis in the late 90’s. I had never seen anything like it. Your sincere and thoughtful video is SO much appreciated. 🙏🏼
Duluth represent! I didn’t make it to the festival this fall with them; huge bummer.
I feel silly that I didn’t know they were so well-known outside of the region. I should know better; Minnesota is much stronger for music than people realize.

sorry this is so random but here it goes... about a month ago I purchased around 12-14 cd's off ebay and included in those was 'long division'... being a 90's kid I could not believe I'd never heard Low (I've heard the name but not the band itself)... Anyway, listened to that on repeat, it is my 'go to work' soundtrack, it soothes me during heavy traffic, dropping kids at school, et al.... Still now, it hasn't left my car since that first day and then, I read about Mimi's passing.... Now, every time I hear it/her, it becomes harder.... why? I do not know, it's just crushingly unbearable... damn, I have a lump in my throat just by writing this! She'll be sorely missed.... definitely...
I was lucky to see them live three times in Spain. They were absolutely amazing creating unique atmospheres. I am very sorry to hear Mimi has passed away. 🙏
I have the cancer. Been fighting it since Feb 2022, I said the same thing; “I’m not a victim, people get cancer and I’m a people. it’s just my turn is all.” The fight is real and sometimes it gets almost too heavy. Music is powerful and I have to be careful or I might just say F it one day.

I had the chance to cover as a photograph a Low show in Mx City in a local Festival, Nrmal, in 2016. They had no roadies, so they setup their gear themselves.
There were some PA issues as they were finalizing their checksound. Alan was checking his watch constantly as they were supposed to start and the PA wasn't working, people in the festival couldn't listen. He asked us in the press area if we could listen to them and we said no. He turned back to Mimi and she told him "Alan, we have to start" . He then did something I have never witnessed before: He picked one of the heavy monitors he had in front of him, turned it to the people and started playing "Death of a Salesman" , as he was so commited to start on time the show. As the song progressed, the PA came back and their music blasted everyone. It was such an amazing moment.
Their set was mindblowing.
Mimi was awesome, as a drummer, as a singer, and as person. They were sonically so impressive, I became an instant fan. RIP Mimi

I wish there was such a word because goodness knows I've had plenty of bands like that. It's also sometimes compounded by a feeling of being not 'with it' because I was such a johnny-come-lately.
Somewhat of an epiphany.
Low were so consistently brilliant that I guess I had kinda started taking them for granted. Like it was a given that every two or three years there would be a fantastic new Low album. I had not known about Mimi's diagnosis and this was news that hit me unexpectedly hard. There will not be new another fantastic Low album now. Condolences to Alan and the family and Thank You for the music and the memories

I think one thing Rick glossed over is their amazing lyrical content. Songs like "Just Make It Stop" or "Death of a Salesman" have words that are just gut-wrenching.

Superfan of Low for decades. It must be mentioned they were INCREDIBLE live. That is how I discovered them- I was taken to one of their concerts by a friend. Came out in tears.
Their music will gently tear your heart out, dissect it, and somehow place it back into your chest. Did more for me than any shrink. My child’s first concert, too. RIP Mimi.
yes. they brought me to tears several times live. hugely influenced me musically as well. i never spoke to Mimi, i was too shy. but i did chat with Alan a couple of times. incredibly intense introvert and humble. i love them, they are one of my favorite bands of all time and i'm 61.
First discovered them in 2014. Couldn't believe they weren't the biggest band in the world.
Low is the band of my life. I found them in 1998 as a junior in high school, and have followed their work for nearly 25 years (my ages 16-42). They never stopped changing, always wanted to produce the best work they could, and made their most adventurous albums in the last 5 years. I was saddened to hear of Mimi's death, but am so enormously grateful for all the work they have created for us all. Thank you, Mr. Beato, for a moving tribute, and for giving quality exposure to a band that deserves it. And thank you to Mimi Parker, the most beautiful voice I ever heard in my whole life.

Spot on. I love all of their stuff, but those last three records were transcendent. I can't tell you how many times I've listened to them - and always in full and at high volume. I was lucky enough to see the band about 20 times live over 20 years and I always left with a full heart. Such a devastating loss.
Low is one of those indie bands that I found and listened to during a very difficult time. It's so sad that Mimi's passed away like this. RIP.

They are amazing... i am crushed i discovered them so late (2018, when Double Negative came out), the instantly became a must see...unfortunately that did not happen. I believe their amazing work will stand the test of time and live on for eons! Rest easy Mimi!

I love the way Alan and Mimi's vocal harmonies soar so gently with an ability to hold notes for a long time, creating a vast and specific texture to their songs.

Steven, I was at your last Velvets show at the Hook & Ladder - it was so great getting to hear VU songs live, you guys nailed it. The passing of Mim is just so sad, I still can't believe she's gone. I hope you are finding solace.

Had such a blast at that show, and having her there was so good, without her we all just scatter backstage and do our own thing until we go back on, but that night she held court in the main dressing room and everyone just hung out with her and cracked jokes. Two Step and Shame are two of the most beautiful sad songs I’ve ever heard. I’m so glad to have been introduced to Low. I’m so sorry to hear of Mimi’s passing. Such an ethereal voice.

One morning in 2000, my clock radio, set to a college station, woke me up to "2-Step," from their Secret Name album, and the profound beauty of that song was such that I'll never forget the experience. And I'd had no idea how many more beautiful songs were to come! Thank you, Alan and Mimi. ❤😢
I was three years old in 2011. And the album or the CD C'mon was one of my first memories in music. My parents had and still have the CD of this album and we always heard it in the car when we drove somewhere. It's one of the greatest Bands I've ever heard. I think my favourite album is The Great Destroyer. Greetings from Austria.

Their last two records blew my mind. Mimi had the most beautiful female voice I ever heard and the melodies she came up with were straight out of Dreamland. I listened to Hey What when my son was born. Holding him through the night while listening to All Night had me in tears many time. I hope this feeling will stay with me for all the years to come whenever I hear this song.
My jaw dropped and my hands froze when I heard Lullaby.
I have memory issues that only get worse as the years pass and.... I have forgotten a lot...
...a lot of things, many adventures, a lot of lonely summers and a lot of pain.
Music was my only solace. I finally know the song I heard in my dreams.
Hearing the song, hearing the song made me remember. It really put things into perspective.

Count me another one of the millions just gutted by Mimi’s passing, but also so thankful that music, beauty, art, people, like this exist.

I bought the CD because Thom Yorke listed it as one of his Desert Island Discs in a Tower Records magazine back around 2001.
I think Low is the best American band of the last 30 years.

Just found this video. Was heartbroken when I heard the passing of Mimi back then. I first saw them at Primavera festival back in 2010. It was such a beautiful performance. They left us with the legacy of some amazing music and Alan still makes music too. A fitting tribute Rick x

My wife and I had a special moment with the band several years. The members of the band wouldn’t remember, because we didn’t approach them. One evening they played The RecordBar in Kansas City. We got there way early and told staff we wanted to eat dinner so they let us come in and sit down. Shortly after, the band and families sat down like 3 tables away and had a quiet family dinner together before the bass player’s wife/ girlfriend took the kids away for the night (we assumed back to the hotel). In our own quiet way, we would steal glances at them while dining. As a fan, what a great moment to see them as family people, not even as musicians or as rock stars. Then about an hour or two later, they put on a fantastic show.
I still have a lot of Low’s discography to discover, but Hey What is a life changing record. It’s a pitch perfect entity that uses noise, distortion, and ambience in a way that feels familiar but completely new. The way Mimi’s voice soars over these sonic walls is breathtaking. Music won’t be the same without her
When I first listened to Hey What, I posted this on Facebook: "Finally got around to listening to the new Low album I had shipped on vinyl. It's not even really songs. It's Low watching the world explode into bits, and then trying to help mold back the shattered pieces. Must be played straight through, in the dark, and loud. As always, Mimi's voice (somehow especially when weaving under and past Alan's) is the most affecting, binding, and reaching component."

I saw Low a few years ago when they opened for Slowdive in Toronto (1st reunion tour). I had not seen any announcement about them being the opener, and I remember how electrifying it was when Mimi took her place behind the spare drum kit and I realized who was taking the stage. Her singing!!! (His too!) What a privilege to be in that audience! "C'mon" is one of the greatest albums of all time in my universe, and "Christmas" gets played every year.

That's why I'm following this channel for years. Never heard about them, now I'm a listener.
Mimi's passing hit me especially hard. Low is a band you either don't know or you love. Since then I've been re-listening to the albums I've listened to for years, as well as experiencing first listens of the ones I've never heard. Thank you so much for using your platform to bring attention to her unique and unforgettable contribution to music.
I was introduced to Low through an ex, and then I bought their album Things we lost in the fire in the early 2000s. I fell in love with them ever since, and I have been a huge fan of their music. I truly think that Alan, and Mimi are not music artist, but music pioneers. Their music has evolved throughout the years, and their songs are groundbreaking. Especially their album Hey What is nothing short of genius.
Great voice, amazing harmonies in the duets with her husband, so much creativity and re-inventing their style. Big loss, gone too early. „what part of me“ is one of my favs. 🖤
My favourite live band of all time. I saw them 20 times which virtually every time they came to the UK. Their gigs were always a wonderful experience. Mimi's voice was such a thing of beauty. My favourite gigs by them were the one's saw at The Union Chapel (a church in North London). Their sound was perfect for the venue. So sad that Mimi has died and thankful that she left such a legacy. It is hard to take that I will never see Low in concert again. RIP Mimi Parker and love to Alan and the family.
It's rare these days that a song hits so hard from the very first time I hear I'm forever haunted by it. That was Low's "Congregation". Mimi's passing is a tragic loss, and thank you Rick for using your audience to spread the word about a band that deserves to be far better known.

Ugh...I had no idea Mimi Parker had passed. I first saw Low open up for Sunny Day Real Estate in support of I Could Live In Hope. Her vocals were absolutely mesmerizing, and I was an instant fan. So sad for Alan and the family, and the music scene that she was a long-time member of. Far too young, she will be missed.

Rick, can’t thank you enough for covering Low. I consider myself to have been so fortunate to have seen them live several times. It was a musical journey and experience I will never forget. Their music has had such an impact on me. I was devastated to hear of Mimi’s passing … for Alan, for their kids, and for all of us Low fans who will never get to hear that heavenly voice and her harmonies with Alan live again. A light truly has gone out with her departure from this world. RIP Mimi … you are loved by so many!

I used to have a Low t-shirt that was just a quote and drawing by Mimi and Alan's young child. It said, "Where are going?" with a sad face. That feels poignant and heartbreaking now.

These last 3 records they made with BJ Burton at Bon Iver’s studio are just breathtaking. Aggressively distorted, lyrically stark, dramatic in the best way.
Some of their live shows in the last 5 years on UA-cam have been jaw-dropping.

I caught them for the first time in 1999 in a coffee shop/venue. They were beautifully and unexpectedly quiet and stripped down for what I was used to at the time. I managed to sit in a corner alone in a big comfy soft chair and fell asleep in the best way possible. RIP Mimi. Sorry for such an intense loss Alan and family/friends.

Low is so great. I've been rediscovering their early catalog since Mini Parker's death. It's stunning. Try "The Plan," especially the live version floating around UA-cam. Brilliant.
i was supposed to see LOW in the UK this week before they announced the cancellation of their tour. i'd been thinking about it, thought it was going to be the best concert i'd ever go to, but then the news came on the very same day my best friend's grandma passed away...
i spent the rest of the day listening to "Point of Disgust" from their album Trust (2002), because Mike Hadreas (Perfume Genius) tweeted about it. such a beautiful and delicate song.
it was a very sad day indeed but im glad i knew both of these amazing women, one personally, the other through her beautiful and life-changing art.

I saw Low open for Slowdive several years ago and slowly got into them. So damn beautiful and so very underrated. Thank you brother Rick for shining a light on indie rock.
I also want to thank you Rick for making me aware of Low. I was born and raised in Minnesota, lived in Hibbing, I was very young and Robert Zimmerman lived there at the time. I never met him to my knowledge. I lived in Duluth and went to college there but left for the west in the eighties.
I was familiar with incredible groups like Willie and the Bees also Lamont Cranston but now I must explore Low.
I read about her death and was amazed at the impact Low had on music. It is always sad to witness the passing of a musician of such amazing talent.
The thought that I won't hear songs that mean so much to me in a live setting again truly feels like a wound, a wound I'm not sure will ever scar over. What a mountainous loss to music and to her family and friends.
One of the best bands of the last 30 years, any genre. I would deliberately avoid listening to tracks released in advance of a new album so I could preserve as much surprise as possible when first listening to a record, and they never disappointed. Their live performances left me speechless. I’m lucky to have seen them, and heartbroken to know I never will again.

Amazing band and the nicest couple ever. Everyone interested in music production has to listen to Low’s last 2 albums, Double Negative and the last one. Production is risky, innovative, noisy but beautiful… astonishing. They use heavy noise and extreme gating to create these mesmerizing pulsating rythm. Mind blowing.
I just found Mimi and Low from their guest vocals on Swans’ song Lunacy, their vocals on that song will haunt me forever. I’m gutted

This is a huge gut punch & the first I have heard of her passing & it is absolutely heartbreaking,. Both Alan & Mimi come across as such beautiful people who made such gorgeously hopeful yet melancholy music. RIP Mimi & strength to Alan & their children.

Low were incredible and mean so much to me. I am devastated about Mimi. "Just Make it Stop," "Especially Me," "The Plan," and every moment of the first album are on repeat for me.
We in Minnesota have had the privilege to have them as a local music act I have seen them live maybe 20 times in intimate settings and in larger club venues over past 25 yrs or so. So sad to hear of Mimi’s passing. Glad you have learned how special they are.
I heard Lullaby for the first time a few years ago around the end of an emotional school year. I’m a teacher, and I remember being really sad to see the kids go after a great year, and I was playing music on my desktop while I was cleaning my classroom, and that came on the shuffle on UA-cam. It haunted the early parts of my summer.
This was a band that could completely take over a room. If it was a bar, the staff would also quiet down. They were so down-to-earth you couldn't hero worship at all, but there were times during their set you felt like you were at a rare, great event.
Glad to see you feature Low. I'm happy to have stumbled upon them in the early 2000s when "The Great Destroyer" was released. It was a totally new sound for me at the time that I really came to love

I saw them at the water is life festival back in september and it was life changing. they have been a big influence on my own songwriting and will continue to be.

Thank you Rick for highlighting such an amazing artists, and it’s so tragic that Mimi is gone. I love their entire body of work, but Things We Lost in the Fire” in 2001 was their peak for me. That’s a special album and their voices are beautiful on songs like Sunflower. But as you pointed out, they made interesting music throughout their career.
I grew up loving this band, and i'm heartbroken Mimi has died. Great video.
This is the first time I ever heard this band and I think they sound good. I like their music. I will be checking them out.
