What's particularly great about this show is how respectful and sensitive Dave Allen is. These days the host of such a show would be mugging outrageously to the camera inviting the audience to share his derision.

Stephen Charman That's so very true. Allen doesn't give the slightest impression that he is any way the subject of the programme. Unimaginable today.

This also struck me when I first saw this on TV a few years back, Stephen. He doesn't sneer at his interviewees ; just shows you their eccentricity in kind of almost affectionate way. A class act. Can you image the likes of Peter Kay hosting a program like this without winking to the audience ? Life would be duller without characters like these and that's what Dave Allen instinctively knew. God bless his memory.

Also, the people fearured are very well mannered. Very intelligent. No one would be allowed to make a programme like this today unless it was perported to be on a medical basis.

@Patrick Ancona Don't judge a generation by it's most visible, noisy members. Most people remain sane and decent, you just don't see it because those people aren't seeking your attention

You are dead right, Dave Allen was a gent and had class and empathy. Interviewers today interrupt, do most of the talking, are aggressive, self interested, arrogant and....as must be for such people.....of dimly lit intelligence.

What a wonderful patchwork quilt of people. We were all 'eccentric' once, when we were children. Unfortunately most of us conform to whatever is considered normal in the particular society we live in. How refreshing to see ones with a pure passion for something that genuinely makes them feel vibrantly alive. Thank you for uploading this. Stay strange everybody!

Of course they want automatons in school. I was constantly labelled an 'individualist' as though that was a bad thing. The fact I was a good student, passed all my O Levels and was a very good all round sportsman, despite my blue flat top, seemed secondary to the fact. I was a danger for being an individual

Yes, it reminds me of a similar documentary by the late Sir Patrick Moore who interviewed all sorts of oddballs (one famously claimed to be able to speak and write Venusian) without any judgement or mockery, just polite understanding.

I didn't know.his programme existed. An ATV programme from the archive always has interest for me .It was common practise in factual programmes for the editing to be more restrained allowing longer pieces and time for the audience to either be more engaged or sometimes bored .. Evan as a child I enjoyed these leisurely paced TV programmes.and drama often had the same slower and more enjoyable in my view for the more natural style

A wonderful documentary. Dave Allen shows genuine interest and affection. We have lost our way in consumer society and the need to conform. Allen disliked his time being indoctrinated at religious school, was not for authoritarianism or forcing people how to think- a very clever guy.

What a wonderful vintage documentary. People daring to be who they are, without caring about what others think of them. I think Dave Allen was an eccentric also, in his own way. Had a comedy style very much of his own and he brought a very different style to documentaries, as can be clearly seen here. He displays a total lack of judgement and just allows it to flow.

According to Wikipedia, the box lived in by Mr Alexander Wortley was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's smallest habitable permanent residence. And the elderly gent with the animals (Mr Snowy Farr) was made an MBE for his services to charity and is now commemorated by a statue in his native Cambridge. Amazingly he lived until 2007!

I have so much love and respect for them all. As a child in the 70's I relished my eccentricity. Now, I hope to bring this world to 2023. Eccentrics Unite! A perfectly made show and much love to all in it. Well done Dave Allen. Remembered fondly.

I don't see them as neuro-divergent or any of these other modern day labels (that seem only too willing to be medicated to keep them indoors, out of sight, out of mind and quiet).
These are people who are determined to live the lifestyle of their dreams, and I find it a great pity that these people will have faded away now - and society has turned into what it is today.
We are all the poorer for the loss of the eccentrics: the homeless man dressed like a 1920's dandy who used to sell his own paintings under the bridge, the very unkempt tramp that lived in the hedgerows but turned out to be a millionaire with a dusty mansion, the old lady who would put on a performance of singing and dancing like a ballerina before she fed the pigeons, the wonderfully mustached old men in their colourful home-made waistcoats on market day.
We seemed to lose all of that at the turn of the century.

A curious program full of interesting people that would now be medicated up to their eyeballs. The ultimate guy for me was the pilot, I wonder how many hours a day he flies for? Years ago a friend used to make me cassette tapes of mixed music and on one of them he'd put Ivor Cutler singing 'I think very deeply...' so it was amazing to put a face to the voice for the first time.
Anyway, thanks for posting this collection of eccentric's and their womenfolk.

I'm pretty sure the guy in the flying jacket was the late, great Amazing Mr Smith. I was lucky to see him perform at Deal Folk Club a few years ago. What they don't show on this programme is that he was a wonderful guitarist who also made his own instruments such as a condom powered bag pipes. His catch phrase was: "You can't buy this in the shop, you know". There are some vids on YT of him playing, well worth a watch. Loved the vid, thank you for sharing.

The great Ivor Cutler starts at 32:07 in a rare interview. A lovely, respectful technique of interviewing pretty much lost today - listening and pausing enough to let the interviewee elaborate. You can see Dave having to hold himself in during Ivor's Old Oak Tree. The tape recording at the zoo cracks me up, as does the drawing of the elephant.

Seems to me that these wonderful folks were united by a kind of childish innocence and an immersion in something that lets them feel alive and truly be themselves. Perhaps there is much to learn as a member of today's "sophisticated" society. Many thanks from Sydney - Dave

The vicar reminded me a little of the Alan Bennett vicar sketch in 'Beyond the Fringe'. I can only find the audio. It's snortingly funny.
