We Crash Our Drone and Get Kicked Out of an Anchorage - Episode 75
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 сер 2024
- In this episode, we take our dinghy to Rio Sierpe, the gateway to the largest mangrove sanctuary in Latin America to look for crocodiles. Our search is a bit unsuccessful as we run are dinghy aground and crash our drone. We then sail to Bahia Uvita and experience what may possibly be the worst anchorage we've stayed in. We decide to visit the beach but we are forced to leave immediately. Thanks for coming along on this adventure!

That’s amazing you were able to find the drone…and recovered it with all toes, fingers, appendages intact! Gary is brave to be swimming! The videos continue to be great! Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks, Robert! Yeah we couldn't believe Gary was able to find it and get it flying again! So thankful for his willingness to always just go for it!
I just got back from spending a week with Delos in Mexico and they introduced me to Brook and Gary. Brian and Karin assured me that I would love these guys and they couldn't be more right. I love the energy and vibe that they have. I'm super excited to get to hangout with you guys in Annapolis in October. I'm happy to be your newest subscriber and can't wait to follow your adventures.
Hey Ryan! Ah wow thanks for the awesome comment! It was so nice to meet you and we are looking forward to seeing you in a few months! Fun times ahead! ⛵🤩
I loved the puppy dogs just chillin on the steps! So sweet! God bless you guys. Love the kindness and positive attitudes from you both!! Jason
The dogs are so chill! We love seeing them too! Thanks, Jason!
Keep up the great work, you’re one of the best sailing channels out there, love how genuine you both are.
Ah thanks, Mike! We really appreciate it! Cheers!
Park ranger was probably wanting money, as my past experience’s suggests but that’s a delicate subject. Good luck 👍
We have found that in some cases but there was no negotiating in this situation. Oh well! We are always learning and going with the flow out here!
I can’t believe you actually found that drone in there Gary. Right on!
We can't believe it either! Not only did he find it but he was able to get it flying again! 😲
Oh shit I didn’t realize that! Good on yas
That was a very good episode,a lot of things happened to you.Hope you get your drone working properly. Thanks for sharing 🙏
Thanks, Mark! The drone still isn't 100% but it is usable at least!
I bet you guys are glad you did this when you were young. Thank you for your adventures so I can live them with you.
Hey there! Thank you! Yes, we are very fortunate to be able to do this at a fairly young age. We see sailors who are much older than us out here all the time and we always commend them as it can be very demanding physically.
Well don't let those kind of things get you down. Hi from Texas! Be safe and have fun. :)
Thanks, John! That's right....just sail on! ♥️
Loosing electronics to water is never fun so thought i drop some knowledge that may help people in the future... and sailing channels probably have lots of people in risk of this ;)
For most people the following checklist can save lots of electronics if done quickly:
1. Disconnect battery, and DO NOT plug back in until after step 4.
2. Dry it out for a day or so, but not too warn!
W0W!
Thanks for sharing all this! This is pretty much exactly the process I followed, and I was shocked that it actually brought the drone back to life. There was a lot of corrosion and salt residue on all the boards, so I took everything apart and cleaned it with alcohol and a toothbrush, especially any connectors or pins.
I think I got lucky in that the drone hit branches first, which likely caused it to shut down all the motors. If the motors had been running when it splashed, I'm sure it would have shorted the motor control board.
@@SailingOneLife Makes me happy to have helped at least one person!.. :)
Hitting the branches probably helped quite a bit as that would have shut down high current from going to the motor-controllers.
Adding a bit more details for others that probably got missed in my first post :)
Shorting is not the issue even in salt-water, but it's the corrosion that speeds up really fast when you have electricity applied. Those tiny copper-tracks does not take very long before they are completely gone. This is why it's so important to stop current from flowing (disconnecting the battery).
It's the same thing as when having a steel-hull and having stray currents... Larger currents = faster corrosion.
Do be careful if using a stiff toothbrush as that may pull of small components with damaged solder-joints.. A spray-bottle can be helpful in areas with smaller components.
And do try to bring it into a repair-shop that has a PCB cleaner for a proper cleaning when possible as that may prolong the remaining life a bit more.... If you just bring the PCB's that's a $5 to $20 job... Most places that does cellphone/laptop component repair should be able to do it.
Sharing is caring! And wanted to give something back for the nice videos! :D
Thanks, Patric! I really appreciate the detail in your response! Hopefully I won't have to use this info anytime soon! 😬
Wild adventures await around every port!!! Glad you guys were able to find the drone, that was a win for sure. The fact it still works (sort of) is even crazier!
Thanks! Yeah we can not believe that the drone is 'semi' working after that!
Aloha from Chicago, happy to see a new episode. Gonna watch on the big screen, have fun guys.
On the big screen?! Wowza! How does it look on there?! We are always watching on our laptop! Cheers to you in Chicago, Dane!
Wow, all those peeps on the sandbar - how cool! Nother great vid, thanks G+B!
Thank you! 🤙⛵
I'd submerge that drone in a bag of rice for a few days to dry out all the moisture, glad you found it, surprised me.
We were pretty surprised Gary found it as well! And even more surprised he was able to get it flying again, although a bit shakey!
Loved 🥰
In the United States, no license is needed. It is a requirement in other countries though. Glad you gained some insight from the video, cheers!
Rat farts, on a few notes. And why the heck aren't drones water proof yet for Pete's sake. Amazing the differences in water from place to place. Still amazed at both of your talents in repairs, prep, research etc. I'm convinced an engineer and a finance major are the perfect combo for this lifestyle. Love and miss!!!
Hey Mol! There actually are waterproof drones on the market but we've heard they aren't great for the price!! Thanks for always building us up out here! Love & miss! ♥️
What a great vid, great seeing you 2 as well. I can tell you, as a guy, there are 2 things that can get me in that water: retrieving the drone is one and I am sure, Brooke, you can guess what the 2nd is. 😉
😲🤦🤣
the people that Live IN these exotic places should remind us in the west and "civilization" in general of how fortunate we are. They're simple almost ancient means are fascinating and ought to humble us. They dont invite costly circumstances but face the ones that we take for granted, like health and hunger. They cannot "Pull Up Anchor" and just sail away from discomfort. Your voyages could be a voyage of learning and appreciating.
Enjoy your u tubes
Y’all rock! Keep it up
Hey Nik! Thanks! 🤙
Corcovado and Manuel Antonio are essentially rainforest parks, where the land itself is the national park. Bahia Uvita is a marina national park, where the water and reef themselves are the park. It's one of the most protected marine areas in central america. They kicked you out bc your anchor could do a lot of damage and your hull could have growth that brings in invasive species. It's a felony in costa rica to even collect shells in that park. The "sand spit" you were walking on is called the Whale Tale and is a very popular destination in that region. If you climb the hills, you can view it from above and it looks just like the tale of a whale. This is a very friendly area of costa rica if you do your due diligence to respect their protections. I've been traveling to this region since 2005.
Yes, we are aware that Bahia Uvita is a National Marine Park. However, we could not find anything stating anchoring is prohibited. We checked many Costa Rican government websites as well as the Bahia Uvita National Marine Park site and no where does it say anchoring is prohibited. It is marked as an anchorage in every Costa Rican cruising guide. If anchoring is in fact not allowed, it needs to be clearly stated. It is also interesting that tour boats are allowed to anchor here and pick up guests from the nearby resorts. 🤷♀️
Wow what a great episode, can't believe you actually found the drone. The park ranger with his face mask on says everything, what a muppet. Well done on filming leaving the beech into that surf, one rolly anchorage you'll not miss 👏
Yeah we were pretty shocked we found it too! Not only found it but even got it to fly again! 🙌
Handyman Gary, great fix on that drone & wind sensor! Hope you sailed safely to a better anchorage, it shouldn´t be hard to improve😵💫😂Love your content, keep those vids coming and stay well!
Hey Misi Fuz! Gary is a rock star when it comes to Macgyver-ing things. So thankful for his mad skills! 🙌 Thanks for the love! 🍻
Well done with drone!!!
Thanks, Jacek! Can't believe I was able to get it flying again!
What an adventure from making waves to breaking waves ... and breaking rules you never knew about ....
Thanks Fred! 🤙⛵
OMG. I would not be swimming around in Costa Rica mangroves. That takes enormous kahonies.
I agree Lisa! Gary is a wildman! No way I would have got in!
No crocodile wow , a bunch of time , that was un peaceful. , at least at the end of the day. The prop is still propelling, the dingy aground is still floating , the drone went swimming, and still flying , and perhaps, the park ranger will find that crocodile when he least expects it . A Epic episode , with perseverance and patience . In one life we can’t sweat the small stuff . Yeah all those anchorage’s would make me sick .
Exactly, we can't sweat the small stuff! If we did, we would never survive out here! That anchorage was 🤮! Happy you enjoyed this episode!
@@SailingOneLife yes , perhaps in the future you can get zerobreeze to sponsor . If not , it would be nice , did you get your washer and dryer machine?
Roll on
You got it, Dean! Hope you are doing good!
In the river, don't end up like the African Quean with leaches! Nice video adventure! From Moonrunner Kauai, HI.
Thanks Bill! We didn't even think about leaches!
The more I watch this channel the more I like it I can't believe y'all don't have a half a million views subscribers
Ah thank you so much! This means alot to us! We really appreciate the good vibes!
The park ranger was probably on a power trip.
New subscriber here. Greetings from Serbian fan in Miami
Hey Denny! Oh wow awesome, thanks for coming by to check out our channel!
Wow, that didn't look that deep. Absolutely stunning scenery. Good find. That was crazy how shallow it got. So rolly, hope you get some sleep. Oh no, that's awful, especially when the rules contradict each other.
This video vibe has been my life since 2016.
Ah such a bummer!
@@SailingOneLife hopefully it has a light at the end of the tunnel too! ;)
@@jwulf 100%! Sending lots of good vibes your way!
@@SailingOneLife Always likewise! Thanks for letting me adventure through your content! ✌🏽
Thanks for coming along with us! 🤙
Glad you located the drone! Hope you can get it back to 100%! Sucks that there was no clear information on the anchorage though!! And really crap of them to just kick you out, and basically fear monger you with threats!! I hope you got to a nicer anchorage that was more relaxing!
Hey girl hey! Yeah it was a bit unfortunate but that's alright we made it to a more comfortable spot the next morning! The drone is flying again, although we still have issues with the gimbal it is usable! 🙌
The old v bottom we had while on plane we'd pull drain it would suck water out then replace plug
Ah yes! We do that sometimes as well!
Bummer about the drone, but I do commend you on your drone CPR skills, and bummer too about being booted out of your anchorage. Great episode nonetheless!
Thanks, Vern! Yeah super bummer but at least Gary was able to get it flying again!
Never stop filming In a situation like that.
You never know when it twill turn south.
You don’t have to have a camera in their face but at least record audio.
Nothing really happened here but you never know.
Ah didn't think about just picking up the audio....not a bad idea! Thanks!
Any type of electronic equipment in the water can be brought back to life, one remove battery pack, two blow dry it out, 3 pack in rice for a couple days. This is true with electric motors, circuit boards etc. Also say a prayer.
Luckily with a bit of disassembly and cleaning, Gary got it flying again!
Oh nooo!!!! Shoot that sucks that u guys got kicked out of the anchorage!!! Man im so bummed i missed u guys! I think i discovered ur channel just a few days too late..😢😢 anyway glad u were able to walk a little on the whales tail!! Let me know if u come back down this way!! Take care
I know we just missed you! Uvita is beautiful! Wish we could have spent more time there but maybe we will come back and visit by land one day!
Huevos bigger than coconuts, brain smaller than a pea. Ain't no way in hell I'd swim in croc-infested trees. Was smart to have a camera taking it all in, since it'd surely gone viral if you'd had your last swim.
😂 maybe not the smartest decision but he survived
The DJI drones are nice, but I really don't know anybody personally who owns one that hasn't lost the unit to malfunction if they use them with any frequency. I have started buying cheap $60-$80 4kor 1080p drones and losing one isn't a super big deal and the quality is close to the DJI 4k drones. Hey hopefully the river was fresh water at least so that means the drone will continue to be in better shape going forward.
Yeah DJI drones are nice but expensive! And it does seem like they just fall from the sky unknowingly. This is our second one that has done this. Just curious, what brand it is that you use? Maybe we will try to pick one up and give it a try!
@@SailingOneLife I bought it from Amazon and have put probably three hours on it. They don't have them anymore but I'm sure some people here have done some reviews of some good cheap ones. My model was an E59 4k drone.
Glad you fixed the drone it could of been worst.
We got so lucky! Can't believe it's still flying!
Keep a wet Cloth Towel,, Paper Towel,, etc, put on your table,, or counter,, so Plates won't Slide,, we did this on when I was was commercial fisherman...
Ah good advice! Never heard of this before, thank you!
You got some great footage and another great video. I bet that was quite upsetting being booted off the anchorage. I think the rather power mad ranger could have let you know the rules in a none threatening way as you obviously did not do it on purpose, it was probably just bad luck getting the wrong guy on a bad day. Heck didn't he know that you are world famous UA-camrs documenting nature and culture as you travel the worlds oceans lol.
Hahaha he meant business and was not into negotiating with us! It was a bit unsettling just because we then had to sail overnight to the next safe harbor which we weren't really prepared to do but that's okay!
OUCH!! GOTTA BE SICK OVER THAT DRONE!
😭 it's the chance we take! Can't believe we found it!
Wow Y'all getting kicked out of another place? LMAO. Glad you got the drone back.
😂🤪 We are just having too much fun apparently! Hi Gibb! Hope you are doing great! ♥️
@@SailingOneLife 👌Doing good.
You need to call ahead and ask questions Dopey
Who ya gonna call?! Ghostbusters!
Yeah if you could go ahead and give me the number to call that'd be great. 😂🤣
@@SailingOneLife its alot of work just to get a number yes but that's what it takes
That crash site looks like a great place to find a crocodile
Not an ideal place to be in the water that is for sure!
Hi guys. Yes I watch every ep.
Handle the surf in your dinghy is not hard. It seems cruisers, in all I have seen will negotiate the waves bow on & power in. Doing it this way requires precise timing.
The way we do it in New Zealand is we turn off & lift the motor behind the break, the bow to face the break & row in backwards.
I didn't see how you came in , in the video but I hope I'm not telling how to suck eggs.
Oh never back in using your motor. If you bottom out you will be screwed. If this is new to you please pass it on to other cruisers.
Interesting approach! We typically just time it behind a wave and stay on the back side of one to get in through the break. Will keep your strategy in mind should conditions ever require it. Thanks!
I read the title and thought you sailed to Alaska.
Maybe some day we will make it to Alaska!
👍
🤙
I saw Caymans at a Costa Beeach no crocs
Another great video, which episode was it that you showed your trolling rig?
Hey Bob! Thank you! The trolling setup is in Episode 70 - A Bittersweet Beginning
good to find you again. Actually, I thought they had gators there. somewhat small ones. Fresh water (not exactly clean) you might be able to get it working again ?
Ah interesting, we were told the water was brackish and they Crocs but it's possible they are gators. We got it flying again but the gimbal isn't working the best. Better than nothing though!
@@SailingOneLife It has been gators on some of the rivers. The river I remember had a lot of Kayak/Raft action. So, not brackish.
♥️♥️🥰🥰
Thanks, Frits! ♥️
After 6 years I've still not used my wind indicator, no need for it really!
That's awesome! Good for you!
Oh, just caught the end - wow. Glad it ended well, but rangers and govt officials can really rock yer world...
Yeah they can, he definitely meant business. It all worked out okay though and we made it to a better anchorage the next morning.
👍⛵🌊🎣💯
Thanks, Vincent! 🤙
I have a totally unfounded theory about lost Drones. You are a little far south for my theory, but do know we have had a number of solar flares hit the earth in the last few weeks. So think the flares interfere with the magnetometer have seen many take a dive in the northern skies. Have seen many a guy in uniform make up rules that are not found in any rule book, but make them feel important. Space weather or the static on the radio might let you know the flare activity.
Hmm interesting theory! You may be right! It does seem like there is some sort of interference happening. We know numerous people who have lost drones because of unknown reasons.
That overloaded barge was nuckin futz. I'm shocked they pulled it off. What do they do when the outboard dies in the middle of it?
Crazy to us, just the normal routine for them. Although I did see some of the guys taking video with their cell phones, so I think this one might have been at their limits 😂
@@SailingOneLife as a Physics degree holder I can say they were very lucky that loaded truck didn't shift and end up on the bottom!
There are places that make up their rules to fit their situation
Unfortunately, we have come across a couple of those places!
Braver than me, snakes, sharks or crocodiles, not me!
I (Brooke) agree, there is no way I'd get on that water! Gary is a legend! 🙌
Bummer...on both accounts...O'well...
Yeah such a bummer about the drone, thankful Gary is a tech savvy and at least was able to get it flying again!
Cruising for crocs in a small rubber raft in muddy waters, and no protection. Sounds like the plot of a tragic adventure movie. And what's this getting in the water? Isn't there drones that transfer the filmed into straight to you computer as it is shot? Maybe get a drone that floats. On all my favorite UA-cam sailing shows, the crew are forever losing their drones. WOW, must get costly. Seeing how no one was eaten by crocs and you found the drone, it turned out to be a good video. Stay groovy and stay safe.
Yes maybe not our smartest move searching for Crocs in a rubber dinghy but it was fun! Our drone is pretty simple so ours doesn't have that capability. I'm sure some of the high tech more expensive ones have something like that though! Thanks, MA - it's always good to hear from you! ♥️
@@SailingOneLife OK, stop doing dangerous things. I enjoy you both to much to see either of you hurt.
How could you have just walked passed those adorable dogs without saying Hi and petting them?
Trust me, I would love to love on them! But I had a bad experience with petting a random island dog once so tend to keep my hands to myself now.
@@SailingOneLife wise decision. I'm actually a ER Nurse and see plenty of Dog bites for just that reason. Good luck in your travels.
--My dog does not bite...
--That's not my dog.
Whilst he was in the water searching for the drone wouldn't it have been wiser to watch the water for danger (snakes? crocs? bull-shark?? etc.) rather than taking to the camera? Given Sod/Murphy's Law that was the most likely time for a croc to turn up
With the water as dark as it was, I don't think she would have been able to spot any of those things! I came in pretty hot on the dinghy to where it crashed, I figured that would have scared off any crocs for a while.
Incidentally if the drone is a DJI, I didn't watch the whole video, just skimmed it, and, if it wasn't pilot error and you maybe want to find out why it crashed, post the flight log on either the DJI forum or the Mavic Pilots forum.
I did check the flight log, it seemed to have lost GPS after takeoff due to the thick tall forest cover. For some reason when it automatically switched into ATTI mode it went crazy! I'll be extra cautious about only flying it with solid GPS connection from now on.
Do you guys use a nylon snubber on your anchor chain? I don't think I saw one in that rolly anchorage clip. If not, that's really hard on the windlass. Herbie from rigging doctor channel just did a quick video this week on the best knot to tie the nylon rope snubber to the chain.
We use a nylon three-strand bridle with a chain hook that gets connected to two bow cleats. It has fire hose over it for chafe protection. Has worked well for us in all kinds of conditions. 👍
@@SailingOneLife good stuff. I must have missed that. Watching on my phone screen.
Please no more swimming with crocs. I understand why... but drone footage vs life... you've got 'one life' and can buy (albeit $$$) another drone. I knew you got it and were safe because of the footage but I was on pins/needles watching that part :) The anchoring/national park thing is really confusing. Costa Rica is moving down the bucket list of places to visit. Seems like a disappointing hassle not to be able to trust the charts and then get scolded on the beach :( Great video - I love the sailing AND the adventures on shore.
Hey Donald! Ugh yes Gary swimming in that water was 😬 but he wanted to do it. I agree that the drone is not worth it but he was determined. We need to catch up soon, we want to hear more about how your classes went! ♥️
Could you attach some kind of flotation to the drone?
We think it would be tricky to find a flotation device that is small and light enough to fit on the drone without it inhibiting it's ability to fly. Good idea though!
Did that game Warden get eaten by the crocodile yet. ??
😬
They were looking for a pay off .the hell with them
Yeah Costa Rica is a complicated place.
🙌🏼❤️🙏🏻🤢
Total 🤮 haha....cheers Jorge!
And you are in a rubber boat....
Yup! 🤪 😂
WD40 would be a better choice then rubbing alcohol for displacing water on PCB.
Interesting, would have thought that WD40 would leave behind a residue. Good to know for next time.
@@SailingOneLife have to wipe away excess or even fallow up with the rubbing alcohol.
The thing with Bahia Ballena is it's a MARINE national park. So no hooks are allowed in order to protect the reefs and ecosystems under water. Some park rangers are notoriously sloppy and tone deaf when it comes to explaining things to people, some are outright a$$holes. You probably met two of them. Bahia Ballena is NOT an anchorage, despite what Navionics says. Somebody that didn't know better marked it as such. It is however, a great place to visit and watch whales.
Hey Luis! Good information, thank you! Interestingly enough it's not only in Navionics but also in the guidebook for Costa Rica. I'm going to write a review in Navionics to let others now there is no anchoring allowed there.
re: the rules problem, maybe a few dollars might have fixed that
Oh it was pretty obvious from the tone (we didn't film the whole interaction) that offering some colones would have not been a wise move
@@SailingOneLife I was not really serious. I know in some countries it would be an automatic response, expected really
Why looking for crocodiles? They look just like alligators.
The sad part of seeing that truck full of logs are the cutting down of old forest trees in a rain forest country. Talk about climate change H2O N2O emissions absorption.
Yes, seeing the clearing of the rainforest is quite sad.
Everyone (except Delos) complains about Costa Rica. You have to remember that it is basically a dictator run country. Sailors should look at the CIA's fact sheet on all the countries they visit. Don't rely on just your sailing guidebooks.
The US government basically recommends to travel no where. We would have skipped many wonderful places if we stuck to that. And the Delos crew felt the same way in Costa Rica. To hear that it's a rough place to visit by sailboat from someone who has circumnavigated, we took that as pretty solid validation.
Looks like someone needs to invest in a depth meter!
Why don’t you say the name of the country? You think we know just because you say a town’s name?
We say the name of the country during the first 15 seconds of the video.
Why would I give you money? Get a job.
We always love comments like these. Peace out dude. ✌️
