- Welcome to our floating home!
In this video, we give you a tour of our 40 foot monohull sailboat, One Life. She is a 1983 Nautical Development Offshore 40 built in Tampa, Florida. She is a rare model as only 14 of these boats were built. Although not a well known brand, she is solid old girl and takes good care of us. We welcome you aboard to check her out! If you have any questions or we did not cover something you would like to know more about, drop your question in the comments section and we will answer!

Gotta admit, that is the nicest layout of a 40' I've ever seen, by far.
Thank you, we think so too! We've never seen a layout quite like ours!
I'm thinking the same thing. If this boat sails half as well as it looks & lives, I can't believe this company went out of business. What a boat!
@@mattman237 thanks Matt! We think she sails wonderfully but she's the only boat we've ever sailed! 🤣
We can't believe the company went under. We think boat builders were a bit oversaturated in the 80's? Either way we are happy we found her!
@@SailingOneLife Yup, an oversaturated market along with a recession or two probably did this beautiful boat in :(. They still should have sold a thousand of these though, lol.
Thank you for living my dream and sharing your lives with us!
And thank you, for cheering us on out here!
Lol about the hidden wine storage!
The besttttttt! If only it were bigger! Haha.
One Life is a gem. 👍🇺🇸😎⛵️
Thanks you! We think so too! She takes great care of us! ⛵⛵
Your sailboat looks like a nice world cruiser. I like the design of it inside and outside.
Thank you! We really love our layout!
Very sweet boat
Thanks, Mike! We are pretty fond of her!
Such a warm and comfortable boat! Love the tour!❤
Thanks, Jessica! We love her!
This is a cool boat!
Thank you! We think she is pretty rad too! We haven't been on many monohulls but we her layout seems to fit us well.
Great 'roomtour' video/thanks 😉
My dream life, look like this 😏
Your girl/home is amazing-congrat's 🥰👍🏻⛵👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you! We are pretty proud of our gal, One Life! We love her!

Just came across your channel, very nice boat, I love the layout! Looking forward to checking out more of your videos 😊
Hey Shelley! Thank you! We love our girl, she is the perfect layout for us and we've not seen one quite like her yet! We hope you enjoy some of our other videos!
One Nice Boat !
Thanks WW! ⛵🍻
Fab boat guys, great tour!
Thank you! We really love our floating home!
That's a great boat and you two have done a phenomenal job in a pretty short time. Absolutely making One Life count! 🎉
Ah thank you so much! We love our gal! She takes good care of us.
Great video!
Small... Your boat looks huge!
Thanks, Eric! She is plenty big for the two of us!
We had a Cheoy Lee Offshore 42 ketch and your boat has so much more room inside. I love center cockpits, having that rear cabin is so nice. What a great layout for a cruising boat, absolutely love it. Thanks for the tour.
Thank you, Johnboy! She suits us well. We are big fans of the center cockpit. We think we picked out a good boat, she takes good care of us!
Thank you for the tour, love your home! I saw you with Beau and Brandy so came to your channel, watched your tour and hooked! You have a new Subscriber! Stay safe!
Hey Stephen! Thanks for joining us! We have been having so much fun with the B's! Glad you enjoyed the tour of our home. 🍻
thats a very nice boat
Thank you so much, Jenesse! We are a big fan of her!
very cool
Thanks Stan!
Nice boat
Thanks, Gamal!!
For the age of this boat it is SOO DAM CLEAN . what a beauty you have there.
Thanks, Procharged! We think she is pretty grand! We lucked out finding her. Lucky for us, her previous owners kept her in top shape and cruised her around the previous 12 years!
@@SailingOneLife Love that boat keep up the videos cause we are here in freezing temps with 20 inches of snow relying on you guys keeping us warm , lol
Hahaha oooo that's chilly! Where are you? 🥶
@@SailingOneLife Northern Illinois ! brr
@@procharged67 one of our favorite places to escape to is Devil's Kitchen in southern Illinois, close to Carbondale.
Chart plotters are much more interesting than TV anyway. You might need more beer storage!
Absolutely! We prefer to gaze at the stunning views around us instead of a TV screen. The beer supply has dwindled actually and the storage compartments are pretty empty, might be time for a restocking!
Nice tour, thanks guys, and, indeed a great layout design. The center cockpit?, the aft bedroom and full shower really makes it though. First time seeing this manufacturer...
God Bless Brook & Gary👱🏻♀🧔🏻& prayers for smooth sailing, always in all ways🙏🏻⛵🐬
Thank you, Richard! Nautical Development was a very small builder. We are slowly finding the 14 boats like ours. We started an owners group in Facebook and now I believe we have found 8 of the 14 NDO 40's! Pretty cool.
We think she is pretty great, she takes the best care of us!🧜♀️🧔
It's pretty interesting you guys have located 8 of 14👍🏻... Seems you have gona all in with the sailing bug, aye? Good for you's...
Noticed a 60-footer for sale on one of the boat sites...
God Bless 🙏🏻⛵🐬🐬
Very beamy, I like it
Thanks! She's a fat bottom girl!
So cool.....I'd wondered alot and this answers so much! (Guess I will reconsider sending an insta pot teeeeeeeeheeeeeeee). I've realized thru you that clothes and shoes matter naught!!!!!!! Love 💓😘
Thanks Molly! We thought people might like to see our little home! Glad you liked this one. The instant pot ROCKS! I can cook a lobster tail in that thing in no time.
Wow!! Just wow. That boat has a seriously well planned layout. I’m late to your channel. But about to embark on a similar journey. Just watched you video on costs. That had to be the best I’ve seen or read in four decades. Ty!! In this video you suggest your open to sailing visitors! Wife and I are novices. I’ve power bored for decades. Sailed just a bit. Let me know if we can charter and come stay with you to learn!!
Thanks, James!! We love our layout! She is pretty roomy for a 40ft boat!
One Life, MTV Cribs edition! Sweet tiny home
Hahaha where the magic happens!
Thanks Josh! 🍻
What a lovely boat you have. Thank you both for the great tour. Love the layout and the beautiful woodwork inside. Also like the doors how they have rounded corners. Just fantastic.
I'm hoping I can find a used bluewater sailboat like yours.
Been dreaming of this for a long time now. I think a 40'+ boat is a perfect size for living aboard and traveling long distances.
Take care and God bless!
Hey Phil! Thank you! We just responded to your email btw!
@@SailingOneLife you're welcome and thank you for responding. I will check it out.
Take care and God bless!
That boat is amazing. I really love the back deck area. Your boat is definitely not small; I would choose it over larger monohulls and even catamarans.
Hi Sailing Eden! Ah glad you like our boat! We are pretty partial to it! 😍 Our holding tank capacity is 20 gallons and our battery bank is currently 3 8D AGM's. We hope to switch to lithium at some point.
Beautiful boat. Really enjoying your channel. Your subs should really take off soon with the quality episodes your putting out.
Hey Dane! Thank you so much. We love to hear when people are enjoying our videos!
That's great that you have a separate shower. That's one thing I don't want to compromise on when we buy a boat. I don't want the entire bathroom to get wet when someone takes a shower! Your bedroom is amazing - we are looking at a Hunter 420 center cockpit because it, too, has the large cabin in the back with the "high" ceiling. I don't like the ones where you have to crawl into a "cave" to get in bed! lol Looks like you have plenty of storage. I bet you don't open the shoe storage compartment too often, huh? :)
We really love our layout. Our bedroom pretty much sold me (Brooke) on our boat. I love how much space we have back there. It really feels like a bedroom instead of like you mentioned a cave. We rarely open our shoe storage, we are mostly barefoot or have flip flops on! I just looked up the layout of a Hunter 420, it looks spacious with a nice aft cabin as well! Keep us posted on it! Also, we are happy to jump on a zoom call with you guys if you ever have any questions!
@@SailingOneLife As we get closer to buying a boat, we will probably want to talk with you guys and ask some more questions. Thanks for being willing to do that! Ted is still downsizing and re-organizing. We're hoping to have a huge yard sale very soon and clear out a lot of stuff! :)
That's awesome! So happy you guys are getting stuff done and getting ready for your big purchase!
Oh Yeah One Life is nice 💙💙😎🇬🇩🇬🇩🇬🇩🇬🇩
Thanks Rebel! Can't wait to have you back onboard with the boys again!
We have the same boat as yours, we love her also , we sail the Sea of Cortez , Baja and down the Mexican mainland also .S/V Music IV , very nice to see a Nautical in great shape , we take very good care of her and she takes very good care of us !
Hey Sharen! It's so nice to hear from another Nautical Development owner! We started an owners group on Facebook if you'd like to connect.... facebook.com/groups/980357282357098/?ref=share

Hey Sharen! We are headed to Sea of Cortez this season! We were wondering if you will be in that area! We would love to meet up with another Nautical owner!
Holy smokes!!!! Is that 4-month beard growth!? Just looked at your thumbnails, and WOAH! lol
Haha yeah... I shaved before we left Florida last January and then in Grenada in July. It might be about time again. Starting to wonder if all the saltwater is actually making it grow faster! 😂
Love the tour!! Like the tour in person before you left!!! Just wanted to let you know we have a New President at Ron Jons. Michelle Goodwin. Debbie is retiring
Thanks Mike! Always better in person over a cold beverage! But figured it would be fun to share with everyone this way too!
Yes, I heard! Congrats to Michele and Debbie! Miss you all!
Oh, I would love to meet you too guys if you're not too far away. I hope I'm not too late for the show!
Hey Lemonade Citrus! Where do you live? The boat show is in Annapolis, MD! Would love to meet ya!
@@SailingOneLife thanks, but I'm halfway around the world.😊👍👍
One life is just beautiful. Wow! We love the wood work!! A lot of similarities between one life and rosebud. Our galleys look similar. As well as the engine room location. Our main cabin is on starboard side. We have a water maker as well. May have to ask you some questions about that. As far as service intervals. Our helms looks very similar as well. I love the set tee. Wow! Very cozy vessel you guys! I noticed a switch on rosebuds panel for a ssb radio. But never found it. Hmmm maybe it’s tucked away somewhere there. But there is an antenna tuner for it in the helm.
We will do a similar video of rosebud when we move onto her. Carry on. One life is just amazingly beautiful!
Thank you! We are quite fond of our little floating home. She is cozy but she is fierce! 💪 We are happy to answer and questions, just shoot us an email at sailingonelife@gmail.com it's much easier for us to respond properly via email. Ciao for now!
@@SailingOneLife awesome! Thank you both! We have a list! Hahaha. So brace yourselves!
We will be on standby!
Lovely layout! Perfect for a couple with occasional visitors.
However, only one head. Hmmm... That could be problematic at some point.
And for me, I would increase the solar capacity and battery capacity. Good that you can work with what you have though.
Ok... more binging on your vids!
We absolutely love the layout! One head has been perfect for us so far. Instead of two small heads, we get one large one with a big separate shower. More solar would always be nice! Maybe we will find a way to add more panels on the stern.
Well, I made it through all your videos last night and this morning... I'm excited for you guys!
What ever happened to the part you sent to your friend in the states to have machined?
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed our videos so much!
We got that part back (autopilot tiller arm) and it's been solid! Unfortunately the wear and tear in that part must not have been the only cause of our autopilot failures. No worries though, we've become experts at hand-steering! 🤣
Really enjoyed the tour. Love the boat layout. Aft cabin is just great and I am envious of your shower. Is your watermaker a 12V system and what make/model is it? Keep up the great videos.
Hi Gary! Thank you!! I (Brooke) fell in love with the aft cabin and spacious shower. Our watermaker is a Katadyn 160E. Yep, 12 volt system. It's a great system for us and keeps up with our needs. Thanks for watching us learn and grow!
190123 Thanks for the Cook's tour.
Thanks for coming along on the tour!
That's a really nice monohull layout.. Love the tool trays in the nav desk, the spacious mechanical room, and the generous shower.. Why did they only make 14? Seems like a very practical boat.
In the mid 80s the boat building industry crashed, and took out a lot of manufacturers. Rising oil prices and the savings and loan crisis both played a role. The Nautical Development yard was one of the many casualties. We really love the layout and think it's perfect for a couple to sail full time on.
@@SailingOneLife if I was going to do a monohull that would be just right. I'm planning to build a trimaran. I'm actually currently starting a kit boat company focused predominantly on various trimaran designs.
@@allmomomosthomebus3895 oh wow very cool!! We have friends who have a trimaran. Check them out on Instagram, @outerpassage
Nice job on the fiberglassing. But next time you should overlap your plys about 1 inch bigger each time. and on your last ply of glass use a lighter cosmetic ply and if you can find some peel ply in your area use that also you will get a much smoother finish and less to no air bubbles.. Composite Tech for a major defence contractor Retired. Good Job !!!
We weren't too concerned about cosmetics because it all gets covered by interior panels and trim. And the inside of the locker got epoxy painted.
As to overlapping layers, don't think it really matters with epoxy. If you've got data that shows otherwise, please share it so I can nerd out! www.sailmagazine.com/diy/big-piece-or-small
You've got a lot of counter space compared to other galleys I've seen! Ted wants to get a Soda Stream for our boat. It makes carbonated water out of plain water, right? And then you just add flavor drops? We use our Instant Pot several times a week at home, but we're thinking of getting a smaller one for our boat. Or maybe a rice cooker that can also cook veggies, etc. We're looking into all of that.....lots of decisions to be made! Ted is also insisting that we need to put a washer into whatever boat we end up buying. I don't know why, because I'm the one who does the laundry. hehe
Hey Melissa! We love our Soda Stream and our Instant Pot & use them regularly. For our Instant Pot we have the smallest size, I believe it is 4 quarts. It works great for just the two of us and doesn't use much power. As for the Soda Stream, the only drawback we have found is that sometimes it is tough to find places to refill the CO2 cartridges. We luckily have four cartridges onboard and they tend to last us about a month each. When we find a place to refill them, we make sure to refill them all as it may be a couple months before we are able to find a place to fill them again. Yep, it just turns plain water into bubbly water and you can add flavor syrups or squeeze some fresh fruit in to flavor it! I love how eager Ted is to put a washer onboard! Very curious what you two decide about that. There is a portable washer that we've seen a few boats have onboard. They seem to work great and are pretty inexpensive. For us it is a space issue. If we ever revamp our forward cabin, I'd love to rip out the sink in there and install a washer.....maybe one day! 😂 Honestly bucket laundry and laundromats aren't so bad!
@@SailingOneLife Yeah, I keep telling him I can do laundry in a bucket. :)
Haha! You go girl! 🙌🧜♀️
I've heard getting propane in some countries can be a pain in the ass due to valve differences. have you run into this issue and if so how do you get around that? Have you thought about going full electric and ditching the gas? You all be safe, Thanks for another awesome video. :)
So far we haven't had any problem getting our tanks refilled. With our 5 total tanks (6 lbs each) we usually last about 4-5 months so we don't need to think about it too often. We were able to get fills in USVI, Grenada, and Antigua without much trouble. Perhaps it will become more of a challenge if our journey takes us further from the US.
While we would love to ditch the gas and be independent of a fossil fuel, it probably would be rather expensive for us. We would likely need to switch to lithium batteries ($$$) and replace our stove/oven and grill. For boats with electric propulsion, it makes a lot of sense as the electrical system to support cooking is already in place. For us though, sticking with propane makes the most sense.
Glad you liked the tour video, thanks for watching!
Who knew? So much work to do.

Hey, love your videos. By the way, in the Bahamas, Cay is pronounced “Key”. I guess you might know by now. Keep up the adventures
Hey there! Glad you are enjoying our channel! Ha, yep, we know Cay is Key now. A bit confusing as a newbie.
What a great layout! What is the head height in there?
It's around 6'3" in most of the boat. I am 6'0" and really only need to duck in the doorways. We love the layout too!
👍
Thanks! ⛵🙌
What dive compressor is that? Thanks for the tour! I'm refitting now so got some good ideas!
I think you could literally do a video on storage! There are some very good design features (locking pins, tool drawers that can only open with the door? )
Really cool boat!
It's a Coltri MCH6 with the Honda gasoline engine. We can fill a tank in about 20 minutes. It's absolutely my favorite toy on the boat!
There is so much storage we didn't even mention! She has been perfect for us so far... we have all the space and amenities we could ever want in a 40 ft package!
@@SailingOneLife well I really hope you do another video! The engine compartment bolts looked like they just slide out?
Yes the engine room access doors are secured with a couple Perko ship bolts .... www.amazon.com/Perko-1053DP0CHR-Ship-Bolt/dp/B0000VW24Q
They work great, as long as you remember to put the bolts back in 🤣
Hey just watching your videos and was wondering if you ever fixed your bobstay that fell off on the way to Curacao? I'd hate to see your mast go in the water.
Hey Mitch! Thanks for the comment but I think you may have us mixed up with another channel possibly? Luckily we did not have any issues with our bobstay. We would hate for our mast to go in the water as well. 😳 That sounds terrifying!
I follow several sailing channels and it seems your vessel/home is one of the nicer vessels I’ve seen. Is it costly to purchace?
Hey Bill! Thank you, we think One Life's layout suits us pretty well. We actually did a cost video which talks about the cost of our boat and how much money we put into One Life before we left the dock. Check it out when you have time!
@@SailingOneLifeDefinetly need, to see that video 👌🏻👍🏻

Thank you! ♥️
What capacity is the holding tank and battery bank?
How tall are you sir?
How does she sails? Upwind? Light wind? Heavy weather? Stiff? Does she track well? How about under power in the marina?
Hey Oliver! Gary is 6'0.
@@SailingOneLife thanks, great boat by the way. You two are set up pretty well
We don't have much to compare to since this is the only sailboat we have owned. But sailing performance was pretty similar to our friends Pearson 424 cutter when buddy boating around the Bahamas. She's definitely a stiff boat and likes when the winds up around 15 to 20 kts. Upwind performance is just okay, but I think that's mostly due to our 18 year old and baggy genoa. We haven't done much downwind sailing yet, so not much to say about that, but she's real comfortable and tracks well even when surfing down waves. Manuevering under power is easy so long as we don't try to back up to starboard. Prop walk sends the stern to port in reverse but it's manageable.
@@SailingOneLife awesome info thanks
Gary looks like one of the Muppets. Don’t know which one, but one for sure.
Fozzie Bear?! 😅
You host visitors? My and my lady would be interested.
Hey AJ! We don't do charters but we occasionally have friends & family and occasional crew onboard. Hope you have a great holiday!
How much did you spend to purchase the boat?
Hey Steve, we are working on our budget video now which will include how much we spent on the boat.
@@SailingOneLife Thanks, I'll look forward to it. I missed a 84' Nautical Development 40 last week that was for sale in Punta Gorda. After I saw your video, I was ready to fly down to look at it. What about in defense of pirates?
Lol no but seriously, what are the logistics of carrying firearms on the boat?
Hey Kirby! It is pretty complicated to have a firearm onboard when checking into a new country. In most countries they do not allow it. In some they will hold the gun until you exit. If you don't report your firearms and you are boarded in some places they can confiscate your boat, jail time etc. For us, we pick the places that we feel comfortable at and sail far offshore when passing the ones we don't (Venezuela).
@@SailingOneLife good to know. Thank-you for the informative reply.
I'm super jealous of the on board air compressor
Ah it's the best! We love it and use it as much as we can. Hands down our favorite 'toy' on the boat!
The barf bucket, must stay out on the back of boat and they must focus on the horizon , to stop the barfing . New crew get sick and shit from mouth stanky feet = stanky mouth .
There's no barf bucket ..... We barf overboard on One Life! 😂🤮 Here's to hoping for zero 🤮 and more 🥳
@@SailingOneLife yes , but if they stay somewhere in the back area and focus on the horizon . perhaps they will feel better . .
If crew is in cab laying down . They will lose the ( horizontal view , ) perhaps hang some 3 ft rope inside there cabin to see the gravity move the rope .thus telling the brain to balance .
