What makes David’s performance exceptional is the fact that he was singing live with a bad head and chest cold and rather than cancel he went on to perform!
I met David Draiman when I was 16 and he YANKED me by the collar out of line in an autograph signing of hundreds, brought me forward, had the band sign my 10,000 Fists album, gave me the tightest hug I've ever felt and square in the eyes told me "Thank you for being a fan, you're destined for big things in life." That will stand with me forever.
I’ve seen this said from several people of my general age group (71) but I recall when the original S&G song came out and I loved it. However, hearing it sung by David Draiman and Disturbed made me appreciate the song in a way that I had never done before - almost like I was hearing, understanding and reacting to the words for the first time. Well done, Disturbed. This old hippie is a new fan.
What I love about this cover is that they took a classic song that stands tall on it's own in both lyrics and music, performed by icons of the music world. They had the courage to see what it could be and they made it BETTER. This is how this song was intended to sound, the lyrics, the build and the emotion all come together to COMPLETE the journey this song started on with Simon & Garfunkel writing and performing it. This song was written to be performed like this emotionally and powerfully. It took a while but the journey is complete. Well done by both Simon & Garfunkel and Disturbed. This was one of my favorite songs and is even more so now...
And AutoTune in real time (yes, it is done sometimes). Not being critical, it's just a fact. Draiman wasn't happy bout it and objected, but the Conan producers won that battle.
It's not the fact that one version is better than the other (studio vs live on Conan). It's the fact that the live sounds almost exactly like the studio version. In music live versions tend to always be worse than the studio version because the studio version will be the best take out of many tries of each different part of the song (vocals, drums, violins, ect) blended together to make it sound the best they can. Not to mention pitch tuning and other editing tricks to make it sound the best they can. The fact that made Disturbs version of this song so amazing is that he is able to make the live and studio version sound so much alike proving that it wasn't studio magic that made the song so great, it was David's own amazing voice.
David Draiman...a voice to die for. A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion and back on a dime. He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful tonal properties to it! An awesome talent and obvious training to deliver what he does!! Can sing like an angel or the devil ! Loved your reaction and your take on David's performance. Good job PG! Try "Deceiver", Violence Fetish", "Indestructible" and "The Night" by Disturbed too.
I'm tipping towards the studio version just because it gave me goose bumps. The close ups of his face when he was singing really got to me. Considering he was ill, this one was really good. Did you know they covered Genesis' Land of Confusion? I thought they did a great job with that one too. I know it's an oldie but then, so am I. He he. If you get around to it, maybe you could do a side by side comparison, first Genesis, then Disturbed.
Hunting for the Genesis video for Land of Confusion was how I discovered Disturbed and fell instantly under their spell. I've played their two versions of this song well over a thousand times since then.
Wow I always thought live versions were terrible but David has put it to a whole new level for the rest to catch up to. Great video and keep up the good work my guy.
@@alek2913 Same here, but in regards to Rammstein. Their live performances supposedly take a week just to set up the stage, and aren't so much a concert as they are an experience. Hell, just watch the videos of their live performances, they're masterclasses in showmanship (and pyrotechnics!) Of course, that's not the same as a live "small studio" performance, David Draiman and Disturbed NAILED that!
It's a trick of the trade with the sitting. You use a stool that's waist high so that the feet remain flat on the floor. This allows the spine to stay straight and the chest to barrel and fully expand. End result is just the same is standing...full power and breath with the same proper posture (as long as you don't toss in a guitar to hunker over and thereby reduce your pulmonary reserve.)
This live version is much better than the studio version. He sang the song sitting down because he wasn't feeling well. He didn't think he could stand to do this performance. One of the best covers of any song EVER!!
Relatively new watcher here, just subbed since I realized I hadn't yet. As for Disturbed, as JohnnyNr5 said, Inside the Fire is a great piece. Another classic is Indestructible which comes off the same album. A couple other favorites of mine are Ten Thousand Fists, The Night, The Game, Land of Confusion.. There's a few really good ones but it's rare to be disappointed by Disturbed.
I have had the pleasure of seeing this live. David Draymens voice is incredible, I highly recommend seeing them if you get the chance. Great reaction, thanks for doing this again 🤘🤘😁
Love this version also. I find that most live is better than studio recorded as the voice is more raw and bold and get the sense of the mood of the song by their expressions.
Disturbed’s new cover of Stings “If Ever I Should Lose My Faith In You”.......updated videography for today’s political climate and an a amazing interpretation !!!
My main suggestion is Inside The Fire, but i don't know if you want to react to that one. Background is that David was a drug addict in his teens, and his then girlfriend (the one who introduced him to drugs) killed herself (OD) when he was..16 i think. Inside The Fire is about how he felt the devil was telling him to follow in her foodsteps. Fan-fucking-tastic song imho, but i know you have a background with that topic too, so i won't hold it against you if you skip it. Link: ua-cam.com/video/rxujAPhxlo0/v-deo.html Other than that i guess the go to, obvious one, is Down With The Sickness. That's a song about how we treat people who don't follow the mainstream way thriough life: ua-cam.com/video/09LTT0xwdfw/v-deo.html
Simon and Garfunkels version was a warning of what was to come if we didn’t change. Disturbed’s version is rage that we didn’t heed that warning. Now we are glued into phones and technology instead of each other. This is my favorite version!
I'm curious if you listened to any of their regular style music in between the 2 versions? Yes singing whilst sitting is VERY difficult and only the best singers can do it as effortlessly as David seems to be doing.
I feel the same about Hallelujah that PTX did. On their Pentatonix Christmas Special they did it live and it, to me, is better than the official video. Even if you don't react to it you should give it a listen.
To all those saying he had a cold or the flu - there is an interview that I saw where he was asked about this performance. ua-cam.com/video/osBbQLhOp8A/v-deo.html watch at 1:14:22 where he explains. He didn't have any of those things - but - he did have a vocal chord injury and had his ENT on stand by and then had it fixed after this. Also - for those that have not ever seen him in concert - he likes to sit during "intimate" songs! He is a trained singer and is able to alter his breathing to work just as well sitting as standing. He is one of the most remarkable singers I have ever had the pleasure to see in person! Simply amazing!
I just searched and noticed you haven't done Zombie yet! Please please do this. However you MUST do the Cranberries version first then the cover from last year!!
The performance on Conan was good, but I have to say that Disturbed's video affected me far more deeply and emotionally. The video tells a very profound story about people ("..writing songs that voices never share...no one dares.."). On one shore there is an innumerable amount of people holding sheet music (the "songs" that people wrote). On the opposite shore are people who have taken up musical instruments (drums, guitar, etc). The people (...writing songs that voices never share...) have something to say. The people across the divide carrying instruments would and could make those songs (ie "voices") heard if a bridge was there to allow them to come togeether. That's my take on this song, but before Disturbed released the video, Simon & Garfunkel's "Sound Of Silence" was just a beautiful song. With Disturbed's release of the video, it all made so much sense. The first time I watched the video, it surprised by how much deep, yearning (for something) it brought out in me. The video simultaneously (if that is possible) seems like a cynical yet hopeful message. I still get goosebumps when I watch it. Again, the performance on Conan was absolutely beautiful and powerful, but it doesn't hold a candle to the video. There are powerful metaphors that are not apparent in the lyrics, alone.
You should do more Disturbed again. Their "A Reason to Fight" is more of a ballad, about overcoming addiction. The video was directed by the same guy who directed the official video of their The Sound of Silence.
I love this live version, I just get goose bumps every time I listen to this, just phenomenal. 🎶👍💞 Love your reaction videos. If you haven't already you have to react to Chris Stapleton, Tennessee whiskey live at Austin city limits, you will be blown away it blew up so big, the live version is insane. You won't be disappointed I promise
I think the video version is really the best. I have heard both versions and to me the video is better and intense, it also has no auto tune . David hates auto tune and will not use it. The Conan produces used it in spite of David telling not to use it. He was angry at them for using it .
You should try listening to Lukas Graham. Any song will do, but the ones that are rehearsals are awsome... The songs: "Don't you worry 'bout me" and "You're not there" are fantastic...

He was sitting down Because he was sick with the flu the last few days before the Show, And yet he sang this Flawlessly.

He was sick during this performance. His voice is amazing 👏
Paul Simon saw this performance the night it aired and loved it! He called David Draiman afterward to congratulate him.
Better Live? YES YES a thousand times YES!!! I never get tired of this performance. David is amazing on and off stage. 🖤🖤🖤
