"Take her to the moon for me. Okay?" That scene gets me every time. The VA, Richard Kind, actually cried while delivering that line. The voice break is real.

Lauren Kind who is the Bing Bong voice actor's wife, loves to voice Riley Anderson's teacher so much.
Anger making terrible decisions is one of the most accurate things in this film.
It's the HALT principle. You make the worst choices when you're hungry, angry, lonely or tired.
It really is because when you're angry 😡 you can't think rationally.
Cinema Therapy said it best, there is a type of love that is only experienced through sadness & a type of joy that is only experienced through grief. Rewatching this movie now hits different. A really close friend of mine passed a few years ago of cancer & every happy memory I have of her is coloured in blue. But that's what makes them beautiful.
They waited 10 years so that people who watched this as young kids could grow up with Riley as a teenager. Part 2 is going to be an emotional powerhouse I bet.
Looking into the parents’ brains and the order of operation amongst their own emotions is definitely one of my favorite parts of the movie. Consider this, it’s been mentioned that the mother leads with sadness yes, but sadness has the strong skill set of being empathetic; whereas the dad leads with anger who also can be associated with being protective not only in general but also over his family. It’s interesting to me that happiness is unfortunately the furthest from the center of the console. Almost like it’s been put on the back burner of his priorities.
I didn't even think of or realize that last bit about his happiness. That's depressing. Thank you for pointing it out.
The great thing about Pixar is that they know how to make people not to be afraid to express their emotions. Can't wait to see Inside Out 2 soon. Good reaction Clariss and love the eye shadow; you look so lovely.
This movie is INCREDIBLE with color theory.
Riley: striped shirt as they're moving with all colors on them to show theyre in harmony, or so it seems. yellow jacket on the first day of school because she's still young enough to be excited. Striped shirt sans blue and yellow at the dinner table because all of her emotions are fighting for control with joy and sadness gone. Black jacket because she's emotionally shutting down.
Emotions: joy has blue hair, backing up the theory joy and sadness go hand in hand. Disgust has a purple ascot, suggesting disgust is mainly motivated by what scares us. Anger is wearing a red tie showing how when were angry, we can't see, hear, or feel anything else. Think, "seeing red". And finally Sadness is wearing a white turtleneck as a combination of all the emotions, like how all light is combined to make white light.
It's so interesting that all the issues started with Riley rejecting not only feeling sad, but also rejecting the new sad core memory. It was so contrary to how she saw herself that she didnt want to accept that she could even have a sad core memory, but it was her rejection of being sad about moving that brought on that particular sad core memory being brought up at school. When we're super rigid about who we THINK we are, we deny so much about ourselves and it slows our personal growth.

I love how the family's from Minnesota, yet Sadness is the only character who actually has a Minnesotan accent. That's like with Lumière, Rafiki and Kaisa the librarian (and arguably Peter and Lois), being the only characters whose accents match the setting.
Kids process moving differently. She probably knew but wasn't focused on it till the house was sold and it became real.
Isn’t it crazy that they used Boo’s scream from Monsters Inc for toddler Riley?
They did. Even Kingdom Hearts 3 reuses Boo’s voice from the first film.

I have an appreciation for Inside Out because the way feelings work in this animation is marvelous. Although each feeling has a name and a function, the result is not always as it should be, like Disgust acting as sarcasm. Although Sadness leads the mother's feelings and Anger leads the father's feelings, this does not necessarily mean that they are those feelings, after all, we can see in the end that feelings merge into memories.
I really like Sadness because she didn't know she was important, just as we human beings think it isn't important, since we try to eliminate sadness from our lives, but it is precisely by dealing with sadness that we can learn to be happy.
Inside Out is one of the many animations that are really for children, because they go through it, we also went through it as children and, in a way, we still go through it as adults.
The sequel will bring new characters, new emotions and new experiences and I'm looking forward to seeing how they will do. I really like this animation, so I have expectations about this sequel.

I still maintain the wish to have gotten the Riley missing and return scene from the parents emotions pov. The panic that she's missing, relief she's back, distress to see her breaking down, their own memories coming up tinted blue, the family island they surely have expanding
I've said it since the day I saw this in the theater: Pixar did us DIRTY with Bing Bong. More traumatic than the 5 minute montage from Up.
One of the cool things of the movie of course is the idea that even the "negative" emotions have some positives to them. It's especially cool when you think about the parents!
Like the mom has sadness taking the lead, but this also means that she's more of the empathetic type which we see when she tries to figure out what's wrong with Riley. Meanwhile the dad has anger taking the lead, but this also means that he's more assertive and maybe more passionate, which we get a small impression of it through the fact they moved to San Francisco because of his new job.
When it first came out,I had no interest into the movie,because it was more aimed at younger kids. Later on when it was released on DVD,my mom made me watch it with her. Oh boy.. I cried so hard when Bing Bong died. My mouth was shaking/trembling,my tummy was pumping,everything... Ever since,I still cry whenever this scene pops up. It felt as if I've lost a family member. My grandma passed away in 2015,so experiencing Bing Bong's Death had a big impact on me. One scene I hate was the dream scene,because of the clown. That clown is scary as heck,and this caused me trauma.
Inside Out is one of my all time favorite Disney & Pixar movie. I actually learned a lesson when I was 11 years old that it's okay to be sad sometimes. 😰😭 I'm excited to see Inside Out 2 in theaters.😀
Joy is an example of toxic positivity. She kept belittling Sadness as if Sadness wasn't good enough

I love love LOVE this movie! The more I watch it, the more I love it. I think it's because the more I watch it, I notice really creative details like how Anger always beats up Fear when he tries to stop him or crowds over him, it signifies how our own anger overpowers our fear from doing a bad thing when we're angry like when Riley ran away. Also the way Joy tries to leave Sadness out, it signifies how our inner joy tries to not let our inner sadness overcome us like when Sadness said "I should drive right" and Joy subtly stops her. Also when Joy and Sadness got sucked out of the memory tube, after fighting, it showcased Riley's sadness and joy trying to take control and it eventually makes us not feel either which then leads to depression. Anyway, such a great movie and I'm really looking forward to the sequel. I hope it'll be good. I mostly trust Pixar with their sequels except some occasions so I have hopes.
I absolutely love how the emotions themselves do not feel JUST the emotions they embody but also the other ones as well. To me it shows how every emotions has different layers, like at the end of the movie, when you are happy you are not just happy, it is tied to other emotions as well. Same with sadness, anger. Emotions are complex, not just one thing
The first time watching this movie, I already knew Bing Bong was going to do the self sacrifice even before they got onto the cart for the final time, mostly do to the way he said "I got a good feeling about this one".
He knew then and there he wasn't going to make it, yet he kept it close to the chest to insure that Joy would put her all into making it to the top.

People always see Sadness as the mom’s head as meaning she’s depressed. But in my head, I think it means she’s more driven by empathy. That’s why she was able to pick up on Riley’s emotions at the dinner table.
I don't normally do re-watch reactions but not only do I love your perspective and commentaries but it's Inside Out which I rank up there with the original Toy Story so I couldn't resist. Keep them coming, I love your reactions.

I think Sadness matures to include empathy, judging by how the mom’s blue emotion acts - kind and connective. Mom’s Sadness isn’t demonized the way Riley’s is so it acts in full including empathy - which Riley’s Sadness also displays frequently. (Similarly, Dad’s Anger seems more assertive than rage in its behavior.)
The ONLY reason I didn’t cry didn’t Bing Bong’s sacrifice was because my tears were already spent on Joy lamenting Riley’s forgotten memories. Holy shit that hit me hard, especially with the sticking tongue out while coloring.
I remember a picture in a photo album of me coloring in Sunday comics with a marker with my tongue sticking out as a little kid. But I don’t have that memory myself. So yeah. That was a lot. 😭
When they're tossing memories, they're not just getting rid of stuff she doesn't need. They're getting rid of stuff that was associated with the island that was just destroyed.
And for the record, if at any point you've ever said, "I'm not a kid anymore.", that's how you know YOUR goofball island has been destroyed.
My goofball island was destroyed when I was 12, and I *remember* it. I had been playing with my siblings in one of the McDonald's playgrounds when they used to have them, and suddenly, I just felt different and went to go sit down with my parents at the table.
When they asked me why I wasn't playing with the rest of my siblings, I said, "It doesn't feel fun anymore."
To which they both smiled to each other, and one of them said, "You're growing up."
I think my goofball island grew back later though, just in a different way. I'd picture it as a stage with a microphone in the middle, like for a comedian. I joke around only with the people I'm closest to, but maybe that will expand in time.
Honestly, I'm just glad it's back, to any capacity. I've been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and BPD, so my emotions are often all over the place, and usually more on the negative side. I left the religious cult I was raised in, and my abusive parents and ex-husband, I've been through it. I'm trying to learn to be patient with myself. It's okay that I'm not happy or goofy all the time, and I don't expect myself to be. For a while, I thought I'd never be truly happy or laugh again, but I was fortunately wrong.

The fears of life that we can't do anything about ... paying taxes until we die and trying to buy a house but no matter how hard we work we never will buy it. Dolphins also suck.
But this is one of those films that genuinely makes a difference in the world. It encourages people to look inward.

The two points that make me cry is Bing Bongs death and when Riley comes home and asks her parents to not be mad. While I know she’s knows she did something she shouldn’t have, it’s heartbreaking when kids blame themselves for something they shouldn’t feel guilty for. And that’s the thing, she didn’t ask them to not be mad at her for trying to run away, she hoped they would be mad because she wasn’t their “happy little girl.”
I’m guessing the parents didn’t tell her they were moving because it probably happened abruptly due to his job. So there was likely no real preparation for anyone.
Back to Bing Bong for a second. His death is a true death. As I’ve said to other reactors, if the idea of death is that someone lives on in peoples memories and being forgotten is true death. It’s the reason it’s so devastating aside from his sacrifice, even if we don’t realize it on a deeper lvl.

Most of the time I feel like I’m not “allowed” to break down because my friends and family need me to be available for a shoulder to cry on. The same way that Riley’s mom says “you’ve stayed our happy girl” my family has made me the family peacemaker and peacekeeper.
With my parents it was the reverse: my father’s “lead emotion” was sadness and my mother’s was “anger”.
My favorite character is sadness but whenever I talk about this movie and her my friends always say "I hated sadness she was always ruining things touching stuff" but with joy being a helicopter parent(emotion) sadness is basically like repunzel just striving to experience new things. Additionally does her touching the memories actually cause a problem? Because when the other emotions touch the memories it doesn't turn into their personal color so maybe the memory was always meant to be a sad one it just never had the opportunity to be because joy was blocking her from the control board harder than a beaver making a dam. Like the circle of sadness-

I always suppress my sadness and I was always trying to be the good son, the good brother, the god boyfriend… but I always unhappy. And guess what? I was always suppressing my sadness. Something is Chasing Me is making me think of North by Northwest, with the guy being chased by the airplane.
It's important to remember that the emotions aren't just what they are on the surface, especially for the adults. Sadness is also Compassion. Anger is also Determination. They have their positive sides as well.
People read too much into the Mum's lead emotion being sadness, the whole film is about how sadness is not a bad thing. For instance sadness is the smartest emotion, pretty sure its more of a reference to her mothers emotional intelligence. As opposed to say Joy who routinely doesn't listen to what anyone else says or thinks and tends to be quite stupid.
I also think it plays into the comforting nature of the mom. Mom’s Sadness was able to pick up on little cues that something was wrong and come up with a plan to help Riley feel better. Oftentimes, people who experience a lot of sadness tend to be really empathetic towards others. That’s how I take it.
My leading emotion is Fear without a shred of doubt. Lol

Owning a home isn't as simple as it seems. If damages happen to your home it is you who pays for the damages. Chipped paint, clogged pipes, water burst, you pay for it, all of it and it's worse if the workers don't get there on a timely way.

Like the mom’s sadness seems more concerned and responsible than balling crocodile tears.

The thing people forget is that Sadness doesn't make Riley's sad situations. Sadness is supposed to drive Riley during sat situations to get her through it. Just like Fear takes the wheel when danger is about and Anger takes the controls when things aren't fair. Sadness is the only one suited to navigate Riley through loss and grief. That's why Sadness is in charge in Mom's mind, because Mom's job is get the entire family through loss and grief, while Dad's job is get the family through danger and disorder. It's an overlooked nuance that I think is important.
Joy was trying to control Sadness and then she has to work with Sadness to fix Riley. That was a lesson Joy needed to learn.

I do wish you watched the end credits, it had a lot of funny moments. Anyway this was an amazing movie with a unique concept I tend to think about every once in awhile. I wonder what the mind looks like for someone with a photographic memory? Do they just not have a pit and it is all just more long term storage with super fast recovery lanes? I feel like people can make a video game about this kind of thing. Like one of those city builders only it is inside the mind.
I hope in the end of 2nd movie or the 3rd if Pixar would ever do it. It shows a grown up adult Riley as a Astronaut on the moon.
Has anybody else noticed that Riley is the first non-binary character in the Pixar canon? If you notice the other characters (mon, dad, teacher, hockey boy) I'll have emotions that are the same gender as the character Riley's emotions are both male and female. Non-binary. Thumbs up Pixar.

Gets me a tad emotional when hockey island collapses.
Not bad. You actually understood that the emotions aren't necessarily heroic or villainous. You understood Sadness from the start and for the record, Jill's Sadness shows how emotionally intelligent and empathic she is and Bill's Anger shows how assertive and passionate he is. The fact that Joy and Sadness (mainly Sadness) are utterly villified and the fact that so many can't see the purpose for Sadness and Anger says how emotionally dumb our society are.

8:38 When I first saw this movie, I thought it was the *ham* that Riley didn't like, since that's what I personally dislike about Hawaiian pizza (I used to just swallow it whole as a kid), and apparently vegetarianism is more common in girls and women.

I also don’t think it’s a certainty they didn’t tell her, there very well could have been a time jump and she could have been informed. But for this reaction I went with a diff observation. 😊
🙄 I've always had a major issue with this movie: How come "Sadness" has a counterpart named "Joy" but "Fear" doesn't have a counterpart named "Courage" and "Anger" doesn't have a counterpart named "Calm"? 🤔 It seems a bit arbitrary. 😉
Because there’s 6 universal emotions that pop up throughout human society: joy, sadness, anger, disgust, fear, and surprise. (Surprise doesn’t show up bc it kinda goes hand in hand w/ fear)
The other emotions come through for those. Courage would be Joy and Anger combined, because of wanting to fight forward and feeling good about that. Calm would be Joy and Sadness combined, like we saw after Riley finished crying in the arms of her family how she felt less stressed out.
It's highly possible the mom was a depressed person before she met the dad and have Riley. I think that's why Sadness is the leader emotion for the mom.
What sucks is that they recasted Fear and Disgust in the 2nd one.
First off, how are dolphins awful? They’re one of the most beautiful, most majestic creatures you could possibly think of.
Second off, I know a lot of movies teach morals and lessons in life but specifically this movie teaching audiences that crying is tolerable doesn’t really make any sense. Even saying that witout sadness, there would be no joy gets confusing. I’m not saying I hated the movie. I pretty liked it for the most part but it always gets me pondering why it must be as good to cry as lots of people apparently think it is. I hadn’t realized till a few years ago that, like I said, lots of people think it’s okay to cry but I always see it as a sign of suffering, a situation of sadness, a moment of misery, etc. Some friends and I have discussed such a topic like this and I still don’t understand why joy, in general, would need sadness in general. Not to mention Sadness already fucked up her moment of introduction in her new school and by doing that, basically and originally, caused all that inner chaos of Riley’s that ensued throughout the movie including Bing Bong’s death. Lots of people think Joy was a bitch for always wanting Riley to be happy and granted, nobody can always be happy, especially Riley, but Joy also wanted Riley not to be miserable either. Perhaps, that happiness may have been the first thing Riley ever felt when she was born. But, like I said, when says that it’s okay to cry and suffer and shit like that, it leaves me wondering why people consider it to be healthy, etc. It’s a blur as to why there would be no joy witout sadness.
I think the important thing to recognize is that the actual act of crying isn’t suffering. It’s the signal of suffering. It’s a catharsis mechanism. It not only benefits you from a physiological perspective, but like in the movie, it’s a signal to others that you are in need of help. We are often told to bottle up our feelings and not to cry, but that causes a whole mess of mental issues and complexes down the line. At the end of the day, we are social creatures, and we need to be willing to ask for help when needed.
I’m glad you brought this up. I also agree that Joy is often demonized too much, when in reality she doesn’t know better. She’s an emotion in a child’s brain. They all have a lot to learn. At the end of the day, all the five emotions care about is doing what they think is best for Riley.
