I must say, Clariss, I’m actually surprised that you were so deep in this subject for this movie that you knew certain topics due to personal experience. Someone claimed that they interviewed teens who went to very similar experiences like Riley did and if they brought licensed therapists to this, I wouldn’t be surprised because Pixar excels at one thing and one thing only: realism. Speaking from one Latino to another, I too was very pissed off that Anxiety took complete control of Headquarters that not only she imprisoned the main emotions but in a span of just 3 days, she changed who Riley Andersen is as an individual. In fact, for being too damn stubborn, she has caused harm to the very first person she made friends with ever since she moved to California. The way you were expressing of how our emotions increase dramatically as we become older is very true and tricky. I don’t wanna sound sexist but since girls are more emotionally driven than boys, they’re quite a handful, especially teen girls.
On a side note, when Riley was having an Anxiety attack, I was so worried that mentally, I was slashing out at her until she finally came to her senses. When Joy and the others were hugging Riley’s new Sense of Self, I believe it serves as a metaphor of “holding yourself together” and I love that because yeah, she been through way too much that she doesn’t deserve to feel this pain at all. I’m glad that afterwards, she remained friends with Grace and Bree after going their separate ways and gained new ones with the Firehawks. Plus, I agree; Valentina really is a chill person that while everyone else was giving Riley a hard time, she was sticking out for her since she can relate when she was in her place before. With the name Valentina Ortiz, I can’t help myself but to think that she too is a Latina. Hell, she even looks like one too. 😉

That actually does make sense and it’s really good that they have someone who really does speak that particular language instead of another who pretends to know it. Once again, Pixar being very realistic with their stuff. I mean, they did do Ratatouille, a movie that is centered in a kitchen in the very capital of France.

36:30 - "She's trying to form a whole self quickly".... How many of us can relate to feeling like we need to come up with a new persona on the spot to try to fit in? I've had several names in my life because frequent trauma made me create different "identities" (not to the extent of DID) to try to be someone else who would be accepted. I sometimes stumble across old Facebooks with past names and it reminds me of just how desperate I was to hide from everything and be someone new.

As someone who is anxious about a lot of things, I relate to this movie. Anxiety is a lot of overthinking. Overthinking your feelings. Burying your self esteem below the ground. Surrounding your thought process. I like how Pixar was able to handle something like a John Hughes film if he would’ve done animation back in the day.

I read a lot of articles and such after watching movies, just to see how everything was made and the behind the scenes. What I found out was that the creators of Inside Out 2, actually brought in several teenage girls from around the world to rate/give advice to make the movie ten times more authentic and relatable. And I think that was an amazing idea for sure.

Not being able to experience as much joy as we did in childhood is a hard thing to come to terms with. But that does not mean there is "less" Joy in the world. Joy may be less readily available to you at the drop of a hat, but it is always out there if you take control of your own console and look for it. That's why Riley's ending is so cathartic and wholesome. She learns to look for Joy for herself, not expect it to just be there.

    • @Arcaneblush
      @Arcaneblush 3 місяці тому +6

That line is actually something the director was inspired by his own life to include. He was looking through photos from his childhood, and particularly birthday photos, and realized that he was less happy and excited for every passing year and by his teens, didn't seem happy at all at his own birthday.

@@Toonwalla2010I think we just have to alter our definition of joy. It’s not that we experience it less, but we also are encumbered by more worries, responsibilities that impact our ability to feel it as freely. Joy isn’t as simple as it was when we were kids.

I think they really improved in every possible way when compared to the first movie. In the first one, the scene of Joy being down (mourning the lost memories) was a bit overdone imo. Here her down time was much better done, much more balanced (no constant crying). For me personally, I really didn't care too much about Bing Bong - here the silly characters are more digestable for me, with fun animation styles and they don't try so hard to be smth "deeper". And ofc the topic of the sense of self, dealing with anxiety etc is much more relatable to me as an adult than mourning a loss of a childhood imaginary friend lol (but the biggest parts with accepting Sadness and realizing how memories can trigger many emotions was great ofc). Overall, the first movie is great with no doubt but has some weaker moments imo, here in the second movie they improved everything.

I am a 30 year old guy that experienced anxiety attack constantly when i was 21 and went to therapist regularly back than. The scene when Riley has a panic attack and what happened inside her, just made me stuned because that is so relatable. It brings me back to my past and made me cry hard because that was soooo hard and it felt like nobody understands.
But, the way the all of the emotions hugged riley beliefs, it speaks too deep for me that made me burst to tears because that what made me healed back than, give myself time to process and accept who i truly am. The only validation I need is actually from me…

I agree that they absolutely nailed what anxiety, and an anxiety attack, feels like. how it can begin from a very real and valid place, then quickly spiral into that disordered thinking, overriding all the other emotions and leaving you stuck in anxiety.
Something i found particularly beautiful is at the end where Riley literally called forth Joy. Of course finding joy in hard times is not that quick or simple, but we can keep allowing and calling for it to come forward.

As someone struggling with overthinking and suspecting some form of anxiety/anxiety disorder this movie hit way too hard. It feels so relieving to see a movie portraying so well how I experience things when so many people around me can't seem to understand it. It makes me hope that it helps people who don't experience feelings and emotions like that to grasp this concept better, since it is really hard to explain.

  • @SirSpuddington
    @SirSpuddington Місяць тому +3

One of the things I liked about this movie was that Val is not an antagonist. She's only ever friendly to and understanding of Riley, which helps put more focus on the main theme of the story, which is that the problems Riley has at this time in her life are almost entirely in her own head, literally. It's a good demonstration of how you can be around people who actually do like you and are understanding and supportive, and yet still be vulnerable to your own anxiety if you haven't learned how to control it yet. That's what makes anxiety disorder so pernicious - it alters and distorts your perception and processing of the world around you in such a way that it prevents you from seeing things as they actually are, and in doing so it reinforces the delusions that it substitutes in for reality. It's a viciously effective negative feedback loop that is difficult to break, but never impossible.

This film resonates with me more than the first one. While I’ve certainly been in Riley’s shoes in both films, I think the battle with anxiety just hits harder. Anxiety can be so destructive and all consuming that you continue to fixate on things that most people left in the past. I think that’s why I like that line about how they don’t get to decide who Riley is. You’re not just one thing. We’re multi-faceted, so even if you struggle with anxiety, that’s only a small piece of who you are.

32:57 I think it all started bc of the information that her first friends will go to a different school, so Riley immediately assumed that there's no point in inviting them to Val's group. All the bad decisions started because Riley is scared of losing her current best friends and that in a new place she won't be able to find new ones.
And it's baffling to me to see how Val, even though she is supposed to be this "cool girl", is actually very nice and supportive to Riley. She was even defending her when the other girl was trash talking about her. But Riley (and other emotions, not even Joy's team, surprisingly) didn't even notice that they don't need to "fight" for Val's approval. Val was already on Riley's side.

Pixar is really good at making the audience sympathize with the antagonist when they want to. That one stupid tear that forms in Anxiety's eye just hurts. You get fairly annoyed by her the whole movie but when that happens suddenly it all makes sense. You can feel the pain Anxiety's going through. Wanting the best for Riley matters so much to her and it's destroying her that she doesn't know how to fix the situation--in a way the belief system 'I'm not good enough' isn't just what Riley feels, it's what Anxiety is feeling.

PIXAR had a 'Riley Squad' of teen girls that came in monthly or so to review what they did. And, yes, PIXAR has verbal, body language, facial non verbal communications experts they use. In all movies where needed that guide thier efforts. Your editing was good. Some reviewers butcher, or leave that crucial scene of Joy's outburst out. Joy has blue hair, blue eyes so she is sad, and mostly Joy. Your experiences have added so much to your review, made it more real. First movie, Riley needed Joy. In this movie, Riley 'wants' Joy, she decides, as she begins to be more self directed.

Wow, just listening to that mini therapy session at the end brought me back to a time when I was mentally out of sorts. I was in my second to last year of college in 2021 when I slowly started to mentally spiral. I was majorly burned out through assignments and homework for which most of it was too much for me to handle (I have high-functioning autism). I kept it to myself due to me worrying about how my family and friends would react if I told them. I eventually came out on my IG story and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made. I found a great resource on my campus and it’s made me much better. It’s been 3 years since I came out, and with September being Suicide Prevention month, I feel grateful that I’m still alive and kicking. And I wish that my story can help someone else who’s struggling. So thank you for reminding me why I’m still alive. And also Happy Birthday! 🎉❤

    1. What Bloofy did speaking to the screen is what we all consider breaking the fourth wall.
    2. If Anxiety was a villain, she would definitely be misunderstood.
    3. Anxiety tryna make Riley as much as positively possible was only yet another example of Oogway stating one often meets his or her destiny on the road he or she takes to avoid it.
    4. It always makes me wonder now if you lost joy when you were growing up. I only watched Tim, Malbread, and the following girls of Bulgaria, Ellie Landgo, Michelle Moon Sugar, Magic Magy, and Foxy Laura see this movie so far and it makes me wonder if any of them have ever lost joy themselves while growing up.
    5. I don’t think having empathy is what Riley had in mind for an example of Sadness being strong.
    6. Ever since last year, I’ve actually practiced a technique called inner peace which I know you’ve heard of before. It can be a meditation but it’s really more of a sense of self control. Those of us that do find inner peace find it in many ways. Some take a few deep breaths as you had mentioned. Some play calm music in their heads. Some do both. Others find it through pain and suffering like I have. However, I learned to use that music sometimes to keep myself calm. I’m also willing to help anyone find said peace as well including you. I tried teaching Magy and Laura how to practice inner peace but all they get out of it is either just saying, “Inner peace,” or saying, “Inner peace, dinner, please, dinner with peas.” And, sometimes, Laura just straight up refuses to find peace. Anyone can say, “Inner peace,” but the secret is you cannot just say it. You cannot just think it. You have to feel it. That is where you truly find peace. Remind yourself of what gives you peace. I know Moon Sugar, Ellie, and Laura’s sister, Viki Out Of Space, also of Bulgaria, practice inner peace. Come to think of it, maybe Bisscute of Romania attempted to practice a bit of inner peace herself as well. Like I said, we all find inner peace in many ways but if you want, I can help you do a session anytime anywhere. Just lmk.

      1. Imaginations are dumb so they won't know if they are actually talking or expressing to someone or not
      2. Anxiety never is a villain, rather a mental disorder
      3. Since of that, Anxiety is getting worried for events. Trying to come up anything before that makes it more feeling anxious or anticipation if it will fail or not
      4. Joy can be suppressed, any emotions is. Meant of Joy will only come for specific reasons if your gonna feel it rather than negatives

Happy belated Birthday Clariss! Just discovered this. May JOY pilot your emotions.
Loved the reference to George Orwell's Novel 1984, and the reference to the classic
Apple Macintosh computer commercial in 1984.
Jiminy Loving Toaster Strudels! Rilye's panic attack is so spot on it's frightening.
Riley clutching her chest is indicative of an anxiety induced panic attack. Repeated
Leg bouncing. The breathing she is doing, probably while counting down or up.
That is a technique used to alleviate anxiety and panic attacks. Great movie.

Anxiety is such a difficult thing to live with and seeing it explained in such a concrete way made it easy to grasp. I too hope this movie helps reach others and gives them hope things can get better. Looking forward to more reactions. =)

I'm a 37 year old guy who watched this movie and broke down at the end at the panic/anxiety attack scene. So now I'm watching others watch it trying to understand why it made me an emotional wreck. I suffer panic attacks and while it's easy to say it was because I empathized with riley in that scene, and that's why I broke down.. I feel like I was missing something. The way you describe anxiety throughout your reaction so far has brought to light a lot that I didn't know about. I'm at the 25 minute mark when you describe cognitive distortions and dysfunctional thoughts.
I think I just broke at the end because of the cumulation of everything in the film. I can't wait to watch the rest and see what other insights you have, you better ugly face cry at the end or else... OK thanks unpausing now!
Edit: dammit, 44 minutes got me again

In the first movie, we saw Riley get so depressed that nothing the emotions did to the console affected Riley. Here, we see the Sense of Self, as well as a literal bottling up of emotions. I think, at the risk of retreading that ground, they should do a spinoff movie, where someone, through emotional neglecting by their parents (intentional or otherwise, though preferably unintentional), gets to a point where they want so much to feel nothing at all because they think it's better than feeling anything, that they conjure up a new "emotion". An "emotion" whose entire existence is to feel nothing. An "emotion" called Apathy. An "emotion" that takes things literally, and is more analytical, logical, and rational about their decisions.
Why a spinoff film? Well, I think the main series could easily stick to Riley. But also, Apathy is a thing most seen in teenage boys, and men in general. And with the common social understanding that men aren't allowed to feel anything, or at least to show their feelings, it would be a great way to tackle Men's mental health, while still being general enough to apply to anyone, man or otherwise. And I think it's important to show how much a parent's behavior can affect their children's mental health, as well, because most parents are painfully unaware. And in the Inside Out films, Riley's parents are basically the best parents ever. I want to show parents who aren't the best, while still acknowledging they're doing everything they can. And that's something that should be told in a spinoff.
Edit: All of that should be told in general, but when it comes to Inside Out, it should be in a spinoff.

Not a huge deal, but Lance, the video game character, isn't drawn. I'm thinking you just misspoke, but he is, in fact, animated with CG, like most of the other characters. But his model was made using less polygons than the emotions, which essentially means his model is sharper and more triangular. He's literally rough around the edges.

Anxiety can help to a certain extent by keeping us aware but so easily becomes a “villian” without the support from other emotions. It’s a balance, but understanding that it’s NOT ABNORMAL for someone to become anxiety ridden helps a lot of people learn to remind themselves through difficult situations that you’re ALLOWED and WORTHY of FEELING OTHER EMOTIONS that can help you process difficult thoughts. Anxiety builds, and recognition of struggling can help you remind yourself that it’s okay to feel every single emotion to get you into a better state mentally. Being present is important! Love to everyone here, we all struggle and you are not alone.❤❤

I have had two anxiety attacks and one brief encounter with sleep paralysis, that anxiety attack looked the way that felt... Can't move, hard to breathe, only thing you can think is to calm down but you can't calm down because you're going to have a heart attack but that's why you need to calm down and you just.. fucking... can't... at least not until you somehow either talk yourself out of it or relax enough to actually take a nap.
That was real af. The writing of the movie was kinda weird, felt like a freshman's year of school wrapped up into 3 days; but that is my only criticism. The emotional impact of this movie felt like a worthy successor in terms of adult relatability, and I for one also struggle with "I'm not good enough", I ugly cried when that line was said (was also quite buzzed as it wasn't expected to cut that deep lol).
In my humble opinion, this was a masterpiece of a film.
