I played CSGO with a drawing tablet, and it went WAY better than expected! I tested out my new peripheral with a good ol' fashion Unboxafragathon, where I open a case and have to get frags with whatever skin I get inside of a cs:go deathmatch. I think drawing tablets, given enough practice, could be as good as a mouse, or even better! - Ігри

I would love a "Tablet SoloQ to Global" Series (or smth similar) so so so much :D
After seeing what you are doing with only one day of using it, I'd love to see how far this could actually go!
we didnt even get to finish the regular soloQ to global yet :(
What drawing tablet are you using?
I agree
Kariyu is doing that for valorant
Having seen a few people do something similar in valorant, it's definitely really interesting

Wise choice of words. Very wise. LOL
I found you channel when I was 12 in 6th grade. Now im 20 years old, working fulltime in a kitchen, and taking college classes full time. Im not any good at counterstrike (used to be) but I love watching your videos. Takes me back to a simpler time, when all I cared about was getting off school and hoping that today would be my rank up game. Thanks for teaching me this amazing game war owl, and thanks for being such a positive influence
great to hear Alec, glad my videos had a positive impact on you! I forget I've been doing this so long sometimes, and that a bunch of people watched my vids as teenagers and are now adults. cool stuff
I'm in the same boat. Found his channel at 14, now 20 nearing 21, and I always click on WarOwl's new uploads so fast to feel that random nostalgia rush all over me time and time again. I'll never forget Stop, Scope, Flick, Fire or WarOwl's old SoloQ videos that I used to watch religiously.
I don't really play CS much these days, if at all, I've only been enjoying some light amounts of Apex. WarOwl is exactly the nostalgia I need to keep me going.

Next video: Using eye tracking to play CSGO.
I actually wonder if that would be better or worse overall. Better in the sense that your reaction time would be insanely fast but worse because you are separating your aim from your movement by an additional level and you wouldn’t be able to use peripheral vision effectively

Osu player: _allow us to introduce ourselves_
Literally why I have my dusty barely used tablet lol. Mouse + kb player btw
most osu players suck at games like csgo/tf2 so..
i once knew a guy who was an avid osu player, and he used his tablet to play csgo. his movement and aim were phenomenal, literally looked like aimbot sometimes. he would always awp because it felt the most similar to playing osu, and he could flick with that thing like an actual pro. he never really bothered with utility, and i think that dragged him down a little as he was LEM, plus he would always five stack with lower ranked players. once he got that awp in his hands though, it was game over for the enemy team. absolutely nuts.
@@blehnya0w0 most players aren't being jack of all trade of video game too
@@blehnya0w0 hi i have 6k hours in cs and 700 hours in osu ;)
One thing that I think he didn't get to see is when you try to use any semi-auto weapon, you need to tap and lift every time you shoot, which arguably ends up making you worse off than if you were to use a mouse
Actually this concept has been proven sucessful, at least in Valorant (lol). I remember watching this top OSU player "Kariyu" in diamond ELO play with pen. He was really comfortable with a pen since had hundreds of hours of experience with one on OSU (which requires snappy aim and smooth tracking at a high level) so when he tried valorant, the transition was pretty easy. He hit some pretty nutty clips lol
btw he had to end his series cuz riot's anti cheat flagged the pen input software as "cheats" (or smth?) and he couldnt play anymore. tho this shouldnt be a problem in CS
Thats scammy by riot
Man riot what a bitch move. That's why they never win against Volvo lol.
Valorant's anti cheat is annoying af. Does it still require a restart to start the damn service if it isn't left running 24/7? That's what drove me to uninstall the game, I keep shit closed if its not being used and I'm not gonna let riot's anti cheat just chill in the background forever so I don't have to restart to play a game.
@@Veerorith Yes, it still requires that
i think it was also a drivers issue after a few updates on top of it all, and tbh i would argue a non "top player" can achieve similar levels of success as long as they also have had valorant experience beforehand similar to kariyu, any input that can make accurate small fast adjustments can succeed imo, like how solarlight did it with gyro on controller
This was a fantastic return to early fun memories from the channel.
I really wonder how much was written in and how much was ad libbed, because it all felt so natural.
you could change the pen pressure in the driver settings so that a mouse button click is only registered when you Press harder on the tablet.
then you can have ur pen rest on the tablet and when u want to shoot you just need to press a bit harder
4:48 Okay let me buy 100 keys now
If the drawing tablet really becomes a viable option for those who takes the time to learn it, then I think we would see the same kind controversy the hitbox is causing in the FGC.
Exactly what I was going to reference. If the FGC is any indication, some people will definitely switch if it becomes more viable
i can sense multiple companies designing a gaming pen tablet
@@JnZ77 can you explain whats going on in the fgc?
@@DaFifaKid A different type of controller called a hitbox/mixbox has been gained popularity amongst top players recently because it allows you to perform inputs that are not possible on a standard arcade stick. At the last EVO tournament for Street Fighter, I think half of the top 8 players used them. There was lots of discussion about if they should be allowed or not and if they were even possible to restrict in the first place.
smash melee enjoyer here, people are already shitting bricks from people using boXXes to game at a competitive level. the boXX was made since its creator, hax$, blew out a tendon in his arm and cannot compete using a normal gamecube controller. fast forward to 2022-2023, and now theres controversy on how boXX players can teleport out of getting combo'd, and now its a complete clusterfuck about controller legality. this is what happens when a 20 year old game is pushed to its limits, meta is no longer about characters, combos, and map selections. its all about the controller (when it comes to TAS levels, but we arent superhuman terminators [as of now]), depending on who you ask and whether or not they agree on this being such a case to be humored.

@@sid6645 that would be a banger video
No way! I was just thinking about your unboxafragathon videos earlier today!
4:49 bet you'll hold your tongue after today hahahahah
I tried this a few yers ago and was surprised how good it was. Considering I had played cs for like 5+ years at that point, I didn't think my aim would be anywhere near that of my mouse, but in some cases it was actually even better. Tapping felt very good, and you just needed to draw the spray pattern for recoil. But it just didn't feel reliable enough to use and moving around was a pain. Also, you get cramp in your hand very fast.
I had the same experience. The only way I think it could work if you had one like for the size of a desk. The way it works for people who haven't tried it is that you set how many pixels you move per centimeter. You can calculate it pretty easy especially as it is dpi x sens, since sens is just a multiplier. For example a 1 sens, 800 dpi would be 800 pixels per centimeter. I think it could be explored, but to obtain those types of drawing pads are ridiculous expensive and unnecessary for most uses of a drawing pad, drawing.
@@julianpare Yeah, would've been good if the pad was at least the same size as the monitor but mine is about the same size as the one in the video, so making full 360 turns was hard.
To avoid cramping and to make turning around easier with a drawing pad, bind +left and +right to two seperate reapective keys in your config. Changing "cl_yaw speed" changes how fast the +left/right commands turn you, so play around with it until you find something comfortable.
For cramping, I wonder if the osu! community would have any advice, seeing as how tablets are the meta
I've also messed with it on a pro digital tablet monitor that's much more accurate than touchscreens. You can literally tap heads and it's fun for a laugh but not as good as you'd think.
This is incredible. WarOwl doesn't draw OR play osu! but he is playing CSGO, on a tablet. What a time to be alive it's amazing.
This was my exact thought LMAO osu moment
I like the transition from the sponsor back to the video. Glad I didn't accidently skip that part.
The question of whether a tablet could be better than a mouse reminds me a lot of the arcade stick vs. hitbox controller differences in fighting games. In that genre the more experimental option has been proven to be largely better so I find it really interesting that counterstrike could be iterated on in a similar way
Debate surrounding optimal controllers is a pretty big one in the FGC, it'd be hilarious if CSGO had it.
my favorite is that a cheapass keyboard can totally be better than a $250 fight stick to the point they put keys on said $250 fight stick
@@DrRyan82994 Yeah, buttons are way better for directional inputs than a stick for fighting games lol. It's way easier to be precise.
Circle clickers coming out of the wood works
I'd actually love to see how you do in a practice comp match or 2 with this. Maybe a match against your contemporaries too to really compare and contrast.
4:35 Close but not quite! Ambidexterity is the ability to use both hands with equal proficiency for everything. I think you're looking for Cross-Dominant, where some things are done left handed and others right handed. I do things like writing, using a fork, and some sports left handed, but several other things with my right hand such as golf or shooting!
This, this is true knowledge.
Back on CS:S, I once used my cheap drawing tablet to play. The thing is, the rotation of the camera was made by computing how far was the mouse from the center and puting it back to the center. And... my pen was ALWAYS far from the center. So whenever my pen was on the tablet, the camera was flipping like crazy !
That's because of how the tablets work. If you want to fix that issue, see if you can use the tablet's drivers to make it where the tablet acts more like a mouse, where it doesn't constantly set the cursor position. That way you can aim properly
Been playing with a tablet for 2 years. I am silver 3. Mostly think that the fights that matter are generally better with a mouse rather than a tab. I think a full tablet with screen would be op since you are turning csgo into a literal point and click game if you set your dpi right!
Also gotta add: A lot of tablets only support absolute mouse, its very likely your tablet is supported by OpenTabletDriver which does support relative mouse modes which are required to properly play csgo on a tab!
turning with touchscreen would be an absolute pain though, how do you think you would even go about doing that?
@@derp3044 either use keys to rotate or use the tablet differently: calculate the input as a vector from the center of screen (so your crosshair will center itself on the pen), and tapping the edge of the screen a couple times will snap you around. I'm sure there's a better technical term for this
The latency would be something else.
Your thoughts about the pressure you put on a mouse when you left click takes me back to when I broke my right index finger and had a splint for about a month. I could use a mouse but left clicking was clumsy. So I used the space bar for firing and found recoil in games at the time (1.6, Source, COD 1) so much easier to control, moving the mouse around without clicking just felt so much more natural. I never made the switch full time because it would seriously mess with muscle memory for everything else I did on a PC but it was an interesting experiment.
Awesome video, this happens very often in the fighting game community regarding controllers. Most of the time it just comes down to everything having its ups and downs, a mouse you use for every day computer usage and are comfortable, while also having things like extra buttons for macros, and where the pen is super accurate, but you can't strafe jump/bhop/360 no scope as easy
War owl satisfying my cravings with these frequent uploads
WarOwl, if you liked the feeling of grasping a pen to aim, you might want to try a vertical mouse like the Logitech LIFT. With it vertical, you pinch it like a stylus. I feel it lets me click faster and more accurately. Of course there are also ergonomic benefits, carpal tunnel, etc. The LIFT also comes in a left handed version if you want to try using your keyboard with your right hand
Or try and use one in each hand and no keyboard. Counterstrike but it's a mouse infestation lol

I usually draw for hours with a tablet like that and I can imagine how tiring it could be for using it for playing games, but looks like I have to give this a try 😂
I do art as an hobby and yes I have actually tried using my tablet to play cs long time ago, for like a week (then I stopped because I didn't want to scratch my tablet too much) It's actually very viable as a mouse replacement, especially if you have steady hands.
Also the fact that I played osu! as a 5-digit player definitely was a factor for me.
I think the osu experience was the difference maker there lol
If you don't want to scratch your tablet you can cover it with vinyl (car or sticker). Had the same concern when I was playing osu a lot (I don't hover) and I covered it with some book cover protector self adhesive.

Something worthwhile noting, the best tablets for for this would be the CTL/CTH 480/680. Most tablets have hardware smoothing that you can't turn off and even the best tablets for aiming cap out at like 140Hz. Other tablets worth trying are the Gaomon S620, XPPen G640, Wacom CTL/CTH 472/672. Source: osu! player where tablets have been the meta since like 2011
Not really, the CTx tablets are part of the consumer line, which have a report rate of 133hz.
His tablet is part of the Professional line, which most have a report rate of 200hz.
The Gaomon S620 is good, even better with a firmware update.
The XPen G640 is a big no. it has angle snapping issues on top of the smoothing.
The CTL x72 is good, but his tablet is just better.
Glad to see this series come back
Something similar; back then, when I played with a laptop touchpad, I rebounded my keys to make it easier to play FPS.
It helped lessen the strain for my right hand since it was already doing all the aiming.
I even still used these binds long after I started using a mouse.
When I finally started using default binds, there was so much muscle memory that kept messing with me.
I still remember the binds I used:
"bind mouse1 +attack2"
"bind mouse2 +jump"
"bind space +attack"
It's not something drastic, but it made aiming with a touchpad so much easier and a bit less painful.
I think the stylus and drawing pad could be really good if a few binds were adjusted.
Osu players be like
I did this once, but with the tablet I have I just spun around infinitely, is there a workaround?
it needs to be put in "mouse mode"
there should be an option in your tablet's driver software to turn on 'mouse mode' or whatever they call it.
I tried a few different FPS games with touchscreens once, and the cursor movement didn't work at all. It just made the character fidget uncontrollably. His tablet is an input device, but isn't a monitor. That might be the difference.

The Unboxafragathon returns! Love this series!
I was expecting this to be a "We played Competitive Counterstrike with wierd rules" videos but an Unboxafragathon was a nice surprise :D
Some interesting stuff to note.
I was playing using my PTH860 on Team Fortress 2 and it really just worked. Main complaint was the hover range goes too far, and the "low power" hover range caused inconsistency when re-centering beyond just the "having to get used to using a tablet" bit. I was running with OpenTabletDriver in relative mode. Being a Soldier player, in particular I was impressed that flicking worked so well because of all the rocketjumping in normal games and even was completing tier 4 and I think a tier 5 jump map(my personal ceiling) on the pth860.
Other possible meta-breaking input device would be some form of hand tracking. Frankly, gyro aim without aim assist has better than mouse tracking in skilled hands, but due to the inherent momentum of gyros you generally *either* get great macromovement/flicks and good tracking or just have to perform macroadjustment with something else and get godly tracking. Hand tracking simply gets rid of that issue entirely. Imagine if you had buttons on your fingers and aimed with the alignment of the top of your hand, for example.
I've tried all three major form factors of trackball and it just is kind of worse than mouse unfortunately.
I actually tried this about 2 years ago when my mouse broke and I had to use my drawing tablet as a mouse because I didn't have extra money at the time for a new mouse. At some point, if you tweak the settings of your drawing tablet enough, you can aim instantly just by tapping in the general area of where you want to aim at.
These alternative input methods are a fascination of mine, I loved getting familiar with my drawing tabled and occasionally using the computer with it.
It's incredibly accurate but has a large range of motion, though in between large sweeps and fine movements it can get awkward.
As you mentioned it being the next best input to a mouse, I wonder how this would compare to flickstick+gyro.
Emphasis on gyro, which is a form of motion but accurate like a mouse, in contrast to accelerometer control like the Wii had.
While I don't play FPSes myself (not my interest), I have had success in Vintage Story with this input, where the combat can get fast paced and some of the crafting needs very fine accuracy.
Similarly to a drawing tablet, it offers great accuracy and a large range of motion, but it is significantly less straining even compared to a mouse, with exception to poorly tuned sensitivity where the gyro can become problematic.
when Warowl makes better commercials than companies with a PR team and millions of dollars.
Underrated that you use music from the game Transistor
Should try setting it up to where it actually records your draw lines in the background. Be neat to see what the most common lines are represented in an overlay.
