Really, the main reasons I want a screen to draw on is because I recently went to back good ol' pencil and paper and felt like I had more control over what I was doing. While I have gotten used to my pen tab over the two years I've had it, it still feels a little off at times. I like it when the lines I'm drawing are actually coming *from* the pen/pencil. Update: Got my hands on the XP-Pen 15.6 Pro a few months ago. Come to realize that a display tablet is exactly what I wanted. I'm loving this thing to bits!
number 6: you don't have to sell your soul to the devil everytime you have to calibrate the screen to the pen, it is never perfectly calibrated and i hate it so much
How do you calibrate it the way you like? I mean how many shots did it take to get that sensitivity and how long before it fell how of calibration again.
Katsudesu tiktok I don’t really know what you mean but everything depends on the posture you have or what angle you look at the screen, the calibration can be perfect when you are drawing completely straight but if you move your posture just a little it can effect the screen, so i always recalibrate it every time i change position, I can’t tell how many shots you have to take since I don’t know your preferences lmao, but I usually prefer a perfect calibration so i always spend 30 minutes a day trying to make it work

The disconnect between drawing on one surface and seeing it on another surface is the reason pen displays are much better for me. For other artists, this might not bother them. But seeing the ink appear right beneath my pen onto a pen display was a complete game changer for me and I wouldn't go back to a basic tablet if you paid me to. Spent years using a tablet and never felt as connected to my digital art as I do with a pen display
I've been using non screen tablets since like 2016 (tho stopped drawing too much in 2017-mid2018). And yeah i kinda feel that limitation, as much as my drawing skills have grown, i just can't get that much control in the lines and i feel like a screen tablet would help so much. I'm preparing myself to buy one soon and hopefully it goes well
One reason to get a pen tablet display : speeeeeed! I’ve been coloring for DC & Marvel for years, and one thing that matters to me the most when switching to a pen tablet display thingy is how fast I can get the brush stroke that I wanted. I worked on a pen tablet for a very long time, and I found out that my eye hand coordination is suck. For those like me, working directly on screen is a blessing. My speed when coloring a page is at least twice as fast compared when I was using a pen tablet. But hey, to each their own!
How can you work for both DC and Marvel. I thought there was a contract that you had to sign that stats you can't disclose information and can't work for another studio.

I have a Cintiq pro 16 and most of the time use it with the screen turned off because otherwise my neck and my hand start to hurt. I only use the screen for inking.
I also have a cintiq pro from last year, its way too expensive for what it is. Not worth it for me at least, but glad that my job bought me one. Still end up using my thinkpad tablet x1 way more than the cintiq
I had an artist friend who I tried to help once. I told him how he could protect the screen on his new expensive drawing monitor with clear vinyl. He said he didn't need to. A few years later he's complaining that his monitor is all scratched up and how it will cost so much money to replace it.
Pen tablet is still better. I used mine for years. Still using it although I bought cintiq pro 1 year back. Never using cintiq though, due to the viewing angle (posture). Viewing monitor with pen tablet is better for neck.
I've had my Cintiq 22HD for years. Still works great. Thing is, I bought it BEFORE I learned to draw; I didn't want any excuses. While it gave me confidence in drawing as a whole, it did not make me a good artist. Even after spending $2,000 on a Cintiq, I had to put in time to learn. The best and worst thing about digital art is that you can CTRL+Z every mistake as if it never happened. This makes you focus too much on corrections rather than pushing through it and continuing to draw -- which is what you want to learn. In the end, I forced myself to live with my mistakes by keeping sketchbooks that I draw in ink so that I cannot erase. That's when I really began to improve. $2k Cintiq vs. $100 Intuos tablet vs. $10 sketchbook and someone's stolen pen: while a screenless tablet vs. drawing display can bring about great arguments, the traditional sketchbook has a subtle power within it that cannot be reproduced by any tablet or display -- and I've used all three. Don't disregard sketchbooks; they are the simplest and most elegant records of history that remind you of who you were, reflect who you are, and motivate you to be the artist you still want to be.
Come to think of it Maximilian is right. Our Laptop Touchpad is the World Smallest Graphic Drawing Tablet! Hold the Touchpad down with one hand and use the other to draw freely. So we're basically paying for a Bigger Touchpad than the one on our Laptop. Go figure.
Here’s some advice for doing this, I do it all the time, it helps and works better than going in the a pinky. You should hold a pencil and push your pointer finger farther than the point/end of the pencil. This way it feels like you’re holding a tool and feels more stable

Thanks Brad! A really sage advice video. In my 35 year career as a designer/illustrator, my digital input was solely through a Wacom tablet. I had one of the first ones they made and over the years went through 4 more. You get used to the parallax, eye hand coordination issue after just a couple hours. Cintiques (or the Huion Kamvas 22 pro I now have) are cool and all, but they've not been the wow factor I expected over a simple tablet. Your 5 points are right on target. Drawing monitors are a handful of tech and take up a lot of space (not to mention money). I recommend your videos to folks all the time. Thanks for the info and effort.
Same. A lot of other comments are complaining about the hand-eye coordination but my sis and me never had any issues. While she does have a Cintiq now, when I used it, I didn't notice much of a difference tbh. I actually like the texture of my Bamboo tablet more. It's closer to drawing on paper. It's like Brad said, just having a new piece of fancy equipment isn't going to improve your art much.
This is some solid advice that might have prevented me from making an expensive mistake. I am not a digital artist. I don’t have that talent. I am more of a digital mechanical designer. I design and make blueprints but not on a draftsman level.
Get a Deco Pro (the "Large" model. 130 bucks only), still. Much bigger active area, is so much better in many ways than a Bamboo. You will notice it in your workflow. But no need to get a display tablet for those 400 - 600 euros.
Each to their own. I had been using a non-screen tablet for around 10 years and never got used to the feeling of disconnect. Took me a long time to accept they just weren't for me and I regret not going to a screen tablet sooner. We all have our methods and comforts. I don't think one is better than the other. Just focus on what works best for you, simple as that.
Preference. I feel actually the same way. Coming from traditional to a pen tablet is way too jarring and I honestly feel a screen tablet would work better for me. I have a better time drawing with a stylus on my phone than on my intuos
I completely agree, I've drawn on an intuos for a few months already and sometimes I can't even lineart, I sometimes switch to traditional where its much easier because I can move it around. I'm sometimes thinking of switching to my phone & pen nowadays.

As someone who is now looking into getting a Pen Display, because I feel like the bigger size and it not being flat on the desk will be better for my wrist. I've had my Wacom Bamboo for 11 years, and scratches and dings aside, it still works just as well as it ever has. I know it won't make my art better, but I do feel like drawing right on the screen will help me draw faster. Which is also really important.

As someone who has owned a Cintiq 13" HD for some years now, I can say that having a tablet screen can be a bit overrated. I actually ended up using my Cintiq more as a regular Intuos because of the bad posture problem giving me some nasty neck pain and because my main screen has way more screen space for me to check my artwork with. Once you have learned how to draw without a screen you really don't need one to work, so the novelty of having one really wore off for me over time. I only really think that getting a screen tablet is worth it if you have access to a solid work desk and a larger screen Cintiq, but that would mean spending some serious cash for something that could be done with a regular no screen tablet and a gaming screen. It's actually cheaper to get a great gaming screen with proper colour management and 1440p - 4k resolution as well as a no screen tablet than spending it on a single Cintiq that has similar specs as the gaming screen. My next purchase is actually going to be an Intuos Pro and a G7 (32" with HDR support) or G9 Odyssey screen (49" with excellent HDR support) depending on my budget, which will still be cheaper than buying a 24" Cintiq Pro (not even counting the desk needed to mount it). So yeah. I don't regret buying my Cintiq, but unless I have some serious cash to burn I am not planning on getting another one any time soon. Non-Cintiq Wacom tablets are good enough.
Do you still think the same way, and did you buy the Intuos Pro? I tried drawing with the screen and Wacom stylus on my old Thinkpad, but the screen space was too cramped and uncomfortable. I came to a similar conclusion as you did and bought myself a regular pen tablet so I can see my screen better.
@@zinput I bought the G9 Odyssey and Wacom Intuos Pro, yes. I do not regret it for one second. I still am going to use my Cintiq 13" since I bought the Intuos Pro primarily to work on it at school (didn't want to carry it back and forth every week so I could work at home or at school). The new screen is absolutely fantastic for painting thanks to how good the colour management is out of the box and it is so nice being able to paint with HDR enabled. The Intuos Pro is also very solid. Pretty happy that I got myself the large model, since it allows for larger sweeping brush strokes. It's a very good tablet.
Same here. My Cintiq 13”HD started leaking some sort of weird oil that I couldn’t identify so I thought that was a good oportunity to step down and go back to my old buddy Intuos Pen Small. Don’t regret a bit and it’s been so much better for my back health! I really enjoyed the tilt feature on the Cintiq so I bought the XP-Pen Deco Mini7 to see if it’s good like the monitor.
When I started dabbling into digital art I thought I was never going to be able to use a simple non-screen tablet. But after months of practice the thing has become second nature. Having a screen would probably make things faster, sure, but I certainly don't consider it a necessity nowadays.
In my opinion, a stylus makes my art worse whenever using it with my phone. I'd rather use my finger because it feels as if I have more control, and more space to work with. With the stylus, everything feels chunky lmao.

The bulk of my iPad kept me from using it often-I never realized how lazy I was until this pencil. The button and flick action (volume up and down, next and back) mean I can kick back without having to lean forward to make changes. I feel like a witch.Only 1 real complaint if it can even be called that, it comes with one background in like 6 colors. It's easy enough to find new ones... but why so stingy?
As a former mouse user artist for 7 years: -More accessible than a tablet -You don't have to worry about carrying an extra piece of hardware and just whip out the same mouse you'll use for your laptop -You just brute-force on learning a drawing technique that seems impossible to do using mouse -You get to flex that you drew with a mouse :p
@@Kogami yeah, agreed. I think it does take time and seems super counter intuitive and i guess part of it is, but if thats all you have? Its well worth learning the techniques cause it is so funny to see peoples disbelief when you say that the giant picture of goku in a bob ross painting you did was done in MS Paint with a mouse with a trackball.
@@JoanneGrr Can't say for sure, but I got a kamvas 16 pro last December and it's still as good as new a full 8-ish months later. I think the cheaper tablet brands are catching up in build and quality (in the case of huion, if not already -- though I haven't tried cintiqs so idk) and mine seems durable enough to last me some decent amount of time as long as I take proper care for it
i'm sure these tips work for most people but personally my first tablet was an intuos medium and i didn't have a good experience. not seeing where my hand was going made drawing super hard and i never got used to it. and it actually gave me MORE back and neck pains. my drawings were so much worse in that intuos than in my sketchbook, so it did actually affect the quality of the art. i had to stop using it and buy a new one, so i wasted my money there. i saved my money and got a huion gt 191 and drawing there is comfortable and easy. years later i got an ipad 6 and the drawing experience is the best i've had so far. so my advice would be to listen to these tips but also give it a few tries before buying. the shop i bought my huion in let me go and try it first so i bought it knowing it wasn't going to be like with the intuos. non-screen tablets are great but they're not for everyone.

Can i ask why ipad 6 drawing experience is better than huion gt191? I mean, huion has larger screen, so more space to draw. And also you have more freedom with the drawing software, is procreate better than photoshop/clip studio paint/paint tool sai?
@@kaori681 not having to be stuck at my desk allowed me to draw more comfortably and for longer, and made my drawings better. but maybe that's just cause my back is a mess. and also it just feels more natural? maybe it's the shape of the apple pencil, i don't know.
Tools matter immensely - since I got my iPad I’ve been drawing 100x more (compared to pen and paper) I can do all these crazy technical things, blur, gradient map, clipping mask, etc. etc. it makes a HUGE difference
I think he meant that you don't need too much tools or too expensive one's Because cheap one's can do the job great too and you just say the difference between drawing on paper and drawing digitally Drawing digitally is not the same feeling at all, you have less things to think about And it helps a lot By tools he meant having a big and expensive screened tablet that is made for drawing only and has like 12 buttons on the side, a tablet works just fine...
@@novink6620 Procreate is good for sketches or drawings for fun, but I can only recommend Artstudio Pro and Clip Studio. Perhaps both, since CSP lacks layer effects. The reason is not only that Procreate lacks many important features, but also that it has a pretty bad brush engine, poor anti-aliasing, limited canvas size/low number of layers and very poor transformation tools that quickly turn your drawing into a blurry mess.
@@xelly1299 I personally love Procreate but I agree w/ the blurring if I mess with my work too much (resizing, turning on the bias, etc.). I wish it had vector capabilities, then it would be near perfect for me.
For me, having a display tablet was a dream ever since I heard that these things existed. Once I finally got my hands on one, I didn't really like it. I got a cheap pen tablet for christmas about 12 years ago and I used it for about 8 years. It took some getting used to it (about an hour or so. For me it was not as bad as you might think) and it worked just fine. Then I upgrated to a display tablet (a Huion Kamvas 20). I was super excited and used it a lot in the beginning. But the more I used it, the more I recognised that I didn't like it as much as I hoped. I felt like I couldn't see what I was doing because my hand was in the way and my eyes got really tired quickly because the screen was closer to my face. So I caught myself looking at my main monitor more than on the display tablet. Besides I had to rearrange my desk everytime I wanted to use the tablet, because it was too big to be put on my desk in a drawing position permanently. That got annoying really quickly. I sold it in July (after having it for 3 1/2 years) because I got the feeling that I wasn't using it as much as I should for what I paid for it. I got myself a pen tablet in exchange and I'm way happier with it. So, having a display tablet may sound like the greatest thing ever, but it might not be the best solution for you and your workflow.
same, and the ergonomics topic hits really close to home. I see myself with curved spine and neck all the time when drawing with a display tablet. I'm past 30 and ergonomics plays a big role 😅

Growing up purely drawing on paper, finally getting a screen tablet was life changing. I don't think I'd ever go back to my regular tablet except to maybe play Osu once and awhile. I found using the non-screen tablet frustrating. As I rely on the feeling my pencil makes on paper, to get the lines I want. Having such a huge disconnect from what I was drawing to where my hand was placed, pretty much de-leveled my art skill by 10 years. It's still pretty good if you spend a good year or two practicing with it. But not having 1 to 1 visual information is a HUGE downside.
In my opinion, as someone who used to draw traditional, screen drawing is so much easier and feels more natural. For me, drawing this way is so much helpful since is similar to my traditional art and I can get used to it faster. I know the prices are HUGE but they're worth it if u know what u want and follow lots of reviews; However, there's different companies with better/decent tablets out there, if you're on a budget. Not anyone can buy an Ipad air/pro or a wacom, sadly this are the most popular selections in this area (sometimes is not about the details and specifications, is more like sponsorship and companies logos) I think is impressive if you can draw on those type of non-screen tablets but in my point of view I can't 😭 Is just feels off for me, also I have a bad relationship between eye-hand coordination.
It's not just getting used to, I've been drawing on a screenless tablet for a year now, drawing on paper is still much faster and natural to me, especially since I draw with a heavy emphasis on line art, I doubt I will ever be time efficient on screenless. So no worries it's not only about getting used to it. Some styles of drawing are just at a huge disadvantage if you're using screenless. The 2 things I think are doable decently on screenless tab are digital painting esp the more expressive one and 3d modeling.
I can't draw on a non screen tablet too, it just takes a long time even if i do and it drives me crazy sometimes, i drew alot on my fone before and apparently i prefer my fone than the tablet, my job demands faster work to be done.
As a traditional and digital artist, I completely agree with you. I have tried drawing on a none-screen tablet before and I felt very uncomfortable doing so. Plus my coordinations are so bad, I'd stick with screen tablets 😅

@@Stargaze79 regular paper art/animation is done on drafting tables and theyre usually higher than a regular desk to reduce the lean and angles. A screen angled at a normal desk still requires you to lean down. The neck gets this sort of carpal tunnel issue. Whatever you do, just try to prevent it for as long as possible.
@@Stargaze79 It's typical to have a monitor on a stand on your desk. which means your back is straight and your natural eye level is directly into your monitor. Simple tablets can be used with these, while if a visual tablet is used, you are either sacrificing your back posture or your wrists/arm posture.
@@Stargaze79 Agree with the posture aspect....there is no difference...BUT the damage that bright light from the display can play on your eyes after a few years to me is the BIG difference.
Having been doing traditional art for years, the disconnect you feel with the regular non-display tablet is too much to get used to. Getting a Huron Kamas pro 13 when it was on sale for like 200 was one of the best investments I've ever made.
This is the debate in my head all the time. Always want to switch to digital art. Always regret getting a tablet bc I feel so disconnected when I sketch. Painting is kind of okay, but sketching feels so out of control. But I've been scared to put money in a pen display and find out I also dislike it.
@@sennnia Same, every time I draw traditionally I feel demotivated to go back to my drawing tablet to digitize my sketch. And don't get me started on the lineart, I've had to comepletely throw out line art digitally as the lines are never the way I want them. I can't move the digital canvas around the same way I can my sketch pad to get the perfect lines, it's frustrating, as I look at my tradtional art and even stuff I've made on my phone only to see much better quality than I produce with the tablet. I want to try a screen tablet, I believe I can tilt the canvas how I want with my hands that way, but I know I don't have a lot of money to take a risk on one. So I'm stuck in a limbo, do I try to make some tradtional commissions in hopes people will buy then and I can maybe cover the cost of a $200 one. Or do I bite the bullet and keep making art I know isn't as good as what I can do on paper.

I think I want to get one of those, either the Artist 12 Pro or the 13.3 Pro. I'm watching reviews that compare them right now. I can pay $200 if I think it'll last, cause then I can complete digital commisions to make up for the cost.
@@sennnia Hey, I picked up the Artist 13 Pro, got the holiday edition for $215 with a coupon. I think the extra space is worth the $15 as it's closer in size to sketch books I actually use, it comes with an 18 month warranty so if anything goes wrong I can request a new one.
I'm torn on this. I just started doing digital drawing daily a few months ago, using a Wacom Bamboo that I picked up at Goodwill like 5 years ago (and never used). Thing works great. Just recently bought a Samsung S6 Tab (as a 3rd monitor for PC), and man, it's really great being able to look at where I'm drawing, especially since I can use keyboard shortcuts while I'm using the tablet+Krita.
well, you can take your tablet from your office to your home, a lot of people work with their own tablets in their offices and they go back home with the tablet to continue the work in their home....
Still using my 15 year old Intuos 3. I would still use my Graphire 1 tablet, which is pushing up on 20 years, but the drivers not working with Windows 10.
Also still using my Intuos 3, that I bought 13 years ago ^^ but unfortunately it's acting up a little now >< Sometimes it doesn't recognize when I turn around the pencle to use the eraser and such things... I'm actually not quite sure if it's the tablet or sth else...
@@raisavaz well no, the problem is Wacom not updating their drivers to work with Windows 10. Windows 10 is actually remarkably good at working with old drivers, unlike previous iterations of Windows, however it doesn't want to jive with the Graphire.
This is why I love your content!! It's good to remind people that it comes down to skill and not tech. I actually love reccomending lower tablets for people for these exact reasons. I use an ipad and a cintiq, and while i love them, the posture problems suck. I'm actually considering reverting back to my bamboo for a while to see if that helps my back more.
I’ve saved a lot of $$$ over the years by resisting the unnecessary ‘upgrade’ bandwagon. Money which I instead put into a hydraulic lift work desk so I can shift between sitting & standing to work. Best tool ever. Back & wrists don’t suffer nearly as much.
Solutions to some reasons. 1. Raise the device, literally putting it on a semi-decent monitor arm makes usage of the device immensely more ergonomic 2. Look secondhand, quite simply look secondhand, wacom isn't the be all end all of tablets and some huion/xppen displays cam go relatively cheap comparatively. 3. Get a smaller tablet? If you're using something in a portable setup it makes no difference if its the exact same size as your laptop screen and isn't even a real reason. 4. This applies to screenless tabs too, not every tablet is gonna come out perfect from the factory and so regardless of "this person has used this screenless for years" there's also someone who's used their display tablet for equal amounts of time and may have even had more dud screenless than screened tablets. 5. Another non-reason but also inherently wrong, someone's skill drawing traditionally doesn't always translate into someone drawing well digitally, of course it can take some learning but I guarantee you, if it doesn't click within the space of a week or two, you're better off getting SOME SORT of screen.
Tools absolutely matter, don’t spread that misconception. However, it’s your preference that matters most. Having owned an Intuos Wacom, and switching to a screen based Huion Kamvas 13, I can absolutely say with certainty that the Ability to see what I’m doing under my brush EXPONENTIALLY increased my quality of life. It probably has something to do with ADHD, but even drawing on paper was more preferable than a screenless tablet. That being said, screenless wasn’t that bad. I could have kept using my Intuos, but I just happened to come across enough money to buy a Kamvas. And let me tell you right now, while I’m enjoying the Kamvas more than the Intuos, it did NOT make me a better artist. I did not pay $250 to suddenly become great at drawing. Just go with your gut, and never underestimate what you have My favorite quote was something like “A good sculptor prefers a good chisel, a great sculptor can make any chisel great.”
I got a simple wacom pen tablet and while it’s fun, i have so much better line quality on paper because I don’t have the disconnect between where my pen is and where i look. My hand eye coordination has always left something to be desired. I caved and ordered a kamvas too
This is the right response to this video. While he has plenty of experience in his field, Brad misses the point that some types of art do actually benefit from direct screen input w a pen. I’m thinking specifically of animation. Honestly, your work WILL be better with a Cintiq than a Wacom tablet, both in accuracy/quality and productivity. One size does not always fit all.
For me, 30 years working and drawing all day, 7 days a week, is my choice. More precise, no latency, no parallax, nothing. All my tablets (3 Wacoms in 30 years) were drawing tablets like this one. And I work on advertising, so I have to be fast. Nothing fast than this ones. Thanks Brad!
@@erin9868 It aint a cintiq but i have a bamboo from wacom that was flung through the room and abused for osu! a lot. It still works as if it was new. Generally if something like hardwire like this dies within 5 years it's honestly either a hardware fault in the production which can be proven and replaced or user error.
i have always had a simple drawing tablet, and i couldnt see myself going over to a drawing monitor ever! :) - i like the way my hands isnt in the way of the drawing, and i can go in full zen mode on the screen in relaxed position without awkward hand movements on a monitor! :) and i have never had any problems with hand eye coordination, took literally 5 minutes it is really really easy to get used to!! :)

Honestly the biggest reason for me is that I can look clearly at where I will be drawing and not have a fist covering up any part of it. Once you get over the hand-eye coordination I honestly see it as an advantage.
I used to carry my 15” MacBook Pro, my Wacom Cintiq 12”, all the cables and bricks, plus an external drive in a backpack. Ended up being like 20 lbs. I was that guy at the food court designing for Hot Topic brands while my family ran around the mall lighting my credit cards on fire. Good times indeed. Fast forward to today and my kids are grown and out of the house and I’m chilling on my deck overlooking a forest with just my 12.9” 2020 iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. Total weight: a pound. You gotta start somewhere. And even though I’m fortunate enough to be in business I never stopped drawing and evolving with the tech. Brad’s right about familiarity. Being ten times more efficient is just the icing on the cake. And yes, if you still have a passion for it, your artwork improves as your tools do. Because you experiment more and that alone promotes growth. BTW my first digital design was on a Mac using MacPaint and a mouse in 1987 in screenprint class after school. It was my name in graffiti with a skull and crossbones in the middle.
@Sr. Boi Olla I actually caved in and bought a new tablet because I realized my super old Wacom has a more square shaped drawing area (because screens back then were more square) whereas my screen now is a much wider rectangle. I tested it out and drawing a 1 inch vertical and 1 inch horizontal line on my tablet resulted in a horizontal line that was almost twice as long as the vertical line on my drawing software!!! it was really screwing up my artwork because the horizontal and vertical axis were so imbalanced!
@Sr. Boi Olla Actually though, if you buy one of the really nice screen/display tablets it acts as its own monitor so it doesn't matter what your actual monitor is because the tablet doesn't work on it, it works on itself. That's what I bought so that in the future even if I want to buy a superwide gaming monitor, it won't affect my ability to use my tablet!
My pc struggles when I try to do a very simple cloth simulation in blender, making a 10 minutes work last like an hour... so I'd say tools often don't matter, because good machines could let you do more practice, faster and help you a lot to improve your skills
Thanks Bard, this is the video I needed to see today. I currently have a Huion 22 Pro, a Cintiq 16 pro, an iPad pro (lot's of "pro" stuff, apparently...) and honestly, I end up coming back to my intuos pro L every time, for all the reasons you mentioned in your video. But also because I create better art when I minimize what gets between it and me. I have been a professional concept artist for 7+ years, yet of course I have days in which I want to try new hardware, software or brushes, secretly hoping they will make me a better artist. But after spending money I don't have and time I should spend on actual hobbies, I always go back to the intuos and the reliable hard round brush on PS. Because at the end of the day, all that matters is your skill (developed with practice, not $$$) and having a comfortable working environment (and that tends to be the simpler, most minimalist possible for me). So yeah, I just wanted to reaffirm everything you said. I'm going to bookmark this video so I can watch it every time I forget this (which happens once every 2 weeks or so). My credit card says thank you too.
I got an intuous 4 in 2009 and it still works perfectly today. I've also spent a lot of time using just a mouse. Once you get used to the differences, it's really not a bad option for photo-manipulation type work.
For me, personally, I'm glad that I got my Wacom Intuos Medium *first*, and then just transitioned to a Wacom Cintiq 6. Even though I've had my Wacom Intuos Medium for 4 years now, I still notice a HUGE difference when drawing on a Cintiq instead. The difference is phenomenal, I'm able to make much more fluid strokes now that I know exactly where the living hell my damn pen is going to be. Sure, your hand obscures it a little bit, but honestly it's a nice exchange for much more fluid brush strokes. Plus, to me personally, a Wacom Intuos M is hell trying to animate on Adobe Animate, whereas a Cintiq makes it easier since Adobe Animate lacks a lot of stabilization. Overall, it really depends on what you're looking for, though I will agree that getting a Wacom first is a nice start, and then transitioning to drawing tablets if you really need more fluid brush strokes and such. Fair warning though, it does take a little time to get used to a drawing tablet. (Even if this is all satire, I still want to mention this, just in case people really are looking for something they want to use for digital art.) TL;DR It's honestly better to start small, that way you know you most definitely want to pursue digital art this way, and you're not wasting money. Then once you're ready and experienced, that'd be the best time to switch and try out something a little "new". Also Wacom is always my go-to trustworthy product. Yeah, it's a little more expensive, but it lasts way longer and the overall quality just seems so much nicer. (ffs, you don't even need a glove thing for the Wacom Cintiq 16!) Plus there's just too much wrong with Huion, smh.. (Look up Huion tablet reviews, some of them are really honest and truthful about the product, it's honestly outrageous how many faults and flaws there can be in Huion's stuff.)
While it didn't make me better, I'd say changing to a screen tablet did make me faster. Previously I was looking at my screen with my hand hovering over my undo button on my tablet, but now with the screen tablet I set up a Nintendo Switch Joycon to work with my drawing programs and I use that for inputs, rotating my canvas, etc and I think that's only really comfortable for me because the screen is right in front of me. I also use my tablet with a cheap monitor riser/stand that I got from Amazon so my posture isn't all that bad, honestly.
i wanna chime in with my two cents on this, some people will just hate drawing on a normal tablet and the screen tablet will actually improve their experience by 1000%. Example is my husband who thought drawing digitally just sucked (he used a normal tablet for 2 years) until he got a screen tablet. Literally everything changed for him. Also if you're a professional artist and you feel like your 2010 wacom bamboo is holding you back, don't be ashamed of buying new tools. Sometimes you need a specific thing and it's ok to get it if you can afford it.
@@alexket3581 Yeah, I was using an intuos pro tablet in small for the better part of a decade, I learned how to draw on tablets like that, it's how I started. That said, I could never go back.
@@PipoTechyon If you have bluetooth on your computer, or if you get a little bluetooth USB dongle, you can pair your joycon with your PC! After that you just use controller configuration software to set each of the buttons to whatever you want and voila. I personally use JoyToKey, and I have one of my trigger buttons set to toggle between one set of button configurations and another so I no longer need to use anything but that, it's amazing, and being able to rotate and zoom with an analog stick feels awesome.
I am a proud owner of a DRAW-A-TRON 8000. After two months of using it, I can definitely tell you all that I became a much better artist. Don't get scared of the price, it is worthed! Ps. I am in love with the design of the antenna. Delicious!
I wanna offer some more reasons. #6: Providing your own display. A lot of pen displays come with panels that do not have what you need for content creation. There are far too many compromises with all the providers. Wacom stifles on their panels, still providing displays with 72% of Adobe color gamut on a Cintiq 22. Meanwhile, Huion boasts “120% color gamut,” when there’s no such thing, they just crank up the saturation to give the illusion of wider color gamut. Having a simple drawing tablet and your own provided display allows you to use a display with the exact specifications you want, be it Adobe, DCI-P3, 4K resolution, etc. #7 You don’t have your arm or hand in the way of your drawing, what you see is entirely visible and allows you focus much more on your canvas. It’s more of- for sake of convenience.
I'm a traditional artist and I'm interested in expanding in to digital art. Mainly because I want the option to skip the use of a scanner. Your channel looks very informative.
I thought you were going to mention that not having your hand in the way can sometimes be very helpful. It's not a natural thing but that is what makes it a possible advantage. It's the one truly unique thing about a simple drawing tablet and it should be considered.
I obsessed over a cintiq for about a decade. I finally got one two weeks ago for 3d sculpting. I thought it was gonna be amazing. I spent a week with it and ended up returning it. It gave me neck pain and arm fatigue. I went back to my old, reliable Intuos 4 medium.
Honestly thanks for making me feel good about keeping my regular wacom Intuos 4 tablet. I was thinking of getting a huion. I tried a surface pro a while back and was just so disappointed with it, and disappointed in myself for wasting money and not using it. It was such a pain to set up, and to keep updating everything when I went to use it. The lag i would experience when drawing in adobe - the amount of time i had to spend researching to figure out why this or that wasn't working why I wanted it to, in the end.. it wasn't worth it to me. I think in the end what I really wanted was a laptop. I should have gotten myself the Surface Book instead. I was up-keeping three computers between my gaming computer, my work computer and now my drawing computer. It was like a second job. 900 bucks in the hole. It's a glorified paper weight at this point. I've been afraid to make the leap to anything else now. I've been eyeing so many drawing tablets thinking I should get this or that, and I found this video and I thought... ...what I have now.. is fine. I should just enjoy what I'm doing and stop thinking about technology.
Don't be stupid! Use an LCD graphics tablet but have your non-LCD graphics tablet as a backup and as a more portable device on the go... And selling any of the two is easy since the market for these 2nd-hand graphics tablets - is actually quite stable.
@@grain9640 Yeah, 2-3 years is the expected warranty for an LCD tablet these days... 🤔 But older Wacom Intuos4 A4 last for more than 10 years, but LCD tablets are way better so just get the cheapest durable one you can get 2nd hand and use it as much as you can before it falls apart, just make sure NOT to physically damage it much from regular use.
I'm still using my Intuos 4 from 2012 🐰 And I have been able to make really great, extremely detailed paintings with this tablet! I came to this video as the obligatory ritual to do before switching to a new device (I'm gonna get the Intuos Pro now, since my current tablet has a very little connectivity problem with the USB cable). For a long time, I thought a Cintiq was the next step, but now, graduated and working, I have get to know many artists who would rather still use these regular tablets specifically because of the neck problem. When you are 15 years old, probably you don't mind, but when you are 30-40, well, it does really matter! And it's really important to take care of one's health sooner than later anyway. So, in case there's someone out there still feeling bad for getting one of these, and not an expensive Cintiq or iPad, keep in mind all you need to make good art is simply a lot, a lot of practice, and a good attitude. These tablets do have a learning curve, but once you get used to it, you have a whole new world of opportunities out there in front of you. Promise, promise, all you need is a lot of desire to achieve the level of artistry you dream of. Good luck out there, can't wait to get my new Intuos! 💞💞💞

While I see your points, Nah, I'm still gonna buy a pen display. After years of using a graphics tablet, I think it'll work better for me. I need to see where my hand is going.
So, in that case my friend, I would insist you to buy an iPad . Cause if you'd buy a display tablet, you won't be able to do anything other than just drawing . Whereas, in case of an iPad, you would be able to do almost everything you want to . Also , they work for a very long time. I myself, am using an iPad mini since 6 - 7 years , and it still works the same way it did years back .
I'll probably get one of those tablet laptops for this sort of thing. Currently just using my mouse. It works fine and so does a normal tablet but I'd prefer drawing on my screen
@@enaika if you can find the 32gb model it, if I remember from 6 months ago that I looked into it, it was somewhere along the lines of 330€ or 430€ with the pen, the s6 lite sells for 320€ atm (but it costed 360€) with pen included. Both offer different features, drawing alone is better on the s6 lite because of the laminated display but app support is worse, I have mine paired with my pc so app support is alright
I've always been drawing with pen and paper, this year i made a switch to digital art, and i bought one of Wacom screenless tablets. Didn't really have money for ones with screen nor did i want to try them as i thought i wouldn't like it. So far, months later i have managed to adjust a lot, but i still find it as hard as i did the first day to actually draw anything from scratch with this tablet. I just look at blank, white screen and i realize i gotta go back to drawing thing on paper and then drawing over it, not being able to see my hand freezes me. And while this has been effective, it's also been bit time consuming and somehow it makes my brain tired as i keep telling myself i spent too much time working like that. I wanna get one of screen tablets, as i think it'd be easier to adjust, i wanna go back to that feel of drawing like i am on paper, as only in that way i can relax, let my mind wander, and only then i feel content enough to come up with new things. Gonna try to find one them and buy it eventually.
yup same, i have very bad hand-eye coordination so drawing on a screen less tablet is hard at best and painful at worst (clenching muscles to be more precise, got carpal tunnel because of it) anf honestly i was saved when a friend sent me an Ipad to draw on, even though it's nowhere as good as drawing on a computer it's still more comfortable
Something I’ve realized with cheaper brand tablets (Huion, XP-Pen, etc.) is that they aren’t built to last. They make good first impressions, last good for two-three years until people replace them because a game-breaking problem occurs or it already has several problems. Also, they pump out new models constantly so it’s an inevitability that your tablet will be put of service once it breaks down. My cousin has an Intuos M tablet that has been sitting on a shelf for a full year (sad stuff, I know) and it works as the day she got it. Meanwhile, my tablet that I bought for $38 now has problems with its pen (battery cover is kinda broken)
Nah, disagree entirely with the "tools dont matter" sentiment. Having used a wacom tablet, a 24" wacom drawing monitor at college, and a 13" Huion pro kamvas drawing monitor at home... the tools absolutely matter. If that weren't true, everyone would be using a mouse. Now maybe I just have really really bad hand-eye coordination... but drawing on the screen is 10x easier at least. Feels way more natural and comfortable to me. Even if you are right about the posture. But again, getting up every hour and moving your arm and wrist muscles, your back muscles, will go a long way anyway. I will say that in my experience, hardware may matter but its the software that doesn't. I always see comments asking "what brushes does this artist use" or "what art program". It honestly doesn't matter. I have been using Krita, a free art program with pretty much every tool and setting that Photoshop has. Everything you need. And I have only been using brush presets. Im sure you can make your own brushes but I feel its not necessary.
THIS! I used a Wacom pro 16 or something through all of college and ever since doing art is like having no hands. After using a cintiqu for so long I can no longer draw using any other digital medium simply because they are so much better than mice and no-screen pen tablets.
I feels that slightly software setting does help Like i dont know that i need firmer brush setting to make my ol plain lineart more natural and alive, lol Since i rarely press the pen, so im always use the softest setting, lol Heck i even can make my 2B pencil looks as thin as HB, lol
I bought an Intuos Art 5-6 years ago, and it's working just as well as the day I bought it. Even tough I have a big pen display from Huion now, I still use it to make art when traveling. And I can really second the part about the pose. I feel it a lot more in my shoulder or back when working with the Pen Display, as my arms need to move more; whereas on my intuos I basically had everything in a small space right in front of me and barely had to raise my fingers to reach any key combination I could need.
I know this video is 3 years old now, but I watched it week ago and finally decided for simple One by Wacom tablet. Hey, people.. This is the best thing ever 😃🤩🤩 Seriously. It's great. And btw I don't have any problems with hand-eye coordination either! So, yeah for poor students as me, I would say.. You don't really need expensive tablet for start. Even a simple pen tablet can do miracles ❤!
@@draco9566 You probably won't need a large tablet size for osu. In all likeliness, you won't be using full tablet area when playing osu anyways so size doesn't really matter. If you think you'll have a pen grip that is high up on the pen and you will be using a lot of large wrist motion and arm then large might be good, but if you think you're going to use mostly finger and some wrist then just get a small one. If you think you might draw, then maybe a larger one would actually be better, but I wouldn't know since I don't draw. My drawings seriously looks like a 4 year old's. Just remember, it's all up to PREFERENCE. Sorry for getting back to you late. By no means am I an authority to say anything (after all, I'm no professional. I'm not even that great. I'm still a 6 digit.) so take what I say with whatever it may mean to you.
Your videos are freaking amazing! I stumbled here when trying to decide what iPad to get, yet now I’ve found myself watching through so many of your videos! Your style and editing is so enthusiastic and engaging, but also extremely informative! Interestingly, I’ve also been thinking about this topic for a while! Even though I just got myself an iPad (and reluctantly have to admit it’s really really good... curse you Apple....) I still feel that my Wacom Intuos is more than enough for most things, and I kinda just really like it with how sturdy it is, and at a fraction of the cost. I think creatives in general feel like the gear has a bigger impact sometimes, especially when we’re still at the early stages, but we eventually figure it out. Doesn’t mean nice gear is bad of course! You’ll have to fight me for my iPad....
I'm a student and I bought the Wacom One tablet for fun , but I have grown accustomed to making digital notes on it as well as make beautiful reports/assignments
Completely agree! So far I've been using my Huion New 1060 Plus tablet and its lasted me at least two years, although I only began taking drawing on it seriously in the last seven months or so. No breakdowns and smooth sailing so far, and building hand eye coordination isn't as tough as it seems. If you're wondering where to start, invest in one of these small graphic tablets and figure out what you desire in regards to your own workflow.
I would love to switch over to a display tablet, but 2 additional reasons why I still wanna stick with my bamboo fun / intuos 4: 6 - No cable chaos (just one good ol USB connection) 7 - No need for extra power (seems display tablets need extra power supply, which is understandable since they're basically monitors. RIP full slotted multi sockets) And basically everything what Skitamine already mentioned below.
Totally agree! Now using the small pre-owned wacom board. Before, i have sold the Huion Kamvas 16. One of the reasons was it eats a lot of resources, so the computer was turning off each time of use of the monitor. If i had it now, guess it would work well, on the new computer, but i don't really care anymore about the screen, main parameter is mobility. Ipad is good tho, but the software there... meh...(sadly, old ipad started to 'fly out' of the large projects in RA), so i guess the wacom intuos draw was a good small useful decision to get access to computer back.

Really, the main reasons I want a screen to draw on is because I recently went to back good ol' pencil and paper and felt like I had more control over what I was doing. While I have gotten used to my pen tab over the two years I've had it, it still feels a little off at times. I like it when the lines I'm drawing are actually coming *from* the pen/pencil.
Update: Got my hands on the XP-Pen 15.6 Pro a few months ago. Come to realize that a display tablet is exactly what I wanted. I'm loving this thing to bits!

Katsudesu tiktok I don’t really know what you mean but everything depends on the posture you have or what angle you look at the screen, the calibration can be perfect when you are drawing completely straight but if you move your posture just a little it can effect the screen, so i always recalibrate it every time i change position, I can’t tell how many shots you have to take since I don’t know your preferences lmao, but I usually prefer a perfect calibration so i always spend 30 minutes a day trying to make it work

I know someone who draws (and even animates) using only a mouse. You can do anything you put your mind to.
The disconnect between drawing on one surface and seeing it on another surface is the reason pen displays are much better for me. For other artists, this might not bother them. But seeing the ink appear right beneath my pen onto a pen display was a complete game changer for me and I wouldn't go back to a basic tablet if you paid me to. Spent years using a tablet and never felt as connected to my digital art as I do with a pen display

I've been using non screen tablets since like 2016 (tho stopped drawing too much in 2017-mid2018). And yeah i kinda feel that limitation, as much as my drawing skills have grown, i just can't get that much control in the lines and i feel like a screen tablet would help so much. I'm preparing myself to buy one soon and hopefully it goes well
One reason to get a pen tablet display : speeeeeed! I’ve been coloring for DC & Marvel for years, and one thing that matters to me the most when switching to a pen tablet display thingy is how fast I can get the brush stroke that I wanted. I worked on a pen tablet for a very long time, and I found out that my eye hand coordination is suck. For those like me, working directly on screen is a blessing. My speed when coloring a page is at least twice as fast compared when I was using a pen tablet. But hey, to each their own!

I have a Cintiq pro 16 and most of the time use it with the screen turned off because otherwise my neck and my hand start to hurt. I only use the screen for inking.
I also have a cintiq pro from last year, its way too expensive for what it is. Not worth it for me at least, but glad that my job bought me one. Still end up using my thinkpad tablet x1 way more than the cintiq
I had an artist friend who I tried to help once.
I told him how he could protect the screen on his new expensive drawing monitor with clear vinyl.
He said he didn't need to.
A few years later he's complaining that his monitor is all scratched up and how it will cost so much money to replace it.

Pen tablet is still better. I used mine for years. Still using it although I bought cintiq pro 1 year back. Never using cintiq though, due to the viewing angle (posture). Viewing monitor with pen tablet is better for neck.

I've had my Cintiq 22HD for years. Still works great.
Thing is, I bought it BEFORE I learned to draw; I didn't want any excuses. While it gave me confidence in drawing as a whole, it did not make me a good artist.
Even after spending $2,000 on a Cintiq, I had to put in time to learn. The best and worst thing about digital art is that you can CTRL+Z every mistake as if it never happened. This makes you focus too much on corrections rather than pushing through it and continuing to draw -- which is what you want to learn.
In the end, I forced myself to live with my mistakes by keeping sketchbooks that I draw in ink so that I cannot erase. That's when I really began to improve.
$2k Cintiq vs. $100 Intuos tablet vs. $10 sketchbook and someone's stolen pen: while a screenless tablet vs. drawing display can bring about great arguments, the traditional sketchbook has a subtle power within it that cannot be reproduced by any tablet or display -- and I've used all three.
Don't disregard sketchbooks; they are the simplest and most elegant records of history that remind you of who you were, reflect who you are, and motivate you to be the artist you still want to be.

Come to think of it Maximilian is right. Our Laptop Touchpad is the World Smallest Graphic Drawing Tablet! Hold the Touchpad down with one hand and use the other to draw freely. So we're basically paying for a Bigger Touchpad than the one on our Laptop. Go figure.
Here’s some advice for doing this, I do it all the time, it helps and works better than going in the a pinky. You should hold a pencil and push your pointer finger farther than the point/end of the pencil. This way it feels like you’re holding a tool and feels more stable

Thanks Brad! A really sage advice video. In my 35 year career as a designer/illustrator, my digital input was solely through a Wacom tablet. I had one of the first ones they made and over the years went through 4 more. You get used to the parallax, eye hand coordination issue after just a couple hours. Cintiques (or the Huion Kamvas 22 pro I now have) are cool and all, but they've not been the wow factor I expected over a simple tablet. Your 5 points are right on target. Drawing monitors are a handful of tech and take up a lot of space (not to mention money). I recommend your videos to folks all the time. Thanks for the info and effort.

Same. A lot of other comments are complaining about the hand-eye coordination but my sis and me never had any issues. While she does have a Cintiq now, when I used it, I didn't notice much of a difference tbh. I actually like the texture of my Bamboo tablet more. It's closer to drawing on paper. It's like Brad said, just having a new piece of fancy equipment isn't going to improve your art much.
This is some solid advice that might have prevented me from making an expensive mistake. I am not a digital artist. I don’t have that talent. I am more of a digital mechanical designer. I design and make blueprints but not on a draftsman level.

Get a Deco Pro (the "Large" model. 130 bucks only), still. Much bigger active area, is so much better in many ways than a Bamboo. You will notice it in your workflow. But no need to get a display tablet for those 400 - 600 euros.

Each to their own. I had been using a non-screen tablet for around 10 years and never got used to the feeling of disconnect. Took me a long time to accept they just weren't for me and I regret not going to a screen tablet sooner. We all have our methods and comforts. I don't think one is better than the other. Just focus on what works best for you, simple as that.
Preference. I feel actually the same way. Coming from traditional to a pen tablet is way too jarring and I honestly feel a screen tablet would work better for me. I have a better time drawing with a stylus on my phone than on my intuos
I completely agree, I've drawn on an intuos for a few months already and sometimes I can't even lineart, I sometimes switch to traditional where its much easier because I can move it around. I'm sometimes thinking of switching to my phone & pen nowadays.

As someone who is now looking into getting a Pen Display, because I feel like the bigger size and it not being flat on the desk will be better for my wrist. I've had my Wacom Bamboo for 11 years, and scratches and dings aside, it still works just as well as it ever has.
I know it won't make my art better, but I do feel like drawing right on the screen will help me draw faster. Which is also really important.

As someone who has owned a Cintiq 13" HD for some years now, I can say that having a tablet screen can be a bit overrated. I actually ended up using my Cintiq more as a regular Intuos because of the bad posture problem giving me some nasty neck pain and because my main screen has way more screen space for me to check my artwork with. Once you have learned how to draw without a screen you really don't need one to work, so the novelty of having one really wore off for me over time.
I only really think that getting a screen tablet is worth it if you have access to a solid work desk and a larger screen Cintiq, but that would mean spending some serious cash for something that could be done with a regular no screen tablet and a gaming screen. It's actually cheaper to get a great gaming screen with proper colour management and 1440p - 4k resolution as well as a no screen tablet than spending it on a single Cintiq that has similar specs as the gaming screen. My next purchase is actually going to be an Intuos Pro and a G7 (32" with HDR support) or G9 Odyssey screen (49" with excellent HDR support) depending on my budget, which will still be cheaper than buying a 24" Cintiq Pro (not even counting the desk needed to mount it).
So yeah. I don't regret buying my Cintiq, but unless I have some serious cash to burn I am not planning on getting another one any time soon. Non-Cintiq Wacom tablets are good enough.
Do you still think the same way, and did you buy the Intuos Pro? I tried drawing with the screen and Wacom stylus on my old Thinkpad, but the screen space was too cramped and uncomfortable. I came to a similar conclusion as you did and bought myself a regular pen tablet so I can see my screen better.
@@zinput I bought the G9 Odyssey and Wacom Intuos Pro, yes. I do not regret it for one second. I still am going to use my Cintiq 13" since I bought the Intuos Pro primarily to work on it at school (didn't want to carry it back and forth every week so I could work at home or at school). The new screen is absolutely fantastic for painting thanks to how good the colour management is out of the box and it is so nice being able to paint with HDR enabled.
The Intuos Pro is also very solid. Pretty happy that I got myself the large model, since it allows for larger sweeping brush strokes. It's a very good tablet.
Same here. My Cintiq 13”HD started leaking some sort of weird oil that I couldn’t identify so I thought that was a good oportunity to step down and go back to my old buddy Intuos Pen Small. Don’t regret a bit and it’s been so much better for my back health! I really enjoyed the tilt feature on the Cintiq so I bought the XP-Pen Deco Mini7 to see if it’s good like the monitor.
I agree I still use my wacom intuos 3, thing is a workhorse.
When I started dabbling into digital art I thought I was never going to be able to use a simple non-screen tablet. But after months of practice the thing has become second nature. Having a screen would probably make things faster, sure, but I certainly don't consider it a necessity nowadays.

In my opinion, a stylus makes my art worse whenever using it with my phone. I'd rather use my finger because it feels as if I have more control, and more space to work with. With the stylus, everything feels chunky lmao.

There were so many mixed reviews I was a little scared to buy this.-I work 10 hour shifts ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxAxiUS5CgVC3j8FwNOHt037zhsquGQpXv and I can watch lectures, jam out, and read articles all day and only use 30-40% of the battery.-The screen is beautiful and the touch is accurate-The camera is on the edge, making this perfect for Zoom calls (I also have the keyboard with the back piece)-It's super thin. The bulk of my iPad kept me from using it often-I never realized how lazy I was until this pencil. The button and flick action (volume up and down, next and back) mean I can kick back without having to lean forward to make changes. I feel like a witch.Only 1 real complaint if it can even be called that, it comes with one background in like 6 colors. It's easy enough to find new ones... but why so stingy?

-More accessible than a tablet
-You don't have to worry about carrying an extra piece of hardware and just whip out the same mouse you'll use for your laptop
-You just brute-force on learning a drawing technique that seems impossible to do using mouse

Its well worth learning the techniques cause it is so funny to see peoples disbelief when you say that the giant picture of goku in a bob ross painting you did was done in MS Paint with a mouse with a trackball.

@@JoanneGrr Can't say for sure, but I got a kamvas 16 pro last December and it's still as good as new a full 8-ish months later. I think the cheaper tablet brands are catching up in build and quality (in the case of huion, if not already -- though I haven't tried cintiqs so idk) and mine seems durable enough to last me some decent amount of time as long as I take proper care for it
i'm sure these tips work for most people but personally my first tablet was an intuos medium and i didn't have a good experience. not seeing where my hand was going made drawing super hard and i never got used to it. and it actually gave me MORE back and neck pains.
my drawings were so much worse in that intuos than in my sketchbook, so it did actually affect the quality of the art.
i had to stop using it and buy a new one, so i wasted my money there.
i saved my money and got a huion gt 191 and drawing there is comfortable and easy. years later i got an ipad 6 and the drawing experience is the best i've had so far.
so my advice would be to listen to these tips but also give it a few tries before buying. the shop i bought my huion in let me go and try it first so i bought it knowing it wasn't going to be like with the intuos.
non-screen tablets are great but they're not for everyone.

Tools matter immensely - since I got my iPad I’ve been drawing 100x more (compared to pen and paper) I can do all these crazy technical things, blur, gradient map, clipping mask, etc. etc. it makes a HUGE difference

@@novink6620 Procreate is good for sketches or drawings for fun, but I can only recommend Artstudio Pro and Clip Studio. Perhaps both, since CSP lacks layer effects.
The reason is not only that Procreate lacks many important features, but also that it has a pretty bad brush engine, poor anti-aliasing, limited canvas size/low number of layers and very poor transformation tools that quickly turn your drawing into a blurry mess.
@@xelly1299 I personally love Procreate but I agree w/ the blurring if I mess with my work too much (resizing, turning on the bias, etc.). I wish it had vector capabilities, then it would be near perfect for me.
For me, having a display tablet was a dream ever since I heard that these things existed. Once I finally got my hands on one, I didn't really like it.
I got a cheap pen tablet for christmas about 12 years ago and I used it for about 8 years. It took some getting used to it (about an hour or so. For me it was not as bad as you might think) and it worked just fine. Then I upgrated to a display tablet (a Huion Kamvas 20). I was super excited and used it a lot in the beginning. But the more I used it, the more I recognised that I didn't like it as much as I hoped. I felt like I couldn't see what I was doing because my hand was in the way and my eyes got really tired quickly because the screen was closer to my face. So I caught myself looking at my main monitor more than on the display tablet. Besides I had to rearrange my desk everytime I wanted to use the tablet, because it was too big to be put on my desk in a drawing position permanently. That got annoying really quickly.
I sold it in July (after having it for 3 1/2 years) because I got the feeling that I wasn't using it as much as I should for what I paid for it. I got myself a pen tablet in exchange and I'm way happier with it. So, having a display tablet may sound like the greatest thing ever, but it might not be the best solution for you and your workflow.

Growing up purely drawing on paper, finally getting a screen tablet was life changing. I don't think I'd ever go back to my regular tablet except to maybe play Osu once and awhile. I found using the non-screen tablet frustrating. As I rely on the feeling my pencil makes on paper, to get the lines I want. Having such a huge disconnect from what I was drawing to where my hand was placed, pretty much de-leveled my art skill by 10 years. It's still pretty good if you spend a good year or two practicing with it. But not having 1 to 1 visual information is a HUGE downside.

In my opinion, as someone who used to draw traditional, screen drawing is so much easier and feels more natural. For me, drawing this way is so much helpful since is similar to my traditional art and I can get used to it faster. I know the prices are HUGE but they're worth it if u know what u want and follow lots of reviews; However, there's different companies with better/decent tablets out there, if you're on a budget. Not anyone can buy an Ipad air/pro or a wacom, sadly this are the most popular selections in this area (sometimes is not about the details and specifications, is more like sponsorship and companies logos) I think is impressive if you can draw on those type of non-screen tablets but in my point of view I can't 😭 Is just feels off for me, also I have a bad relationship between eye-hand coordination.
It's not just getting used to, I've been drawing on a screenless tablet for a year now, drawing on paper is still much faster and natural to me, especially since I draw with a heavy emphasis on line art, I doubt I will ever be time efficient on screenless. So no worries it's not only about getting used to it. Some styles of drawing are just at a huge disadvantage if you're using screenless. The 2 things I think are doable decently on screenless tab are digital painting esp the more expressive one and 3d modeling.
I can't draw on a non screen tablet too, it just takes a long time even if i do and it drives me crazy sometimes, i drew alot on my fone before and apparently i prefer my fone than the tablet, my job demands faster work to be done.
As a traditional and digital artist, I completely agree with you. I have tried drawing on a none-screen tablet before and I felt very uncomfortable doing so. Plus my coordinations are so bad, I'd stick with screen tablets 😅

It was a stupid point. I don't see the difference between drawing on a screen vs drawing on a piece of paper. The posture is basically the same.
@@Stargaze79 regular paper art/animation is done on drafting tables and theyre usually higher than a regular desk to reduce the lean and angles.
A screen angled at a normal desk still requires you to lean down.
The neck gets this sort of carpal tunnel issue.
Whatever you do, just try to prevent it for as long as possible.
@@Stargaze79 It's typical to have a monitor on a stand on your desk. which means your back is straight and your natural eye level is directly into your monitor. Simple tablets can be used with these, while if a visual tablet is used, you are either sacrificing your back posture or your wrists/arm posture.

Having been doing traditional art for years, the disconnect you feel with the regular non-display tablet is too much to get used to. Getting a Huron Kamas pro 13 when it was on sale for like 200 was one of the best investments I've ever made.
This is the debate in my head all the time. Always want to switch to digital art. Always regret getting a tablet bc I feel so disconnected when I sketch. Painting is kind of okay, but sketching feels so out of control. But I've been scared to put money in a pen display and find out I also dislike it.
@@sennnia Same, every time I draw traditionally I feel demotivated to go back to my drawing tablet to digitize my sketch. And don't get me started on the lineart, I've had to comepletely throw out line art digitally as the lines are never the way I want them. I can't move the digital canvas around the same way I can my sketch pad to get the perfect lines, it's frustrating, as I look at my tradtional art and even stuff I've made on my phone only to see much better quality than I produce with the tablet. I want to try a screen tablet, I believe I can tilt the canvas how I want with my hands that way, but I know I don't have a lot of money to take a risk on one. So I'm stuck in a limbo, do I try to make some tradtional commissions in hopes people will buy then and I can maybe cover the cost of a $200 one. Or do I bite the bullet and keep making art I know isn't as good as what I can do on paper.

I think I want to get one of those, either the Artist 12 Pro or the 13.3 Pro. I'm watching reviews that compare them right now. @@sennnia Hey, I picked up the Artist 13 Pro, got the holiday edition for $215 with a coupon. I think the extra space is worth the $15 as it's closer in size to sketch books I actually use, it comes with an 18 month warranty so if anything goes wrong I can request a new one.
I'm torn on this. I just started doing digital drawing daily a few months ago, using a Wacom Bamboo that I picked up at Goodwill like 5 years ago (and never used). Thing works great. Just recently bought a Samsung S6 Tab (as a 3rd monitor for PC), and man, it's really great being able to look at where I'm drawing, especially since I can use keyboard shortcuts while I'm using the tablet+Krita.
The Bamboo is my go-to since 2012. It's a gem of a product.

Still using my 15 year old Intuos 3. I would still use my Graphire 1 tablet, which is pushing up on 20 years, but the drivers not working with Windows 10.

@@raisavaz well no, the problem is Wacom not updating their drivers to work with Windows 10. Windows 10 is actually remarkably good at working with old drivers, unlike previous iterations of Windows, however it doesn't want to jive with the Graphire.
This is why I love your content!! It's good to remind people that it comes down to skill and not tech. I actually love reccomending lower tablets for people for these exact reasons.
I use an ipad and a cintiq, and while i love them, the posture problems suck. I'm actually considering reverting back to my bamboo for a while to see if that helps my back more.

I’ve saved a lot of $$$ over the years by resisting the unnecessary ‘upgrade’ bandwagon. Money which I instead put into a hydraulic lift work desk so I can shift between sitting & standing to work. Best tool ever. Back & wrists don’t suffer nearly as much.
XP pen sells stands for their tablets, would highly recommend one if you are going to draw on an ipad.
Can I recommend a intruos pro? Mostly for the pen, the slightly thicker pen is way easier on the hand then the bamboo one.

Solutions to some reasons.
1. Raise the device, literally putting it on a semi-decent monitor arm makes usage of the device immensely more ergonomic
2. Look secondhand, quite simply look secondhand, wacom isn't the be all end all of tablets and some huion/xppen displays cam go relatively cheap comparatively.
3. Get a smaller tablet? If you're using something in a portable setup it makes no difference if its the exact same size as your laptop screen and isn't even a real reason.
4. This applies to screenless tabs too, not every tablet is gonna come out perfect from the factory and so regardless of "this person has used this screenless for years" there's also someone who's used their display tablet for equal amounts of time and may have even had more dud screenless than screened tablets.
5. Another non-reason but also inherently wrong, someone's skill drawing traditionally doesn't always translate into someone drawing well digitally, of course it can take some learning but I guarantee you, if it doesn't click within the space of a week or two, you're better off getting SOME SORT of screen.
Tools absolutely matter, don’t spread that misconception. However, it’s your preference that matters most. Having owned an Intuos Wacom, and switching to a screen based Huion Kamvas 13, I can absolutely say with certainty that the Ability to see what I’m doing under my brush EXPONENTIALLY increased my quality of life. It probably has something to do with ADHD, but even drawing on paper was more preferable than a screenless tablet.
That being said, screenless wasn’t that bad.
I could have kept using my Intuos, but I just happened to come across enough money to buy a Kamvas.
And let me tell you right now, while I’m enjoying the Kamvas more than the Intuos, it did NOT make me a better artist. I did not pay $250 to suddenly become great at drawing.
Just go with your gut, and never underestimate what you have

I got a simple wacom pen tablet and while it’s fun, i have so much better line quality on paper because I don’t have the disconnect between where my pen is and where i look.
My hand eye coordination has always left something to be desired.

This is the right response to this video. While he has plenty of experience in his field, Brad misses the point that some types of art do actually benefit from direct screen input w a pen. I’m thinking specifically of animation. Honestly, your work WILL be better with a Cintiq than a Wacom tablet, both in accuracy/quality and productivity. One size does not always fit all.
A great sculptor would have his own set of custom made and beautifully maintained tools though.

For me, 30 years working and drawing all day, 7 days a week, is my choice. More precise, no latency, no parallax, nothing. All my tablets (3 Wacoms in 30 years) were drawing tablets like this one. And I work on advertising, so I have to be fast. Nothing fast than this ones. Thanks Brad!

@@erin9868 It aint a cintiq but i have a bamboo from wacom that was flung through the room and abused for osu! a lot. It still works as if it was new. Generally if something like hardwire like this dies within 5 years it's honestly either a hardware fault in the production which can be proven and replaced or user error.
If it's still getting the job done, it's fine.
i have always had a simple drawing tablet, and i couldnt see myself going over to a drawing monitor ever! :) - i like the way my hands isnt in the way of the drawing, and i can go in full zen mode on the screen in relaxed position without awkward hand movements on a monitor! :) and i have never had any problems with hand eye coordination, took literally 5 minutes it is really really easy to get used to!! :)

Honestly the biggest reason for me is that I can look clearly at where I will be drawing and not have a fist covering up any part of it. Once you get over the hand-eye coordination I honestly see it as an advantage.
I used to carry my 15” MacBook Pro, my Wacom Cintiq 12”, all the cables and bricks, plus an external drive in a backpack. Ended up being like 20 lbs. I was that guy at the food court designing for Hot Topic brands while my family ran around the mall lighting my credit cards on fire. Good times indeed.
Fast forward to today and my kids are grown and out of the house and I’m chilling on my deck overlooking a forest with just my 12.9” 2020 iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. Total weight: a pound. You gotta start somewhere. And even though I’m fortunate enough to be in business I never stopped drawing and evolving with the tech. Brad’s right about familiarity. Being ten times more efficient is just the icing on the cake. And yes, if you still have a passion for it, your artwork improves as your tools do. Because you experiment more and that alone promotes growth.
BTW my first digital design was on a Mac using MacPaint and a mouse in 1987 in screenprint class after school. It was my name in graffiti with a skull and crossbones in the middle.

@Sr. Boi Olla I actually caved in and bought a new tablet because I realized my super old Wacom has a more square shaped drawing area (because screens back then were more square) whereas my screen now is a much wider rectangle. I tested it out and drawing a 1 inch vertical and 1 inch horizontal line on my tablet resulted in a horizontal line that was almost twice as long as the vertical line on my drawing software!!! it was really screwing up my artwork because the horizontal and vertical axis were so imbalanced!
@Sr. Boi Olla Actually though, if you buy one of the really nice screen/display tablets it acts as its own monitor so it doesn't matter what your actual monitor is because the tablet doesn't work on it, it works on itself. That's what I bought so that in the future even if I want to buy a superwide gaming monitor, it won't affect my ability to use my tablet!
My pc struggles when I try to do a very simple cloth simulation in blender, making a 10 minutes work last like an hour... so I'd say tools often don't matter, because good machines could let you do more practice, faster and help you a lot to improve your skills

Thanks Bard, this is the video I needed to see today. I currently have a Huion 22 Pro, a Cintiq 16 pro, an iPad pro (lot's of "pro" stuff, apparently...) and honestly, I end up coming back to my intuos pro L every time, for all the reasons you mentioned in your video. But also because I create better art when I minimize what gets between it and me.
I have been a professional concept artist for 7+ years, yet of course I have days in which I want to try new hardware, software or brushes, secretly hoping they will make me a better artist. But after spending money I don't have and time I should spend on actual hobbies, I always go back to the intuos and the reliable hard round brush on PS. Because at the end of the day, all that matters is your skill (developed with practice, not $$$) and having a comfortable working environment (and that tends to be the simpler, most minimalist possible for me).
So yeah, I just wanted to reaffirm everything you said. I'm going to bookmark this video so I can watch it every time I forget this (which happens once every 2 weeks or so). My credit card says thank you too.

I got an intuous 4 in 2009 and it still works perfectly today. I've also spent a lot of time using just a mouse. Once you get used to the differences, it's really not a bad option for photo-manipulation type work.
For me, personally, I'm glad that I got my Wacom Intuos Medium *first*, and then just transitioned to a Wacom Cintiq 6.
Even though I've had my Wacom Intuos Medium for 4 years now, I still notice a HUGE difference when drawing on a Cintiq instead.
The difference is phenomenal, I'm able to make much more fluid strokes now that I know exactly where the living hell my damn pen is going to be.
Sure, your hand obscures it a little bit, but honestly it's a nice exchange for much more fluid brush strokes.
Plus, to me personally, a Wacom Intuos M is hell trying to animate on Adobe Animate, whereas a Cintiq makes it easier since Adobe Animate lacks a lot of stabilization.
Overall, it really depends on what you're looking for, though I will agree that getting a Wacom first is a nice start, and then transitioning to drawing tablets if you really need more fluid brush strokes and such. Fair warning though, it does take a little time to get used to a drawing tablet.
(Even if this is all satire, I still want to mention this, just in case people really are looking for something they want to use for digital art.)
TL;DR It's honestly better to start small, that way you know you most definitely want to pursue digital art this way, and you're not wasting money.
Then once you're ready and experienced, that'd be the best time to switch and try out something a little "new".
Also Wacom is always my go-to trustworthy product.
Yeah, it's a little more expensive, but it lasts way longer and the overall quality just seems so much nicer. (ffs, you don't even need a glove thing for the Wacom Cintiq 16!)
Plus there's just too much wrong with Huion, smh..
(Look up Huion tablet reviews, some of them are really honest and truthful about the product, it's honestly outrageous how many faults and flaws there can be in Huion's stuff.)

While it didn't make me better, I'd say changing to a screen tablet did make me faster. Previously I was looking at my screen with my hand hovering over my undo button on my tablet, but now with the screen tablet I set up a Nintendo Switch Joycon to work with my drawing programs and I use that for inputs, rotating my canvas, etc and I think that's only really comfortable for me because the screen is right in front of me.
I also use my tablet with a cheap monitor riser/stand that I got from Amazon so my posture isn't all that bad, honestly.
i wanna chime in with my two cents on this, some people will just hate drawing on a normal tablet and the screen tablet will actually improve their experience by 1000%. Example is my husband who thought drawing digitally just sucked (he used a normal tablet for 2 years) until he got a screen tablet. Literally everything changed for him.
Also if you're a professional artist and you feel like your 2010 wacom bamboo is holding you back, don't be ashamed of buying new tools. Sometimes you need a specific thing and it's ok to get it if you can afford it.

Sheela May I please ask how you managed to use a joy-con as an input device because I genuinely need to know. Is it a driver of some sort???
@@PipoTechyon If you have bluetooth on your computer, or if you get a little bluetooth USB dongle, you can pair your joycon with your PC! After that you just use controller configuration software to set each of the buttons to whatever you want and voila. I personally use JoyToKey, and I have one of my trigger buttons set to toggle between one set of button configurations and another so I no longer need to use anything but that, it's amazing, and being able to rotate and zoom with an analog stick feels awesome.

I am a proud owner of a DRAW-A-TRON 8000. After two months of using it, I can definitely tell you all that I became a much better artist. Don't get scared of the price, it is worthed!

I wanna offer some more reasons.
#6: Providing your own display. A lot of pen displays come with panels that do not have what you need for content creation. There are far too many compromises with all the providers. Wacom stifles on their panels, still providing displays with 72% of Adobe color gamut on a Cintiq 22. Meanwhile, Huion boasts “120% color gamut,” when there’s no such thing, they just crank up the saturation to give the illusion of wider color gamut. Having a simple drawing tablet and your own provided display allows you to use a display with the exact specifications you want, be it Adobe, DCI-P3, 4K resolution, etc.
#7 You don’t have your arm or hand in the way of your drawing, what you see is entirely visible and allows you focus much more on your canvas. It’s more of- for sake of convenience.
#7 is hardly a problem bc classic paper drawing is the same, and I think everyone's used to that. (maybe not good, but is used to it)

I thought you were going to mention that not having your hand in the way can sometimes be very helpful. It's not a natural thing but that is what makes it a possible advantage. It's the one truly unique thing about a simple drawing tablet and it should be considered.

I obsessed over a cintiq for about a decade. I finally got one two weeks ago for 3d sculpting. I thought it was gonna be amazing. I spent a week with it and ended up returning it. It gave me neck pain and arm fatigue. I went back to my old, reliable Intuos 4 medium.
Might return my Cintq 16 too. It was great the first time I had it but since I have scoliosis, it hurts to draw. I'm planning to return it sometime.
Honestly thanks for making me feel good about keeping my regular wacom Intuos 4 tablet. I was thinking of getting a huion. I tried a surface pro a while back and was just so disappointed with it, and disappointed in myself for wasting money and not using it. It was such a pain to set up, and to keep updating everything when I went to use it. The lag i would experience when drawing in adobe - the amount of time i had to spend researching to figure out why this or that wasn't working why I wanted it to, in the end.. it wasn't worth it to me. I think in the end what I really wanted was a laptop. I should have gotten myself the Surface Book instead. I was up-keeping three computers between my gaming computer, my work computer and now my drawing computer. It was like a second job. 900 bucks in the hole. It's a glorified paper weight at this point. I've been afraid to make the leap to anything else now. I've been eyeing so many drawing tablets thinking I should get this or that, and I found this video and I thought... ...what I have now.. is fine. I should just enjoy what I'm doing and stop thinking about technology.
Don't be stupid! Use an LCD graphics tablet but have your non-LCD graphics tablet as a backup and as a more portable device on the go... And selling any of the two is easy since the market for these 2nd-hand graphics tablets - is actually quite stable.
I got a Huion kamvas, and took very good care of it, in fact I was almost absurdly protective-- and the hardware randomly failed within 2 years.

@@grain9640 Yeah, 2-3 years is the expected warranty for an LCD tablet these days... 🤔 But older Wacom Intuos4 A4 last for more than 10 years, but LCD tablets are way better so just get the cheapest durable one you can get 2nd hand and use it as much as you can before it falls apart, just make sure NOT to physically damage it much from regular use.
I'm still using my Intuos 4 from 2012 🐰 And I have been able to make really great, extremely detailed paintings with this tablet! I came to this video as the obligatory ritual to do before switching to a new device (I'm gonna get the Intuos Pro now, since my current tablet has a very little connectivity problem with the USB cable). For a long time, I thought a Cintiq was the next step, but now, graduated and working, I have get to know many artists who would rather still use these regular tablets specifically because of the neck problem. When you are 15 years old, probably you don't mind, but when you are 30-40, well, it does really matter! And it's really important to take care of one's health sooner than later anyway. So, in case there's someone out there still feeling bad for getting one of these, and not an expensive Cintiq or iPad, keep in mind all you need to make good art is simply a lot, a lot of practice, and a good attitude. These tablets do have a learning curve, but once you get used to it, you have a whole new world of opportunities out there in front of you. Promise, promise, all you need is a lot of desire to achieve the level of artistry you dream of. Good luck out there, can't wait to get my new Intuos! 💞💞💞

So, in that case my friend, I would insist you to buy an iPad . Cause if you'd buy a display tablet, you won't be able to do anything other than just drawing . Whereas, in case of an iPad, you would be able to do almost everything you want to . Also , they work for a very long time. I myself, am using an iPad mini since 6 - 7 years , and it still works the same way it did years back .
Apple products are insanely expensive, it's more affordable to buy pen display graphic tablet like kamvas 13 than iPad for many people.
I'll probably get one of those tablet laptops for this sort of thing. Currently just using my mouse. It works fine and so does a normal tablet but I'd prefer drawing on my screen

@@enaika if you can find the 32gb model it, if I remember from 6 months ago that I looked into it, it was somewhere along the lines of 330€ or 430€ with the pen, the s6 lite sells for 320€ atm (but it costed 360€) with pen included. Both offer different features, drawing alone is better on the s6 lite because of the laminated display but app support is worse, I have mine paired with my pc so app support is alright

I've always been drawing with pen and paper, this year i made a switch to digital art, and i bought one of Wacom screenless tablets. Didn't really have money for ones with screen nor did i want to try them as i thought i wouldn't like it.
So far, months later i have managed to adjust a lot, but i still find it as hard as i did the first day to actually draw anything from scratch with this tablet. I just look at blank, white screen and i realize i gotta go back to drawing thing on paper and then drawing over it, not being able to see my hand freezes me. And while this has been effective, it's also been bit time consuming and somehow it makes my brain tired as i keep telling myself i spent too much time working like that.
I wanna get one of screen tablets, as i think it'd be easier to adjust, i wanna go back to that feel of drawing like i am on paper, as only in that way i can relax, let my mind wander, and only then i feel content enough to come up with new things.
Gonna try to find one them and buy it eventually.
yup same, i have very bad hand-eye coordination so drawing on a screen less tablet is hard at best and painful at worst (clenching muscles to be more precise, got carpal tunnel because of it) anf honestly i was saved when a friend sent me an Ipad to draw on, even though it's nowhere as good as drawing on a computer it's still more comfortable
Something I’ve realized with cheaper brand tablets (Huion, XP-Pen, etc.) is that they aren’t built to last. They make good first impressions, last good for two-three years until people replace them because a game-breaking problem occurs or it already has several problems. Also, they pump out new models constantly so it’s an inevitability that your tablet will be put of service once it breaks down. My cousin has an Intuos M tablet that has been sitting on a shelf for a full year (sad stuff, I know) and it works as the day she got it. Meanwhile, my tablet that I bought for $38 now has problems with its pen (battery cover is kinda broken)
Nah, disagree entirely with the "tools dont matter" sentiment. Having used a wacom tablet, a 24" wacom drawing monitor at college, and a 13" Huion pro kamvas drawing monitor at home... the tools absolutely matter. If that weren't true, everyone would be using a mouse. Now maybe I just have really really bad hand-eye coordination... but drawing on the screen is 10x easier at least. Feels way more natural and comfortable to me. Even if you are right about the posture. But again, getting up every hour and moving your arm and wrist muscles, your back muscles, will go a long way anyway.
I will say that in my experience, hardware may matter but its the software that doesn't. I always see comments asking "what brushes does this artist use" or "what art program". It honestly doesn't matter. I have been using Krita, a free art program with pretty much every tool and setting that Photoshop has. Everything you need. And I have only been using brush presets. Im sure you can make your own brushes but I feel its not necessary.

THIS! I used a Wacom pro 16 or something through all of college and ever since doing art is like having no hands. After using a cintiqu for so long I can no longer draw using any other digital medium simply because they are so much better than mice and no-screen pen tablets.

I bought an Intuos Art 5-6 years ago, and it's working just as well as the day I bought it. Even tough I have a big pen display from Huion now, I still use it to make art when traveling.
And I can really second the part about the pose. I feel it a lot more in my shoulder or back when working with the Pen Display, as my arms need to move more; whereas on my intuos I basically had everything in a small space right in front of me and barely had to raise my fingers to reach any key combination I could need.

@@draco9566 You probably won't need a large tablet size for osu. In all likeliness, you won't be using full tablet area when playing osu anyways so size doesn't really matter. If you think you'll have a pen grip that is high up on the pen and you will be using a lot of large wrist motion and arm then large might be good, but if you think you're going to use mostly finger and some wrist then just get a small one.
If you think you might draw, then maybe a larger one would actually be better, but I wouldn't know since I don't draw. My drawings seriously looks like a 4 year old's.
Just remember, it's all up to PREFERENCE.

Your videos are freaking amazing! I stumbled here when trying to decide what iPad to get, yet now I’ve found myself watching through so many of your videos! Your style and editing is so enthusiastic and engaging, but also extremely informative!
Interestingly, I’ve also been thinking about this topic for a while! Even though I just got myself an iPad (and reluctantly have to admit it’s really really good... curse you Apple....) I still feel that my Wacom Intuos is more than enough for most things, and I kinda just really like it with how sturdy it is, and at a fraction of the cost. I think creatives in general feel like the gear has a bigger impact sometimes, especially when we’re still at the early stages, but we eventually figure it out. Doesn’t mean nice gear is bad of course! You’ll have to fight me for my iPad....
I'm a student and I bought the Wacom One tablet for fun , but I have grown accustomed to making digital notes on it as well as make beautiful reports/assignments
Completely agree! So far I've been using my Huion New 1060 Plus tablet and its lasted me at least two years, although I only began taking drawing on it seriously in the last seven months or so. No breakdowns and smooth sailing so far, and building hand eye coordination isn't as tough as it seems. If you're wondering where to start, invest in one of these small graphic tablets and figure out what you desire in regards to your own workflow.
I would love to switch over to a display tablet, but 2 additional reasons why I still wanna stick with my bamboo fun / intuos 4:
6 - No cable chaos (just one good ol USB connection)
7 - No need for extra power (seems display tablets need extra power supply, which is understandable since they're basically monitors. RIP full slotted multi sockets)

Just fyi the new kamvas pro 13/16 only needs one USB cable connection

Totally agree! Now using the small pre-owned wacom board. Before, i have sold the Huion Kamvas 16. One of the reasons was it eats a lot of resources, so the computer was turning off each time of use of the monitor.
If i had it now, guess it would work well, on the new computer, but i don't really care anymore about the screen, main parameter is mobility. Ipad is good tho, but the software there... meh...(sadly, old ipad started to 'fly out' of the large projects in RA), so i guess the wacom intuos draw was a good small useful decision to get access to computer back.
