About Married with Children:
The less-than-lovable Bundys are a radical departure from the saccharine-sweet TV families popular since the days of Father Knows Best. With offbeat humor and unflinching honesty, Married... paints a more realistic picture of middle-class existence, warts and all. Al Bundy (Ed O'Neill) is a shoe salesman who is fond of frequently reliving his doubtful 15 seconds of fame on the football field. Al is terrified of the all-too-frequent amorous advances of his ditsy wife Peggy (Katey Sagal), who spends most of Al's wages at the salon and the mall. They have two teenage kids: stunning but superficial party animal Kelly (Christina Applegate) and egocentric Bud (David Faustino). Married for 16 semi-blissful years, Peggy and Al have found that the secret to a happy marriage is to accept one another's idiosyncrasies.

This was one of the least PC shows ever, and yet here you see Al Bundy as a truly tolerant person that you never thought he could be
That's the thing. All the "good guys" from "manly" TV shows are actually liberal progressives if you look at what they said and did. Al Bundy, Homer Simpson, Michael Knight from Knight Rider, Hannibal from The A Team, Captain Kirk...all very left-wing - anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-fascist, etc.
Married with Children was actually a very liberal show at the time. Sure it poked fun at women but it did the same to men as well. And its themes were always regardless of race.
Funny thing is that this is actually a really pc show. Yes Al is loudmouth and rude, but the thing that many peep don't seems to see is that Al almost always will lose at the end of almost every episode. Love it to death tho.

The writer/writers of this show are true genius.
Its weird to see Al Bundy blue collar boomer be less bothered by an openly gay man than the characters on Friends middle class Gen X. Sure there are some gay jokes but Al treats him like a normal guy no gay panic element. 🤔 Also the guy is not too stereotypically gay. Apparently some shows did know how to write gay characters in the 90s without going for the easy joke at least sometimes.
Excellent observation.
Well Al’s life sucks enough I don’t think he has time to worry about someone’s sexuality
Al was blue collar and he just never bought into some things, like being anti-gay and anti-black. He was anti-French, but who isn't.
But in real life, he wanted to be invited to Amanda Bearse's wedding so he could snicker. Go figure.
