Man, I clicked like before it ever started. The entire "Breakfast in America" album is a freakin masterpiece. Smokey got it, the song is about being a kid then you get sent to school to be transformed. Rodgers Hodgson is a genius & his vocals are so dang good. Hope y'all do some more of them.
Yes, it is a masterpiece, and the entire album is awesome, but "Take The Long Way Home" holds a special place in my heart. I was in my early twenties when that album came out and now, at the age of 66, that song especially resonates with me. You simply can't go wrong with Supertramp, just like you can't go wrong with Cheap Trick.
Supertramp has some great songs! Try, "Goodbye Stranger", "Bloody Well Right", "Give A Little Bit", "Take The Long Way Home", "Dreamer", "It's Raining Again", "Breakfast In America" (both a song and the title of their biggest album).
One of the great British bands and one of their best tracks. Recommend their tracks Dreamer, Lady, Sister Moonshine, Another Man's Woman, Breakfast in America and Give a Little Bit.
@@jangles1839 - you're entitled to your opinion. Supertramp's Lady is from their album Crisis, What Crisis?, an album of theirs that is typically overlooked but which has some good tracks.
Supertramp started out in 1969 but they reached their commercial peak with 1979's Breakfast in America, which had their international top 10 singles "The Logical Song", "Breakfast in America", "Goodbye Stranger", and "Take the Long Way Home". and no it not the man you're mentioned. This is Rock and Pop
Roger Hodgeson is one of two vocalists on Supertramp, and yes his voice is similar to Geddy Lee's, but IMHO a bit more refined. Supertramp is usually labeled as a progressive rock band, and they are from the UK.
Supertramp was all over the radio after Breakfast in America came out with all the hits.Give a Little Bit is a great song from them,it is also in quite a few commercials today.
Supertramp and Rush started in 1968 and 1969. One in England and the other in Canada I really don't think they copied each other. Love the reactions keep them coming!!!!!
Supertramp are an awesome band and despite what everyone says their album 'Crime of the Century' is what really started their rise in being recognized by a larger audience. It's more 'trippy' than Breakfast in America, my personal fav is Dreamer but School, Crime of the Century and Rudy take you on a ride.
I believe Goodbye Stranger was the first single off this album back in the day. Radio station played it all the time. Then I think this one and then maybe Breakfast In America. Take The Long Way Home also got some airplay (great harmonica on that one). The whole album is actually pretty great.
I see many people mentioning Breakfast in America, but their popularity actually goes back to their Crime of the Century album, at least where I live. I think a little Fools Overture might be in line for the next song. Thanks for sharing.
Great Basin is in Nevada. Most iconic Music trivia in the basin is that Bruce Springsteen’s self titled album features a pic of him at a gas station in Valmy -Just about dead center of Nevada along interstate 80 😎
One of a handful of songs I heard as a kid in the 80s that I loved the sound of. No idea what it was about until just a few years ago. Radio Avon was the only station we could get on our second-hand National AM radio, and Supertramp had about five songs on rotation on it.
My favorites out of all their great music is #1 The Logical Song, #2 The Long Way Home, & #3 Goodbye Stranger. What I always took from this song was that it was about the loss of childhood innocence. When you are little, the world is new & magical. Everything is full of joy & wonder. But then you start to grow up, go to school where you learn from adults (& other kids) how to look at your world through different eyes. As you continue to mature, you become part of society & are expected to act, think, & say things a certain way. But deep down you are still an independent person with dreams, creative imagination, & opinions that might go "against the grain" of what you were taught and how others think. It's a song of trying to understand yourself & wanting to break free of conformity instead of being "just another brick in the wall" (as Pink Floyd said). The voices are amazing, but that saxophone is on FIRE! Music from the 70's & 80's & a little bit from the 90's is the only thing I listen to.
Mid 70’s to late 80’s British band, they had SO many great tracks, and a run of 6 albums that artists today would give their right arm for,for just one as high quality as these boys made in that run.
glad you finally got into Supertramp. This song is from Breakfast in america. you should go back in time and listen to any song from Crime of the century: School, Dreamer, Bloody well right, Rudy, they're all good. And the two next albums as well: Crisis...what crisis? and Even in the quietest moment.
I still buy and listen to CDs. Just bought a Pucifer CD last weekend. I like having physical media, something solid in my hands. I get to look at the album art, credits, and sometimes lyrics. Breakfast in America is another great song by these guys. As is Long Way Home.
So many great songs. They are in the prog rock realm. Hugely popular in the late 70'/early 80's. The Breakfast in America album was big and a lot of their songs, like the Logical Song were constantly on the radio. They do have a diverse menu of songs and albums to explore. They were not only great musicians, but their lyrics always meant something. Maybe do Good-Bye Stranger , Take the Long Way Home or Give A Little Bit to name a few. Crime of the Century was their epic concept album and should be listened to from start to finish to get the most out of it. But individual songs like Rudy, Dreamer, School are cool solo too. They had a reputation of putting on great concerts and could play all their songs like studio versions. The Logical Song is about Rodger Hodgson's experience when his parents sent him to Boarding School.
Track 2 from their 6th album, '79s Breakfast in America. I could agree that Geddy Lee and Roger Hodgson are similar in pitch, timbre, register, what have you. I can't agree that the two voices are identical. In a 2012 interview, Roger said "I think it was very relevant when I wrote it, and actually I think it's even more relevant today. It's very basically saying that what they teach us in schools is all very fine, but what about what they don't teach us in schools that creates so much confusion in our being. I mean, they don't really prepare us for life in terms of teaching us who we are on the inside. They teach us how to function on the outside and to be very intellectual, but they don't tell us how to act with our intuition or our heart or really give us a real plausible explanation of what life's about. There's a huge hole in the education. I remember leaving school at 19, I was totally confused. That song really came out of my confusion, which came down to a basic question: please tell me who I am. I felt very lost. I had to educate myself in that way, and that's why California was very good for me to kind of re-educate myself, if you like. But it's interesting that that song, I hear it all the time, it's quoted in schools so much. I've been told it's the most-quoted song in school. That may be because it has so many words in it that people like to spell. But I think it also poses that question, and maybe stimulates something with students. I hope so." Also gotta get to School, Bloody Well Right, and Goodbye Stranger
Check out , Crime Of The Century, Bloody Well Right, Take The Long Way Home, Dreamer, It's Raining Again. Goodbye Stranger, Breakfast in America, School, Put On Your Old Brown Shoes
Rodgers Hodgson and Getty Lee are both sing in that higher register, but their voices are very distinctive to me, since I know all of both bands material and I've been a massive fan of Supertramp and Rush for 50 some odd years!!! 👍👍Supertramp has a hugh and fantastic catalog!!! Enjoy~~👍👍👌👌✌✌😃😃
They had so many great songs that I can't pick a favorite and stick to it. Their production and the use of instruments blended together are top notch. Two lead singers, both play keyboards among other things. Rudy is a powerful song that really shows what they were capable of doing.
Before Roger left the band, I saw Sopertramp four times, and they never disappointed. Always a wonderful, lively, entertaining 'live' show. It's so unfortunate they two writers couldn't keep up their partnership. The band was never the same after Roger left.
Y'all aren't fair - I get totally distracted by the trivia! So naturally, I had to use the Google to find your answer. The Great Basin Desert extends through NV, ID, UT, CA and OR. Yes, it abuts the Mojave to the south. Now, for the most important item - fantastic reaction to a beloved song! 🙂❤
One of the best songs ever! The amazing saxaphonist wrote this song and the singer is the great keyboardist. They have many great songs for you to check out. : )
Breakfast in America is on every single "Must own/have" list since it came out. If you collect vinyl, you gotta have this album. Every single song on it is awesome, and Supertramp was, and perhaps still are, unlike anyone else... I was only 1 year old when this album came out, and it was played on my parents turntable all the time. not one of my big fav go to bands, but the entire album Breakfast In America was freakin amazing! Smokey hit the nail on the head with the deeper meaning of the song.
Supertramp has been my favorite group since the late 1970s. In my opinion their best album is Crime of the Century, followed by Even in the Quietest Moments, and Breakfast in America. Please react to Goodbye Stranger, Rudy, and Fool's Overture.
These guys were pumpin' while I was in high school. Under-rated in my opinion. "School" is probably my favorite tune they've done, but Logical Song is a close 2nd.
I did the same thing! I stole this album off my big sister all the time when I was little to listen to it. Oops I just showed my age. Lol.
Absolutely agree, it's a masterpiece, front to back. The last track is maybe my favorite. It's just brilliant.
His solo album Eye Of The Storm is incredible!
Yes, it is a masterpiece, and the entire album is awesome, but "Take The Long Way Home" holds a special place in my heart. "Goodbye, Stranger" for sure!
I can heavily recommend "Another Man's Woman", "Babaji", "Fool's Overture"

Supertramp is an excellent group to get into. A great prog band which has alot of crazy sounds in their songs (as you can tell).
One of the great British bands and one of their best tracks. Recommend their tracks Dreamer, Lady, Sister Moonshine, Another Man's Woman, Breakfast in America and Give a Little Bit.
I still think Little River Band's song "Lady" is better than Supertramp's. I know they're two entirely different songs but I just prefer to hear LRB's

Yeah, in Canada, Supertramp was HUGE from the Crime of the Century album (1974) to the Brother Where You Bound album (1985).

Grew up on Supertramp. The entire Breakfast in America album is fire. Refined is the perfect word to describe the difference in their voices.
Yeah, he's great and a fellow Canadian, but I don't think Geddy could hit the highs of this song, nevermind the other nuances in Roger's vocals.
IMHO you are wrong... Geddy outshines Roger in every way
Fair
Supertramp is the sound of a 1970s summer roadtrip. A real guilty pleasure
Lived in the Colorado Rockies and played Breakfast in America on many mountain adventures. Love, love, love it ever since its release. ❤
So true !!
"GIVE A LITTLE BIT" is my favorite SUPERTRAMP song, I highly recommend it

Yes! Crime of the Century is by far something they need to check out! They need to do a deep dive into Supertramp period!
I don't think they had CDs back then. I actually got this album on 8-track! Great song and reaction!
And now you will have to check out the band, a favorite going back to the early 1970s. So many great songs.

These guys were pumpin' while I was in high school. Under-rated in my opinion. "School" is probably my favorite tune they've done, but Logical Song is a close 2nd.
