Ronnie was raised Catholic, stepped away from religion, then came back after college. A lot of religious symbolism was used in his music but in general his songs are more fantastical and harken to things like sword and sorcery stories, medieval fantasy, science fiction, etc. He's famous for popularizing the "devil horns" gesture in metal, which was originally a symbol that some Italians, including his grandmother, would flash as a superstition to ward away evil. The Last In Line is, in Dio's words, a story about self-discovery. It's about how we do things and sometimes we don't analyze what we're actually doing until after the fact. But also about the huge potential we have within ourselves.

Everybody reacts to Ozzy Black Sabbath, which is an amazing group, but little attention is paid to Dio Black Sabbath which also contains many masterpieces. "Children of the Sea," "Heaven and Hell," "Die Young," "The Sign of the Southern Cross," and "Mob Rules" are some of the classics. Much of Spinal Tap's parodies comes from the Dio Sabbath touring incidents. The wrong size Stonehenge showing up for the stage performance being one of many call backs to Dio Sabbath's live performances.

Every single Dio song with Sabbath was a masterpiece. Heaven and Hell and The Mob Rules are, IMHO, the closest any band has ever come to the perfect album. Then, if you take those two albums and combine them with Holy Diver, Last in Line and The Sacred Heart, Dio had a five album streak of just incredible, never to be duplicated songs. Again, my opinion but he started to fall off with Dream Evil and just never could recapture the magic of those earlier days.

Dio - We Rock, All the Fools Sailed Away, Egypt (The Chains Are On), Don't Talk to Strangers, One Night in the City,
Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell, Lonely is the Word, Sign of the Southern Cross, Falling off the Edge of the World.
Rainbow - Stargazer you have done already, Kill the King, Gates of Babylon, Temple of the King, Catch the Rainbow.
Elf - Hoochie Koochie Woman, Nevermore, Sit Down Honey.
He also has two Christian songs ( To Live for the King and Mask of the Great Deceiver) with Kerry Livgren, guitarist and songwriter from the group Kansas (Dust in the Wind, Carry On My Wayward Son). Dio is a rock legend!

Dio is such an anomaly in metal music. First of all, he was NOT a devil-worshipper, he was a devout Italian Catholic, and the whole "devil horns" metal thing was sort of a gesture he appropriated from his grandmother as it was used among some old-school European Catholics as like, a little gesture implying one was warding themselves from the devil. He said he did it because it was cool. But other than that, he's a tiny dude, barely 5'4" on his best day, but with one of the most powerful voices on stage. An incredibly humble, personable, and genuine man, and also had a thing for really out-there, cryptic songwriting with really vivid lyrics that simultaneously paint really interesting and vivid images but are mostly cryptic or obtuse metaphors. Either way, a great man with a great musical history and one of the most beloved figures in rock, period. Passed in 2010, sadly.

    • @andychisarick6879

Lots of people have the same misconception about Black Sabbath. Far from devilish drug worshippers, their songs talked about the downside of drugs, like ODs, etc, & how god could save you & don't be seduced by the devil, yada yada. You had to really listen to the lyrics though- so many references to satan & the devil & drugs, plus the album art (which really made a difference in a band's popularity back in the days of vinyl)- anyway all that stuff would make people superficially think, huh, bunch of satanists. Which of course they were not. They never took their own advice on drugs, of course- how they all survived doing such mountains of coke & whatall is a small miracle- but you can't fault them for that, it was the 60s, the 70s, they were rich. Anyway good point about Dio, but even going back to Ozzy, from all accounts they were/are good people, & if naysayers would really LISTEN to their music they'd probably agree.

That was a good catch the hand that writes and moves away is the hand of God on the wall of King Nebuchadnezzar from the Old Testament and the last in line is a reference to Christ talking about the first Shelby last in the last Shelby first so basically he is trying to imply that he and his fans are the downtrodden in the last, but they’ll actually be the first ones to go to the kingdom of heaven

The kid in the video is Meeno Peluce. He co-starred in the tv show "Voyager's" as a young boy and Phineas Bogg (Jon-Erik Hexum) find themselves traveling through history correcting mistakes in time. The show predated "Quantum Leap" which had a similar plot line. Phineas Bogg is based on Jules Verne's lead character Phileas Fogg from "Around the World in Eighty Day." P.S. The first person to successfully travel around the world in 80 days was female journalist, Nellie Bly, who did it in 72 days. This was in 1888, well before air travel. Her biography "Nellie Bly:: Daredevil, Reporter, Feminist" by Brooke Kroeger is a fantastic read.

Became front man for Black Sabbath for a couple years after they fired Ozzy, and then had a successful solo career starting in the early 80s.

Ronald James Padavona was his actual name. Dio had one of those voices that stood out & had so much power. He's credited as being the one to popularize the "devil horns" hand gesture, which I heard him say in an interview actually came from his Italian background as having to do with the evil eye or something. (Although Anton Levay had a different take on it as the founder of the Church of Satan 🤔) He dispelled the thought that he was a Satanist, though. Actually, he and Kerry Livgren of Kansas were lifelong friends who had vastly different spiritual views, but complete respect for each other to the very end. Just before joining Black Sabbath, Ronnie actually sang on a couple of Kerry's songs that were Christian and was apparently proud to have been asked to contribute his vocals. In case Kerry's name doesn't ring a bell, he wrote "Dust in the Wind" & "Carry on my Wayward Son."
My brother was fortunate to meet Dio at a local radio station prior to a concert back in the solo days & had him autograph something for my sister. He was really cordial just like so many have said about him. RIP Dio.

Please please please do some Black Sabbath Dio era. Kudos to you BP for doing some Dio on your channel. I find it such a shame that the greatest legend in metal music is not reacted to on most channels. Thanks for keeping his memory alive! He was considered one of the greatest metal singers and frontmen of all time. If you really want to hear a song way ahead of it's time do "Computer God." It's a banger!
It was written in the early 90’s, at which point computers weren’t nearly as important as nowadays. Seeing how reliant we are on technology today, you can see many things Dio sings about coming true. When these machines stop working properly, humanity will be in a lot of trouble. In an interview Dio tells how technology has removed humanity from the human being. The best audio of them live is HD - Heaven And Hell - Computer God (Live 2007). This is when Black Sabbath changed their name to Heaven And Hell.

But just today. I interpreted the beginning of the video as the kid is delivering something to music executives, and gets a look at that world.

When this came out, Dungeons & Dragons was just becoming popular. So a lot of Heavy Metal bands took on that style of persona in there music. Also influenced by movies that also came out at that time like Conan the barbarian. It was a sign of the times

I love this track, there’s some epic live versions of it. It’s also a song that I’ve listened to dozens of times but I’ve never seen this video before. Holy Diver is great but I’d take this ahead of it

The best Dio song is when he was lead singer for Black Sabbath, the sibs is Heaven and Helll. All time classic tho I'm totally partial to Sabbath when Ozzy fronted them but Heaven and Helll by Dio fronted Sabbath is epic. speaking of Sabbath with Ozzy, you r done the famous hits that get reacted to the most Iron Man, Paranoid and War Pigs. the underrated Sabbath bangers with Ozzy are NIB, Hand of Doom and Electric Funeral. NIB is probably next in line from the ones you've already reacted to. but Hand if Doom and Electric Funeral are the most underrated Sabbath songs. Both are amazing, maybe their best stuff.

The line that says, we are the hand that writes and quickly moves away, I have always heard is a reference to automatic writing or psychography. This is supposed psychic ability that allows one to write subconsciously. It is associated with spiritualism and the occult with famous writer's, W.B. Yeats and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle being practitioners of auto writing. Portions of Van Morrison's Album Astral Weeks are also supposed to be from auto writing. I'm not saying I believe this just an interesting note here and it doesn't take away from the song for me at least.
