- Planted 29 Gallon Set up video.
In this video I share with you a time lapse of me dismantling my 20 gallon long aquarium and setting up a 29 gallon planted tank in its place. This was a very long tedious process but it was well worth it! This time around I decided to use Fluval Stratum aquasoil. I have had huge success with this stuff every single time I use it. That is why I use it. I always get a lot of questions as to why I don't use ADA or Tropica and it is simply because I can Find Fluval stratum everyone and it grows my plants extremely well every time I use it. It is a great product and I highly recommend it! Especially if you are a beginner. It makes feeding your plants very simple and easy to do. I will be using some liquid fertilizer for this tank by NilocG Aquatics. Their AIO fertilizer is awesome! This is a low tech planted tank so I will not be using CO2.

I recall one time I did the jump to a 29g from 20L & my wife didn't even notice. L O L
Hahaha That's great. ( my gf wasnt very happy but eventually gave it heheheeeeee )
I just purchased a 29 gallon to make a planted community tank. So glad I found your channel.
I love 29 gallon tanks! Possibly my favorite tank size to be honest! Nice scape!
Thank you! and yes they are Awesome ! Thank you!
Entertaining. Like the music too.
Thank you so much! ✌🙂
Love your tank! Thanks for including all the information on equipment used on the tank. I'm new with planted tanks and you are my inspiration! Beautiful!!!
That's a beautiful aquascape... Very nice in every way.
Excellent transfer. Very fast, calculated. You had everything moved into the new tank very efficiently.
That’s how I roll! 😅
Great content man. Im setting up my first planted tank a while. Your vids are very informative and inspirational.
Thank you so much!
Tank looks great! Really like it.
Awesome bro!! Can’t wait to see it grow. Looking forward to whatever new fish you put in there.
Me too haha Thanks for all the Love brother!
Nice upgrade !!! Looks great
Beautiful!!! Thanks for the inspiration!!!
The strainer was such a good idea!!! I struggled filling my 29g planted tank recently 🙃🥲 tried the pouring into a bowl method with not much luck lol. Clearing that up took a hot few days…..
Awesome man! I just bought a 30 gal tank for 10 bucks! lol. Just thinking about what kind of fish I want, plants & ideas of what I want to design. Yours is awesome bro! Very realistic to someone that is beginning.
Love it! Setting up my new 29" now
Nice planted tank bro thumbs up.
Wow that is lookin' good dude💙
Thanks Lydia!
That looks Amazing. 👍
Haha Thanks man!
just started my journey on a 29 gal still getting decor and plant for it will be done in couple weeks hopefully
Ha! Found it. Now I can redo my Betta tank with your tips and this video! Tysvm!!😊
JEANNIE B haha no thank you! 🙏 new video coming today! ✌️🙂
Petco is currently having a dollar per gallon sale. They have these 29 gallon tanks for $29. After seeing this, I may have to get one.I wasn't too sure about the size but it looks great.
Had Enough it is by far one of my favorite dimensions! You won’t regret it! ✌️
Masterfully done brotha. Great looking tank!! Thanks for sharing and as always...Do what you do if it works for you.
Thanks man!
Looks great!
Just subbed! Notes on!! Love your stuff, man.
🙏☺️ awesome thank you so much! ✌🙂
Looks great man!!
Thanks bro!
Great great great tank!!!
Hi, I’m new to the hobby and my coworker donated his 30 gal tank with different catfish so I wanted ideas for a planted tank (natural is always better in my opinion). This vid was beautifully made so I will definitely be borrowing some ideas. :)
Also, if you’re still looking for awesome koi angels Dans Fish sells really nice ones from what I’ve seen on his channel and website. I haven’t bought any but might be a good idea to try 👍🏼
Looks awesome btw. I'm about to reboot my 38. I want some that background plant. Keep it up!
The bacopa if round leaf are money. If spade shape are Carolina.
My 20 has Carolina. My 38 has money that i got from the yard.
I need a surface skimmer but i don't use canister :(
Thanks for all the love man I really appreciate it!
yipee! the master of planted
dbachelor's Planted Aquarium haha thanks bro 🔥🔥🔥
Love the music!
Who did the music?
I liked the before, too lol. I think the 29s might be my favorite (and good on you for the window, people who don't groove on that placement will never have the joy of seeing their golden wonder killies flashing in the sunlight or bettas pensively watching the sun set or corys frisking under the full moon. Fish know darned well what a sky is, and I think they miss it- to me a window is the difference between a schoolroom and a prison cell, and I never wanted to be a jailer).
excellent
I like buying the topfin one it’s a kit and it came with a heater, net, filter , white lighting and thermometer
The light it comes with sucks I have the same kit I got it when I was new the money u spend for it ain’t worth it IMO the filter is shit the lighting is eh heck even there little yellow thermometers are off by 4 degrees f don’t believe me ! ? Get a different one and test it I have 3 of these kits in my fish room and they al did the same to me but I guess if ure just wanting a quick setup there nice
Plz do a shrimp tank with the 20 long as I want to set one up and you would help me so much if you did
You are the second person to ask me to do that. You'll see that video in the near feature!
Love it! It looks great!!!
Thanks brotha!
Nice.
Thank you!
I have the same aqarium stand! I was worried about that there is no top to the stand.
Nice looking tank. I just bought a 29 gal for 30.00 at petco dollar per gal sale to replace my 20 long. Will fit on same stand
I think mine was 60 I wanted the black silicone so bad haha
@@ThePlantedTankTV I'm trying to decide what i want to use for substrate. I have eco complete now in my 20 long but want to switch it up. Thinking i may go sand. I want a natural look to it.
Your tank is beautiful, and it is called foam board, I brought a background already, just setting up a 29-0 gallon. Wish I'd seen this first. Ordered my plants off Father Fish channel what a great deal. I have a 45 gal hex tank already but got a new to me tank. I brought both used. You did a great job at it. Wonder if you still have it?
I no longer have that tank but I have a 40g tank now that is very similar in dimensions. Have it running a classic organic potting mix and gravel set up right now about 3 months in having great success so far! Thank you! I appreciate the kind words! 💚💚
Did you have to cycle the new tank? Love the 29 gallon
I’ve been subscribed to your channel for probably a couple months now. Actually, I think yours was my first subscription. I am definitely going to go low tech for my first tank. I’m still doing research. You do so much with low tech set ups, you’re kind of my “go to” channel for education. I really like your presentations and your work in general. Being a Botanist, I have always known I wanted a heavily planted tank. You give me a lot of inspiration, thank you, J! When I’ve got my tank up and running, I’d appreciate your input and any suggestions on making it better. Would it be OK if I send a few pictures? Again, thanks for the great video content, and I’ll keep watching.
Yeah that's absolutely fine! If you want you can send me stuff on my instagram @theplantedtanktv Thank you so much! ✌🙂🔥🙏
Awesome! It’ll be several more months before I’m up and running, but I’d love to get your opinion when I’m there. Thanks!
The george farmer colander too lol. I use em but my colander are tiny
Haha Finally someone notices! hahaha Awesome! #RedColander
Yea I definitely noticed the George farmer colander haha.
Haha Awesome! I love George!
how long you wait to introduce your live stock into the tank ? , i’m planning to set up a 29 gallon planted tank like yours the filter that i’m going to use would be the eheim 2217 that is already working in my 100 gallon tank for almost a year , so my question is if i using this filter can speed up the cycled for the tank and how many water changes i have to do a week , bro i love your videos and this is why i’m asking a question to an expert !!
How do you keep frogbits?
My frogbits just decay off. What am i doing wrong because my amazon and anubias all survived.
I have the same possibility. I have a 29 gallon aquarium not used and a 20L that I am using. What I couldn't get clearly from your video was how you safely took apart the 20, set up the 29, and didn't hurt the fish. What did you do with the fish? Did you preserve the 20L water?
how many pounds of fluval stratum
What plants can fare in sand substrate in NiCrew Classis LED Plus Planted light, in a 20 gallon high?
I just replaced my 20 gal with a 29 I love it
It looks so much for for only adding 9 gallons. haha Loving mine as well! Thank you for stopping by my channel! ✌😍
@@ThePlantedTankTV yeah i noticed that alot of people have instead or redoing there 20 they just redo it by swaping a 29 in its place which it alot easier and again 9 more gallons of space for your fish
What kind of tongs/pinchers were you using?
He much soil did you use for that tank?
Nice Setup. Can you please provide the dimensions of the 29 gallon tank.
I believe 30 long 16 wide and 18 tall
How many pounds of substrate did you use
how much fluval stratum did you use?
What kind of substrate?
Hi is that was gravel substrate in the 20 gallon if yes then what plants were there
As I am planning to have a easy planted tank with gravel's but not sure what plants go in gravel beside java fern anubias can you name some that can go with gravel substrate with liquid fertilizer Tia
Where did you get the tank?
Do you use Co2??
How many watt is your heater?
where did you get that tall sword?
What type of filter do you have
I have a 20 gallon tall right now. I may have the opportunity to give the tank only away and get a longer tank. 20 long or 29 gal. Is it worth it? In terms of stock capability and stuff. What are the pros and cons? My 20 tall is a bit high, on a shelf in the living room. I have apython hose but the brass adaptor doesnt work for my sink. So i use the traditional bucket method.
Current stock: bolivian ram, 3 guppies, about 12 guppy fry, 2 black skirt tetras, 5 neon tetras. Am looking for a way to give away or sell much of the guppies... but in manhattan there are not many available choices.. need asSisTancE.
How to you clean the bottom of the tank with soil? I haven't done a planted aquarium yet and I just bought a new 29 gallon.
Aubrey Coy I don’t. Lol I let the bacteria down there break down the waste and then my plants eat it! It’s much more natural this way! Thank you for stopping by ✌️😍🌱✅
What is this song tho.. omg i love it
What are your opinions on Carib Sea Eco Complete? I plan to use it as a cap for *Dirt on a 29 gallon
Check my most popular video. I've talked about Eco-Complete a lot. If you can afford Aquasoil go for it. I think Aquasoil should always be your #1 pick and then Eco-Complete. I really don't recommend using it as a cap. There are much better options.
How do you like that stand? I’m looking for a stand for my 29 gallon.
Joe A awe man I love it! Don’t regret it at all!!! 🔥🔥🔥
looks good! question, is it ok if plants touch the heater?
Some plants will get burnt but I've never had any plants burn!. As long as you have good flow I think they will be okay.
The Planted Tank thanks for the quick reply, I am setting up my first 20L planted tank and had this concern...
Sorry maybe this is a dumb question I’m knew to this, but what were you spraying on the rocks and plants? And how do you treat your water and for how long leading up to before your fish?
I use pre-de-chlorinated water with seachem prime! I was spraying the plants with water so they didn't dry out and die! 🙏🙏🙏
How much substrate used in ur tank ??
I keep asking this question from UA-camrs but never get an answer. I love scapes like this but how do you gravel vac it? There are so many areas you can't reach.
You are not supposed to gravel vac.
So I want to take my fish out so I can do a planted tank, I have to take the sand out and buy the aqua soil and stuff which I know will make the tank foggy but will I be able to put the fish back in the same day? I don’t really know what to do with them in The meantime I have a big bucket I was going to put them in but how long would it be safe to keep them in the bucket while waiting for the tank to clear up?
I think you should be okay top put them back in soon after as long as your filter is cycled. I would wait a bit for the water to clear up maybe around an hours or so!. they should be fine in a bucket but if it is going to be for a long period ( no longer than 12 hours ) I would add an air stone!
How many bags did you use of the fluval gravel
A littl eless than 2 17.6lb bags. ✌🙂
Is that a sturdy tank stand? My local petco has one and I want to buy it. But I'm worried it won't support the weight of my tank.
It never gave me any issues it worked great for me. I thought the same thing when I felt how light it is.
If Fluval stratum lowers PH, how can I do a water change without fluctuations if my tap is 7.8 and my tank is lower, let's say 7.4?
kiLLjoy24CALI I’ve never had any issues with that. But you can always use seachem alkaline buffer to bring it back up. Not usually an ideal thing to do though since the stratum makes things perfect for tropical fish. 😃
Hello. What is the soundtrack’s name?
Build a frog terrarium in one of the 20s I have a 55 I'm about to build on in
How do you find the 24/7 to be working in the 29-gallon tank? I am looking for one for my 29 gallon tank and didn't know if it had enough PAR
Believe me its plenty of light. It's very strong actually. So strong to the point where I dont even use it anymore. I use my 24" current usa satellite freshwater led plus. It's only 18watts and its growing everything really well. If you are not using co2 you are better off using that light. If you do plan on co2 got for the finnex. ✌🙂
@@ThePlantedTankTV thanks! No CO2 so deciding between Finnex Planted Plus 24/7 HLC and Nicrew ClassicLED G2 and Beamswork FSPEC DA. Wasn't sure if any of these would work well on 18" tall 29gal, especially if trying for some faster growing Rotala or Ludwigia
How many pounds of soil did you use for the 29 gallons
I believe if I remember correctly I used a little less than two seventeen pound bags of fluval stratum
How do you clean the soil? Or you just rescape and our new soil ?
The soil doesn't really require cleaning. I still have this same substrate in this tank today. Still going strong too. 🙏🌱🍃
Wow ok that was my only concern I’ve never had a tank with soil in in just gravel. But they year I’m going to do a soil / sand one
I realize that this is an old video, but how much substrate did you use for that? Looks like you used 2x 20lb bags?
Yup x2 of the big fluval stratum bags!
I actually wasnt expecting a reply but hey i got one! Ive been planning to setup a 29g, but i only got 10kg of aquasoil. Since im here, i would like to ask for opinions about my planned setup,
Aquasoil for the bottom (about 1.5 in)
+
caribsea supernaturals gravel on top (to create atleast 3.5 in of total subst.)
Did you borrow George Farmers collider?
That 29 that you are using measures 30" x 12" x 18". Right? The substrate looked like it was deep enough for plants after the first bag (at least 2 inches). Am I right? What size bag was that?
No 2 inches isn't anywhere near enough. Especially for bigger plants. Aquasoil isn't heavy enough. You need a minimum of 3 inches. I like to have 3 inches in the from and slope up to 4-5 inches in the back
Ok. What size bag was that and how much did it cost you?
Aquarium gravel that is small enough and safe enough for the type of fish that I want to get and suitable for plants is too expensive.
@@thomasashe2681 yeah it's pretty expensive. You can find fluval stratum at Petco for around 40-45$ per 17.6lb bag. I use almost two whole bags. Deep substrates are really beneficial for planted aquariums. A lot of people talk about anaerobic conditions but plant roots produce oxygen so its literally impossible for it to go anaerobic. ✌
anyone know which brand of tank that is?
Aquarium masters
What are you spraying it with?
Water to keep the plants from drying out... 🙏🙏
Where do you buy your plants?
h2oplants.com
buceplant.com/
aquariumplants.com/
aquaforestaquarium.com/
✌🙂🙏
Love it, how many bags you used?
I had 20 of the 17 pound bags and I still have about 3/8 of a bag left!
@@ThePlantedTankTV dang that's a lot I think I am goin to dirt mine to see if its worth it, you could do a shrimp tank with the 20 long
Fragok Gonza ohhh I could!!! Haha thanks for the idea!!! I like to run my substrate pretty thick. It makes it easier to plant and seem to last a bit longer. I’ve always wanted to dirt a tank but every time I do I think I choose the wrong stuff 🤬
@@ThePlantedTankTV blue dreams or blue carbons would be amazing theres a lot of gorgeous shrimps,I did dirt once but like you I think I chose the wrong dirt ,this time I am goin to do the organic miracle grow one and cap it with eco complete
Ahhh. Yeah I'd get the miracle grow stuff but for some reason I can't get it in ohio. and nobody will ship it to me. >:(
You can make your 20 gallon a betta sorority
I was thinking about that!. I might be doing a shrimp tank. with a 30" Finnex stingray. and low light plants.
What stand do you keep your tank on?
I'm using a aqueon 30" pine stand! ✌🙂
The Planted Tank thanks so
much!
Can I have the 20 long
How many pounds of fluval stratum have you used.!!?
I believe some where around 24-25 pounds. It's about 3 inches deep in the front of the tank and about 4 in the back.
@@ThePlantedTankTV
Cool thnx for replying bro...
@@ThePlantedTankTV
Btw 8.8 pounds of this substrate will be suitable for how many gallons of tank ...Do you have any rough idea with 2 inches deep in front and 3 inches in back.?
All those buckets of water
Yeah ✌😩
Is this good for Cory doras ?
Yes
The Planted Tank ok awesome setting my tank up this weekend :) getting my plants in by Friday hopefully
The Planted Tank did it lower ur ph a lot ?
Can you tell me how you cycle your tank?
I dont. Lol I never cycle my tanks. There's no need to with planted aquariums. Unless you are using a substrate that leaches a bunch of ammonia. Ammonia is the preferred source of nitrogen for aquatic plants so it get consumed rather quickly if you start with some nice healthy plants. Hope that helps.
@@ThePlantedTankTV thank you so much. You dont understand how much I was struggling and you gave me an easy answer to my question.
@@Roman-fo7to keep in mind when you first set up a llanted tank you should be doing at least 2 50% water changes a week for the first two weeks so if ammonia does build up to harmful levels you'll be water changing it out anyways. ✌🙂
@@ThePlantedTankTV okay thanks. When did you start to add fish? I'm guessing you did it slowly like a small amount of fish at a time.
@@Roman-fo7to actually I add them on day one. Haha never once had a fish die from to much ammonia after I started setting up tanks with a lot of plants. I did when I first got into aquariums and I wasn't using any plants at all but once I started using nice good quality plants, boy did that make life so much easier haha
Is the Dollar Tree background made of cardboard?
No I think it’s called poster board.
Thank you brother🙏🏾
@@darreldavis1 🙏🙂
I would not put angelfish into a 30 gallon aquarium they get way too big 55 gallon at least
That’s why I rehomed them. You should watch the rest of the videos before you comment
Bredder
What was the substrate?
That was mentioned in the video.
Nice go shave
