I'm just starting my 29 gal. african cichlid tank , but I will eventually move them up to my 60 gal. tank when my oscars get their upgrade to a 120 gal. tank. So far I have a male and female melanochromis mbuna auratus, a male electric blue johanni, and a female cobalt blue zebra. I am so glad that my landlord is an avid fishkeeper too, because any other landlord would be freakin' out by now with me already having 4 tanks in the house, and it seems like you can never have too many tanks...right? I love your channel, I learn so much from your experiences that you share with us. Thank you for doing what you do!

Great list, I suspected shellies were going to be #1. I started with a 29 but needed to move to larger tanks because of the fish I wanted to keep. That tank is now my QT. Thanks!

Thank you Zenzo! Awesome info for someone trying to get into African cichlids. West African fish you will want softer slightly acidic water parameters and if you don't want the spawning (Kribs) keep the temp on cooler range (73-75°F). If you want spawning. Raise to 76-80 and add lots of tannins. Make it a relative increase though don't go from 72 to 80 to get them to spawn. Make incremental increases over a week or so and add surface disruption for oxygenation. And prep crushed foods first week. The fry will bottom feed and then once free swimming and bigger radius from parents add live baby brine to diet.

Aqua Discovery I’ve kept/bred at least 2 dozen West African Cichlids. P. Taeniatus (Moliwe, Nigeria Red, Kienke, Lobe, Wouri etc), Annalachromis Thomasi (Guinea), Nanochromis sp, rare stuff like Chromidotilapia Guntheri ‘Loenberghi’,
      P. Humilis ‘Liberia Red’, rare Hemichromis like Guinea 1 and many more.
I’ll condition spawners with live white worms, black worms (the best), frozen blood worms. Almost all WA fry should take newly hatched baby brine shrimp. White worms are a good food prior to BBS. Good to hear from another WA cichlid guy.

hands down the best 29 gallon tank video I've watched so far. I'm still unsure if I will be able to get a Lemon Jack Peacock ( just 1 ) for my 29 gallon and add a couple 1-4 other community fish. I'm going to keep researching but this video warrants a subscribe right out the gate. If you have any suggestions of a cichlid that would be very similar to the Lemon Jack Peacock that would fit better i would love to hear about them.

Great list! I have all the above fish and agree that they would all do well in a 29 gallon tank. I started with 2 Kribensis which had 25 babies in a 10 gallon. I moved them to a 20 long. A year later all 27 plus 4 Congos are in a 75 scaped with river pebbles, anubias, stumps and sand and they love it.-constant color and action. My simulus and julies started in a 10, but I now have 3 julies, 4 leleupi, 3 similus, and 2 baby pearly calves in a 40 breeder. They all do very well together and appreciate the surface area. I have course aragonite, shells, and lots of rock work with crevices. They love it and the similus are constantly excavating. I started my brichardi in a 75 gallon along with some tretacephalus. They breed like crazy, but I think a 29 or a 40 breeder with just brichardi would be better.

What are your feelings on undergravel aquarium plates?
Tons of fun 60 years old and I've got about 9 tanks. So I'm going to revive my 29. And I'm going to start easy with Africans
I used to raise full size seahorses and starfish. However, five kids nine grandkids later. Lol I'm reduced. But everything I ever did in the past I did this in undergrabble filter. You seemed really knowledgeable and I'd like to know your views. Thanks so much and be safe, you have a great cast and channel! Kevin

I am considering settling up a 20 long for shell dwellers once that tank becomes available. As you know, 20 longs have the same footprint as a 29. How many multis would you put in that size tank? I don’t recall you saying that in the video. Sorry if you did and I missed it.

Zenzo, thank you for this. I have been bouncing around for awhile about what to do with tanks. I just purchased a very young Fahaka Puffer (Irene) who currently lives in a 30 long. She is about 3" long. I just found a deal on a 170 ($60) that will be her permanent home and will leave me the 30. So now I'm thinking maybe I should turn the 30 into a multi tank. I think it makes more sense than in a 90 gallon tank. I'm wondering though could I still add a few ciprochromus leptosoma? I have a difficult time imagining sizes of fish from measurements in a book? I think I will probably stick to Multis and nothing else but I am still figuring it out.
I am probably asking because I like to comment on your videos so you know your Patrons pay attention.

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  4 роки тому +2

The leptosoma will need more space than a 30. They would be better in a 55 or larger.

I am afraid I have an overcrowded 31 (?) gallon bowfront. It has a Lulupi; a Tret (poor mans Frontosa); Tropheus; Brichardi with doz offspring; 3 tiger barbs; 5 bleeding heart tetra; 2 bristlenose and 2 dwarf synodontis. This tank has many rocks. I rarely see the Tret and catfish. The Tropheus seems to be the boss. He chases the barbs and tetras a bit now that he is an adult. The Brichardi hover around. I bought the tetras and barbs last because everyone was hiding so much. I plan on taking out some of the young Brichardi to the fish store, but it is hard for me to do that. I don't know what kind of care they will get. I do weekly water changes and feed froz food daily. They can even be in the store for too long some times, not getting the best care and exposed to disease. Do you ever have these type of dilemmas?

I have a tank with all these guys and a few others and it does pretty good. Just make sure you have a hiding spot for every fish as they can be very aggressive. Especially if you're keeping all males.

Hey, I have 65g tank with 16 young mbunas 2inch big now. Two dominant males (Cynotilapia Pulpican Maingano) are occupying each 1/2 of the tank and push other fish aside, so they are somewhere in the corner or hiding. What would you do ? Lots of rocks, caves, shells, and a slate wall that breaks the tank into 2 areas. Also crypto plants. The juli controls 1 rock pile on one side and the brichardi controls the rock pile on the other. The multis live in a shell bed in a corner. The cyps hang above the rocks. Lots of fun to watch the interactions.

A 30g long is a much better tank with the extra length but a 29g works.
I don’t like Malawi cichlids but had a couple species breeding in 29/30g along with many others.. I’m lucky and near the biggest cichlid expert (I’m no beginner either) who carries a lot of rare stuff..I’ve kept/bred-Psuedotropheus Lanisticola (only Malawi Shell dweller), Labidochromis Carelus (Lions Cove),
Many Pelvicachromis Taeniatus color morphs, P. Taeniatus sp. Blue fin (old name), Annalachromis Thomasi, Nanochromis sp,
Julidochromis Regani ‘Kipili’, Neolamorologus Caudopunctuatus, Altolamprologus Compresicepps ‘Dwarf Sumbu Shell’..
I’ve also kept several Tangynikan Shell dwellers. Besides the ones you mentioned, there’s probably 6-10 other species.
You had good choices. Neolamp. Brichardi (Daffodil) are great beginner Tangynikan cichlids. Just nice fish too.
West African Cichlids are way underrated and are a challenge. Pelvicachromis Humilis, Chromidotilapia sp, Hemichromis like Guinea 1 & 2 are just a few people should try. Those are more medium sized (4-5”), beautiful but aggressive and need a 4 foot long tank..
Sorry, I really babble about fish
