    Great video and good tips for beginners and I think low-tech tanks will be more popular with the people that aren't already in the hobby so it's cool to get them in. 👍 how would you add soil to a tank that's already setup without resetting the whole thing? I've tried to wrap up dirt skin something biodegradable then cover that with some sand and rocks and it seems to work okay just looking for other ideas.

    Will java fern and hyrocotyle tripartia survive in Blackish water Tank?? Because it has quite low light. Tank is 7 gallon tank with 6 watt light. And no co2. Substrate is Sand and beneath it there is ada soil.

  • @TheMoreYouGrow

    Love the look of this tank man! Had a few questions after watching. How much easier/harder is this 10 gal set up compared to something like a 20 gal? I saw you say you do liquid fertilizer once or twice a week, do you start that immediately after planting the plants or is there a wait period? With this being aquasoil does it ever need replacing or redoing the tank with new soil? Last thing, how often do you do root tabs for these plants? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to learn all I can before I get started haha take care man!

    • @ThePlantedTankTV
      @ThePlantedTankTV  6 років тому

      The More You Grow I would say it’s about the same for me because I usually over stock my tanks. But for the dosing I usually wait until it is balanced to start dosing just to minimize algae growth in the cycling/maturing faze. As for root tabs I don’t use any at all in this tank. When I was setting it up I mixed some osmocote plus into the bottom of the substrate. But to be honest I’m not sure if they are actually helping because I can see some of them but they don’t look to be dissolving at all.. to be honest though I think for a twenty gallon and a ten gallon the current USA satellite plus is hands down the best lighting and they are affordable now too.

    • @ThePlantedTankTV
      @ThePlantedTankTV  6 років тому

      And I would say that this aquasoil should last me a minimum of five years as long as I’m still dosing but I could also rely on fish food and waste

    • @TheMoreYouGrow
      @TheMoreYouGrow 6 років тому +1

      Great info! When you say over stock do you mean plants, fish or both? How much osmocote did you add for this tank? The aquasoil sounds like it’s good stuff! When the aqua soil gets used up do you just take the water/fish out and start the tank out with new soil and replant it then add the fish and water back for the beneficial bacteria I assume? Do you need to go back to the light schedule when restarting to reduce algae with all the new nutrients or by adding the some of the old water back will it not needed. Thanks for all the help. When I do this I’ll be making a video and I’ll plug your channel. You really do have a lot of great info in a concise way of explaining!

    • @ThePlantedTankTV
      @ThePlantedTankTV  6 років тому +1

      The More You Grow the aquasoil won’t necessarily get used up until I stop dosing but it will lose its buffering ph ability all aquasoil buffer your hardness to make your water softer for tropical fish. I really love this btw. But I really feel like this stuff would last almost forever as long as I’m dosing. So I probably won’t be resetting anything any time soon. Even if I do a rescape I’d still keep using my soil I have already. I’m editing a video about plants for low tech setups right now.

      I think as a beginner the easiest way to start dosing pressurized co2 is to go with a aquatek mini paintball regulator. Then grab yourself a paintball tank from dicks sporting goods and have them fill it. They are only 30$ and the first fill is free. Then 5 dallors per refill after that. Mine lasts me about three months per bottle I bought two bottles so I can just swap it out when it runs dry. Hope that helps and thank you so much!

    Hey, first off I love this video and your channel so much. Your gouramis steal the show Everytime. So my question is: why do my plants get holes the more I put fertilizer? I use aquascaper complete which is complete Garbage for my plants unfortunately and hasn't really worked that well. I might have to upgrade to tropica or something. So when I didn't use liquid fertilizer at all, I never had holes in my anubias, but since I started I got holes in my anubias and now holes in my bacopa or whatever that other plant is. Why is that? When I cut back on fertilizer cause I gave up I didn't see more holes...sorry for long questions hope it makes sense.

I use hydrogen peroxide to kill it but it only works temporarily. Any ideas on combating the algae & cyano? I do 25% weekly water changes using API water conditioner & aquarium salt. Fish are healthy. I don't even bother with the bright light on my 29g because algae will grow like mad. I only use the blue lights but some of my plants have suffered as a result. It's frustrating because when I use bright lighting, the plants look great but the algae grows out of control. I turn it down and the algae slows up but the plants are losing their green color.. So annoying.

      Getting rid of cyano is super easy. I use Chemiclean and an air stone. Works for me every times. With the algae I would start doing 50% water changes instead of 25. The dirt is probably leaching a lot of nutrients still. You can use seachem excel to help kill the algae too. Lower the light down to 6 hours would also help! Hope that all helps. ✌🙂

    I have a beamswork 36" on my 38 gallon. The light only have blue and white leds at 6500k. And 2600 lumens. My tank is 15" from the light to substrate. Think its enough light? I do have another of the same but took it off as I thought it was too much because of brown algae.

    Hey man thanks for the helpful vids...
    Just curious though I planted my tank (5.5 gal) with some micro sword (activ flora substrate) and it doesnt seem to be growing much. It did melt back at first, but hasnt done anything since, i also use liquid fertilizer.
    Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

    • @ThePlantedTankTV
      @ThePlantedTankTV  6 років тому +1

      Micro sword has really never done well for me in a low tech setup. In my opinion it's one of those plants that require co2. Same thing happened to me in my 5 gallon. Then I moved it to my 20 long high tech and it started growing like crazy. My best guess is that it needs more co2. Thanks for stopping by! ✌😍

    I have a planted tank using gravel substrate. I have tried water changes. Vacuuming the gravel some. Rinsing the filter sponge and doing everything I thought was right. The plants are beautiful. Fish appear healthy. API i believe is the brand...those test strips test where they should but the water is murky..yellowish almost. Help please!

    • @ThePlantedTankTV
      @ThePlantedTankTV  5 років тому

      For a planted tank I wouldn't recommend doing any sort of gravel vaccing. Bu t you may have either a bacteria bloom or free floating algae. That's all I can think of really. My guess is free floating algae and seachem excel will knock that out of the of the park pretty quick. You can send me a picture if you like on my Instagram @theplantedtanktv

    • @ThePlantedTankTV

      It is if you are running pressurized co2. It helps you know how much co2 you can pump in while still being safe for your fish but if you aren't us you nf pressurized co2 you won't need it at all. ✌🙂

    • @ThePlantedTankTV
      @ThePlantedTankTV  5 років тому +1

      Onnic technically you can go without liquid fertilizer for the first six months if you are using aquasoil. I do it just to be sure my plants are getting everything they need but you don’t need to use it at all really because once six months has passed their are plenty of organic being Brocken down this feeding the plants. I hope this answers your question! ✌️🙏🙂

      @شرموس 5 років тому

      Oh thx J, then what i get from u is six month is enough for fish waste to build up and decompose to feed plants, now for aquasoil, is it nessesary or can i depend only on fish waste (if i have an old tank with gravel not being vacuumed) like i do with aquaponics,sorry if the question is a bit stupid, but I'm new to aquatic plants 😥

    • @ThePlantedTankTV

      Ion Alexandru you don’t really have to unless your using a lot of water column feeding plants. The substrate also absorbs the fertilizer keeping it fresh for longer. Hope that helps! ✌️🙂

    • @ThePlantedTankTV
      @ThePlantedTankTV  5 років тому +1

      For this specific tank I used two 8.8lb bags. It is a little overkill but I like a deep substrate. It gave me about 3.5-4 inches all the way around. My newest scape has about 2/3rds of a 17.6lb bag. That gave me about 2-3 inches ( two in front - 3 in the back ) I hope that answers your question! 🙏✌🙂
