This sort of breakdown of minutiae, helping me understand subtleties that I'm not sophisticated enough to spot on my own, is what I love about your work.
It’s funny, I think a lot of people are acting like JV’s gonna retire after this season or the next, but man still has a 96mph fastball and confident command of his pitches; he could be around a bit longer than some think. Not saying he’s gonna reach 300 wins, but he ain’t sputtering out by any means. Most other batters would have been cooked in that at-bat.
As a biased brewers fan Contreras is looking like an MVP candidate so far this year. Every single time he steps to the plate I’m happy. Not to mention his constant A+ performances behind the dish.
feels like he could've gotten him to chase easily at the end after the barrage of fastballs instead of staying stuck on that same pitch until the death
Yeah, he definitely seemed like he was ready to swing at everything. I even might have just gone with a changeup instead of the 5th fastball, since he clearly missed his spot with the 4th one. He missed it even more with the 5th one, and paid for it.
@@LucianDevine Massively armchair coaching here but surely throwing 5 fastballs when he's getting contact every time is like.... a bad idea right? Feels like he's just asking for him to finally get good contact. Like you say, you'd think a curve or changeup to keep him guessing would be the move instead of the 3rd, 4th or 5th fastball
@@Wronkey360 Usually they try to speed a hitter up then get em with the off speed, or do the opposite. So yeah I assume you generally don't want to just spam 96 mph every pitch.
He is 4 strikeouts from passing Greg Maddux’s in all time strikeouts. I knew Verlander is an all time great but when you see he is nearly about to pass arguably the best pitcher of all time in a stat just makes it so much more insane
I mean, of course Verlander is a great pitcher... But I think it's important to bear the following in mind: In 1998, Maddux struck out 204 batters in a season in which the NL averaged 1091 strikeouts per team. In 2019, Verlander struck out 300 batters in a season in which the AL averaged 1428 strikeouts per team. Strikeouts are on the order of 50% higher, so if you compare peak seasons, it makes sense that Verlander's 300 is about 50% higher than Maddux's 204. However, for career numbers, and relaxing it a bit to a factor of 25% higher just to be safe, Verlander would need 4,200 strikeouts to even get close to matching Maddux's proportional success. Maddux was that good, and that deserves to be remembered as Verlander takes the record.
@@don_5283 even when Verlander passes Maddux, Maddux will still be better, all I’m saying is that Verlander is getting up there in counting stats with all time greats. Scherzer is right behind him also
Thanks Jomboy, for putting this at bat up in its entire sequence. A lot of highlights were just showing the home run pitch. It was the best battle in mlb so far this season between hall of fame pitcher and potential hal of fame player.
More breakdowns like this! It keeps the excitement of the season alive and allows people like me who mainly just watch my team (the Yankees) experience different moments throughout the season that I normally wouldn’t really get to see.
I think that a change up would’ve been the best option for the second 3-2 pitch because it looks so much like the fastball and he was clearly wanting the fastball.
My gut would have been changeup after the 4th fastball in a row, and first one to miss his spot. He missed his spot even more on the 5th fastball and paid for it.
I think I'd feel better if I tried the off speed, rather than just keep spamming FBs. If he still had nearly 100mph I'd understand trying to blow by him, but he was making contact, just seems silly.
These kinds of duals are so fun. I can't even imagine the mind games involved and what would be going through each man's head, especially when it's a high pressure game and situation.

That change up reveals the better. It’s more than staying alive, you can see that he is triggering but then has to slow his bat speed down because he is ahead of it. He pulls it foul and ends off balance. That means he is looking fastball. To me, JV challenging him for the rest of the at bat is both mad confidence and ego, and it is both what makes him great and what makes him give up the home run. He is fouling you straight back, bro!
