Tommy John is why I personally like the Basketball Hall of Fame system. He (and Dusty Baker for that matter) 100% should be in for their contributions to the game. They are the people in baseball that large numbers of people will/do remember 30 years after they retire, and at it's core isn't that really what the Hall of Fame is about?

I’m with you on John’s case. He’s an 80 fWAR dude, and when you combine that with his status as a pioneer it’s an easy yes (especially compared to other famous accumulators like Moyer who ended up more around 45 fWAR).
One thing I feel people evaluating baseball today fail to take into account is, what was valued at the time the player was playing? So, today, it doesn’t matter how many innings a pitcher pitches, or how many wins he has. That absolutely mattered when Tommy John played. Sure, no one cares about a twenty-win season or 288 career wins. When Tommy John pitched, 20 wins was a huge number. 300 wins was a sure-fire Hall of Famer. John got to 288 DESPITE missing a year undergoing a primitive version of a surgery that now bears his name. One more year in the prime of his career and Tommy John is a 300-game winner. In my opinion, he has even more of a BASEBALL case to be made for Curt Schilling, who got to 216 wins in a time when wins still counted.

Not to mention they literally changed rules about defensive positioning (all players aside from the catcher must be in fair territory) to nerf him. Best defensive 1B ever? Probably. Basketball is by far the best HoF, mainly because its not a HoF for one league. the NFL, MLB, and NHL are elitist, classist, spoiled dicks who play favorites and have obvious bias and no consistency. Basketball HoF measures the impact of players, not just in the NBA, but the global sport and its rich history. Vince Carter will be a Hall of Famer and most basketball fans would be ok with that. "Hall of very good" sells the whole thing short imo. Yes, very good players make it in more often than any other sport, but each on had a tangible impact on the sport, the culture, or the community. A good example is Yao Ming only played 7 good seasons, but made the all star team in each, was the first foreign player picked number 1, and is an actual legend in China and inspired millions of kids to pick up a basketball. My potentially hot take: There needs to be a section in the hall of fame where the steroid era guys go as well as pete rose and joe jackson, etc,. that acknowledges they were some of the greatest to play the game but also the most human, who despite their great gifts also fell to temptation and were caught. Their numbers keep them in the same building as their peers but their actions prevent them from standing shoulder to shoulder with them. Would be a good, if symbolic, message to send to young players. If you cheat,you may win, but your actions will never be forgotten.
My hot take is that having a limit on how many players you can vote for is stupid. If there are 15 hall of fame worthy players on the ballot then you should be able to vote for those 15 players.

Ross Youngs was such a great player. A 7 year prime with 30 WAR and a 137 OPS+, especially given his era and position.
Even if he wouldn’t be a deserving Hall of Famer statistically, Youngs certainly had a great career for himself.

Basketball is by far the best HoF, mainly because its not a HoF for one league. the NFL, MLB, and NHL are elitist, classist, spoiled dicks who play favorites and have obvious bias and no consistency. Basketball HoF measures the impact of players, not just in the NBA, but the global sport and its rich history. Vince Carter will be a Hall of Famer and most basketball fans would be ok with that. "Hall of very good" sells the whole thing short imo. Yes, very good players make it in more often than any other sport, but each on had a tangible impact on the sport, the culture, or the community.
A good example is Yao Ming only played 7 good seasons, but made the all star team in each, was the first foreign player picked number 1, and is an actual legend in China and inspired millions of kids to pick up a basketball.

Terrible comparison imo. A DH simply doesn't play defense at all, not hard to understand why a RF with the same ofensive production as a DH will be more valuable.

My cold take: Dusty Baker should be in the HOF because he "invented" the high five.
My potentially hot take: There needs to be a section in the hall of fame where the steroid era guys go as well as pete rose and joe jackson, etc,. that acknowledges they were some of the greatest to play the game but also the most human, who despite their great gifts also fell to temptation and were caught. Their numbers keep them in the same building as their peers but their actions prevent them from standing shoulder to shoulder with them.
Would be a good, if symbolic, message to send to young players. If you cheat,you may win, but your actions will never be forgotten.
