As a qualified mechanical and electrical tradesman, I am appalled at the lack off quality information on the internet. The information you provide is top class and people should be forced at gunpoint (just joking) to watch this video and therefore learn how to perform a brake job safely and correctly.
Finally a video that explains the issue I'm having with my A4! Spent hundreds of $$$ changing the motor and brake pads but not fixing the sound. Cheers from Malaysia.
Great work Dave. I'm a convertee to ceramic as of now! Never used copper in that area for reasons you've highlighted and it's astounding really how many still do. 👌🏻
Top man. Got exactly this squeak one of my cars - 2012 A4. I was expecting an issue with the parking brake actuator but, watching this, I'm hopeful it is just the pads. If it is the actuator, I see TRW now offer a rebuild kit though.
Learn something new every day and I thought I knew quite a lot about cars! My excuse for copper grease was simply ‘because I was told to once’ and have ever since. Not anymore though. Cheers Dave, nice work 🍻
So what I got out of it was when I change the brake pads, don’t do a half ass job, use proper grease(not copper lol) in the right locations after cleaning those areas, and insert fresh pads. Thanks for the video!
I have this squeek on my A6 rears, great video, im half way through changing the pads/discs and cleaning up the carrier arms, i hope this solves my squeek
I've used Pro Slip grease on sliders Dave, backs of pads and the carrier legs and clips. Different grease for each part. Good point about a full strip and rebuild, wire brush and new hardware, otherwise pointless doing it. Great video and excellent points.
@@davesterl just the contact points on the piston face, edges of the pad, and the area where it contacts the carrier legs. I'm not spreading it on like jam! 👍
Hi Dave, I have worked with a mechanic that would used a copper grease/engine oil mix. That stuff went everywhere. I use the same ceramic grease as you and have never had a problem. Cheers mate
Love it! Sorted this on mine 2day! Thought it was jus a cheap ebay elec motor on the caliper making the noise! Another issue off the list Cheers again 👍👍
It’s all the contaminates (salt, pad dust, road grit) sticking to the lubricant working to undermine its performance. Some well made points Dave. Enjoy Silverstone 👍
I have the same sound but it works. the computer check up saying (break motor) must I change the both motors? Or it’s okay to keep it like this with the sound ?
Technically.. you can do this job without VCDS or another OBD software that allows basic servicing functions - but you shouldn't. If your a DIY'r its well worth spending the money on a single car license with VCDS, roughly $200
@@wildatlanticcars8789 where can I get the vcds? I thought u jus had to buy the lead @ around £200 an then d/l the software for free? No? Would defo like to get it
Quick bit of info, I thought same as you that the ceramic is rubber safe for the sliders, I checked with granville direct and they advised it isn't and it will swell the rubbers. It's good stuff but gets absolutely everywhere !
I use red rubber grease on the sliders and ceramic grease on the pads and carrier. I’ve Never had a problem with ceramic grease. Granville sell the red rubber grease.
@@ianrimmer1968 yeah a good alternative. I now use MOLYKOTE® G-3407 Caliper Pin Grease, it's got good anti fretting properties that the other options don't have, best I have found so far for caliper pins, used by manufacturers and lasts really well.
All interesting stuff there Dave I hate copper grease don’t have it in the workshop anymore doubt if there’s any copper in most of the brands anyhow. Interesting fact about the VCDS I have and never realised it had the AMP draw function for the brake motors il be sure to check that out.
lol you hate copper slip on the back of the pads just as much as me . it also attracts all the brake dust and crap on the the copper slip . im of the opinion that on sintered bike pads it can melt in to the pad material

My a6 breaks have been speaking for months and this has really helped me nail what was wrong! So helpful! Thankyou!

My money would probably be on the pad backing coming apart Dave , lots of good info as always 👍
Aye same here Igor
I agree mate 👍

Thanks 👍
Thanks Dave enjoy your Vids

Why grease back of pads?

copper/oil mix sounds terrible. Looking forward to Monday
Me too mate
Do you happen to have a link to the brake pad set used in the video? :)

Hello dave -which front or rear pad? There isn't a quality mechanic in our area, I'll have to describe it to him.I'm sorry I don't have enough English
I have the same sound but it works. the computer check up saying (break motor) must I change the both motors? Or it’s okay to keep it like this with the sound ?
Is that squeking going to do any damage to the motors or anything?
I Did the same procedure you did (but kept the used brake pads) and still squeaks, are the break pads the reason? or what else should I check?
can you change your brake pads on a electronic parking without VCDS ,the old fashioned way by winding the piston in

The classic debate about copper grease, I am guilty of using this stuff for brakes in the 90s 😊.

Just love your curiosity.
Well done Dave, plenty of knowledge there if you’re thinking of starting a night school sign me up please 🔧
no bother lol
Mine is doing the exact same noise, its so anoying. Sadly i dont have the tools to do it, it had new pads and rotors few months ago
Hey, i tried that, it was good for 4 days, then i washed the car and it started to squeak again.. any help?
is that how it is suppose to sound at the end?
Yes!
Hi love your channel, out of interest do you sell the latest VCDS software and lead ?
Kind Regards
VCDS software is free. I do not sell the leads
So what was the fix for the squealing when applying the parking brake when stationary? Was it just throwing in new brake pads?
Watch the video

Very good video thanks!
New brake pads and hardware, still squeaky. I think it's the grease you used
Thanks a lot dave
Great video
Thanks for the visit
very nice video.
Motor ve balata değiştirmeye gerek var mı ? Yağlama yaparak sorunun çözüldüğü görüyorum.
Aynı sorun benim aracımda mevcut. Her usta farklı şeyler söylüyor. Bir tanesi motor değişecek bir tanesi kaliper değişecek. 😤 çözüm yok.
A vékony fékbetétek miatt nyikorog. A motornak nagyon ki kell jönnie és azért zajos.. Csak a fékbetéteket elég kicserélni és megszűnik a zaj.
Buen vídeo y bien explicado!
I say my customers that they don't have anyone at the factory applying copper grease when they built your car so clearly it shouldn't be there now
also i,m that guy that put copper grease everywhere but never done any damage to the brakes
Interesting. I have an A6 (C6) with that awful squeaking sound. I'll pull it apart and have a look. Cheers!
Another great video Dave, plenty still using copper slip in garages as their boss wont buy the good stuff , take care 💉💉👍👍
Cheers Mike and you
