As a lifelong Mac user, I’ve never had a PC, so my SteamDeck *IS* Gaming to me. I keep docked to my TV 24/7, and only occasionally use it in handheld mode
The reason for the Last of Us show being so close to the game is due to the creators also being a part of the production and script writing. Also some of the original voice cast was in it as well. The small changes they said were due to making it adaptable to TV.
I mostly use my Steam Deck docked for three purposes. One is when I'm updating games or installing games, because my dock is wired to the router. The second is when I'm playing my PS5 games and someone else is using the TV. In that case, I'll dock the SD and play on my 27" computer monitor using a PS5 controller paired to my SD. The last is when I'm doing some kind of system thing, like installing Chiaki, or almost anything for which I have to get into desktop mode, or use mouse and keyboard.
No i dont want another launcher on top of steam. It makes the experience worse. Look at EA and ubisoft singleplayer games on pc with their shitty launchers.
I feel you are missing out on the best part of the docked experience. Setup sunshine or parsec on your gaming pc and stream to the steam deck. It works so freaking well and if you go the extra mile and setup a virtual display diver, you can stream in any resolution and framerate you want (as long as your pc can run it). It’s a game changer for those who don’t want to be stuck behind a desk if thats where they work.
as pc gamer since Xbox one release I was young 12 never was hardcore I was balling on a budget I didn’t even get. A hdmi monitor till now and the steam deck got me back into gaming recently after a year and a half of not playing
I was an all games on switch person till like a couple years ago, I started buying most 3rd party games on either series s or my ROG Ally. I would love to do that again. I’m a Nintendo person at heart, and if the next switch is good enough to run games like the last one did 3 years ago, I think my other consoles would start collecting a lot of dust. Just in the waiting period for it now, and it’ll be a day one purchase no questions asked.
Im in that same boat I would buy big name titles on my series s or use game pass to play them and then I would game on the go with my switch but I’ve been gravitating away from them both and I have been looking more and more to the steam deck as my go to on the gaming device
1:26:12 Almost 80% of the time. It’s docked with a 1080 165hz monitor and 1tb external SSD, keyboard and mouse. It’s my “low end” PC. It’s replaced my consoles all except the Switch.
I really wish cross save would be a standard. There are quite a number of games I’m willing to repurchase on Steam for the Deck, that I already played on PS.
I gave up when the ps5 era released…I still own my big boss psp and 3 vita’s 😅, and my big ass digital library. I gravitated more towards Steam now, and my account is from 2009, as I get older, and with 4 children whom also game, I appreciate the way the digital games age.
Asus had the right idea with the egpu solution, but then screwed it up by going with a proprietary connector. Not to mention the cost is absurd for their egpu solution. As to oculink, it feels like that ship has sailed. TB5 is just around the corner and will out-perform the current oculink spec. Really, we need some type of ePCIe (sort of like what eSata was), that allows us to keep the full-bandwidth. I still think that mobile cpus are basically fast enough for the vast majority of tasks.
I agree about instilling confidence about digital ecosystem. But keep in mind, Wii was their 1st try and storefront was rented. Games bound to hardware back then. During Wii U/3DS era they switched to account based, and eShop imo is here to stay. I could be wrong but I think eShop is now their permanent digital storefront.
FFVII Remake is an indisputable 10/10, at least when looking at the core moments of the game. However, the main flaws brings it down to a 7 or perhaps 8/10... I wouldn't even say that pacing is the problem, but rather that the low-intensity parts of the game is deprived of meaningful content. Certain missions drag on forever to forcefully make the game longer, and although Midgar is such an fantastic distopian setting and playground to tell all sort of interesting side stories, the team just fails to harness ALL of that potential. Instead you are stuck with meaningless fetch quests and silly missions that don't really flesh out the amazing world they have created. I hope rebirth will do this justice. I hope for more "meaningful" content, since the set pieces are SO GOOD!
Fun episode, I really liked that it was longer :D Russ was talking about Horizon Forbidden West and man I wanna play series sometime. It looks so much fun.
Since I bought a gaming laptop and steamdeck I rarely bought any games on switch other than some exclusives anymore though indie games runs smooth the last one I bought is Sea of stars but when it comes to AA games it lacks the performance that I wanted, SteamDeck really gives me that 60fps performace in a handheld.
The lack of EGPU support is the only reason I haven't picked up a Steam Deck yet. And I couldn't agree more with Russ about Lenovo whiffing on oculink + Legion Go. First manufacturer to master the plug & play oculink function wins!
Wins your purchase? As far as general consumers I really don't think egpu's sell that well or are much of a priority to significantly push sales of a handheld. (Maybe if Valve or someone made something that was really sleek and seamless, while maintaining a good price/performance ratio it could be a high attach rate accessory...)
@@infasis yeah that's what I'm advocting for. Plug and play" meaning a more seamless experience than hacking together a rig like Phawx's, but not a proprietary all-in-one like Asus'. As an old PC gamer whose build is obsolete and has been very happy with the convenience of consoles, the main thing preventing me from pulling the trigger on a handheld platform is the lack of expandability when docked. It's competing with network/cloud streaming from my console which is excellent over WiFi. But once my handheld can deliver desktop level performance, it's not a secondary device anymore. It justifies the full price of a desktop gaming PC.
I think the Steam Deck is great for people who love all sorts of different games. But I do know there are some people out there that only play competitive FPS games, so a Steam Deck just wouldn't be useful to them, even though they think its a cool device. I love the Steam Deck, but I'm not really a multiplayer gamer so it works great for me
I, for one, accept our Valve overlords. I would love to hear about Carey's topic of suffocating the industry, and maybe bring back the discussions of trust in these different brands, storefronts, and hardware. Valve is certainly not perfect, and is a company, but seems to maintain trust and consumer interest more than their peers which is why PC gamers seem to defer to them.
Can you even imagine how angry the PS5 community would be if Sony did dedicate more time to PC in the State of Play? They’re in a tough position trying to keep their shareholders and console fans happy.
The question is, are those people just a loud minority or do they actually reflect PlayStation users at large? I can't imagine most people have this sort of unreasonable think to them
@@Thornskade Oh, I'm sure that's true. The Internet is, in general, skewed by the vocal minority. But they would make things really difficult for Sony, so I think they try to quietly move forward with their PC initiative without making it too obvious to the loud people who will rile up the Internet mob.
Btw, given Ive abandoned my PS5/XSX in favor of Switch/Steamdeck only (I need portability and I need gyro aiming, without both I just cant tolerate it anymore), Id really like to learn how set up an external GPU for docking Steamdeck to get high end graphics on TV. Would need to know what all to buy and that it would "just work" on my LG C1 OLED 4ktv. I desperately want to turn Steamdeck into Switch so both are hybrid.
What if Nintendo made a “switch cast” like a chromecast that runs switch online legacy games by itself but also had a seamless Wii U experience. It could almost be like the how the 8bitdo pro controller dongle dock works so you can still dock it but some games can cast 2nd screen interface undocked. Everyone loved that lag less feature about the Wii U and was upset to find out the switch lacked that dual screen feature. I really think they could revisit the Wii U for technical advancement but obviously they need to make it distinct from the original switch otherwise history will repeat.
I never represented myself or considered myself disabled(born with bone def. 1 hand 1 left simply put). Gaming is been a huge part of my life since Sega Saturn in Windows 98 PC but I will never go back to pre connectivity of today via Steam and Xbox rear paddles with games that allow the customization that allow someone like me to reprogram the buttons that they used to have to use their knee on every time. Remember, I don't know any different. I was born. with 6 total fingers. Full regular hand on the left and a thumb slash palm amalgamation that is. almost perfect for. controller capabilities.. I can't sit in my desk on my mouse and keyboard playing World of Warcraft for six hours a day like I used to when I was a kid if i had the time.. Mostly i try to get back into Controller when home , or worst Macro'd Logitek mouse-tkl keyboard.. I suppose it depends on what game you're playing. but I'm finding myself playing games via controller that I used to use mouse and keyboard. Oh well, I'm getting old. Thanks for the video guys. Keep it up. DeckG3NG out..
I’ve got insider info on the new PlayStation handheld & I’ve been waiting on them to announce it but it’s been pushed about a year, potentially more out from now. Nintendo has the new system ready but are working on software for the launch… will be 8-14 months from now for that as well. I’ve been holding out on the deck for the PS handheld, I’m about to just cave & purchase the steam deck & just get the PSH whenever in the future.
Decided im going to get a steam deck this year and ive been trying to find a reason not to get one but evertime someone talks about it, im still convinced to get it or their reasons dont dissuade me. I havent been a handheld fan since the gameboy advanced but newer tech has changed my mind and im even considering keeping an eye on the switch 2
Switch 2 should have DLSS so, that will be enough to generate a good image on 4k tvs. Even if its not "the absolute cutting edge graphics" itll be comparable to PS4-Pro, maybe even PS5 for 1st party. For most ppl, thats good enough. Certainly will be for me. For PC enthusiasts upgrading each yr milking every frame possible, Switch 2 isnt gonna offer that experience for you. But itll finally be a good image witb reasonable resolution and without all the framerate issues. Of course, thats a bonus. The system at its core, its appeal is doing all 3. Handheld, tabletop, and a reasobably good docked experience.
This is one of the most fun multiplayer games I've played in quite a while. Probably has something to do with the devs focusing on fun and literally banning politics.
Great pod & very good content, keep up the great work shortie , you to fan of deck, u Giant u, the rest of the gaming Elf's there to, awesome work all of you.
Sony sells TVs, audio systems, and all manner of other devices that hook up to _those_ devices. They're not going to sacrifice the Playstation platform itself just to get fully in bed with PC. SCE might want to make more PC games sure, it's "easy" to do but the parent company has a reason to keep the Playstation hardware profitable. Exclusives are exclusives for a reason. That said, while watching a TechDweeb video about putting Steam games on Portable drives, I thought what if you could put a PS5 game on a drive like you can now for PS4 to play on PS5 and have it actually be compatible with PC. Probably not anytime soon, but it might be a thing they consider eventually.
@ThePhawx I don't think MS will be dropping a handheld before Switch 2 in March 25. Def not Sony. Even if they did, earliest release would be Nov? Couple month head start? And they wouldn't be hybrid, or have a single exclusive system seller that's not a console game already. Nah, Switch 2 will be fine. I DO understand the inadequacies for 3rd party but I got my Switch OLED modchipped, and now it runs EVERY game in my library (three 1.5TB mSD full of games) at 720p locked 30 or 60 in handheld, thanks to ReverseNX outputting docked image handheld, and NX-Venom variant of sys-clk that overclocks my CPU up to 2100 (stock 1020 handheld), GPU to 1220 (stock 307/384 handheld) and MEM to 2200 (stock 1331 handheld). I still feel you can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig. So games like Witcher 3, Outer Worlds, Doom, etc, despite running stable 720p 30fps handheld, are still better on Deck due to low res textures and lower draw distance and pop in. But OTHER games are phenomenal. Harry Potter is comparable to Steam Deck now. MH Rise at 720p locked 30 handheld is comparable to Deck. Trials Rising now 720p and locked framerate (which is NOT able to run on Deck so this is huge!), countless games framerates fixed- Zelda TotK, Zelda Link's Awakening, Ni Ko Kuni 2, MH Stories 2, Ys IX, DQ Builders 2, Fire Emblem Warriors 3 Hopes, Bayonetta 3 (I run 720p locked 30 handheld but you can do locked 60, it'll just cost you battery and/or resolution), Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity, No More Heroes 3, Shin Megami Tensei V, all Trails of Cold Steel games and Trails Into Reverie, Bloodstained RotN, Xenoblade 2... the Switch Pro is everything I always wanted it to be. $100 on Etsy covers modchip, labor and shipping back to you, AND new thermal paste. Then just download NX-Venom all in one Overclock pack and extract to root of mSD, done and done. That's it!
Can also confirm I buy strictly Nintendo games on the Switch because the hardware is garbage, and I'd much rather play them on literally any other device. Hell, I don't even buy every Nintendo game... I save the graphically intense Nintendo games for piracy so I can play them at proper frame-rates and resolutions on my PC. Also, don't even think about shaming me for piracy. If I could buy Switch games and then dump them onto my PC, I would. Nintendo brought this on themselves.
Number 1 problem for playstation is charging to play online not everyone wants the ps plus and by raising the price on it there pushing players away it's that simple
ultimately it looks like the future of steam deck look promising. Soon all your need is a steam deck and a nintendo console in order to play everything.
I think if ps now/play was adapted as a way to download games and maintain a library for pc it would be a real contender for gamepass. Sony would do it right as long as they don’t continue to cram the rental system down your throat. They have a great infrastructure, they just need to adapt it to the market in a way that we actually want to use it. Sony is way too corporate to listen but I think they are starting to change that. The pc market is a great place to continue the Xbox war and innovate in ways Microsoft won’t.
I bought remake on PS4, never finished it. Bought it now for the deck, just finished it. Playing intermission now. I'm hopeful for the Sony news of less exclusives, maybe we'll have it on the deck by Summer (or Christmas?)
What would be the short term in pact and the long term impact of Valve releasing SteamOS for all PC handhelds and regular PC hardware? Would we be in a Brave New World?
By the time Sony puts its big AAA ports on PC they're generally on sale and considerably cheaper on PS5.. If your buying up Sony ports then your paying a premium and waiting longer
I think that it'll be very, very hard for Switch 2 to achieve similar / same success as Switch 1. When Switch 1 came, there was literally no competition. Nintendo re-invented handhelds. It showed people that YES, you will have amazing Nintendo exclusives BUT also you have huge list, hundreds of games that are indie games, fantastic pixel art, 2d games ready to be played, waiting in your pocket. That's actually the reason why I love my Switch Lite. It felt a bit like non-nintendo console ;) You could for example ignore all Nintendo games and still think that Switch is absolutely fantastic device because the amount of games is almost endless. But then Steam Deck came and I ... stopped buying Nintendo eShop games. Why ? Because all of these indie games are first released on PC, or Playstation. Also, very often you can buy them cheaper etc. So I don't play these games on Switch anymore. Then we have this syndrome of Non-Nintendo AAA games like Witcher 3. If there was no Ayaneo, Steam Deck, Asus Rog Ally then yeah everybody would be excited to have Switch 2 with improved graphic that will be kind of similar as PC, PS4. But now it is nothing new since any 7840U handheld can do it. And if xbox or sony releases their own, real handheld then i'm afraid switch 2 will be not for everybody, it'll be mainly for nintendo-freaks ;) It'll hard. Honestly, I would love to see totally new handheld, with something absolutely new, crazy etc. - 2 screens, 3d ;p you name it. I just thing that "more powerful" Switch 1 named as Switch 2 will be a failure. I mean, sure, it'll sell like 30, 40, 50 millions of copies but will it be ie. over 100 ? I don't think so.
Nintendo is pinned to a wall because by the time the switch 2 comes out there's going to be such a huge plethora of handhelds to choose from AMD based and powerful enough to just emulate it. Let alone the competition they have to muscle through. Right now I'm looking at PC forever since the Ally came out and never looking back. Those Sony ports are perfect because I stopped playing my PS4 library and I can now resume thanks to handheld PC and ports coming to it.
Omg I agree so much with you on ff7 remake. The beginning to middle of the game is so slow and boring! But right after the ghost train area it really picks up.
I sure hope so. I’m at the ghost train area right now, after playing a bit of and on for several months. It hasn’t hooked me hard enough to play it exclusively from beginning to end.
@@dewinter1411 Alright so i played a little more, and damn does it getting boring. So much padding in this game. I don't understand how people like it so much.
When you have an RTX 4080 Super and a 7800X3D, why would you even consider using a console. When I’m not streaming games from my PC to my Steam Deck OLED, I’m playing on my new AW 32” QD-OLED 4k 240HZ Monitor. The possibilities are endless when it comes to playing all my games to include my emulators. The freedom you have to do these things makes the console obsolete. Sony would not only save by not having to make newer consoles, but they would be able to put that money toward making even better games.
wait they never ended up touching on the xbox podcast lol, not like i super care that they did, but i was pretty sure they were gonna tease phawx that the verge did ask directly about the xbox handheld lol, ooh and that we now have direct acknowledgement from xbox that the windows handheld sucks and they are working on it, not just a leak from an internal competition from almost 2 years ago at this point
Day in date will never make sense for Sony single player because they lose 30% to Steam for people like me that own both platforms. Even one day, two days, a week would be better. For marketing spend, they could just say on Steam 30 days later and share all the same marketing. But if they do that, people like me will just sell their PS5 and wait it out. It’s bad for them in the long run even if that game has much better sales because they lose their console dominance. The sad truth is that they need to do have an exclusive store on PC that does day one, then do Steam later, but I hate that so much.
Switch will still sell fine. Even with the competition of the handheld PCs, Nintendo is still going to do fine with selling the Switch as long as they don't go crazy with it.
The goal is to get others, third parties, to sell their games on your platform and collect royalties without the risk of investing in making a AAA game. To do this you need your platform to have a very large user base and be attractive to those third parties. microsoft's strategy to achieve this is game pass and epic's strategy is to give games for free. If microsoft makes game pass accessible to other platforms it no longer serves that purpose. The exclusivity of games also serves to increase your user base so that when someone buys the fifa of the day they do it on your platform, receiving the corresponding royalties. Selling consoles at a loss serves exactly the same purpose. Not so much for first party games but yes for third party games.
@@monki_sudoyes proton can at times I’ve seen that but sometimes feral interactive is quicker to the draw for certain games but I mostly play strategy genre like total war and plenty of paradox titles
I hate the Epic Games Store so much I refuse to buy Kingdom Hearts on it even as a die-hard KH fan. I hate EGS more than I love KH, that is saying a LOT.
Well I don't need game pass on my deck anyway :D But seriously, I don't. I don't have an Xbox, I haven't even tried game pass so far, and I don't have that much time to play, plus I'm rarely playing the latest games, so yeah, I don't really need it. Even if it is a good deal, which it is in general, it would not be for my specific usecase. But yeah, it would have been nice for those who can utilize it better.
Guys, Switch 2 is 12 mo away AT MOST. You're in a bubble if you think Sony or MS is magically releasing a handheld before then, and even IF they did, you forget Vita? You forget Steamdeck hasn't even broke 5m? There's no demand for other handhelds. They're not gonna be in trouble. Switch 2 is out no longer than 12 months from now. Absolutely nothing is going to steal interest in extremely good looking and running multiplats. There's not gonna be any Sony handheld before then or anytime after. Same for Xbox. Even if there was, no detachable controllers or tabletop or dock or exclusives to sell it... it would be like another Steamdeck, sell 2-5 million to enthusiasts and that's that. Even if they ran multiplats amazing, once Switxh 2 is out it's gonna do the same thing, but with DLSS, lighter weight, 3 modes of play, gyro aiming, etc etc. Trust me guys, nothing will stop the Switch 2 train from gobbling to massive interest in 3rd party multiplats. No other console manufacturer is releasing a handheld before then, and even if they did, it would be lucky to compete with Steamdeck. Switch 2 demand for multiplats isn't gonna be impacted.
Rather than a launcher, why shouldn't Sony just open their own complete store front on PC? Also, FFVII Rebirth is said to be a 2-disk game in and of itself.
You realize the cost of doing that? Not to mention manpower to run it and handle the upkeep? Thats a massive venture compared to a launcher. I don’t want a launcher either, but that’s the more cost effective way for them to do it rather than making their own store.
I don't understand why the likes of Epic and GOG don't make a linux version of there launchers No need for them to develop their own hardware just exploit Valves hardware
@@ghost4realbitch yeah I honestly think that not even the developers were expecting this game to blow up like it did. My kind of people, people with low expectations.

SteamDeck will only win when USB power hanging off the top of the device isn’t a requirement for playing any demanding game. Until then, consoles like Switch will remain relevant. Pick up and go. No installs.

I really look forward to uploads 😁
Is everyone forgetting game pass is on PC?
Rather than Guitar Hero, the piano thing sounds more like Rocksmith, which connects to an actual guitar or bass and uses that as the controller.
Fun episode, I really liked that it was longer :D
Russ was talking about Horizon Forbidden West and man I wanna play series sometime.
It looks so much fun.
Yes you can party with ps5 players
With the cross-save idea, it's not just Sony, but Microsoft as well. Really, it should be industry standard at this point for multiplatform games
If the dock had thunderbolt 4 and a built in eGPU, I would buy it as an upgrade.
Road to the Silver Play Button! Woo! 🤘🏽😁
You’ll get it, this year, Bill. Watch.
Really having a hard time between Oled and Legion. Maybe the price is the only factor but I love how the Deck looks more than any other.
You can switch "facial interfaces" so you can share a quest without sharing face juices!
I can hear someone’s iPhone alarm going off in the background
Got put onto this Podcast by Russ from RetroGameCorps and I stayed for the awesome content. Love the podcast gents!
Great video! I am ready to pull the trigger on a 512gb oled Steam Deck, but would you have a screen protector to recommend?
I only party with my friends on helldivers 2. I'm on PC and the other 2 are on PS5. Been doing that since release
Most of the people I know that own a PS console are casuals, and PC players. The casuals play games like FIFA, Madden and COD.
I love the content!! Keep up the great work guys!!
Love the content man! Keep it up 😅
I bought remake on PS4, never finished it. Bought it now for the deck, just finished it. Playing intermission now. I'm hopeful for the Sony news of less exclusives, maybe we'll have it on the deck by Summer (or Christmas?)
we are talking about handheld...no point in having external gpu and using it as a normal console...then just buy the ps5 or whatever
What would be the short term in pact and the long term impact of Valve releasing SteamOS for all PC handhelds and regular PC hardware?
Would we be in a Brave New World?
I use my steam deck OLED for all the PS5 games that I want to play
By the time Sony puts its big AAA ports on PC they're generally on sale and considerably cheaper on PS5..
If your buying up Sony ports then your paying a premium and waiting longer
Cool VR talk.
It felt a bit like non-nintendo console ;)
You could for example ignore all Nintendo games and still think that Switch is absolutely fantastic device because the amount of games is almost endless.
Chess is already 3 dimensional, what you mean to say is 4 dimensional or 4-D chess.
Sony would not only save by not having to make newer consoles, but they would be able to put that money toward making even better games.
really strong episode again. This is must a watch podcast.
wait they never ended up touching on the xbox podcast lol, not like i super care that they did, but i was pretty sure they were gonna tease phawx that the verge did ask directly about the xbox handheld lol, ooh and that we now have direct acknowledgement from xbox that the windows handheld sucks and they are working on it, not just a leak from an internal competition from almost 2 years ago at this point
This always makes my day so much better, thank you..
How did someone let an alarm go off for 45 minutes?
How did nobody else in the comment section mention this?
helldivers 2 is still struggling , but when they get it in order , boy its a game to compete with , we need pvp though
Vavle really needs to bring in feral interactive they do a lot of ports to linux they can really do some good work for the steam deck I think
@@monki_sudoyes proton can at times I’ve seen that but sometimes feral interactive is quicker to the draw for certain games but I mostly play strategy genre like total war and plenty of paradox titles
You can't upgrade your laptop but he can upgrade his pc so your laptop will just be a paper weight in a few years.
Awesome show guys
I hate the Epic Games Store so much I refuse to buy Kingdom Hearts on it even as a die-hard KH fan.
I hate EGS more than I love KH, that is saying a LOT.
Street Fighter is no longer exclusive to PlayStation. That was my only Street Fighter V.
uh I just found last of us 2 to be pretty fun, like the dodging was cool and the autocover and using the motion controls.
Well I don't need game pass on my deck anyway :D
But seriously, I don't.
GTA 5 didn’t continue to sell because its single player.. it’s because of online
Valve needs to make a console. I will buy it day one.
@@dewinter1411 You speak as if Sony doesn't already own and operate a store front...
You sign into your Sony account with hell divers 2 on pc. So he shouldn’t have 2 accounts if he has it for ps5 and pc.
I don't understand why the likes of Epic and GOG don't make a linux version of there launchers
No need for them to develop their own hardware just exploit Valves hardware
Helldivers 2 needs cross save progression. They're missing out on another 50 bucks from me.
right, i bought on steam to play on my deck when im out of state, but when im home id love to play on my PS5
@@ghost4realbitch yeah I honestly think that not even the developers were expecting this game to blow up like it did. My kind of people, people with low expectations.
I really enjoy the show its really great just like my steam deck I love valve and steam pc gaming is the best
Platform exclusives are bad for everyone, including the platforms that do the exclusive releases. It should just not be a thing at all.
@ThePhawx you're out of your mind if you think PC gamers want another launcher, just so you have a cute way to look at your virtual trophies on PlayStation.
SteamDeck will only win when USB power hanging off the top of the device isn’t a requirement for playing any demanding game.
Until then, consoles like Switch will remain relevant. Pick up and go. No installs.
nice session nerds :p
