Tank Davis | Full Boxing Style Breakdown

- Gervonta “Tank” Davis is an undefeated world champion who boasts insane power along with nuanced, refined boxing. While the Philly Shell style lead to a lot of comparisons between him and Floyd Mayweather, the way he sneakily changes stances from southpaw to orthodox to set up his left hand is reminiscent of how Mike Tyson used to do the same, only in reverse.

My dream fight right now is Tank vs Stevenson. How do you guys think that would play out?
TANK ALL THE WAY!
I’m leaning Shakur, but Gervonta can start outpointing him with power shots early and drag him into a slugfest. Gervonta can also frustrate Shakur with his distance control. Shakur will have to stalk him successfully and exploit Gervonta’s MANY openings while remaining defensively responsible. Also, Shakur is the handsome crowd pleaser so Gervonta may have to knock him out-easier said than done.
If that fight happens and it goes 12, Shakur on points, or Tank Kos him, that's the only 2 ways that fight goes, just my take on it, good vid mate cheers Yogi 👍
Stevenson, Tank has a good puncher's chance though. Shakur's long guard and otherworldly ability to judge distance is going to give Tank massive problems, as is the size advantage with the superior infighting skill. Tank's still an incredible athlete with high fight IQ though so good chance he does something clever and catches Shakur at mid range with a shot, but at long and close range, huge disadvantage. If it goes 12 it's a UD for Shakur, easy.
A dream fight indeed. Both are highly skilled fighters who know the ins and outs of the sport. Shakur has a great understanding of distance but I don't see that nullifying Tank's power so I'm taking Tank.
I love the way he combines his athletic ability and power along with his technique and IQ, he has what it takes to be a generational type of fighter.
Along with naoya inoue
From the three Gervonta fights i saw, he takes his time boxing and then can explode and land hard shots on their opponents. This will be a very interesting video
His boxing is criminally underrated.
@@semyaza555 really its criminally overrated
When Tank throws a punch while stepping in and launching off his back foot it reminds me of the leaping left hook that Inoue used to knock Fulton to the canvas.
It's exactly the same.
Tank is a complete boxer. This video is a long time coming. Salute.
carefully managed career by money may

Being in a lower weight class, while not being a heavyweight and having such knockout power and a unbelievable ko win ratio record, tank is the real deal and anyone doubting is living in a fantasy
Facts
Tank style is not only exciting to watch on a visual standpoint but also for the sweet science . That man is brilliant in there finding openings minimizing his opponents offense and just picking his shots beautifully . My favorite fighter since Floyd
Tank Davis is a genius pro boxer... mixing different styles of boxing like the philly shell, slugger, sugar ray Leonard style, peekaboo mike tyson style and many others
Please breakdown Evander "The Real Deal" Holyfield's gamelan for Tyson. You'd be perfect guy because you offer an unbiased insight and you'd a great job explaining the circumstances surrounding that fight.

Can you make more breakdowns of Gervanta Davis boxing style and techniques
Thumbnail goes hard.
Excellent work as always, Good Sir! When Gervonta dips low you never know if he’s going to come up on the left side like Joe Frazier or on the right side like Mike Tyson! 😂
Does he have the same strength in both hands!!
No safety on that glock.
Another fantastic video, thank you so much!
Been waiting for a video on Tank, excellent breakdown
I got nothing but love for my hometown. Go Tank! Keep us proud!
now THAT'S a thumbnail by god
I’ve been waiting for this exact video for months now. U the best in the youtube fighting world. Thx
Damn good piece, david. Really well done. Thanks
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Always appreciate your content bro!
Just wanted to give you props for the thumbnails for these videos, you really capture the essence of each fighter in an almost mythological sense 😂 good job man
Thank you for making a video on Davis
I loved your allusion to RJJ regarding his unstuck rear foot/fear punch. As soon as you pointed that out, I remembered either you or Lee Wylie pointed out that Roy wpuld throw his rear hand via leap into a squares stance that smothered counters to one, and he'd anticipate that then duck and roll away.
Leaving a comment and like, because I appreciate your work on that well made vid👌
This was bad ass. Well done~

Been waiting to see this
Thanks as usual.
Can't stand folks always underestimating Tanks skill especially technical traits. Thanks for the vid 💯
Also apparently (as mentioned by his coach Calvin) he was sorta molded after Aaron Pryor as well💯. Mike Tyson even commented how he resembled Pryor him without knowing the previous info😮
That's really interesting! I've never studied Pryor extensively or maybe I would have come to the same conclusion. Probably wouldn't have gotten as many clicks though lol
@@TheModernMartialArtist I think people overlook Tank’s technical skills as far as being able to box really well and having great movement when he uses it.
Tank is a special talent no doubt with incredible Tyson like type of power and great boxing ability, but my only issue with Tank is his weak resume. He has beaten some good fighters that are considered big dangerous punchers like Ryan Garcia, Mario Barrios, Leo Santa Cruz, Rolly, and Issac Cruz.
But those guys that he beat are not elite in terms of skill level. I really don’t know at this point how good Tank truly is until I see him face more elite competition like a Teo, Shakur, Haney, Loma, or even a Frank Martin level fighter.
Its Sad that Tanks alredy talkin bout retiring and completely giving up on Boxing and making money other ways. Maybe he knows he'll never B redy for that 1st place Spot@135 or 140

It's about time you review The Tank.
I betchu if tank and many other fighters watched the videos u made of them, they’d be overjoyed.

Great vid and insight
Can you cover Chocolatito Gonzalez and the other fighters from the golden era of Super Flyweight? Juan Francisco Estrada and Srisaket Sor Rungvisai are also two of the most skilled fighters to ever live. It would also be amazing if you covered some of the more overlooked Japanese greats in the lower weight classes. Kenshiro Teraji, Kazuto Ioka and Kosei Tanaka don't get enough love really, and Junto Nakatani may be on the rise as well. Hiroto Kyoguchi has had a great career and hopefully can come back from the loss to Teraji.
Awesome video 🎉🎉🎉
These thumbnails are getting more and more insane and I love it
I wouldnt say reign SUPREME! But he is definitely one of the most skilled guys in boxing right now. But until he fights Loma, Haney, Shakur, or hell even go up and fight Teo, i cant really say how good he is. As much as the garcia fight was insane in terms of shaking up the modern boxing game, it wasn’t the most skillful opponent for tank, thats for sure. Love tank, but he has more to prove, id love to see him fight any of the top lightweights rn.
Yeah honestly, Ryan Garcia isn't that good. Ik some people are just gonna say that after the fact, but the guy is a great athlete with limited boxing skill; Tank is a great athlete with a very good all around skillset.
Those boys don't want to fight Tank. Shakur can box but has no POWER. Tank cam also box. Tank WILL hit him. What will he do when he feels that power? 💤🛌 All it takes is ONE punch. Haney will get slept💤, also has no power. Loma would be interesting, but Loma has no belts.
He needs to fight against top contenders ,he hasn't fought hard fighters so you can see his total skillset
@@NeverGoFullRetard415 well, as much as I’d like to agree. I can’t. I can see Shakur, Haney, and Loma outworking and outmaneuvering tank; although tank is one of the most highly skilled boxers in the world, he is in a division of killers. They may not have the most power, but most of them have enough. The way i see it, he had trouble against Pitbull cruz, and Pitbull imo gets mollywhopped (not knocked out tho) by most other top lightweights like shakur loma and haney. I love tank, but he’s still unproven. Ryan garcia had the footwork of a little girl in their fight and was loading up on his punches more than a wannabe thug in a street fight, of course tank was gonna win. Tank needs to prove himself.
@@ericbaira-milos4717 anyone can look good against mid-tier fighters. Only very very very few can look good against the elite. Not even haney can and he’s one of the most talented fighters right now. Roy Jones is a phenomenal example and probably the best example in all of sporting history of making Championship Caliber fighters and hall of famers look like children. Right now I cant see anyone in the lightweight division doing that, especially not davis considering he’s still unproven at the age of like 28 or 29 or something
Great video you break it down to a science tank is a special fighter
Great breakdown 💯💯💯
Sound 👍🥊
Hello david. I'm always eager to watch your videos when a new one comes out.
Please do a break down on Chingiz Allazov. He's a really good kickboxer who has just beaten Superbon and Marat Girgorian. In my opinion, he's better than Giorgio Petrosyan *Right now*. I'm really looking forward to that breakdown if you would be willing to make a video about it.
Tank is a once is a lifetime athlete.
not even close. Prisoner of the moment hypebole
He does have exceptional athleticism, but he has enough flaws as a boxer for him to be beatable by top level opponents. But even in those fights he has a great puncher's chance.
@@fablo7830You’re underrating his skills, he’s not just a puncher, it’s ring IQ and understand
@@fablo7830who's beating Tank? Definitely not lomachencko or a "prime" lomachencko not to mention tank is pretty old himself. Seriously who tf is beating Davis?

This guy is too good to not currently be a world champion
Nice of you doing Tank Davis :). He deserve it. Please also do (younger generation) boxer like Inoue, Devin Haney etc etc whenver you can or have the time :).
Inoue is 30, Tank is 28.
Theblkwolverine, you beat me to it.
@@theblkwolverine1570 Yes but what i mean its mostly not going for golden or silver era of boxer instead of "younger generation." That still active or in their prime. Devin haney, Davis and inoue is still in their prime.
Inoue is in the back half of his career pushing his limits now, it's just nobody pays attention to the baby weight classes.
Very unique Southpaw style.. suoerb breakdown thankx
Love watching Tank box
The most eccentric combination ever, the most exciting aggressive heavyweight puncher ever in Tyson combined with the most boring but defensively astute fighter ever in Mayweather to make Tank Davis
People who think Mayweather's style is "boring" are casuals. You don't understand how hard it is to be as good as he was defensively and as accurate at the same time.
@@SojuNinja compared to tyson he is boring
I really like this man’s style. 🐲🐲
0:59 the prick-force is strong with this one
The thumbnail is fu*cking amazing 😂
love davis dude, underneath his still humble as an olympian
You gotta do Inoue next
Finally the tank
Finally the Tank
Finally I suggested this
To master aggression in boxing you have to treat it like a switch.
If you keep that switch on full time your turning off the “chess mind”required to find your openings and will ultimately gas out (particularly as you age). To go the full 12 rounds with peak mental clarity you have to be relaxed as much as possible, always calculating and thinking ahead. Tanks ability to switch between aggression and relaxed is what makes him so great and his highlights so satisfying to watch, haha (Prince Nassem is another example of this).
Tank could be the greatest boxer on the planet, but sadly because of the lacklustre matchmaking and the general avoidance of any top fighters, we still can’t say how good he really is?
When’s he gonna step up or will he still be fighting people no one is interested in for baby belts in two, three, four years time?
Yeah it's all lackluster matchmaking and tank is not ducking
@ronin3635 OP literally said, "general avoidance of any top fighters."
Yeah, talent wise he's a pfp fighter. But he shouldn't be on any pfp list purely because he's doing circus fights for fake belts, rather than fighting world class opponents. Isaac Cruz is the best guy he's faced in 6 fucking years.
@@fablo7830 Yuuup. I dont know how is this guy in that kind of list without even won a world title yet. He is going down and up in weight to fight, but not challenging the top guys of his division, and fighting for regular belts. Yet his presented as a "3 division world champion" when in reality he isnt that.
@@gilbertluna6802He is a 3 division champion because he actually did win those belts. He won belts at 130,135 and 140. Whether they were major champions or not he still won them.
Nice break down. I am surprised you didn't really use much footage from the Garcia fight.
We need one for isaac Cruz now
He's from my city, and yeah kid is different
He has one of the rarest and best pull counter uppercuts in boxing. Almost NO ONE can ever hope to land those with regularity. For most thats a once in a lifetime shot.
Just skilled and smart application of power.
Yes Davis is indeed a tank. But you, sir, make prime documentaries with great sentence structure.
Please do breakdown of Devin the dream Haney I’m begging you
The front leg strength he shows when he evade punches right after he dive in with hard punches with his own. It's a nightmare to fight a guy swing hard at you and you can't punish them for it
I really want him to fight Haney for the Undisputed.
Haney don't have no belts, he's been stripped or dropped the belts because he has moved up to 140, but I would love to see Tank pulverise Haney
@@brettstewart8765You do NOT know wtf you are talking about. For 1 being stripped or dropping belts are not the same thing so saying OR while explaining reveals you are unknowledgeable. Moving up or down is not a place or destination to check in to where you dont move. He is the IBF WBO WBA Champion of 135 STILL TO this day. Maybe reading would help your brain understand more. Check the fight organizations pages. He simply used his championship status for tje WBC to fight the bigger and harder punching KO artist in Regis Prograis who is considered #1 at 140 lbs and is the 140 WBC Super Champion. Haney is the 135 WBC Champion in recess to go fight a 140 fight. He has all his Hardware for 135. And Davis has been HANEY MANDATORY with his baby belt for over a year now since Haney beat Kambosas the first time. Your Tinky doesnt push for his mandatory for a reason. Even his uncle Ellerbe said if the organization try to push Davis to fight Haney that they will relinquish his baby belt. 😂 But you man fans dont speak on that though 👀🤫 Davis isnt fighting ANY Elite black fighter. Ever. No one at 130-135-140 has a better resume than Haney and Loma. Davis never held the super belt at 135. AND WONT ACTIVATE HIS MANDO TO FIGHT HANEY either. Haney is a true warrior that contiues to fight the best. Ever since he became champion at 20 years old. 8 world title figths. 3 undisputed bouts. 5 world champuons beaten. Now seeking to Do it again at 140 against tougher opposition and larger opponents. Respect

You should do a break down video on tyrell biggs boxing style.
What’s the name of the Song playing at 6:55?
Please respond if you know it
He reminds me of Aaron Pryor in all honesty. Could you do a breakdown on Bernard Hopkins?
David, I have to be honest - this went a little too fast for me. It was really complex and I couldn't keep track of it all. The ideas seemed really cool but maybe for the next video - if it's this high tech - you could slow it down a bit or give a few more examples/ways of explaining per technique. Still a massive fan of the channel!
Im glad hes managed to stay out of trouble for awhile. With the way his career is going hes a going to be a first ballot hall of famer.
I really hope that Tank doesn't make it into the Boxing Hall of Fame because the man is nearly 30 and has accomplished basically nothing in the sport. He fights weak opposition and doesn't even have a world championship to his name right now. It's too bad that he seems to have all this talent and potential, but his team won't let him take any risks to truly solidify his legacy. His best win was Pedraza, and that was 6 years ago.
@@sirmuffincat6630 you realize his career is probably far from over right? Dude hasn't even hit his 30s yet. Saying you hope he doesn't make it in based on now is silly.
@XTWDeadShot okay that's nice speculation and all, but that doesn't change the fact that there are other boxers similar in age to him that have accomplished way more in the sport than he has. You can say "well in the future, he might do (x) or (y)," but that's mere speculation. Fact is, he's fought nobody as of right now, and time is running out. Tank and his team need to make a change because right now, they only care about making the most money possible from the easiest fights. Real waste of genuine talent.
@XTWDeadShot and btw you said "with the way his career is going he'll be a first ballot hall of famer" which is where I took issue. The way his career is going is nowhere. He's not fighting any of the top guys at 135. His last fight was a catchweight against a guy who belonged in a higher division ffs. He even put in a rehydration clause. Tank and his team have shown zero interest in fighting any elite fighters, and it seems like they never will. THAT is why he shouldn't go into the hall of fame.
Honestly wish Davis would go fight Shakur and Haney, people saying he’s ducking them (Even I sorta believe it) even though I feel like Tank would beat them.
I honestly never heard of Tank Davis until I saw him in action for the first time when he recently stopped & silenced cocky pretty boy Ryan Garcia this year. I gotta see more of Tank's fights, the guy looks amazing in the ring.

Crazy to see such a diverse and adaptable southpaw. Not sure about now, but back when I was an amateur boxer southpaws were all vanilla and never threw much more than a 1-2.
The peeka-shell
Do Gerald McClellan’s style pls
Yes my favorite boxer 😊
He's acc a smart boxer and thats why he's winning adding in with his style of explosive counter punching and quick pace
Leading with a rear uppercut is risky, and can be catastrophic. It helps being a Southpaw, but reminds me of Buster Douglas vs. Evander Holyfield.
Most people completely overlook how good tank actually is. Much like Mike Tyson. People think he just hits hard. Footwork and skill is what gets him close enough to be able to land those bombs. I want to seem tank vs Loma.
Question what weight division is he a world champion??
The thumbnail looks like a Baki Hanma punch lol
