You could argue its risky as the video suggests, but there's a reason he was called one of, if not the most capable defensive fighter of all time. The philly shell is a defensive stance, specifically how Floyd use it. Its the reason why its hard to hit Floyd. The philly shell makes him a smaller target and you just turn your lead arm to block or slip incoming punches. You forgot the video's disclaimer from the start. Its smart for the creator to argue and title the video as a "brave" style due to, as you mention, people calling Floyd a "coward". This way of presenting him would generate a lot of clicks and comments due to having discussions like what I'm doing right now.

Also the Philly shell defence that Mayweather used is a very risky defence, so that also adds to the braveness of Mayweather. It relies heavily on quick reflexes, and if you lack those, then you get caught. That's why you see many boxers today that try to copy that Philly shell defence get hurt, because they either lack countles hours of practise with it or lack reflexes. Floyd has been practicing boxing before he could even walk, so you know he knows the game very well and has practised everything over and over again. A true defensive master of boxing

@@tee-roni420 What no. That's delusional. I'm a Pacquiao fan but I know how much he struggled landing effective shots on Floyd. To the point that he have to be creative just to land some of those shots. And he did not landed them when Floyd's philly is up. One of the two shots that caught Floyd was an overhand shot which surprised even Floyd because he did not expect Pacman to punch while facing down. Floyd was pivoting to exit during that point but he got caught anyways. The most effective one was a counter punch. And Pacquiao has to really up his speed this time because of the tiny time frame that Floyd is open. He parried Floyd's shot and before he could move back, Pacquiao quickly launches his killer left, which hit Floyd to the point of him shelling up with his back against the ropes. And yeah Floyd is basically striding when backing out of range because Pacquiao was also doubling his reach by dive bombing Floyd with his punches. Hence the infamous "run" tactic.

Very good, unbiased breakdown. I don't see running away, what I see is moving back to setup counters or traps and backing off to reset. Kinda like when playing a video game like Elden Ring or Monster Hunter World. You don't just attack the bosses head on, you need to move away most of the time to change tactics or lure them to a trap. Running away would mean never coming back to attack the opponent. And the shoulder roll stance is always risky for lesser skilled boxers. Look at Broner and Berto doing the technique, they get tagged easily because they're not on the same level and do not have the reflexes like Floyd does.

    Nice video.
It feels like anyone fighting Mayweather needed 5+ separate strategies in their pocket going into the bout, _and_ they needed to chop and change to avoid getting countered. It's almost like the worst thing you could do was spend your most effective techniques/combos on him repeatedly, as he downloaded, analysed and overcame his opponents' best weapons inside a round or two, then nullified them.
It's extremely impressive that fighters and their coaches prepared a full game plan going in, and have countless hours in the gym to drill it, and Mayweather was able to basically turn it against them on the hoof. I've seen so many clips of him losing the first couple of rounds and then absolutely dismantling his opponent for the rest of the bout to the point where he makes them look like amateurs. One round his opponents are a few points up and landing telling shots and the next, he flips a switch and they can't really touch him. That's crazy and extremely demoralising to fight against.
To put it this in context, there are countless rematch fights where boxers have several months to go away, figure out why they lost the first bout, make adjustments and still don't come close to winning the second fight. FMJ was able to master this process inside a few _rounds_, all while someone was trying to punch him in the face repeatedly.
Love him or loath him, the man's a genius.

People who complain about Mayweather ducking have no clue. Was he more selective in his fights when he was in his late 30's? Sure. That's because he was in his *late 30's*. Where is it writen that he's got to accept every matchup that's offered? Floyd didn't run the sanctioning bodies, he doesn't choose who the mandatory challengers were.
Rocky Marciano retired at age 32. Floyd was fighting his third bout against Maidana at age 37, when his opponent was 31. He beat aged 23 Canelo when he was he was 36, what fuck do you want? Sure, his fight against Paquiao waited a long time, it wasn't up to him to make Manny a mandatory challenger for his belts. And how do you put together the math that Pacquiao fighting an older Mayweather at age 36 is a *disadvantage* to the younger man?

Question 🤔 did you yourself have much experience boxing? Or what is it that enables you to see the art so deeply analytically and in such depth detail? I have a certain sport of my own where I'm similarly very analytical of more so than anyone I've ever known of the hundreds of people who I've met and seen competed in the sport.

Floyd never went to the true corner. He’d always post up one or two steps from the corner to give himself an out on both sides. That’s composure and mastering every inch of the squared circle

I've said he had more power than h gets credit for. His skills, mobility, and ring IQ had to have fighters second guessing the entire match. And those few times he did let his hands go were that much more memorable because of the rarity.

He doesn’t run, that’s just a code word they like to use for “stand still so I can hit you “ . Floyd literally stood in front of Canelo , and even laid on the ropes when he didn’t have to, and made Canelo miss over and over while countering . Best of his era

He was a spectacular puncher before the bones in his hands turned into glass. Pretty Boy was a ferocious predator. He changed his style out of necessity. When his hands were sound he was just as vicious as Duran or Tyson
