Southpaw Footwork, Tricks and Secrets Explained In Depth - Full Boxing Breakdown

- Southpaw fighters are a crazy bunch. Would you go into a battle with no shield if it meant your opponent didn't get a shield as well? These sinister tactics are used by the likes of Pacman, Crawford, Hagler, Lomachenko, Whitaker, and Usyk, who used these southpaw patterns to dominate and impress. Many people misunderstand footwork to simply mean how a fighter should move, but really, it is more like moving chess pieces around the board.

You are incorect. Southpaw outside right hand opponents lead foot is 100% inherently better.
The Right-handed South Paw! Those aren't jabs, they are right straights! If you know, you know.
Can you please make a video on what to do about evading the overhand right as a southpaw
@@marquisechapman1391 Honestly the two most effective ways are the most dangerous lol You can intercept with a tight cross or weave to your left under it, setting up a counter. But a cover block or stepping back in a high guard will still work if you have accurate timing. Check out the first four fights between Manny and Marquez. Pacman keeps getting caught with overhands, then starts using a step back high guard instead and that works well. But he doesn't use it all the time and when he tries to pull and long block or roll he keeps getting caught. You can also step in to smother depending on your style. If all that fails use a karate x block! lol jk.
Pro - experience with odd angles
Con - having lead foot stepped on constantly
As a Southpaw, I appreciate you putting this all in 1 video. Now to watch this video 50 times, to help me better my Fighting!
Yes, but also now everyone knows our secrets :((
Same bro
Me too. As a southpaw, all advice helps
Same
@@MissManslayerI’m southpaw by nature however I can get in any stance. I don’t care if they know our “secrets”.
the way pacman turns with his punches is a thing of beauty
Its more common nowadays to found southpaws than it was decades ago which adds more flavor to boxing. Tho I was surprised as a natural lefty (Like I write with my left, not just for boxing) that the southpaw stance is used by more right handers than left handers.
Crawford, Hagler, Shakur Stevenson, Pac man, Lomachenko, etc all write with their right hand (at least in every photo I’ve seen them sign).
Actual southpaws who write with their left are Usyk, Whittaker, and Tank Davis
I'm a lefty but write with my right hand because it's considered bad luck in my country to use you left, maybe they are in a similar situation?
@@carlossssssss5492I’m not a fighter, haven’t taken a single class so I’m probably wrong, but I think for the majority of the names the op posted it’s simply cuz they want their power hand in front. Haggler was a special case tho, I believe it’s something like him being naturally ambidextrous and couldn’t get fights as a southpaw so he switched to orthodox then switched back later in his career
@@carlossssssss5492 i think it’s mostly cause most people are naturally right handed. southpaw stance used to be used for guys that were left handed but has since been adopted as well by right handers
@@KingJinzo2125 Manny is also naturally ambidextrous, actually he’s more heavy handed in his left. Most of his KOs are by his left. He’s an odd one tho, since most right handed southpaws I’ve seen try to go for KOs with their left such as Crawford
I write with my left hand but am absolutely right handed in pretty much every other aspect, writing with one hand doesn’t make you a right or lefty, hell the same can be said for boxing orthodox or southpaw.
I was born in 1970, a time when kids who were lefty’s were often switched in schools. I’m right handed, but fight as a Southpaw. I used to dominate my friends when boxing. I would switch instinctively. As I matured I started training both. Good video.
Hagler was a good switch fighter. Southpaw to Orthodox. It made fighters feel weird with the sudden change in stance.

The Modern Martial Artist, You're so talented! I had to hit the like button!
Keeping the outside foot position in an open stance is especially important when sweeps and leg kicks are factored in. In karate, a person who steps forward and jabs on in the inside is susceptible to a foot sweep and take down.
Looking forward to that video on switch hitters! Keep it up. This channel is great.
I love this. Video on switch hitters would definiteky be great as well and I would really love to see videos on different guard types too.
bought footwork wins fights highly recommended
Loving these deeper breakdowns! Looking forward to seeing more Christian.
I'm a switch fighter, so I can't wait for the next video!
🤣😉
I was similar to Manny Pacquiao when I was a teenager. He’s only a year older than I am. But! Let’s say we were both 14 at the time.
I still outweighed him by 30 lbs. my footwork was better and like him I had speed and power in both hands.
What he did after we both turned 18 is phenomenal!
I didn’t continue my training and I started to focus on other things at that time.
That’s why he’s a living legend and I’m just a single a father roughing his way through life
Right handed southpaws stand up ❤

The beauty of "Southpaw"!
Good content! The late great Marvelous Hagler is my favorite middleweight fighter all time. Rest In Paradise Marvelous Hagler 🕊️🙏🏿🙏🏿
South paw is probably one of the annoying stances to fight. Even South paws hate fighting South paws.
so true
Not true at all , as a south paw i can say its much easier to fight a fellow southpaw , for the reason mentioned in the beginning of the video which is THE JAB
@@mhdjnan3010 true i fighting orthodox is more annoying
I'm a southpaw and I'll do anything to not fight an actual southpaw. But I love when orthodox turn southpaw because you can piece them up
Great video, I'm planning on getting in a boxing gym this year & work on my footwork more. Love your videos 🥊
Southpaw all day baby
This was such an awesome video for me. Thank you!!!
Subscribed . Can’t wait to watch the switch hitter video
Great Video.
Thank you for the video, as a southpaw it was always hard being taught by coaches that were right-handed and just didn't understand that their idea of angles wasn't good for me.
Pretty much had to teach myself, how to do normal techniques in a southpaw way.
Great stuff.
Thanks for this help really appreciated
Great breakdown! Keep combat fluid, like water.
I want a complete boxing footwork videos, structured like this one
I like this new use of the arrows!
that's great man, thanks
Thank you for the video iam a southpaw kickboxer i think i would do some of the tactics you talked about here in this video
CONAN ! What's best in LIFE😁0:0:35
I’m an Orthodox that switched to Southpaw and feel so much better in Southpaw now. Marvelous is my favorite boxer, using his leaping footwork and that stance switch turn are my favorite ways to catch people. Can’t wait to see the switch hitter video. Place I tend to get caught the most has been in the pocket with over hands, or jabs that are just timed better than mine. Still want to learn more about using my lead foot in the center instead taking the outside to land my rear hand so often.
looking forward to the switch hitter video!
Inside angle is actually great to attack with jab..... but also great for counter left
Boxers like Josh Taylor, Errol jr,Tank use this very well
If someone taken deep inside angle and able to make the rival miss thier power hand short they can catch the rival off guard
Slip cross or duck under upper cut can do great damage
David. I know that is not been easy as of late… but your April’s fool content is outstanding and we. Wouldn’t mind if it comes out in May… 🙏 pleas
People forget that southpaw tactics are the exact same as orthodox you just flip the side orientation...I wish more people embraced southpaw...I trained in a lot of arts but I credit TKD for making me so used to switching stance but I use JKD style to do it...but being able to fight in both and seamlessly transition always seemed to me like something all fighters should embrace...so many ways you can play with range to confuse your opponents when you switch stance mid combination
Masterful Tactics
I love your channel
Amazing.
Thank you
That nod at @11:20 to Pac. It seems he appreciate that defense sequence.
Great vid! And was hoping you would feature teofimos fight with Loma on how to neutralize the matrix step. He used the cross guard, reverse cross guard, and punished the body on those matrix steps. It threw Loma off the whole first half of the fight
Im as hype for the video on switch hitters as i was for ufc 300
Great video. There's not enough video drill for southpaw, so thanks you a lot.
You didn't speak about the pendulum technique, specially for Lomachenko. He is always doing it to look for new angles.
Crawford is switching a lot between regular and southpaw, thats why he's got specials advantages on his opponents.
A french southpaw boxer 🥊
great video as always. need the switch hitters video!
I'm fully ambidextrous I can write with both hands so I don't have a preferred fighting stance, it feels mostly the same either way, but my right hand did end up being my power hand by chance. I blame the coaches when I was four years old in baseball for making me bat and throw right handed but I guess if I had a problem I would have switched on my own 🤷♂
Understandable my power hand is my left but I throw, shoot the ball with my right and fight orthodox but I find myself using my lead hand the most so I want to switch to southpaw
long upper with the right and followup cross works wonders for people not used to southpaws
Great video, I fought Orthodox and made a switch to southpaw. It's nice to flow back and forth.
As someone who normally leads southpaw, I appreciate the breakdown here. Gotta say I'm not very comfortable with taking the inside angle yet, but that'll change with time.
And as a huge Star Trek nerd, I appreciate the inclusion of Anbo-Jyutsu (although I hate that spelling 😄)
Off-topic but the song starting at 8:26 is fire ngl.
Please do a video on ilia topuria🗣️
pacquaios footwork is really something else, his signature footwork is his quick in and out style and i think is the main reason why he needs fast hands, he simply makes the opponents think that they are in a safe distance then in an instant he reaches you with 3 to 4 punches then darts out to look for a new angle, fast hands is crucial in mannys style darting inside to keep your opponents mind pre-occupied in defense then you dart out to a safe distance
that going into battle with no shield speech was the shiiiit
Could you possibly cover closed stance footwork or strategies too? Maybe compare to Southpaw? When I'm fighting other Southpaws I feel a lil lost in terms of what angles I should go for or how defense changes the other way around.
I would watch anyway, as I always do, but my personal GOAT Hagler is in, I'm super duper watching this be-yatch.
AND a Conan quote...let's goooooooooo
you a genius bro
All us wrestlers that transitioned to MMA got taught to fight South Paw. Thank you coach!
"what do you want to do better"
So I'm a Southpaw who strengths lie more in my Judo than my striking. But I'm trying to capitalize on the advantage. I'd love to see a video that talks about southpaw striking to clinch entries or kinds of takes downs that have played well off of coming from left-handed fighters.
Hell anything you want to do about us lefties.
Incredibly appreciative of your work and mad respect for all the acknowledgment it's getting.
inside foot postion is high risk high reward. its always safe to play the outside position game. but inside you will usually catch the other guy off but your also putting yourself right where they want you for the straight right
I’m right handed but I switch to my left a lot. I’m a switch hitter and love me some southpaw videos
I wish this was longer
Are there any vids that apply these lessons to Muay Thai/ Kickboxing?
I trained orthodox for years “I’m right handed” now I train south paw, I’m a stronger fighter. Before I would attack at angles of 45*, now it’s 180*. Now I can flow from right to left. Once I got the foot work to flow, the punishing power engaged.
Study “switch step”
Good luck .

I love Sweet Pea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Day 4 of asking for dmitry bivol breakdown
Bivol style is almost impossible to replicate in today's boxing. Today, when fighters are too greedy and would opt to train in order to KO their opponents as their first choice rather than train with defence responsibilities in mind.
Biviol style looks good when we see the finished article. However, getting to that plateau requires an insane amount of hard work and an equally stellar amateur background.
There's are no shortcuts to Bivols boxing style, and that is the bottom line.
Furthermore, you'd need to ask yourself if you could fight an entire boxing match whilst starving certain aspects of your traditional boxing repertoire?
As in, could you create for yourself, or learn to box in a stance/style that doesn't demand the use of some of the favourite tools used by majority of your opponents and still be expected to come out on top?
@@ProfsChannel I see where you are coming from, but as a taller fighter, I am mainly looking for the thought process behind bivol's boxing. I understand that replicating his pendelum style and all punching techniques/timings is completely unrealistic. However, one reason I like bivol is the fact that he is basically untouched every fight without stellar head movement and unique guards. He is able to produce such solid defense with just the fundemental footwork+guard+headmovement. His offense is obviously not like Hearns or some other heavy punchers where their counter may deter a punch in the first place. I want a breakdown on how bivol uses his footwork and jab in situations to go basically untouched against a fighter like canelo.
great video man love your vids.
why so many bots?
Because UA-cam is terrible at stopping them lmao I reported them every time and now I just shrug, keeps getting worse.

Next a shifting video for the Demspy, Hagler , Duran and Tyson style fighters 😉😬
Growing in the hood everybody fought in the southpaw stance because they were right handed. They would swing right hooks all day with little use of their left arm. I loved boxing southpaws because i would block their right hooks with my left arm being in the orthodox stance. Aka the "Northpaw"
Is that what they used to call you? Northpaw? Because your paws always lead north?

Personally, I like my foot on the outside as it sets up my jab better and allows me to pivot easier. 👍👍👍

As a southpaw I get caught with the left hook do I use inside or outside position

😂😂
As a southpaw, one of my favorite moves if my opponent was in a more bladed orthodox stance was basically a roundhouse left, and I'd either target the body or sweep it up into a shovel hook to the head. I call it roundhouse because I'd put all my weight into it, pivoting on my lead foot.
That's probably incorrect terminology bc Idk shit BUT I do know that if I can slam my rear hand dead on into your solar plexus with my whole body weight behind it you'll drop.
Basically a left body shot that switches to an uppercut when you want it too
Lol love that Conan Ref 😂
My People!
Yes I love boxing southpaws they always try and spam right hooks and after a while you can just school them with a jab.
Surprising they don't try to focus more on the left. Unless you're sparring a lot of right handed southpaws.
I would have done jab_cross_lead-uppercut or jab_lead hook to the head_lead hook to the body or Jab_cross_body-hook.
What's your prediction for Usyk v Fury? Do you think Fury will be able to cope with Usyks southpaw style?
You are WRONG! YOUR VIDEOS CAN NEVER BE LONG ENOUGH! 💪😁
Thing about Marvin and Bud, they are both right handed 🎉🎉
The best fighters are the best, not because they know the rules, but because they know when to break them.
Please do a Floyd Mayweather jr vs Manny Pacquiao breakdown please 🥺?.
I am right handed, is it better for me to be orthodox or southpaw
Every famous southpaw are a freak on their own: Pacqquiao with his unlimited stamina and speed, Hagler and his idestructible chin, Tank and his power, Loma and his dancing feet, Rigondeaux with cracking skull left hand and agility.
The only one seems not so special attributes is Bud. Dont let that fool you. He can deadlift 405lbs, know how to wrestle very well, and very slick.
All of them can still be top rank without their southpaw advantage.
As an orthodox fighter, I’m currently figuring out ways to stop these tactics.
