- When Floyd Mayweather fought the Drunken Master Emanuel Augustus, the world was not expecting one of the most thrilling fights of the decade. But Emanuel's Drunken Style Boxing proved incredibly challenging for Floyd's Philly Shell Defense. 12 years later, Money Mayweather would still maintain this was his toughest fight.

Emmanuel Augustus would have been huge today IMO. One thing I love about watching his style is that you can see the mastery amidst the chaos.
I love his style, wish mma had a couple of fighters like him in the ufc.

It’s amazing just how exhilirating Pretty Boy Floyd’s aggression was. Money May may have been the better boxer, but. Pretty Boy Floyd’s relentless but methodical aggression is such a beauty to watch.

The fact that Floyd went back to his corner after the first round and said "I can't hit him" is a testament to Augustus' skill.

@@technomickdocumentalist2495 Some idiot fired a gun into the air, some time later, the bullet came down and struck an unexpecting Augustus in the head. He was rushed to hospital and had to have surgery but luckily he managed to recover, he was very lucky it wasn't fatal.

Augustus is a tragic example of a skilled but unorthodox fighter running up against the harsh hand of biased boxing judges.
yeah, I'll also add that it could also be because he's so awkward and unorthodox. your standard judge who probably have to take a course on how to judge a fight, most of augustus techniques were foreign to these judges and therefore they might've assume he was being ineffective. but none the less whatever the reason is, augustus have been on the wrong end of a lot of fights when it came to the scorecard.
@@shadowX316 What's crazy is I bet those same judges would have had no issue scoring rounds for Roy Jones Jr. despite him having a similarly showy and unorthodox style. Boxing politics is really weird. To be fair to Roy though, he had the kind of power where he didn't have to leave things in the hands of the judges.
Judges who love to use the phrase showboating and fundamentals when in actuality they are being biased. I can't stand folks like that.

While there are plenty of other channels I watch, including the hype channel you described, there is no one else I can think of that breaks down the art and science of boxing like you do. Keep doing what you do David, real champions watch your content.

Someone should make a movie on Emmanuel Augustus (the drunken master) one of the greats that was constantly robbed because bias judged couldn’t appreciate/respect his masterful gyro balance skills and unique technique. He was brilliant.
What I loved most was how Augustus was enjoying himself and Mayweather was all serious and feeling anxious
Even before that fight The Drunken Master was already a legend in the Mayweather gym. Floyd loved him. Thus very little trash talk before the bout. This fight was quiet possibly the two most technically gifted boxers to ever face each other in the ring. I never seen two fighters adjusting to each other round by round and within each round. The display of technical boxing was beyond ridiculous. Augustus was doing Loma shit before Loma was born. High level boxing.
I didn't know he trained in the Mayweather gym. In fact i didn't know they even know each other, especially when you notice their reactions after certain rounds, like after the first.

I think if Augustus took his career more seriously - he'd have been something very, very special. Not having full training camps. Taking short notice fights, not spending adequate time training and nutrition into account - he still did incredibly well in his storied career. Still my favorite Boxer of all time. So fun to watch.
It wasn’t his fault. He was forced into taking opponents in their home town with the judges in their favour.
He was what’s known as the B-sider. They kept bringing him in on short notice with the expectation he’d be an easy win and propel their own fighter’s career.
The drunken master either pulled a fantastic win via tko or ko, or got robbed on scorecard
Also the trainers for top fighters would avoid Augustus because even if they won they wouldn’t looked good doing it. There was little upside to fighting him.

There is no way to train against a style like Augustus. How do you find sparring partners to prepare you for that style? He, Augustus, was so underrated. Floyd's body attack is underrated, too, probably the most underrated part of Floyd's arsenal.

My brothers were boxers and my nephew is a amateur mma fighter so I grew up watching the fights with them. I have learnt so much from your channel and because I’ve never been a fighter my understanding of fighting isn’t as good as my brothers, but I do feel I understand it better and appreciate more now because of you and it helps me appreciate martial arts much more because of your analysis and understanding.

I had watched the full fight and throughout all the rounds i thought Floyd had landed most of his punches but instead Emanuel Augustus was dodging and parrying the hits. When I found this out I realized how incredible Emanuel’s performance truly was.

I really don't even get how the other channel was caught on quote stealing his work as they didn't even say word for word what he said and there aren't really too many ways to say certain things about the sport of boxing. Most of the analysis would just be an echo chamber for many to just espouse the same thing over and over again.

Augustus worked with a diverse set of trainers in different parts of the country. You can see all that added to his own creativity & skill.
Always loved watching the man fight.
He knew how to keep the crowds into the fight, how to be the Heel on the road. It kept him working.
He's living proof of the saying (style makes fights) not records or hype.
Also, in his win over Ray Oliveira another favorite of mine. When He knew something was wrong with Ray and he backed off and tried to keep it to body punches. That took Alot of class and respect, not seen in many fighters.

Calling Augustus "The Drunken Master" is a tribute to his greatness.
I think people looked at Augustus as showboating when he was actually using athleticism, instincts, and great rhythm. Rhythm is super important in boxing.

Easily my ultimate fantasy match up from watching this channel.

He was Floyd's initiation into greatness. After that fight he realized that a record is not always reflective of ability. Some are unconventional, so you have to adjust in seconds. Fortunately, Floyd is super intelligent in the ring and solved the equation.

When you broke down his unorthodoxed “orthodox” style, it made me ‘preciate him even more. So, keep up the great work. And remember this re your work: imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
I'm so glad you pointed out the obvious and poorly done plagiarism as their video is often nonsencial and their video footage sometimes didn't match what they were saying (I went to watch it all the way through to check you were representing it properly which you were, of course). Maybe you could do a full breakdown of it in a seperate video, it would get more views towards this kind of plagiarism and hopefully stop them.

Brilliant video , Augustus had rhythm you couldn't teach , a style that couldn't be couldn't be imitated. His style was his own that's why mayweather struggled at first he's never seen that style before. Two boxing purists from different sides of the street one the artist , the other hard work dedication
Floyd’s rarely humble, but you can see in the interview he meant it. Emanuel Augustus was a seriously special tactician during his day.

If Augustus had just a bit harder punch, he'd be one of the top boxers in the division of all time. That really was his only issue being his power, watch his highlight reel he has one of the best uppercuts I have ever seen, but the guy didn't go down.
Edit : as someone else reminded me the Judges hated him and about a dozen of his loses are in reality wins
Edit : calling his style just showboating and not understanding that they are feints and getting into the opponents head, is one thing, such a casual take. But to then say that you are great fan yet dislike everything about them is on a whole other level.
and the judges hated him for dancing, so the judges made him loose rounds he should of won, thats why hes got so many losses.

Would he really be able to keep his Drunken Style if he had power? since fighters train non stop to get the power that they want. I feel like if he trained like Mannh Pacquiao or something, he wouldn't be able to focus on his unpredictable formless style and also the fact that he punches from weird angles and takes fights on short notice.

Augustus fought judge bias more than anything. He was brilliant as a fighter and entertaining.
@@remyhavoc4463 yeah you can, you should watch his highlight reel, in that he has one of the best uppercuts I have ever seen in my entire life and that came from that style, but the guy he was fighting just ate it with ease, which shows the guys chin, but also Augustus's lack of power. Also his dancing style can draw people in for punches like Ali did in Liston 2 and Foreman, where he is actually moving back as they move into his punches.
Just watched the fight. Augustus was picking up steam in the 8th or 9th when Floyd was protecting his hand. Then the ref called for a medical check on Augustus's ear which showed nothing and he said, "Man, ain't nothin wrong with my ear." Fight started again and Floyd took the momentum back
Emanuel Augustus was incredible. Had his career had been managed, and managed well, boxing history would look quite a bit different. Man had everything.

I'm so glad to see you finally made this video, having to explain to people why it's so impressive that Emanuel went toe-to-toe with Mayweather is a little tiring. So many people don't seem to understand that this fight was not just some one-sided affair like the commentators would have you believe.
Emmanuel didn’t go toe to toe with mayweather, rather, mayweather went toe to toe with Emmanuel. There’s a big difference. Respect to Emmanuel’s skills but mayweather could’ve outboxed him, kept it long but this was the mayweather era that cared about what the commentators kept on saying about him and his fight game. They wanted more blood and gore and mayweather gave it to him. Another time mayweather did it was against cotto. This is why mayweather preaches non stop to young fighters to not give a crap about what the commentators say because your health is on the line.

It's more impressive for Emanuel though because Floyd is regarded as the p4p best (including being an incredibly underrated infighter) and he actually made it incredibly close and competitive, dealing more damage to a much younger, faster, stronger, and aggressive Floyd Mayweather than anyone had before and ever managed after. Floyd probably could've made it easier if he disengaged more and stayed more on the back foot but Emanuel was basically the first to truly disect Mayweather's style and make the outline for everyone after on how to try to deal with him. I have no doubt Emanuel would have still got in close and still made it competitive at the very least.

Mayweather and Emmanuel went toe to toe because mayweather engaged in combat he didn’t have to be in. He could have just boxed long. The young mayweather did this because he was trying to give the pundits what they wanted. At the time he cared about their constant negative reviews of his fights. He didn’t realise that there was nothing he could do to appease them.

This was a SUPERB fight, and this video breakdown is so well done. Kudos to the fighters and video author.
The most underrated part of this match is how the Drunken Master was able to adjust and adapt against FMJ as well. Both their boxing IQ and fighting instincts literally out of this world. Elite.
Fun fact: if you read Bruce Lee's fighting method, his recommended fighting stance is very similar to the Philly Shell. Pretty sure Bruce got it from his boxing experience.

Longer lead hand extended away from the body, and the rear hand tends to stay in front of the chin to guard against the cross vs beside the ear to block hooks, but otherwise yes
Augustus really figured out Floyd's philly shell out in this fight. Ive never seen anyone do that aside from Castillo fight to a lesser extent. I feel like Maidana just bulled through it with wild overwhelming shots but didnt really figure it out. Augustus was throwing precise shots that were landing when Floyd was actively trying to do defense.
and Chavez did it with uncle Roger Mayweather. beat him twice.

First, phenomenal analysis as always on the Mayweather-Augustus fight. You are unquestionably one of the best combat sport commentators on this platform. Your diligence, transparency, and obvious knowledge of each sport is informative and nuanced. You can breakdown the lighting fast exchanges in a fight that appear to be random punches for the elite level exchanges that they really are. You are the gold standard for this kind of analysis.
Which leads to second: I think it’s really important that you addressed this plagiarism, especially when it spreads misinformation. Imitation is certainly the sincerest form of flattery; your videos are so good other people want to be just like you. HOWEVER, this is definitely over the line and I’m glad you confronted this. I remember you made a community post explaining part of this situation. I know you said in this video you don’t want to address it again which is your decision for sure, but I wouldn’t mind if your comments were a separate video just to clear things up. You are too talented and work too hard to let someone else steal your projects AND misinform. There’s a reason why you’re taught to not plagiarize in school! Thanks for breaking down one of the greatest style-vs-style fights! I’ve used a modified Philly shell in light bareknuckle MMA sparring, also finding the gap between my two forearms as where my partner could land a body jab. Credit to the Drunken Master for exploiting that gap with boxing gloves on. I think it is thanks to his open visual awareness and his non-telegraphic jab (both head and body). Both these skills are worth further study - much to learn I still have!

Re the left hook, Philly shell is _designed_ to defend against round attacks to that side of the upper body (including left high or mid round kick).

These men love boxing and it shows
So Augustus had only one way to beat Mayweather he had to catch him off guard and try to end it early. You see as the punches build up, and the fight extends. The mind slows because of the damage from shots to head and body, those on point head and body movements slowed down with that and with becoming tired. Very well planned fight by Augustus and very smart adaptation by Mayweather. A useful clinic from the fighters in both styles.
Augustus had no power to finish fights which is why he kept getting robbed in decisions against judges who in that era didn’t like his style and thought he was making a mockery of the sport.
I grew up watching Augustus fight on ESPN all the time and I was always amazed at his skills. Watched him get robbed plenty of times. Mayweather has always maintained that this was his toughest fight.
I love his style. So unique. It’s both got the rhythm jerkiness of like a Tyson fury but inter spliced in perfect natural rhythm like a Mohammad Ali and if he was a fan of hip hop and drinking 40’s of old English 😂 the angles he got in just came so intuitive and fluent despite looking so unpredictable. He was as clever as Roy Jones but did it totally on the fly. He was a true master of his own style.

Masterful work. I always appreciate the depth of quality presented on this channel. I watched a couple of those videos you mentioned including the Chavez Philly Shell one, I'm glad you called out the pretender. As a visual artist myself I know it takes time, creativity and straight up effort to bring your work to it's final stage, and to know that someone thinks they're just gonna copy and paste that shit is unbelievable. Nonsense.
Actually there were no points deducted for “fooling around”, no such rule exist. Only rule like that is unsportsmanlike conduct, which this behavior does not fall under. Most of his losses came from the fact that he had more punches landed on him, than he did that he landed on his opponent. His biggest downfall was dodging punches(quite poorly) rather than blocking. He was much like Anderson Silva in UFC, he played around and dodged punches, and rarely blocked, allowing the punches that did land(which were quite a lot) added up points to the opponent. This is not to take away from the Drunken Master, he was such a unique boxer that most boxers were unable to train against that type of style. If only he was better at avoiding punches he could have went far into his boxing career.

The Nevada State Boxing Commission was in bed wirh Mayweather, because they knew they wouldn't lose revenue, but if Pacquiao won they knew a potential rematch (when/if Mayweather lost) fight would be in the Philippines and they made sure that could not happen.

This is false. He fought his prior fight on August 12th and this fight was on October 21st. His next 2 fights he fought just 1 week apart however. He fought an easy tune up ok February 10 2001 and then he fought his next fight ok February 16 2001. He still gave Floyd a lot of problems but he wouldn't beat Floyd no matter how much time he puts into camp.

Agustus just fights like an old fighter. Lots of guys from the 30s to the 70s used this type of style that baits oponents to throw opening them up
