I met les claypool when i worked at a golf course. He was leaving a hitting range when it started to drizzle. I happened to have my bass with me because i was heading out of town to a friend's cabin. He waited in the rain for me to grab my bass. He autographed it and jammed on it a bit.
Psychedelic and deranged is a perfect description for Larry Lalonde’s playing in Primus. He’s probably the most underrated guitarist of the 90s. Coming up with guitar parts to compliment Les’ bizarre bass parts and then soloing over them are challenges that many could not have handled.
My favorite thing about the first time hearing this song, is how EVERY bounces their head the same way!! ....Primus is unique, a genre into themselves and genius. OH, and "what the hell is going on here" is a typical reaction to the first time hearing them....lol
Fun fact: Primus singer, bassist Les Claypool auditioned for Metallica when Metallica bassist Cliff Burton passed away. Metallica said he was too good for them.
I just saw these guys live for the first time in September last year. I basically went because they were covering a Rush album in its entirety, and did not know much of Primus’ original material. But I left the concert a true fan!
In 89, I'm 21 serving my country fixing F-15s in the desert heat. After work, sipping and chilling... tunes in my ears took me places. Then, I heard PRIMUS. Holy sheeeeeeet! Thanks for reviewing their work and taking me back there for a moment.
To be able to listen to Tommy the Cat and appreciate it is one thing. To be able to discuss it intelligently is something else entirely. Instant sub. You NEED to check out this song live at Bonnaroo. It is absolute fire and showcases exactly what you mentioned. The audacity to sing those words and play that bassline at the same time...hmmph!
Hands down, no band is as talented and unique, and kills their concerts like these cats! Once you acquire the taste, almost all other music sounds contrived or typical homogenized, corporate rock. Long live Primus! Oh, and they have sooooo much more material you’ll never tire of them. Just tellin ya dudes what the rest of us fans already know.
Never heard this. Have been curious for a month what this sounds like. Love that it is bass driven. I will have to try listening w/out the video. I know i love the bass. But there is so much else going on. 😂
Ah my lost youth! Funny story - Les Claypool auditioned for Metallica back in the day, and didn't get the job. Here's his take from an interview: "With a few years of hindsight, though, Les had mentioned that the band probably thought that he was a bit too strange for the band, saying “James said, 'we didn't hire Les because he was too good. ' That's probably the nice way of putting it. They thought I was just a fucking weirdo.” Oct 2, 2022 😂
The guy in the middle is the only one who seems to know what's going on. It's also rare for someone to realize how good the guitar solo actually is. Nobody else plays like larry.
Tommy the Cat is about an old man, a Tom Cat, that's reminiscing about his glory days when he was a stud that got with tons of women but because he is an alcoholic (Milkaholic) and describes everything in such an over-the-top fashion, was he really that good with the ladies back then? Do we remember ourselves better than what we were? Meow that is the question!
Primus Sucks !! So glad to see y'all immerse yourself in what's a misunderstood, but always appreciated by it's fans, band. So, I have the idea, that Primus is their own genre. The musicianship is next level, and they are serious players. More often than not, the lyrics are secondary. Although, a keen ear can pick out some of their more thoughtful and intentional songs. Les is a monster on that bass, but cannot overshadow the ability of guitar & drums. Also, their humor, and creativity in video production, during the hey day of MTV, an important platform for Primus, as their style didn't always equate to tons of radio play, they toured, and made contributions wherever they could sneek in another niche. South Park theme song,, as well as the Robot Chicken theme. Headline musical festivals, toured as a 3 man band, w/ the greatest 3 man band, ever - Rush. It will be in interesting ride along with Primus, and I am here for it ! 🤘 ✌️
Dig the reaction and, yeah, no one can argue with “weird.” I’m interested where you got the “2nd album” bit. Sailing was actually their third album, but second studio album. Primus Sucks, which was first, was live. Then came Frizzle Fry, which has the studio version of John the Fisherman. I was a college DJ when they were still underground and had the privilege of being the first to play Frizzle as I interviewed them the day they picked up the test pressings.
Love your reaction to what is probably my favourite Primus track. Insane, funky and incredible playing. You should checkout some more Les- Sausage and Riddles are Abound Tonight (ua-cam.com/video/qOrRPHokrEQ/v-deo.html) and for a group that took over from Primus in my prime listening slot- Mr. Bungle, Carousel is amazing, so is "My Ass Is On Fire", all well worth a listen. if you like fantasticly talented musicians who seem to be insane, Mr. Bungle seem to have taken the insane talent of Primus, mixed in a bunch of Zappa, stirred in a liberal helping of prog and garnished with the heaviness and weirdness of System of a Down. To be honest, having heard the remastered first album of Mr. Bungle, early SOAD is heavily influenced by Mr Bungle.
It would be great if you check out some more Primus!!! Very unusual to say the least gotta love them...pull up lyrics you have to....luv it and Primus sucks!!❤🔥🔥
Just when you think you've heard all the music there is to hear...... AVATAR the Avant-garde Metal band hits you in the face. Try HAIL THE APOCALYPSE by AVATAR.🤘🤡🤘🤡🤘

Dude what that’s awesome as fuck😂🔥
Proof? 🤔
That story is so cool. A guy you want to be cool and humble being cool and humble. Yes
Fn awesome!!
did he also hand you 500 dollars and then polish your shoes on the spot?

You either get and appreciate the musicianship of Primus or you don't.
Like red hot chilli peppers but the craziness up to 11
So true
If you can't appreciate the musicianship of Primus, then you don't know a damn thing about music.
but it's an acquired taste imo, like the first few times i was just weirded out but on like the 4th attempt i loved it
@@salty_3k506 It took me a few tries to really enjoy Primus too. But once you do... man that feeling just never leaves.
Primus is so funky...don't hear of too many bands playing a "whamola" while the drummer is shredding it ...just mad wicked cool!
Yes such a unique sound and talent
Fun fact: Primus singer, bassist Les Claypool auditioned for Metallica when Metallica bassist Cliff Burton passed away. Metallica said he was too good for them.
Nice call on 'Ren and Stimpy'. John Kricfalusi did the animation in the 'Tommy the Cat' video.
Step 1. OMG the bass!
Step 2. OMG the guitar solos!
Step 3. OMG the drumming!
I just saw these guys live for the first time in September last year. I basically went because they were covering a Rush album in its entirety, and did not know much of Primus’ original material. But I left the concert a true fan!
I saw Primus in the early 90s open for 24 -7 Spyz at the Fastlane Bar in Asbury Park ,NJ
Larry Lalonde was in Possessed on their 3 first albums.. He's a legend
"Slappin that thing like it owes him money!" LOL!!!!! Classic.

I've loved primus over 30 years my granddaughter loves playing this song and watching me sing right along and never missing a beat.
That must make you so proud. That's amazing!!
This whole album is worthy of a review!!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
This song was featured in the movie Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey and is also on the soundtrack.
Love Les’s bass. That things gorgeous
The creators of South Park are huge Primus/Claypool fans. They had a couple Primus songs featured in the episode where Kyle becomes too self aware.

Thanks for reacting to Primus!!! Awesome!!! Try, "Jerry was a Race Car Driver" and "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver"
Yes! The guitar solo is amazing. Their guitarist is underrated.
Listening to Primus is like listening to someone's fever dream.
Primus is where funk and psychedelic rock smashes into each other at the intersection of mad magazine.

And Les Claypool's idol?
Geddy Lee.
Yup, makes sense.
Hearing Tommy the Cat and Jerry was a Race Car Driver hooked me into Primus immediately.
Thanks!
Saw live great music live band concert when want hear them live Woodstock
It's amazing how the guitar player went to play in primus from playing in possessed
Tom Waits featured Primus on his 1999 album Mule Variations.
I was fortunate to see Primus open for Rush when they released Sailing The Seas Of Cheese.
His lyrics are lit. Always on point, always worth reading up on. He is a hell of a writer.
Fun fact: Tommy the Cat is voiced by Tom Waits (vocals during animated section)
fun fact: they said that in this video you just watched (or didnt)
@@theconiferoust9598 not some lazy UA-cam reaction teaching me a fucking amazing fact lmao

Nomeansno is another 3 piece band from Vancouver Canada. You would not believe the sound they put out!
The Wright brothers on bass and drums and the guitar silent to sing vocals on Big Dick! From the album Wrong from 1987.

Primus, the only band where the guitar player is just trying to find a place to fit in. And some how did it
Listen to "Pudding Time"! It's my favorite Primus song
They played this song in Bill and Teds bogus journey at the battle of the bands

Yeah second studio album, we don't usually include EP's. Cool story, must've been awesome to meet them!
@@ViewsFromThe502 They were really fun. As a gag, I brought kazoos into the studio and they busted out a little impromptu kazoo ditty.
Les also plays the Southpark song
Look up who Larry's guitar teacher was . . .
Joe taught half of Berkeley to play
You have to know My Name is Mud. That's their most known song I'd think. Jerry Was a Racecar Driver, Wynona's Big Brown Beaver.
