I love that Primus is just so Primus that when they play something that sounds half-way normal, it's considered weird! "The guitarist is playing is time and tune with the bass - what the hell was Primus thinking!"
7:25 I wonder if the change in dissonance & harmony that you’re noticing musically here in Primus music, has to do with a relationship change within the band? I wonder if Tim ‘Herb’ stepping out of the a band, and Brian ‘Brain’ coming in, impacted the kind of relationship Larry and Les had? (There was also a bit of a hiatus between Punchbowl and Brown album, so maybe that impacted things too?).
Lacquer Head is definitely the way to go. Also, one of Les's more sad stories. Absolute classic, though! One of my favorite from Primus. Produced by Fred Durst!! Also, did you know Les had a project called Sausage? I'd be interested in seeing you review basically the whole album they put out.
Hearing him say “there he goes” the second that Ler starts his solo and actually deviated from Les’ notes, like the usual Primus sound, is so funny to me. Like hearing that and going “yep… that’s Ler”
First Primus album I heard was the Cant All Be Zingers album. Wore that cd out. Shake Hands With Beef was always a stand out song for me cuz its super catchy, the drums are incredibly tight, and I always thought the chorus “AND SHAKE HANDS WITH BEEF” was hilarious. Rad video dude 🔥
Bodacious always sounded like a leftover track from the Brown Album too me. Definitely seemed more sonically matched to that album rather than Anti-Pop
Our job as bassists is always to take the easiest route to whatever outcome is desired. Left hand slapping opens up an entire world of impressive and annoying techniques. It's your job to know when enough is enough.😂
@ I was going back through and trying to find a stand out and it’s tough. Greet the sacred cow is probably one of my favorites but i don’t think there is enough there with what has been gone through to uncover something new that hasn’t been covered yet…
Their styles are so different, with Herb being busier, and Brain just beating the shit out of his drums, and I love both of them. Brain's grooves are definitely easier to bob along to. Simplicity that's well executed is a formula that's hard to find fault in, and Brain's work in Primus is a shining example of how much a powerful drummer can add to a bands presence and groove when they don't overcomplicate their parts.
I just had a quick scan through his other uploads convinced I’d find some Trevor Dunn. Nothing! Would be cool to watch a reaction to Mr. Bungle - Dead Goon. Any Bungle, actually.
WHAT THE FUCK. I was just Jammin’ this song yesterday. While watching some of your videos I thought how cool it’d be for you to examine THIS song. I’m a bit freaked out. Ok, I’m gonna win the lottery….🤞🏼🍀🤞🏼 Hahahaha HEY YOUR CONTENT IS FUCKING AWESOME, and I really love how into Punk/Hardcore you’re getting!!!! Punk Rock is THEE best!!!! Keep up the great work!!!!
The Brown album is a coming of age album for me. Drum sound is like gunshots and set the whole vibe of the album IMO.I drove my grandmother nuts blasting it. Although she didn’t hate Over the Falls😂
I second the Laquerhead recommendation. Produced by Fred Durst if i recall correctly. The Ballad of Bodacious is a great funky number. The Final Voyage of the Liquid Sky are also some insane numbers.
Those 'uncomfortable movements' you mention, I think might be down to the same way they filmed Wynona's big brown beaver - there's a 'making of' video on UA-cam where they explain they performed and filmed it at 25% reduced speed. Then it was sped up to normal speed for viewing. This results in a strange 'jumpy' frame rate, and fast movements look really odd, so they accentuate the effect by making their movements larger than normal too. Not sure if this is the same, but it certainly has that same effect so guessing it is.
Ah, makes sense! I'm only drawn to that because the first music video I was ever in, we played the song at 2-4x speed and slowed it down, but never have seen it done in reverse like this. A totally different effect, super neat!
Been watching you for a while now and you are very good at dissecting songs.Your ear is amazing and you seem to nail everything 🙌👍!Keep it up dude!Impressive👍
Knowing Primus, I'm pretty sure "Shake Hands With Beef" has a second meaning. If you want to see a great example of Brain's drumming, check out the live version of 'Duchess' from the 'Animals Should Not Act Like People' greatest hits collection (it's on UA-cam); the drum solo is great. As for 'Antipop,' 'Lacquer Head' is the way to go ('Animals Should Not Act Like People' also has a great live version of it).
I was really quite into this song back when it first came out, and was surprised to hear how fans thought the band had fallen off because they were getting more and more mainstream... since the last album "Tales from the Punchbowl"
Probably late on the info but I had the VHS Videoplasty covering this album and live performances. They include behind the scenes of making this video and they trick they did recording the band was recording them at regular speed performing the song at much lower speed. In editing they simply speed up the footage or cut frames out of the overall footage to get it back up to sync with the original audio.
god look at the size of the kick drum. The Brown Album is such a bizarre record which is saying something considering this is Primus we're talking about. The whole thing sounds like it was recorded inside a padded room with wood paneling
Great video as always! This one in particular is a very nostalgic one for me, as I bought both Pork Soda and Brown Album my senior year of high school. I got Brown Album the summer of 2001 just after graduating after seeing the video for Shake Hands With Beef on MTVX on my digital cable. I was inspired by Les Claypool (and others, such as Matt Freeman of Rancid, Billy Gould of Faith No More, Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers, and P-Nut Wills from 311) to pick up the bass at the beginning of senior year in fall/winter 2000, and this was one song I tabbed out and tried to at least approximate Les Claypool, haha! I was surprised in your poll that The Chastising of Renegade didn't get more votes! I always thought it was a wicked-cool and unique one on bass, especially during the verses, with the subdued reggae-like guitar chords, minimalistic drumming, soft-spoken vocals, and an understated and unique bassline from Les! And as for this particular song, I found it easiest to play in Drop-D on my 4-string, since I didn't have a 5-string or (as Les has in this video) a 6-string. The lowest note he reaches is D, and I believe he uses an overdrive or a fuzz pedal of some kind, but I could be wrong on that last one!
Totally correct on how they filmed this. Most likely the song was slowed to 50% speed on the day and filmed normally then sped up in post to match the actual song speed.
One night at the Kennel Club, when I lived in San Francisco in the early to mid 90s, I saw Brain play with three bands in the same night. MCM and the Monster, M.I.R.V. and lastly a SF all star Zappa cover project called Caca, where he actually read for the whole show. My buddy, who is a drummer was like, "I fvck!n quit!"
*_You're the guy from the hamburger train, right?!_* 13:54 It's interesting you're talking about Infectious Grooves because in the early 90's Brain was a member of Limbomaniacs, a group that was on the same style bandwagon than Suicidal Tendancies funky alter ego. And the song is closer to The Meters (Primus did a cover of Tippi Toes) than to Rush in terms of influences. Lacquer Head is a cool song but I think Greet The Sacred Cow is more adventurous from the beginning to the end... expect the unexpected, even in a (micro)tonal way.
This is one of the few songs Larry LaLonde (guitarist) actually played right along with Les. They play so much with dissonance and often he plays anything outside of what Les is doing, but in this case, he is right there rhythmically and sonically. It is a change for Primus to be sure, but as always, amazing and true to them in a way only Primus can do.
Every album has a different sound. Les is always playing with different musicians and bringing back new ideas to Primus. It why they never went "stale" IMO
I love The Brown Album so much. I was thinking, maybe the "Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains" would be a good musical/sonic journey for you too 🤘 Buckethead is just such a cool & different player but I think he meshed with Les and pushed him to make some interesting decisions. Loved the video!
When I picked up the brown album in highschool I also picked up highball with the devil. Les's solo album and fell in love with 'awakening' and tried to learn it several times poorly. But it's still my favorite clay pool tune
The technique used in the video was to play the instruments at 1/2 speed in real life then speed up the video 2x. The effect was to give them unnaturally fast movements like a mosquito sized human would.
Brown album is my favourite Primus album. The drums sound completely distorted (and they are), but Brain is an amazing drummer. He came from the Limbomaniacs, who I saw a couple of times on tour with Primus (I was lucky enough to see Primus 9 times in the 90s and I'm in Europe).
I think Josh from Bass Buzz explained that it’s like an eclectic mix of slap/pop and hammer on/pull offs that Les does. Like he’s plucking w both hands in a weird way.
Love your content. I joined patreon for more Primus breakdowns. lol. Their concept album the seven is fairly short so would be a quick breakdown but it’s super progrock meets funk. One of the most unique albums I have ever heard.
Would love to see you come back to Duchess and the Proverbial Mind Spread, especially the live version released with Animals Should not try to act like People, def my favorite song off the Brown album.
I've been playing Primus on bass since I was 17, I'm 50 now. great review of this song. wait till Les gets the envelope filter on antipope, yes lacquerhead is the best one to start with the lore revolves around MTV banning the video due to the drug abuse reference.
I think that Lacquer Head represents his most prolific playing on the Antipop album. The title track, Electric Uncle Sam, and Natural Joe (2nd best playing IMO), are also great, but I think Lacquer Head shows off his skill the best. FYI, there is a footnote fact on the music video that the original claymation version was banned from MTV due its showing of drug use. I also don't remember it showing the band much if at all. So you might be best to find a live performance or alternate video to show Les playing the song.
I would love to see your reaction and breakdown of one of Rancid’s earlier songs from their debut album “Rancid”, it’s called Climb In (The Bottle), the intro will blow everyone’s minds. Tim Armstrong wrote this back in the day when he was struggling with alcohol, and as someone who has spent my entire life doing the same, this song really really hits home every time I hear it. 30 years have gone by and still it still has the same effect. Bring the lyrics up, everyone who struggles with alcohol will relate.
I think "Greet the Sacred Cow" off of Antipop is a really good showcase of Les's dynamic range in his playing. The song goes hard, but also has some really good use of harmonics and knows when to pull back a bit. Definitely check that one out.
My favorite Primus song is off the Brown Album, "Over the Falls". Verry similar sound, to Beef, but with acoustic instruments (in the vid) and more hauntingly melodic than rhythmic. Really weird band, but I like 'em.
After you finish your Primus journey, you should definitely review Sleep and Om's material. Their bassist/frontman Al Cisneros is highly revered in the stoner rock/doom genre. I recommend the songs Dragonaut, Aquarian, Giza Butler and Sonic Titan to start with for Sleep And for Om I recommend the songs State of Non-Return, Unitive Knowledge of the Godhead, Meditation is the Practice of Death (live), and Gethsemane (live)
This came out in 1997, Korn was emerging as the biggest band in the nu-metal vanguard. It's not at all surprising if the record company execs say a song with that kind of bassline as the ideal trackk to push with a music video/single etc.
Lacquer Head is probably one of the more popular songs because it had a video. But the title track Antipop is by far the best, catchiest, heaviest and most scathing Claypool song on any Primus album. Trying to imagine Les Claypool angry on any Primus song was impossible until Antipop.
The last superpower AKA rapscallion is a pretty awesomea primus song you should review. I'm sure it's been recommended by someone, and they would've been right. The change hallway through the song is pretty sick, even for ler les and herb.
“Was that a beef flat?”
Beeflat
Lol very clever
Man this video is peak 90's. Love it
It really is, hahaha. The effects are so endearing!

Does it help that shake hands with beef is slang for jerking off? I love this video. It really captures a fun family having a great summer night.
I had a K5 Blazer in high school with 2 Rockford 15s in the back and this song would nearly blow the roof off of it. Still jam it to this day.

@@jackhorkheimer Man... I am so extremely jealous you got to experience that!!

I second this absolutely brutal comment. Lacquerhead was the second primus song I attempted to learn that left hand mute is killer
Antipop is such a fucking banger of an album, probably my favorite Primus album all in all tbh.
Restin Bones. Puddin Taine. Fisticuffs. God I love this album
Golden boy, bobs party time lounge and the chastising of renegade are some of my favorites. All in all this is top 3 Primus albums for me.
Definitely one of my favorite albums.

Lacquer Head FTW

Awesome to see more Primus! For Antipop I'd recommend Dirty Drowning Man or Lacquer Head.
Both of these are awesome choices. DDM is so unique too.
Everyone says Laquerhead but everyone forgets about the secret voyage of the liquid sky. That’s the song to do

Brain is my favorite Primus drummer. I will defend this statement forever. Brown Album is my favorite Primus album too ❤️❤️
Brain is the shit!
i completely agree! I have listened to Primus since 93 and love Herb, but Brain just fit them so well!

Mr. Krinkle has to be on your Primus list !!! Les plays a stand up bass for the whole thing, and it's awesome!

Love the editing, where they remove every other frame. Works perfectly with this groove
The bass Les plays in this video was Carl Thompson's bass made for Daniel Brubeck, Dave Brubeck's son.
I love the jittery quality of the video. They really captured that twitchy way flies move. XD
They filmed themselves miming to the song at a really slow tempo. When played at normal speed they got that twitchy vibe.
The whole brown album is like this. Way different than everything else. Definitely my favorite Primus album.
On antipop do "the heckler"...its the secret song after the last track
Les Claypool - One Better should be the next
2:51 Yeah, it's synconpated but the first two notes of this riff are ONE and TWO.
Totally correct on how they filmed this. Most likely the song was slowed to 50% speed on the day and filmed normally then sped up in post to match the actual song speed.

I love watching your genuine reaction to this band, I forget as an old man just how bizarre they are/were 💜💜
Definitely should've done Bob's Party Time Lounge

BEST encapsulation of Primus in ONE sentence!
God Bless you ALL!
Have you checked out any of the Claypool Lennon Delirium yet? because it is tasty.
So cool. And yes, lacquer head needs to be next. It'll click.
Lacquer Head!!
After you finish your Primus journey, you should definitely review Sleep and Om's material. Their bassist/frontman Al Cisneros is highly revered in the stoner rock/doom genre.
I recommend the songs Dragonaut, Aquarian, Giza Butler and Sonic Titan to start with for Sleep
And for Om I recommend the songs State of Non-Return, Unitive Knowledge of the Godhead, Meditation is the Practice of Death (live), and Gethsemane (live)
Brain is fav drummer of theirs. Herb is on the most classic stuff but i always loved the groove with brain
Lee Van Cleef and Too Many Puppies are so good! Thanks for convincing me to revisit Primus after 10 years!
Any time!
def lacquer head fo rnext one, it has a very unique usuage of the bass. great video!
This came out in 1997, Korn was emerging as the biggest band in the nu-metal vanguard. It's not at all surprising if the record company execs say a song with that kind of bassline as the ideal trackk to push with a music video/single etc.
The man, the myth, the psuedomexican...Brain!
Lacquer Head is probably one of the more popular songs because it had a video. But the title track Antipop is by far the best, catchiest, heaviest and most scathing Claypool song on any Primus album. Trying to imagine Les Claypool angry on any Primus song was impossible until Antipop.
‘Ol Diamondback Sturgeon is a great song, check it out. Interesting sounds as always.
"Eclectic Electric" and " Natural Joe" are my favorites from Antipop!
Lacquer Head and Ballad of Bodacious are straight THUMPERS! Either one would be a great reaction video. Lacquer Head is probably the more popular.
Have you done Southbound Pachyderm yet? Sorry if I missed it.
Yep!
The last superpower AKA rapscallion is a pretty awesomea primus song you should review. I'm sure it's been recommended by someone, and they would've been right. The change hallway through the song is pretty sick, even for ler les and herb.
6:25 "Look at just, kind of, the movements here." - Les proceeds to light up, levitate, and buzz around like a bug - "What the f--k?!" 😂
