    I believe that the skills and time required to nicely trowel in fresh plaster are outside the abilities and patience of most homeowners. For my repairs I usually use a vinyl cement patching material covered later with joint compound. For larger areas I sometimes replace with drywall or even apply thin drywall over damaged plaster walls after stabilizing the area.

      I have a similar hole in my plaster wall from taking out the baseboards. How do you attach the drywall to the lath and to the surrounded plaster? I’m beginner DIYer trying to remodel my pantry 😅

      You can find Plaster Magic products on their website plastermagic.com/ and on Amazon, just search "Plaster Magic".

    When you say joint compound, do you mean the same stuff that they use for drywall? I was told that drywall joint compound will not work with plaster. Is that true?

    Unfortunately we don't have a Part 2, but the next step is to add layers of joint compound. If you watch this video here ua-cam.com/video/o8vDTcBujV4/v-deo.htmlsi=o_8fREl1pMKhN1EJ&t=464 from about the 7:44 mark, you'll see how to property to perform this task. Good luck.

    A complicated repair for a simple fix. Unless there is historical value in repairing with plaster, using regular drywall and drywall compounds yield results that are identical at a lot less time and costs.

      aly emond no shit, i used to do this bullshit when i first started and got laughed at....the horse hair wall is literally crumbling with only the plaster holding it together.....the amount of time it takes to go through this process u could strip the whole wall out and blueboard it where it will last MUCH longer than this bandaid

    • @djm.326
      @djm.326 7 років тому

      aly emond ...hey, I have a medium sized hole in my plaster wall. The wooden lathes are pushed in ( or broke). Can I just hammer that out and then just put a piece of drywall board in there?

    • @leavingitblank9363
      @leavingitblank9363 7 років тому +1

      @David Myers, Yes (cut it out, don't hammer out the lath), but you'll probably have to cut the lath back to the studs, and then the drywall has to be fastened securely to framing. Don't leave anything flapping loose. That can be a PITA, which is why fixing a hole with drywall isn't necessarily an easy job.

  • @Maghanashi

    Just cut a square of plasterboard, remove all loose plaster, scrim the joints, bonding coat the holes and board, allow to start to set, knock off high points and finish plaster it... you'll be done in half the time.
    This 2-3 coat business is a waste of time. Finish plaster goes on in one coat, gives you a perfect finish and requires no sanding.

    Hello,
    I have plaster walls that look bad from bad repair jobs. Can I cut out the bad sections and put drywall on its place and then skim coat the whole wall?

      Hire a real plasterer and have hime cut out the bad patches and replace new with a proper application. This ism a crappy handyman application!

    Where's the rest of the job?? This gets me only half way. I want to see what you're doing about those plastic washers. They stick out from the original; I don't see how they'll be covered.

    • @shawnwashburn8330
      @shawnwashburn8330 7 років тому

      IThink they are removed after the adhesive sets

    • @leavingitblank9363
      @leavingitblank9363 7 років тому

      No, I know they're left in place. They secure the old plaster to the lath.

    • @jePenseQuoi
      @jePenseQuoi 6 років тому

      They are removed. They only serve to clamp the plaster to the lath until the adhesive sets. Here's a more professional job. www.thisoldhouse.com/how-to/how-to-fix-damaged-plaster
