    Kirk, I love the technique of filling the cracks with the caulk. I have exactly the same type of settling cracks, and thought I might have to tape them and plaster. So relieved!

      Good evening Edith, both ways work, however good caulking moves with the home, thus last longer in certain areas that are prone to the earth's movements.

      Howdy Scooter Girl, we all could use some valium now and then, but for cracked walls now that's a waste of valium.

    I just want to say how much I appreciate you talking about how normal cracking plaster is. My 1890’s home has some structural issues since half the basement is held up with logs, but knowing that the small amount of cracking isn’t some dire thing really helps to keep my head in the right place with all the stress right now. You’re the bob ross of plastering

      Howdy Fat Boi, cool beans, we have enough to worry about without adding minor cracks to the list, cracks are as natural as white on rice to be noticed no doubt, but not concerned with.

    I'm in a 125+ year old home next to a since expanded railway. Near my old chimney and the S part of my home, I have got these cracks and was worried sick as they appeared after a leaky spigot we had on that side of the home last spring! Thank you so very much for alleviating this

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  2 роки тому

      Hello Jessica, no problemo, with cracks in stucco walls it's always best to simply caulk them with Mor-Flexx as it has sand in it, and matches stucco finishes well. Then absolutely no need t worry. 🥂

    Lol you're entertaining. Thanks for the video! Have a home with a bunch of hairline cracks in the walls thanks to the great Oklahoma earthquakes we've been having! I've seen the hard way where people rip the crack back and make it extremely wide and that is insane! I couldn't begin to do it myself and patch it up to look good and I can't afford to have someone go in every room and do this so your solution is MUCH better. And like you said- just do it again if it comes back. It's cheap and easy!

    Thanks for the info. I live in a plaster house and it's good to hear someone tell the truth.... It will crack... Maybe not to day but it will. Thanks for the tip. Just built a new house and the drywall guy used fiber mesh tape without using hot mud. He's never had a problem but usually does remodels after the house has dried and stabilized. Lots of hairline cracks. Was hoping we wouldn't have to go back and tear out every joint. Caulking is worth a shot.......Thanks again.

      +Kirk & Jason Giordanos DIY plastering and stucco tips ,Kirk,say high ack please and make sure you surprise her with a cup of tea,leave it to brew for 4 minutes or so having added the peeled ginger,lightly sliced still in one piece,remove bag without squeezing it into the cup,leaving the ginger to continue giving out it's goodness.
      i also read to her at night before we go to sleep.it probably takes us a month or 2 to get through a book but depending on the read it could lead to other things.......
      may I suggest an excellent read called 'The wedding Officer' by Anthony Cappella,all his books have food and their history as the major themes of the stories,he's done one about coffee,ice cream and tea I think.
      The wedding officer is the true story set in about 1944 when the British government was trying to stop English soldiers from marrying and bring home their Italian wives.It's funny,quite sexy and well researched about Italian food especially mozzarella cheese which the sexy lady in the story makes from her pet buffalo's milk.

    Hi there,
    Hope you can help with this ...
    What does t it happen if you move into a new built house before everything has dried properly ?
    Can it be the cause of moisture and condensation problems ?
    Just after 1 month we moved into this new flat, I could see tiny tiny beige and some other darker bugs running on walls, close to the sinks and now that we have mold, they're running on those part of the walls affected by mould.
    Also, stuff left for a few days close to walls ( like bags or shoes ), gets full of mould.
    I would love to hear your opinion, please.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  9 років тому

      Hello Ransie Rubin, good question, If you move into a brand new home before the interior plaster or exterior stucco has dried, that means you moved in the same day as either of these systems were applied, very unlikely.
      If you have a home whether or not it is brand new or 200 hundred years old and you notice mold, the outer wall is leaking or the roof.
      you mention bugs by the sink, was the sink installed without splash guards on the wall to protect the plaster or sheetrock from getting wet and soggy?
      Is the wall where the bugs are kicking it, next to the sink or another source of water?
      It may now be a water intrusion issue but instead a water leaky situation in the home, bugs love wet wood, sheetrock and all around moist conditions.

    Thank you your video made me feel better about "serious cracks" in my home. Been here a year and cracks are popping up everywhere above the doors and in corners of walls, along baseboards/ceilings and around door frames. It's tormenting me thinking the house is gonna crack apart and tumble to the ground. I noticed some of the doors were shaved to close properly. We had a very rainy spring, super hot summer, and subzero winter this year and ive noticed the house has definitely moved/settled/shifted in some ways. It's over 100 years old and was rehabbed before we moved in.. can I ask what you would consider "serious" ?

Thanks for the matter-of-fact, reality-based guidance... and the clear, honest acknowledgement that cracks will crack again, and it's hard to know when. 2 quick questions: What did you "paint" over the area to ensure there was no dust before you added the compound to the wall? I really appreciate all the knowledge you are sharing with all these videos. I am working on plaster repairs on my 1925 house now. Why do you use mud to do these wall and ceiling repairs vs. using the same 3 coat system as the original? Is it because it is faster or less prone to cracking? Are there any disadvantages? I have come to accept the inevitable cracks after the repairs I made about 10 years back have started to crack again (and look much worse on the areas where I used tape with my setting compound) but would like the best repairs going forward, especially in the areas where I need to repair my old repairs.

      Good Evening Paul dude, hate to say it but as house move, O yes all will, especially when it rains, the water lites the house only a fraction, this can't be measured by mans instruments or seen or recording in any way, then when the dryer conditions return, blam, settling cracks, no big deal we all get them, caulking cracks instead of mudding sometimes flexes better when the home is moving however with a big patch only plaster or mud will repair it.

      Yup, that's true, it's gonna crack. I guess my real question is that what are the advantages between repairing holes with a setting mud vs. doing it with a brown coat/scratch coat/veneer plaster system other than speed? Is one repair stronger than the other? Is it even worth doing the 3 layer traditional system to repair my old walls or does the setting compound perform almost as well?

    Hi Kirk, I have "Rock Lath" walls in my 1950's-era NYC apartment that develop cracks. Many of these cracks are straight, suggesting that they are occurring right on the seams between sheets of Rock Lath - mostly on the ceilings. Some of the cracks are similar to what you've shown in this video, as well. Are the techniques you've used with the caulking vs spackling still appropriate for my situation? I can tell that many of these straight cracks have cracked before, with evidence of taping over the cracks.

    Filling in the . cracks is a nice technique, what type of caulking did you use? Here is the big question... I have a Faux Venetian Plaster on an entire exterior and interior house that is 17,000 sq ft. My dilemma is, would you recommend just filling in the cracks and re finishing the area, which will be very noticable since it wont match, so wouldnt it be better and more professional looking to redo the entire wall area from edge to edge as you would do for a solid paint? As you may know, you dont want to paint just half a wall because no matter how perfect you get the paint to match, it wont blend well unless that entire area is finished. What would you do considering the house is about 25mil and the owners just want to make it look nice so they can sell it. Suggestions on this? I have done some pretty crazy techniques, even making concrete look like wood planks without stamping or using any stain. Beside the point, my dilemma is fast approaching, and getting this job will be based on just . repairing small areas at a lower cost and quicker, or a very expensive re finish. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  5 років тому

      Good afternoon Jason, I'd recommend interior caulking for the interior, or lime putty.
      Naturally, f the exterior, if the exterior finish is sandy which most stucco finishes are and it's going to be painted Id recommend the best caulking sold that you can find.
      In our areas, Sherman Willaims makes the longest-lasting paint but cost a whopping 80 bucks a gallon, I'd go with one of their caulkings.
      I use nothing but polyurethanes when lathing such as Siakflex 1A, it's an adhesive sealant, but can't be floated in well for cracks as too sticky and will drag.
      Make sure the tube says it won't shrink, or you will be doing the job twice.
      More-flexx is caulking with sand added and cleans up well for the exteriors.

    Just bought a 5th floor apt that has lots of messed up painted plaster walls. In one of the long (5') diagonal cracks you can see that somebody had once patched with fiberglass mesh. (the kind of mesh you can use instead of tape to when putting together drywall) Obviously the wall shifted again. Crack is probably 1/4 ".
    Two questions:
    1) Best approach? break down the crack area and do a mesh plaster patch again and hope for another 10 good years?
    2) when patching painted plaster, do I need to sand down the surrounding plaster or will the new plaster stick to the surrounding paint?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  9 років тому

      Hi MultiPoseur, if they are big enough to have dust in them, you can scrape out, wire brush out use a wet sponge, the idea is to get the dust out and fill the crack as no caulking will adhere to dust, for long.
      FYI, if the house moves as all do, to to a hundred different reasons this can re-crack a wall in the same area, as no amount of caulking is going to stop a 100 ton home from settling, especially in the rainy season, as if it rains for a month, this moister can life a home where it's not detectable by eye then settle when dried out months later thus causing that same area to re-crack as it is quite possible a normal stress area.

      You can use either Plaster-Weld or Quikrete bonding agents. Most folks don't use anything around the edges, we always do as we're professionals plus that's the proper way to do these kinds of patches for longevity. FYI, using tape weather paper or fiber-mesh tape would leave a hump around the perimeter. When installing new sheetrock then tape is necessary around where all the boards meet. Not for what you see being done in this video.

I leave in upstate New York and we’ve never had success with Sheetrock compound when applied to repair our plaster walls. As weekend warrior what mud do you recommend for the numerous wall patches.

    what if it makes a hollow sound when you knock on it ???? And there are cracks and when you touch it it crumbles ?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  7 років тому

      Good Morning Sarina, good question, it can be that the plaster has lost its adherence from the base coat or you are tapping in the field, the filed is the area between the studs, this area sound hollow as it is, if you tap on an area that sounds solid more than likely there is a stud behind it, these are the best places to hang pictures on as in the field there is not much strength.
      Any area's that crumbles when being touched is ready to be repaired, FYI, cracks are normal as all houses move a bit when rain forces the ground to swell when drier conditions return the home settles, thus hairline cracking, I have this in my own home too.

    Is caulking the same as spackling?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  7 років тому +2

      Good Morning Safaira good question no, caulking is sold in tubes for use as a flexible substance that moves with walls for example while spackling is sort of like taping mud as it is composed of gypsum, dries faster and can also be used for cracks or holes, the big difference being when the wall moves the spackling plaster may re-crack while the caulking flexes.

      We spackled hundreds of feet of cracks from thermal stress, settling, and occasional earthquakes with Red Devil spackle. The cracks reopened quickly. We fixed the next room with paper tape and Durobond hot mud. Six years and the cracks are still gone.
      We use acrylic caulk for outdoors when thermal stress is extreme. It makes sense for indoor settling stress. Modern paints can stretch with the strain.
      My next project is the living room and I am so tempted to use acrylic caulk. This wall has displacement because the chimney settled. I may be using tape and building it up with layers of topping compound.

      the fiberglass or paper tape does help big time, the house was really moving, although red devel spackling is one of my favorites for cracks, but won't flex too much.

      Good evening Amandas, depends, sometimes I can scrape lightly with a putty knife the areas that are noticeable, and other times sandpaper works well.
      If nither of these are an option, I will skim the area with gypsum then blend the edges in then re-texture. This method does take a lot of practice.
