Fantastic news! When I heard that the quinacridone nickel azo gold paint was no longer going to be available, I was so sad because it has been my favorite for many years. I went to several stores in my area an was able to get 3 of the little bottles. I am so excited that you were able to get the formula and share it with us. Thank you so much!!! 😊
Enjoying your videos very much!! Do you have an IG for your art? Thanks for this one. I know artists Love this color. Don’t know why they would discontinue it 🤷♀️
@kaseyinthe305 - Hi Kasey! Yes, I have an Instagram, but I hardly use it. I may start posting there at some point, but this channel and my newsletter are my focus for now. As for discontinuing the product, they had to because they could no longer access one of the raw pigments. 😀
What a steal, just saw this Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold 128oz container for only $1,097.27 on Amazon - Canadian !!! I don't understand why Golden would stop producing one of the colors we all drool about, makes no sense!
Unfortunately they had to - this is from their website: "The rumors are true - Quinacridone/Nickel Azo Gold (PY150, PO48) in all GOLDEN acrylic lines is being discontinued due to the unavailability of PO48." It's not Golden's fault, they are just a tiny player in the use of these pigments. From what I understand, the real culprit is (primarily) the auto industry.
Me too...too! 😂 It's simply one of the finest colors ever created - goes with everything. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. 🥰
Thank you for sharing this. xoxo PS we have a colour here in Australia made by Atelier paints (I think they are Chroma) called Australian Red Gold which is very similar but a bit more red. It's a gorgeous colour too. Not sure if it is transparent. But I do love the QNAG by Golden. It is very expensive here.
Oh yes! I can totally see Australian red in this color. QNAG is no longer manufactured by Golden - that probably why it's so expensive where you are. Have you seen the DIY version video I made last year - it's pretty darn close, and the formula came from Golden. 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio No, all Golden paints are very expensive here. Much dearer than the locally made brands of equivalent quality. Yes I have been your DIY version. Cheers.
When they first announced the discontinuation I was in disbelief, but now I am so happy that there is a workable replacement. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio Oh me too! I tried the Holbein Quinacridone Gold and it was a disappointment. I am happy to find your channel, a viewer recommended it to me and I have subscribed!
Thank you - and that little Badger mixer is fabulous! Years ago I almost bought a little Badger shaker for small airbrush paint bottles and when I went back to get it, it was gone... and I never saw another. I have used air brush medium to keep my fluid/craft paints viable for decades but mixing is always the problem. I finally gave a lot of those paints to a grandboy and he was thrilled. He put in an order for more! I had to explain that I gave him what I had! LOL! I fell in love with Quin Gold back in the 90s when Daniel Smith came out with it in watercolor. Next to ultramarine blue, I think it is my favorite, most used color. I mixed it with everything! This looks like a good substitute! If only beige cars would be popular again so we could get quinacridone golds/oranges again!
Kathleen, I'm putting you in charge of starting the beige car movement! 😍 Quin Gold is my #1 favorite product on the shelf. Nova's Super Pearl Gold is #2 and a new entry this year for #3 is Light Phthalo Blue 😍 Oh goodness - now I'm going to have to do a video using all 3 together 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio We had a 1976 Chevy, 2 door, wide bodied Bel Air - with 4 kids. It was beigy/kind of yellow, definitely Quin Gold base! Sadly, I will NOT take up this challenge! Beige cars make my brain hurt. Beige reminds me of the years of renting places painted Landlord Beige! LOL!. I was still refusing to buy a tube of orange oil paint back then, because I had not yet discovered the difficulty of painting a sunset without it. I was so grateful when I finally got to the 90s and started watercolors and Quin Gold appeared! I have an unopened tube, waiting....
Hi Jen - The reason Golden had to discontinue this color is because the pigment (P048) is no longer available, and a suitable replacement pigment has not been found. The great news is that the formula they gave us is pretty darn close 😀
Wonderful! I had heard that they were discontinuing this, but I never heard why. Any idea? Thanks for this recipe. It looks fabulous! And it is really beautiful on that green paper!
Hi Janina! Golden had to discontinue this color because the pigment (P048) is no longer available, and a suitable replacement pigment has not been found. The great news is that the formula they gave us is really closet the original 😀
Appreciate your share (and of course your enthusiasm!) What is incredible to me is that Golden would discontinue a colour that has so much popularity... doesn't seem very smart from a marketing perspective... hmmm....
Hi Paul, thank you for your kind words. The reason Golden had to discontinue this color is because the pigment (P048) is no longer available, and a suitable replacement pigment has not been found. So, until then we’ll middle through with this formula 😀
Thank you so much for sharing. I was wondering just recently if there was a formula to mix your own. Perfect timing !!! Love watching your videos. Blessings ... Jayna from down under 🦘🇦🇺
I usually write on them with a black Sharpie right away, then if I remember to later, I go back with a piece of blue tape and write the name on it again. It is not a perfect system, but it works.
Thank you for this! I was just getting ready to try to buy a new bottle finding it was not there. I'm just gong to get a 16 oz bottle of the red iron oxide and the 4 oz bottle of the Nickel azo gold to mix together. LOL That should last quite a while..lol Thanks so much for sharing the recipe.
Hi Ellie! Yes, you can use the diluted one on a gel plate, and I don’t work with watercolors very often, but I would imagine you could recreate the color using the same colors of watercolor paints. I’m hoping to start exploring watercolor in 2025. 🥰
When did you buy your bottle of the nickel azo gold, and how much was it? I'm curious to know how much it increased in price, and why. Thank for sharing a great alternative!
Hi Margaret - I looked it up and found that I bought it at Dick Blick in April of 2022 for $68 USD. I think the reason that it's so expensive now is because it's not being made anymore, and those who still have full bottles are trying to sell their inventory for extreme profits (IMO). However, just to be super-clear, The listing I showed in the video was not listed by Golden Artists Paints. It's some other retailer.
When the mixed version of QNAG dries, does it have the same translucent sheen as the original? All of the gel papers I’ve printed using QNAG just shine when dried.
This is a fantastic question! I say yes - I wish I could post a picture for your reply. The mix that I made with the airbrush medium had that nice sheen too. I’ll have to experiment with matte medium on the plate when I get back from my trip. 🥰
Hi Barbara! I usually base that decision on what will happen next. If I know that I am going to go over the papers with other paints, or other mixed media supplies, I will glue down with and then cover with matte or gloss medium to protect the papers. If I'm not going to do anything else the the papers being glued, I'll use Yes Paste. Sometimes I just decide based on gut instinct (it's an imperfect science 😂) Thanks for asking such a great question. 🥰
This has gone the way of so many other products over the past few years - so many items have become redundant & unavailable or so ridiculously expensive as to preclude a purchase. You try & buy some hydrogen peroxide in a pharmacy - It's been impossible for months - Why? Something that was freely & cheaply available for several decades - is no longer. Also the quality of items are inferior & size shrinkage is abundant now in comparison & for that we are charged through the nose. So thank you for creating this recipe in these austere times. 'Necessity is the mother of invention.'
