Hello Jackie, thanks for this beginners tutorial and showing how different the prints come out with very few variations of colour. I´ve got 3 plates by now and am so excited to see, what you will do with yours next. 🤩
I do know the adage about taking care of your tools, but . . . I work pretty exclusively with 12 x 12 deli paper on two 12 x 14s, which are on acrylic boards, no clamshells. I can’t tell others to do this, but I don’t have any problem with them; I just use mineral oil to recondition them occasionally. I gel print for use in altered books, so 12 x 12 paper is great for spreads. I’ve just found your channel and am intrigued. I see getting airbrush medium in my near future, per your technique. P.S. Loving color sooooo much, I so appreciate your fearless use of it!
Like you, I have several plates that I keep between plexiglass sheets - it's a risk I'm willing to take (and everything has been fine), but I share the 'safer' advice with my viewers. You will LOVE the airbrush medium if you get it - I have yet to run out of ideas on creative ways to use it. Thank you for being here, Nabby. 🥰
Okay - you just became my favorite content creator by NOT editing out the finger licking. I love REAL! That was real for sure! Please don’t apologize!!! Also love the grunge and textures you achieve!!
I just tried my gel plate this weekend for the first time. I really did have a lot of fun, but there were some things that puzzled me about the process. I wish I had seen this video first - it's so helpful! You mention some things that other tutorials don't really explain. Great video! Thank you.
Nice tip on the Murphy's oil soap and water in a spray bittle. I keep a dollar store kitty litter pan of MOS/water nearby. I toss stencils, brayers stamps, even small gel plates in forxeasy clean up at end of session. (Even the next day!)
Now see, that's super-smart! A kitty litter pan is deep enough to hold it all AND be able to move it to the sink without splashing all over the place. I'm going to grab one today 🥰
I love my 16 x 20" gel press plate! I can fit an 8 x 10 stencil on one side and flip it over on the other side for a reverse print. I frequently use part of the plate as my palette to brayer paint. That avoids to oval shapes one gets from the brayer spreading paint directly to the plate.
I’ve purchased most of my Geli plates from Temu and they seem to work really well. If I happen to have a 50%-60% off coupons from Joanne Fabrics, I’ll buy them there but Temu is a great place to purchase your Geli plates.
Yes - I really wasn't sure what to think about Temu, Some items I purchased were a bit disappointing, but the gelli plate was not one of them. How do you keep your plate protected?
I wasn‘t sure about Temu either but the few stamps and stencils I‘ve ordered from them are absolutely 💯. I keep this gelli plate in a tin container which I bought a while ago from Amazon. It‘s the Diana Wakely one from ranger and works really well. I have also made a variety of my own gel plates with a recipe which includes isopropyl alcohol to prevent mold. I store each one of these of various sizes on their own piece of glass (from cheap picture frames from the dollar store) rimmed with duck tape (which are also useful as palettes ☺️) I cover each of the gelli plates with a piece of teflon permanent baking foil. Plastic sandwich containers have also proven handy for storing the smaller ones..glass Tupperware is also an option.
Thanks for the great video. I was preparing to finally use all the gel plate stuff I obtained over time, along with some materials I'm testing. I happened upon your channel, I guess because I did a search for ''painted papers with gel plate,' Wow. That was fortunate, because you are a GREAT teacher. I now have to wait until morning, but I have everything set to go. And now I won't freak out at the weird stuff happening, with my plate repelling the paint, I appreciate you orienting us newbies to the value of using the plate with such textures, & how the surprises are one of the best parts. I've seen people use the plate in ways that made me wonder why they don't just direct paint, & had no answer for that when i asked. You show me a good use of this tool. You helped orient me to the experience stupendously, perfectly. I've watched some other videos over time, while having my lunch or whatever, & you really stand apart as a great teacher, with a good logical order to the video & explanations WOW! Thanks for not driving me crazy with rambling without logic & order to what you are doing. I appreciate your guide offer too; so i hope it's available. I look forward to seeing more of your videos
Hi CC, and welcome! I'm so happy that you found this channel and that my style of creating and sharing works for you. The gel plate is a magical tool that only get better and better every time you use it. Have a blast today while you play with it! 🥰
This is a brilliant tutorial for beginner gelli platists (think I invented a new word there lol 😁😄) Jackie 👍 definitely have to take my gelli plate out of hiding now. TYSMFS Jackie ❤
I love my 16 x 20 plate! I can fit an 8 x 10 stencil on one side, then flip the stencil iver to the other side. I like to use part of my plate as a palette. I like to print 16 x20 background prints too. You can tape sections off to any size you like.
I'm a new subbie. And I hit notification bell, so I won't miss any videos. Love this video!! Great ideas to make backgrounds. I'll be doing these techniques!!! That is one BIG gel plate!!!! I have a 9"X12" (I think!!) And use a 5X7 as a pallette. I pull out my 5X7 most of the time now! It's so much easier, cuz I'm new to gel plating. I'm happy that I found your channel. I've never used paints till the gel plate. So I have lots to learn. TFS Austin TX USA
@barbaracabrera207 Barbara - thank you very much for the sub and encouragement! I'll tell you - working with the giant plate IS hard, no matter how much experience you have 😂. I hope you join me this coming Sunday for a "paint with me" gel plate session. I'll post more info in the community section when it's ready.
Brilliant, now I need to see your technique for creating the grunge. I know you did it by not cleaning your plate but I don’t either and my plate never looks this great. Is the remaining paint black? Please, more GP videos. I’d be interested in your book, too, if it’s not primarily remedial.
Thanks for taking the time to comment, Lynn. 😀 The deep grunge was made by using the gel plate as my mixing pallet for other painted papers. When mixing, the paint dries with more texture and depth than when just pulling a rolled-out print. That's what creates that grunge. Does that make sense? I'm actually including that in an upcoming video that I'm working on now. The Gel Print Guide is a video-based guide - I'm not sure if you would consider it remedial or not, but the good news is that it is free of charge. You can find the link to it in the description.
Thank you very much, I have just started gelli. It makes me a bit anxious to think that I don’t have many ideas about making collages. Do yo have any UA-cams on the collages?
Hi Clare! I do have a couple of videos here (links at the end of the message). But I want to say that it's ok to use your papers any way you want. Grab a stack of copy papers and just start gluing pieces of your gel prints on them. It doesn't matter if it looks good, it only matters if it feels good. The more you do this, the more comfortable it will become. In no way do I want this to come of "preachy" it just that I know what happens when creatives start focusing less on the outcome and more on the feeling of making. And here's the best part - if you don't like something you've created, you can just throw it out 😃 it's only paper. Here are a few of my videos: ua-cam.com/video/ReblW7v9nXE/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/GCVJ4440DQs/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/Gd3LZIXLBIk/v-deo.html You can also follow people like www.youtube.com/@ElizabethStHilaire or www.youtube.com/@FroyleArt they are both very inspirational. 🥰
Hi Lynn, thank you for watching. The bright green was Golden's Green Gold, and the stamp is from ArtFoamies, and it's called "Write's Block." I just put a direct link to it in the description.
Hi Jackie...really enjoying your Gel Print Guide and all of your terrific, helpful videos...you are an excellent instructor! Couple questions: I notice your fluid acrylics have different tops than the ones my 4oz bottles have (they are more like the high flow tops). Do the larger bottles of fluid come with those tops or have you replaced them? Seem like they would pour more easily. Also, I store my Gelplates in Ranger gelliplate tins.. wondering if the Temu plate came in a clamshell? Would Murphy's Oil spray be okay to use on the gel plate or is it better to mix up a spray bottle with the actual Murphy's oil soap?
Hi Robin! Thanks so much for your kind words 🤗. I’ll answer in reverse order. Yes to using Murphy’s Oil Soap on your gel plate. It will get all the crusty bits off so easily. The Temu plate did not come in a clamshell, but it’s small enough that I was able to put it on a piece of plexiglass and stored it in a cardboard box. The tops on my Fluid Acrylics were added by me, and they are a complete FAIL. The fluid acrylic is just too viscous and what has happened is that it dries up inside the screw top. 🙁 So, lesson learned - as I replace the used bottles I will not be using the screw tops. All great questions, Robin. 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio Thanks so much! Too bad about the tops...I thought it looked ike it might make it easier to apply the fluid acrylics with those caps. Two more questions- how do you find the Nova paints compared to the Golden Fluids and do you ever use the Golden Opens?
Again, great questions, @@RobinGayl. The Nova paints are not quite fluid acrylic, but also not heavy body - they're somewhere in between. I love nova colors for their incredibly high pigment load and spreadability. Plus, you cannot beat the prices. And having said that, I adore Golden Fluid Acrylics - it's like both are my children - I love them equally...just differently. 💜 As for the open acrylics, I have not played with them very much. Tht might have to be my next exploration 😍

Hi Gwen! Onion skin has a smoother surface than rice paper - it's more like the back (shiny) side of rice paper. It's almost like a very thin piece of acetate. I bought it to stamp text on and use in collage, and found I really like it for gelli printing. It's also great with inks 😍
