- www.motorbeam.com tests the new Maruti Baleno which is Suzuki's latest hatchback that will compete in the premium hatchback space dominated by the Hyundai Elite i20. Measuring close to 4-metres in length, the Maruti Baleno has big dimensions and draws power from the same set of engines that do duty on the Swift. The petrol Baleno uses a 1.2-litre powerplant to generates 85 PS and 115 Nm while the diesel powered Baleno belts out 75 PS and 190 Nm, both mills being matched to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Additionally the petrol Baleno is also offered with a CVT gearbox. Maruti Suzuki has used a new platform for the Baleno which is 100 kgs lighter than the Swift, resulting in an excellent power to weight ratio.

Yaa it's not as safe as polo but it's safety levels are pretty descent and the lower weight doesn't make it unsafe the weight reduction is due to better engineering

I hv driven it around 800kms till now ...n it is giving mileage of only 13.5 to 14 kms/ltr ( petrol). A bit disappointed, what is your take on it?
That's good mileage actually.
All depends how much you nose down that padel on the right foot.....
it's giving way more mileage now, it's been driven around 45k kms now n it's giving mileage around 16-17kmpl easily on hilly highways with ac on easily. But on straight highways/expressways it gives easily around 20kmpl n it ofcourse depends on ur driving habit n pressure on accelerator pedal. Depending on which believe me you can also get around 30kmpl. One more thing I would like to share here.... that i have also get my steering column replaced as it had some issue in the third year only n thanks to 4 years of extended warranty. And now I am again experiencing the same problem just after 1 year of its replacement n now warranty is also over. Anyone else have faced this steering column issue???
How would you put the Baleno CVT engine performance, ride and handling compared to Micra CVT ? Would it be an upgrade in these areas ? It is obviously more spacious than the Micra.
Yes the Baleno is better as the petrol engine is far superior to the Micra's 3-cylinder unit.

because during the test drive I noticed quite a high level of noise inside the cabin for even Petrol ?

It doesn't compete with the Figo, it rivals the i20, Jazz, Polo and Punto. Petrol engine feels better than the Honda for the manual.

Hi Can you elaborate more on the CVT version, is it really as efficient as manual and please reply about its overall performance in comparison with manual Also currently i have swift(petrol) 1.3 litre which use to come initially in swift can i expect a whole lot better fuel efficiency and performance with the 1.2 Litre K series motor currently used in Baleno in comparison to my current car.

+JB Verma yes, it's as efficient but there is the rubber band effect at higher RPMs. The new 1.2-litre motor is way better in most aspects than the G13B in your old Swift.

The infotainment is one of the best in the segment, works very well. Android Auto support is yet to come.
Sir i booked baleno delta 4 days earlier but now m wondering bcz everyone saying its external body is so weak.i can damage easily in soft touch with any other car or with a punch only.is it true???plz suggest
sagar narang yes body panels are weak and can get dents easily as compared to other cars. Because of these light body panels this car is able to deliver such a good mileage. Safety is ok since it has got 3 stars and structure was found stable after crash.

I am looking for a hatchbag for myself and thus had been browsing about Baleno for like a week now. I went for a test drive today for Baleno Alpha petrol. No doubt car is better looking than swift but lacks the beauty of elite i20. My personal test drive experience was a disappointment. Car lacked the pickup that I was expecting from a brand new car, again it wasn't too bad either. Then another thing I noticed was car engine noise, which I was hearing with all the windows up on increasing the race everytime. Which was a big turn off. I mean I have been driving i10 for 5 years now and its still better silent than this new Baleno I drove. But yeah it was a test vehicle, maybe roughly handled. Advice for others in hurry to buy Sigma model of this car.. Sigma is having terrible interiors, exteriors, maybe even worse than Maruti alto.. Its not mentioned anywhere in the brochure. Do check it before you make a booking by just looking at the top variants shown at the NEXA showrooms. Again thats my two cents..

yes the baleno is much more fuel efficient and has much more interior equipements list than i20
but baleno understeers like crazy and its weight distribution is a disaster.
i20 has the higher lower band torque which makes it easy to zip through traffics and sharp turning circles

+MotorBeam yes its true in i20 but only till 30 to 40 km/hr speed only , after it crossed 40km/hr the steering input feels direct and does not show any sign of torque steer or understeer.
By the way in your video itself at time intervals of 3:08 to 3:15 and 4:42 to 4:44 the boleno understeered so much that even after 2 cuts of steering correction and oversteering ,the body of boleno was unstable.

Agreed.. Try giving it a realistic perspective! So to say in a baleno @ 60 you should keep 1 car distance from cars ahead. In alto 2 car distance from a merc ahead
