Pigments are mined and created from different sources and areas of the world. Within different pencil/paint/pastel companies geographic sources for pigments vary as well. Different ratios of oil and wax sometimes animal fats (Holbein color pencils, amazing!) and kaolin are varying within different pigments. Earth pigments like black, ochre, sienna, and umbers require different ratios of oil/wax kaolin than the blue, yellow, red, orange, green, and violet pigments which vary within themselves as far as ratios of oil/wax/clay. I have gone down the rabbit holes with pigments, paints, pencils, and pastels and have learned a lot of interesting facts. It has actually been helpful to my artwork because I understand more about the pigments, mediums, chemicals and resources used in making different art mediums. I don't know everything and like you said no one knows but the company what those ratios are. But what I understand from learning about pigments from oil paints is earth pigments dry faster. So that alone right there tells me a factor that could affect the process within pencil formulas. There are many different types of black pigments also. Carbon black ,lamp black, Mars black, Cassel Earth. "Natural pigments" has a lot of information on their website about pigments and they are responsive with questions and also knowledgeable in different areas besides oil paint. Also the "Dick Blick" art affiliated forum called "Wet Canvas" contains threads pertaining to different art mediums including colored pencils. I have learned a lot from reading through threads there and asking questions. Some of the people on there have chemistry/scientific level knowledge and experience. I hope this helps you to learn and understand more like it did for me going down all these rabbit holes! Enjoy your journey!

Appreciate the comparisons. Very interesting. Also too, the paper makes a difference. Lyra, Faber Castell will tell you what paper their various products shine best on. I blend easily on the right paper with "the oils". Plus the "oils" have use with mineral spirits to look like an actual oil painting and such.
Adult coloring books can vary so I think "wax based" are probably a best buy. As you showed, no need for "specialty" items to do great quality work on that end.

I started in may of this year, and this video showed me that the lyra and de ever so famous polychromos are very a like (not the same, but very much a like). Here in brazil, the polychromos costs 3x the price of the lyra!!! Soon i will buy the lyra, and this video helped me make the final decision (i hope in the future, i will be able to buy the luminance)

You need to match your pencils to the right paper for that pencil. I, personally, don't feel that is the best paper to test pencils on. In my opinion certain pencils work best with certain paper. In certain color books one pencil may work much better than another kind.

    • @cedricnmarvin
      @cedricnmarvin 3 роки тому +5

Yep, I definitely agree with you about the paper you need to use to apply the pencils on. You shouldn’t use a normal notebook paper for this type of test because a notebook paper is too thin for layering colours and there is no tooth for the pigments to hold on too. If you are layering colours on top of each other you wouldn’t get much layers on and it would look and feel like you’ve burnished the colours.

Oh boy, we don't like constructive criticism. Read the other comments, I'm not alone. I'm very well aware what paper is in those coloring books, most of them. But if you dova test especially with those type of high quality pencils, you should use a quality paper not a lined thin paper on a cheap pad. Sorry, I worked for colored pencils a lot and I know what paper means. And everyone knows oil based pencils behave completely differently than waxed based. Actually they all have both but in different proportion.

@@greekveteran2715 For oil based like Polychromos, a paper with more texture will work better, a vellum finish. Neenah has a nice one, Springhill has a little more texture. For wax based like Prismas, a smoother paper is good because you don't need ti layer as much, but still with a little texture. The backside of Neenah Vellum is smoother also the Strathmore Bristol Smooth.

@@judithf9297 Thank you very much! I really appriciate it! I recently got into coloured pencil drawing. Most info I found on the internet, was that the Facriano Artistico hotpress, is some of the best papers for Polychromos, so I got that one for now. It seems to work great as all people said!
The only downside, that some may find with that paper, is only the fact that it's not 100% white, it's colour is slightly cream, but I really like the fact that it's surface is hard and takes Faber Castell hard pencils like a dream!! Thanks again for all the info, I'll try more papers for sure!!

NeeCee I’m so very happy that you did this because I never cared nor understood the difference. I based my purchase on how the pencils felt going on the paper. As far as wax pencils go nothing compares to Prismacolor they’re in a league of their own. They’re sooo smooth and buttery so I never bothered to compare them to polychomos . I think that different pencils perform differently and they all have their place. Thank you for another great video.🥰

every review is different - based on the personal style, the used paper, etc. - and at the end you should have one brand for details and natural colors (like Polychromos, Luminance, etc.) and one for larger areas, better blending and a different style of colorful (like prismacolor premier soft core). so - buy both and be happy ;-) the only thing with prismacolor and so many other brands - you can NOT buy separate pencils! and when your favourite used colors are empty you have to buy a whole new set - really bad choice of these companies for us - but good for their pockets ;-)

@@DollarDiva99 I second Shaytee B's vote! I would love to see how these pencils compare to each other on a coloring page. RN, I've got Prismas 72 set, Derwent Lightfast 12 set, and Arteza's Expert 120 set, but, I want to branch out and grab more pencils. I'm currently eyeing the Luminance 12 set or the Polychromos set of 24. Seeing how they perform side by side would be a great help in making my decision!

My opinion, to those who care, QUIT spending money on 15 sets of budget pencils. Save a year like I did and buy a set of beautiful pencils per year, like polys, Holbeins, Luminance, Derwent Lightfast.
I've been coloring for about 6 years and I have mostly high end pencils. I really don't feel the need to have 12 sets of $25 pencils I'll never use. Yes, Prismacolors were my first. And I love them. Buy a couple open stock for each and go with it!

The feel of a pencil and lay down of pigment is important but there are other considerations. Many professional artist will blend with mineral spirits an gamsal also blender pencils or burnish with white, would like to see that perhaps in your next video. And please use good paper as I would like to see them used on the support I would use ie acid free watercolor or 270gsm drawing paper. Thanks Necee:)

I love this, part II is going to be fun. I love comparisons, I think you should include Prismacolor, not because of oil balance, but just because they're so popular. Not my favorite, but I do think that it's a known factor and trying to figure out whether I'd like to buy another set would be easier by adding it to the comparison.
Anything more expensive than Prismacolor quickly triggers my feelings that I'm not supposed to be touching those.

I am sorry but your demonstration,I’m not sure how valid it is,because you are using simple notebook paper that is not just thin, but has no texture or “tooth” at all. That’s not the kind of paper you use for any of these pencils. This is the same as copy paper. Believe or nit, the kind of paper you use is actually the most important factor on what results you get with these pencils. So, i’m sorry but this test says nothing.

Also - this test is valid because all the factors but one are kept constant across the test. This is basic science from back in elementary/junior/primary school. You used the same paper, the same colours (as far as possible), the same heavy-to-light swatches, and the same person doing the colouring.

I have Colleen also. The way i can feel and see difference is... Biggest thing is wax leaves a more shiney layer and doesn't take as much layers. It kinda just stops accepting layers after a while. There is also that oil usually has a more durable pencil core and wears down less quick.
