  • I am frequently asked to explain the difference between certain pencils and as a result I have decided to dedicate an entire video series to this very question. However, perhaps the most often asked question is the difference between Derwent ProColour, Lightfast, Coloursoft and Artist.
    It is no secret my love for Derwent as a company and their products, however, despite this love for the company and its products, I always put the viewers first and deliver honest opinions and test on the products.
    In this video I have completed a botanical piece, the same image four times, each image drawn with either the Derwent Lightfast, Artists, Coloursoft or ProColour. I have of course provided links to the full and detailed reviews of each pencil, but the final images will be down to you to decided which you prefer. Also to actually find out my thoughts on how each pencil performed, check out my written breakdown over on The Art Gear Guide.

    I am not comfortable adding this to my site or UA-cam channel. I receive many emails and messages asking me how people can help support The Art Gear Guide, mainly I think due to the fact that I purchase all of the supplies myself, except those sent directly from companies kind enough to do so. I have decided to add a donations button to my site, however, I feel the best way to add such a campaign is as follows, all donations made will be used to purchase art products for review, however, all products purchased using donated funds, after they have been reviewed, will be used as giveaways to subscribers of the UA-cam Channel, the web site or any of the above social media platforms. This way I personally will not benefit from financial donations. I have set this channel and site up for my own enjoyment and not profitable gain. I feel with this support method, everyone wins but not in a financial.

    My Own Personal Art
    I would not exactly call myself an artist in the true sense of the word, however I absolutely love art as it has helped me immensely dealing with clinical depression due to my battle with constant chronic pain and disability. Follow the link to check out my own projects bit.ly/2qAa7BN
    Thank You
    Finally, thank you so much for all of your support, without all of you, this channel and The Art Gear Guide would simply not be the same.
    Thank you so much.

    Personally, I didn't think Coloursoft pemcils can create such level of detail, and you used different layers without solvent or OMS and they did blend beautifully. Why are they so hated? The Artist too... Lots of negative comments, but look at that pear! This video is the proof that every pencil in the right hand can do beautiful things. Bravo Harry!
    I'm very interested in trying Lightfast pencils by the way

      They are rather particular about what kind of paper you use them on. It definitely should not be too smooth or you won't get much layering out of them. But if you can deal with paper with a good tooth, or on eg. pastel mat, they work just great.

    Thank you Harry for this video.I'm a french colorist and drawer enthusiast, and I have some trouble using the procolour with multiple layers and sometimes with the coloursoft for fine details. And it's really a delight to see how you manage to make a beautiful work with pencils that are so different from each others! Sorry if I made some english mistakes. Thanks again !

      Dearest Harry, those are phenomenonal renderings of to the pears. After reading the blog, I went back and rewatched the video, and I was impressed how much you were able to complete with the limited palette of the Lightfast group. I was disappointed though, you never really came out and said which you preferred working with the most. I have only been coloring about 6 months, and own both the Artists and the Procolour. As I have other Derwent products and Prismacolors I didn't feel the need for the ColourSoft right now. I am learning to mix sets to expand the range, and some papers seem to work with one line better than the other. Thanks for your honest reviews, please keep making art as well.

    There is something soothing into watching you bring that pear to life using The Artists. Even though there are far superior pencils on the market, the vibe they give, that beautiful mallard green, the toughness of the lead which requires layering upon layering gives me such an organic and natural feeling. It's a shame I can't properly obtain them here in Romania, but I swear I'd love to indulge in them if I can get my chance.

    Harry, I'll say it again..... I think you under-estimate your talents as an artist. I can't draw freehand like this. You see your subject and know what and how to use and blend your colors. I could eat each pear. Each looked soooo good. Wish I could afford a Derwent set if pencils. I think they are fabulous. I liked the softness of the Derwent Artist. Thank you for that comparison. The UK sure makes a really nice colored artist pencil.

    So glad you made this video Harry, as another Derwent fan I was interested to see how you got on, I've watched the video and read your post. I love my Procolours, and was having issues using Coloursoft (too heavy handed again!) but I think I have licked that problem and bought myself a full set of them, although I've yet to make a personal comparison beyond swatching. As a hobbyist I don't feel I can justify the Lightfast, but they feel and look wonderful. I think on reflection, I like the Coloursoft and Lightfast pears best, the Scarlet looked more realistic. Lovely drawings though, all of them.

      The paper I used for this comparison drawing was the Strathmore 500 Series Bristol Plate. I personally love it, it is 100% Cotten and the Plate surface just basically means really smooth, but the cotton content of the paper takes the pencil beautifully. I do think however it very much depends on the type of artwork you are doing and of course the pencils that you are using

      For botanical and landscape the Lightfast definitely have the best palette, rich dark greens and beautiful delicate pinks and blues. After that I’d say the Derwent Artist when they had the 120 count but with the 72 colors I’m not so sure.

    I am searching for good paper to draw with colored pencil. I use Polychromos, Luminance, Prismacolor and I do have the Procolours, but I find them quite hard and the pigment laydown varies from color to color. Can you give me a few Tips, which paper is good and why? I bought a few different pads, but Icouldn’t find one I like.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  5 років тому +6

      Hi Jessy I will certainly do my best. I have used a lot of different papers and I find certain papers work best with certain pencils. For example, the papers that would work really well with your Polycromos and ProColour may not work that well with your Prismacolor.
      The paper that I have found works the very best is 100% Cotton paper, Strathmore 500 Series Bristol Plate. This has a very smooth surface but, the cotton nature of the paper absorbs the pigment beautifully. I am sure you have heard of a coloured pencil artist called Heather Rooney? If you haven't you must check out her work, she is breathtaking. All of her work is done on the paper I mentioned. Now the 500 series is pricy, but I keep it for the pieces I know I am going to be spending time on or if you sell your work you would use this paper.
      If you didn't want to use that paper, I find a good quality Hot Pressed Watercolor paper works well, St Cuthberts Mill or Fabriano and if possible with a high cotton content. The Hot Press Watercolor paper has a smooth texture to the paper with a little bit of tooth. You see, if you are doing something like portraiture that requires smooth transitions you should really use a smooth surface paper but if you are doing landscape a rougher textured paper is beneficial as it can actually help enhance the piece.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  3 роки тому +4

      Hi Sam, before you make your decision you have to think about what you do with your art. If you are wanting to sell original art work you need to consider the lightfastness of the pigments being used which will also enable you to put a higher price on your art work.
      Even if you think you are not ready to sell your art but think of it as a possibility some time in the future it might be worth considering the Lightfast pencils.
      However, having said all that, there are ways around worrying about lightfast ratings such as selling prints of your work, using printing companies which they themselves use lightfast approved inks and archival paper as well as placing the prints behind UV protected glass frames.
      I know there is a lot of information here but it is all information I had no idea about when I first got started. The ProColour in my opinion on the right type of paper are a beautiful pencil, I really love my ProColour but making a choice between the 4 Derwent big hitters is hard and I left one of the big Derwent pencils out of this list which was the Studio, only because it is the same core as the Artist but does react slightly different due to it being a thinner version of the Artists. If you are interested in knowing more about the Derwent Studio I have reviewed them here bit.ly/3i971Mc.
      Sorry for bombarding you with information if you have any further question you might want to know please do not hesitate to ask.

    Just watched this review again, more because it won’t be long before the new larger set of the lightfast comes out. I have the complete set of Faber Castell polychromos and the luminence, so an oil based and wax based pencil already. But in thinking unbelievably thst I may buy another set this year I’m veering more towards the Derwent artist, which sadly doesn’t seem fashionable these days to go for. I have always wanted the complete set of these in Derwent signature wooden box lol, but it is the range and unique colours which really appeals to me and with typical Derwent poetry the wonderful names they dream up for their pigments, I have the full set of inktense pencils and the graphitint and I think the artists will make a wonderful addition, the other thing about them is I like layering. Sometimes in adult colouring books with my polychromos it was not unknown for me to achieve something like 10/15 layers in some areas. Because this year I want to take my coloured pencil work more seriously, I don’t think it will be a waste of money to add more pencils to my collection. Thsnkyou for doing this review Harry, it has helped to firm up in my mind what to save up for, I think all your pears look great, I don’t have the skill artistically speaking to ascertain which could be described as the best, but what I did experience was a nostalgia for the artist pencil, when I started with adult colouring an Australian colourist PETA Hewitt inspired in me a desire to possess a set as she had almost exclusively used them at that point in time and I remember the co,ours were amazing. I’m never going to be selling my work so the lightfast issues are not a problem in my case. Decision made now to save up lol

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  5 років тому +2

      I know what you mean Margaret about the Artists not being very fashionable, but i also completely understand what you are referring to about the 120 set of Artists, the colours in that are to die for. You have to buy what you think you are going to enjoy most Margaret. With your layering abilities Margaret you are going to love the full 120 range of Derwent Artist, like I say the colour selection is to die for.

      The Art Gear Guide thanks Harry, I’ve decided I want to focus my coloured pencil skills on birds, I’ve got the graphite and soft pastels for landscape and my watercolour pencils. I’m doing watercolour flowers so as a change I thought I would learn how to do birds, imagine woodpeckers and kingfishers and hummingbirds, Derwent artist with their wonderful colours will be a very useful addition and I know they will go with what I have already, can one have too many pencils, I think I’m asking the wrong person lol. Funnily enough it was watching Marty’s reviews on the artists and polychromos back then which made me opt for the polychromos when my sister asked what I wanted, if I hadn’t taken note of his reviews it wouldn’t have led me to you, now you are my sole go to person I love your honesty and integrity

    Beautiful drawing and colouring. Seeing them all like that they all have good and bad points.

      Actually I don’t mean that. They have different points. There’s nothing wrong with any of these beautiful pencils.

    They are all beautiful. I just watch for the more lightfast ones due to customer satisfaction. In fact many seem the same to me.

    Thanks for share, what Is the difference between procolour and artist?. And for you, wich Is the best of this four pencils? Thanks a lot and muy best regards

      Thank you so much for your amazing comment and for also supporting the channel thank you so much.
      The main difference between the ProColour and the Artist is that the Derwent Artists have a slightly harder core than the ProColour. In terms of the core hardness, the ProColour falls into the middle of the Artists and ColourSoft. Not quite as hard as the Artists and not quite as soft as the ColourSoft.
      Selecting a favourite of the 4 is tough. As things stand right now I would have to say the Derwent Artist, because they have 120 Colours and for layering they are perfect. However, as things stand currently there is only 36 colours in the Lightfast range but there will soon be 100. When that happens I would think that the Lightfast will bump to my favourite.
      The lightfast is a gorgeous pencil and it just needs the larger palette to stand on its own as a industry standard pencil.
      I hope this has helped you a bit my friend.

    Just the video I was hoping somebody had made. I’m thinking about buying the artist pencils. Will watch the video and see. It fascinates me how people can draw then color. I struggle coloring in coloring books. Wait...what? Aw man. You didn’t say anything at the end on how each pencil felt and performed. I can see but dang it.

    Wich Derwent is better?

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 роки тому +1

      I personally don’t think one is better than the other, I think it very much depends on the type of art you enjoy doing or want to do and the type of paper you use or want to use. If you are wanting to sell you work then the Lightfast pencils are the only ones from this group that you could use because of obviously the amazing Lightfast ratings. If you let me know the art you mostly enjoy doing and the paper type that you predominantly use, I might be able to help you a bit better. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help just yet.

      Hi Rori, I have a wee soft spot for Derwent, but these four pencils in particular are just gorgeous. I am not a huge fan of their Studio range, but I highlighted that in my review of the Studio. I think now that the 100 set of Derwent Lightfast are out and ready for artists to purchase, I think that is going to elevate Derwent to an even higher level than they already are. Thank you so much for your comment and support, thank you so much.

      Same! I have been using Derwent's as my main choice in pencils since I were a child! (Now in my 40's)
      So far my collection consists of their Academy (the cheapest students option, very good value for money in their quality!) Watercolour (absolutely phenomenal series with how they melt and blend both activated or not!) ... some of their Metallics (meh...) and a good selection of their Graphites ... also very lovely to use!
      I'm in a rare place in where I can splurge just a little atm... so now I'm tossing up which set to invest in next. However, I would love to have them all! So that makes choosing any particular single series, extremely challenging! ... usually I end up so flustered I leave the decision for another day! 😂😂😂
