I always love those not-so-well-known pencils. I'm going to have to try these ones out and see how they work for me.

Great review Claire. I think SP should now be their official name. Looking them up was a nightmare 😂I ordered them on the weekend and I’m now very happy as they have the colours I love best and they do look to colour well as I have polychromos so any missing colours I’ll just go off to poly.. I’m in Australia and very surprised that the UK doesn’t have them or cannot have them posted to you. Usually it’s us. The price was fantastic and I couldn’t get over it. Good luck with subscribers and I always ‘like’ esp as you guys do the work and help many of us a lot with your tutorials and reviews.
Oh and I don’t have a cat so I guess the smell will be for me to worry about 👍
I just recently got these pencils buy haven't had the opportunity to test them very extensively. So thank you for the review. I do like them and hope they come out with colors to fill the gaps.You can't go wrong for the price.

I have my set & really like them. I use them right along with my FC Polychromos pencils. They are a really pretty pencil too! You can't beat these on quality & color selection solely based on the price. And, yeah, you definitely need to make a color chart. I do hope they come out with some more colors. Thanks for the review!

Amazingly mine arrived in 8 days from the US to Australia. No smell but possibly it’s because we have open doors and windows as it’s summer. I did smell them up close too and still no bad smell yet many state they do have a bad smell. Very strange as I was concerned. Can’t take strong odours. I find them very polychromos like and I adore the colours. I’d recommend them highly especially pricewise. Again 🙏 for the review Claire.
I really enjoyed this video. I don't have these pencils, but have seriously considered getting them. They are in my Amazon cart but just haven't pushed the "buy" button. They seen to color and blend really nice. I love my polychromos , but don't like watching them get shorter and shorter because they are my "go to" pencil. I get really frustrated with my Prismas, even though I like the colors, I get alot of breakage, crumbling and smearing. My prismas have to sharpened more often that my ploychromos too. Thank you for sharing

I have these and OMG I can't even tell you how much I love these. I also own polychromos and I don't like my polys! (I know I'm weird like that) But these I absolutely love just as much as I love my prismas. As far as colors go, these colors are just as rich and vibrant as the polys, AND the prismas. I just wish they had more colors!! And the price on these are amazing.
Thank you for the review, my favorite pencil is the Polychromos, Renoir is the second favorite. So I have bought many other brands. I will be trying these for sure. I want to find something that is comparable but not as expensive for coloring books rather than using my expensive Pollychromos.

Yay. I went ahead and bought these from Amazon on Saturday. They arrived on Monday. I swatched them last night. Gorgeous and creamy. Can't wait to start using them on a coloring page.

I bought these pencils after your review. I want a soft core pencil. I am not an “artist “. Just a paper crafter and I love to do all kinds of crafts. These are really wonderful. I think they are softer than Prismicolor pencils. I don’t have the patience to lay down later after layer as you do with Polychromos. I find they are just too hard for me. I agree about the addition of colors. Thank you for all your helpful tips and reviews 😘
I love these pencils! They are so smooth and creamy and the colors are all lovely. Sadly I lost one pencil and since they are not sold opens stock, I am screwed. I hope they are sold open stock soon!

Claire, I got excited when I saw that you review the Schpirerr Farben Pencils. I, too reviewed them on my website. My husband, Dietrich is German so he taught me the pronunciation, so you could hear it on my website. I do love these pencils a lot. I am planning to order the 96 set, for our home in Florida.The other 72 set is in Iowa, where we go in the summer where it is cooler. Thanks, I so admire everything you do.

The pencils in the 96 set are numbered AND named. The 24 additional colors have exquisite names! 😄
The numbering is totally different from the (old?) 72 set. It goes from 010 to 720, and then the additional 24 pencils have numbers that I still have to figure out - I guess it has to do with where the shade fits in in the original 72. 🤔 I got the 96 set last week for just under 50 USD on Amazon US. I see the 72 set is now 45 USD.
I just bought these and started using them at the beginning of January and I absolutely love them!! The ONLY complaint I have is that the tips do break easily upon sharpening with my Faber Castell sharpener. They do blend beautifully, and the completion of several drawings have been very successful except for the above problem.

I purchased 3 sets of these for Christmas gifts after seeing them reviewed. One set is for myself for when we travel. I had to try them out though before putting them under the tree. They are amazing! I own the full set of both Faber Castell Polychromos and Prismacolor Premiers and I love both sets. I would recommend these Farben's to anyone looking to up their game without paying the high prices of the mentioned artist quality pencils. I hope to see larger sets with more color choices in the future. I know several people who would definitely purchase them.
I just ordered these pencils as they are now available again on Amazon in the USA. I should get them in a few days and I can’t wait to see how they work.

I wonder when new larger set will be available
i got these a few weeks ago and i like them a lot, they feel like prismas to me if not sometimes i find them better, what i love is that their colours are really vibrate. i live in New Zealand and they do ship to NZ but i find with amazon US the shipping carriers they use usually stop the shipping part way through for any kind of colouring pencils and markers so the best is to get it ship to the US domestically and then get a shipping forwarding company to send it to you. the shipping prices work out the same.
Matilda C I live in NZ too, I haven’t had a problem with coloured pencils, but have tried several times to purchase paints and gel pens without success. Fortunately, my son has just visited from America, and bought me some stock. Wish I had known about these pencils though.
thats interesting Jenny, cos every time i have ordered coloured pencils on amazon US it gets dispatched and delivery is on the way but part way through when it gets to a certain state, they will then send it back to amazon US and update the status to can't be delivered for no good reason. the only time it was successful was the first time when it failed and i contacted amazon and they express shipped it and that got to me. but every time it has failed and i ended up having to use YouShop. it is strange cos i don't have issues with amazon UK

Yeah not enough brown and grey in this selection but they look nice to have in addition to other pencils.
Looking at getting some of these as a lot of reviews have been favourable, and I cannot yet afford the Polychromos.

Amazon is here in Australia now but hardly any decent art supplies or Colouring books and double the price of purchasing from USA.

Lesley yes Amazon Australia really is shocking isn't it I was really upset when they stopped us from shopping on the US and UK sites I hate amazon Australia the prices are ridicules and the lack of products is dreadful I often wonder if they will stay in OZ or close down then we can shop in the US again.
Have you tried Lyra? Also German, oil-based and reasonably priced. They also come in a set of 72, and would complement these for colours.

I have these colored pencils and i love them so much, they blend very well on cheap paper has they do for very good paper like Johanna Basford's book paper so i'm very please to get these and i hope they wpuld have bigger set because has Dollar Diva99 say the white is rubbish. What I’m wondering is what kind of pigments are they and Arteza using that the price is so cheap and quality so good? I have the 72 Arteza set and love them and l plan on getting the SF pencils but did wonder how they were getting their pigments so cheaply

You mentioned that these blend well with the Renoirs -- are the Renoirs also soft/require not too much pressure? (I'm wondering about buying Renoirs to complement this set, if it's worth it for the added color range.)
The Renoir are slightly more gummy feeling on the paper but I’ve heard they play very nicely with these

I just purchased these a couple days ago, and they have color names on them now. I'm pretty sad though, because their delivery wasn't the nicest, the guy just dropped them off in front of my door, and it broke the tips off a few of the very bottom level colored pencils. They were all out of place too, which made getting the middle tier slightly difficult to get out.
I have the Schpirerr Farben and the Marco Reniors and thay play really nice together. I love them both. Love Terri Simmers.

They look like fantastic pencils, shame about not shipping to the UK, I'm not keen on the Polychromos and my Prismas are running out and have gotten even more expensive over the last few weeks. Were £75 in November now back up to £100 and above for the 150, which is a lot to pay for the sake of one white,yellow and green. Great review as always. Tfs xo

Yes, I already looked into that possibility, smallest shipment was for 5, not a problem there, but they were going to charge £35.00!
I would look around and see if they are carried open stock at a local art store. If not look up on-line stores in the UK. Usually the shipping isn't bad if it's in country. Many offer free shipping if you order a certain amount of supplies and would be much cheaper!!

I can't believe I came across a review from you on these pencils! Lori, from Color My World. She was telling me about them, and absolutely loves them. I hadn't never heard of them until she told me about them. I was going to order me a set, instead I got the big set of the castle art pencils! Which I love them also. But now that I have seen a review on these, I'll have to get me a set. Lol. 😄 😄. So now I am going to have 2 new sets of pencils I'm getting for myself after the new year. These, and the new set of the 120 set of colored pencils from arteza! Have you got a set of those yet? I'm going to look at your site and see if you have a review on them. If not! RBdreamsART You must have missed the sale on Polys this Thanksgiving then..Amazon UK had them (120) for less 80 pounds I believe! You might want to keep a close eye on Christmas and Boxing Day sales for them...

Lightfastness, that is my first question :) do we have any info available on that?

Have started doing the lightfastness test of Schpirerr Farben along with Macro Renoir and Fantasia for 3 weeks. The Schpirerr Farben no. 041, 024, 071 ( all purples) fade a lot and no. 39 changes shade from violet to blue violet, probably the worst among the three. Some light colors of Macro Renoir fade, like no. 215( a very light blue), 209 (a clay rose)and 205 (a very pale pink), three pinks, 35,30 and 36 lose the vibrancy slightly within these time and Fantasia seems the best among the three brands with no visibly fading within 3 weeks. Note that it's winter time in my city and sometimes the weather is quite humid and rains, so the sun isn't strong within those 3 weeks and I'm only sticking the samples on the window that is not directly facing the sunlight due to the neighbouring tall buildings may block the sunlight occasionally.
Hi Claire, I came across this video purely by chance and even though I promised myself I wasn't gonna buy anymore pencils as I already have such a range of various brands that it's getting ridiculous, however your brilliant review got me intrigued so against my better judgement I had a look on Amazon UK but they are currently unavailable and they're not sure if or when they will have anymore, that's what baffles about Amazon, why advertise something if it's out of stock??? Anyway, normally I'd be disappointed if something i wanted wasn't available however I was quietly releaved as I've said before I have too many varieties as it is, so many brands which let's face it they're just sitting around gathering dust. But I really did enjoy your video, i hope you continue to enjoy your new pencils. Last week I was really tempted to buy the Koh-i-noor Polycolor pencils but stopped myself...TEMPTATION EVERYWHERE!!! Great video and I hope to see more, best wishes.

I just received them on Tuesday and am just trying them out. For the price I think these are great pencils and easy to work with.
Great that you mentioned the 100 Marco Renoir set, it means more colours added to the 72. I do think the quality of the Schpirerr pencils are better than the Renoirs.
For the record,....always move your sharpener in your leading hand, not the pencil!!!! In your case sharpener in your right hand!!!!

Schpirerr is just a medieval surname, one of many variations similar to Shapiro and Spirer. It's of German & Ashkenazi Jewish descent. It's derived from the German word "Spir" which means "stalk" (like a corn stalk or bean stalk). As most surnames tend to go, it was derived from either a nickname for someone tall and lanky, or it was in reference to that person's origins (suspected to have been the German town of Speyer). Whoever that person was, his name would become the surname for generations after him and much later it would end up the first name of an acclaimed Colored Pencil brand. Maybe his descendants were artistic 🤔

I'm not so sure about the value unless you really, really want oil based pencils in particular. I mean the 72 Prismas are still only $24 for those in the US and the full set seems to go on sale often nowadays...Many people I know bought the 150 set as a BACKUP when the price went down to $50 on Thanksgiving and I'm sure there will be Boxing day sales as well soon. That being said, I do think that sets like these would be awesome as gifts for beginners who might be too intimidated by artist grade pencils and as a travel kit. I sure don't want to take my 120 Polys, 132 Prismas or 120 Derwent with me on a train but a 72 SP? Sure! It's portable and nice enough colors for a good coloring experience. Plus if you lose a few or break something, you don't feel as bad. They're great for sharing with kids and friends too!
I love oil based pencils for doing things like gems, since they need a lot of translucent depth. You still get the effect with wax based too but oil based just seems to take it a step further.
raggedyroad I totally agree. Wax pencils lack the translucent quality you need for gems, glass etc. My favorite pencils are the Polychromos. But for the price? You can't beat the value of Prismacolor. I can recommend prismas even for someone on a budget - $25 for 72 pencils and you can always add to them from open stock when you're ready to expand.
Shilpa, we are on the very same page! I can't justify buying sets of pencils that don't come open stock anymore, either. It ends up costing me more in the long run to keep replacing a single color than to just buy a more expensive set at the start.

Claire, this is weird. I have two tablets. If I watch on one, as you draw the teardrop shape the lines the lines literally wriggle as you draw them. I watch on the other and it doesn't do it. I'll try and record my screen to show you.

Hi Claire. I know you did this review ages ago but I’m just seeing it now. Just subscribed. Enjoying your reviews. However I wanted to say that I have a 72 set of Sargent Art Supreme Colored pencils and they look pretty much the same as the SF pencils - not saying they perform the same , I don’t know that. These Sargent pencils are absolutely NOT watercolour pencils.

Raquel Garcia omg I kept saying these smelled like makeup! I thought it was just me lol. I do enjoy them though. I think I'm getting used to the smell or having them out of the tin has lessened the smell. Too funny!

I don't claim to have any insight into different companies' color curation process, but the balance with this set does seem off.
