We are so glad you mentioned the cost to manufacturers of conducting tests with special equipment to conform to ASTM D6901-15 standards for colored pencils. The Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA) has devised its own tests for artist-consumers, which are available to members, along with the organization's own results.

I appreciate your dedication to giving us information we can use to make better choices in art supplies. And I personally think you need the set of 100 Derwent Lightfast pencils. Definitely get the purples and dark greens and the super pale blues. I’m in love with them and use them all the time. I was perfectly happy with a combination of Caren dache and polychromos, but lightfast have something to offer on top, so now I use all three. What a shame!
I have learned though, not to buy full sets. I never use all the colours. Now I get a handful, and if I like them I get the colours I typically use. I won’t buy full sets again, it’s actually not cost effective for me even if the cost per pencil looks good on paper.

I’ve been doing my own personal pencil tests on just 5 or 6 brands for the last month trying to figure out which use in what ways (like on top of watercolor) and which to buy a set of. Your results affirmed I’m on the right track and though the brands I chose paid for lightfast testing (and its part of why I chose them in the first place), I’d love to know more about the lightfastness of some of the other brands. Thanks again for embarking on this enormous undertaking.

I've been able to blend them really nicely as well with blender pencils or burnishers. I have had a lot of fun doing pastel goth coloring books with their macaroon pencils as well. They were given to me as Xmas gifts the last two years and I've honestly had a lot of fun with them for non-professional coloring.

Star Joy golds are awesome and they have awesome skin colors for anyone who likes to draw portraits. But the original Star Joys were even better if you can find em being resold you should grab em. And also the Schpirrer Farben and Markart/Nyoni are top picks of mine personally. I also recommend Colleen pencils for a softer Prismacolors feel. I know a lot of people think Brutfuner Squares are Gods budget gift to the world… they’re alright. Prismacolors, Luminance, Polychromos, Pablo’s and Arteza are all worth the price. Just buy 1 or 2 sets of those rather than 10 sets of budgets. You’ll get much nicer looking work.

I will say I love Derwent Lightfast for the feel of it on the paper. Caran is great but I like Derwent better for the way it moves and layers. Most artists have a preference for their work. That is a lot of pencils! Super helpful to see the pencils performance especially by budget. I've just taken advantage of Black Friday deals and got a great price on 120 Polychromos and 100 Lightfast for my art stuff, I have Chromaflow for my fun projects and colouring books and I still have my Crayola which was my staple for a long time that I think I'll keep for nostalgia and just doodles now I have invested in other pencils. When deciding on the Derwent ranges, I actually brought one of each pencil for the different lines in the same/similar colour to see how they handled, and I actually found a couple that didn't feel nice to hold, I've learned I like smaller and smooth pencil barrel.

Wow! Thanks so much for doing this! What a lot of work! As a colored pencil artist myself, I’d love lightfast info on them all. I know that’s a big ask but it probably one of the most important pencil traits for those of us who want to make art that will last. Thanks again! Just seeing all those pencils made me so excited! I have the Caran d'Ache Luminance as well as Prismacolor and Holbeins (plus other brands I use less often) but have been wondering about the Derwent Lightfast. A test on those would be handy to have…you ca never have too many pencils, right?! Lol! 😉

Hey Sarah! I am a proud owner of the Derwent light-fast complete collection, prismacolor premier, Lyra Rembrandt polycolor and Faber Castell polychromos. Of them all I absolutely love the Derwent light-fast. They feel good on the hand and layer exceptional well. As a newbie - Black Widows work great for burnishing + blending + color range and the Brutfuner square is still the best value, hands-down. I have a very hard grip though so that affects things.
Also a special nod to Kalour 280 - they aren't the best, but for the price, the number of colors you get can help with different shades without relying too heavily on layers and blends.

I have the full sets of Polychromos and Derwent Lightfast and for my needs as an illustrator they compliment each other well, the lightfast have the interesting shade and darker tones and the Polychromos has the punchy brights, I have a couple of open stock luminance pencils and yep I’m really wanting the full set of those too. For a beginner, the Polychromos is my recommendation for versatility and colour selection

Very interesting review - I'd love to see the more in-depth videos for all the different tests you did.
For the pencils I use, both professionally and in my hobby-time, I agree with what you've found. It is also reassuring to see that the pencils I have given to other people are pretty good too! 😊
I would add to be cautious if you want to display anything coloured with LYRA Rembrandt. Because I couldn't find any independent lightfast test information on the CURRENT set, I made swatches and put them in my window this Spring. NE facing, a little north of London.
Within 3 months, 20 had faded significantly (some completely lost all colour) and about half of the others were looking not-quite-as-they-were. Those have now (after around 6 months) also faded significantly.
The good news is that the colours that were good at 3 months have remained good.
AND one of the blues has the going-greener effect which would make for a beautiful sea colour. It changed after around 12 days, and changes back after a couple of weeks in the dark. 😊
Basically, if you want to colour in a book and then close the book LYRA Rembrandt are awesome. I thoroughly recommend them.
But if you want to hang the picture on your wall, either be okay with it fading fast or use a much smaller subset of the colours.
(Or you could mount it behind UV protective glass. 🤷‍♀️ But if I'm going to pay that much to create pictures then I'd prefer to spend the money on Lightfast and Luminance pencils!😊)
Lightfast vs Luminance really depends on the paper you are using and the effect you are after.
I have just finished an owl on Clairefontaine Pastelmat and used both for their different effects.
Luminance can be blended then rubbed smooth and buffed to a shine. In this case, a beautiful shiny purple might sky.
Lightfast will layer and layer in many small strokes and they will remain visibly separate strokes rather than colour-blending together; all one, cohesive unit, but with a lovely soft texture overall. This was perfect for the owl's feathers.
That said, I could have achieved both effects with either pencil. It was just easier to use the different sets to get the two effects.
On smooth watercolour paper, again the effects are more-easily-achieved with one or the other. But they are both brilliant as standalone sets, and can both create all the effects I want.
Generally, I use them both together - because then I have more nuances of colour to play with and mix! 😊

I bought the full 72 Derwent Chromaflow set (Direct from Derwent) as soon as it came out as I had already tried out the earlier 12 set (with a parrot looking to my right) and I was impressed. There was one slight problem in that a small number of the pencils had multiple breaks in the leads (Derwent sent replacements). Derwent also did an offer to celebrate the Queen's 70th jubilee and I was able to buy the 72 set of lightfast for half price.
While both pencils are really nice to use, I don't actually prefer one to the other. There is a bit of difference on how they feel in use and there are some days when I just use the Chromaflow, some days the Lightfast and some days I use both (it depends on my mood).
From all your hard work Sarah, it's good to see that I haven't wasted my money.

I definitely want to see a video on lightfastness! I have gotten back into drawing traditionally, and I want to make art that lasts, especially if I sell it. I have started learning to color with acrylic ink as the base flat color, since it is permanent with good lightfastness, and adding details on top with prismacolor premier pencils.
I bought the pencils after watching your videos! Thank you so much for helping me pick the right ones, I love them so much! I didn't have trouble adjusting to using them either, it was almost magical how they just worked so easily and beautifully.
I'm really curious how well colored pencils last over time. As for acrylic ink, I accidentally spilled some teal Amsterdam acrylic ink on our cement porch back in August 2019, and through the blazing sun, rain, and snow, it hasn't faded, it's just been scraped off from wear so there's not much left. But what's left is super vibrant! I'm still amazed!
