  • Can't believe its been almost 2 years since this movie came out but we are finally getting around to watching it! We finally found out why we don't talk about Bruno! This movie took us on a trip to Madrigal, Colombia, and we can't wait to go back! We loved the sights, the sounds, all the beautiful colors, and all the different characters with their unique abilities!

What i understand, is that Mirabel is the next Abuela, i mean, she will take her role of leading and keeping the family together when she is gone. Just like Abuela, she didnt have any gift, because she doesnt need to. Also if you realise, when the Casita is rebuilded, it says hi with the window and there is Mirabel greeting back, mirroring the same scene that the grandmother had when Casita first appeared and said hi with the window too. Her gift is herself, being just what the family needs for the future generations. She acts as a bridge to the future, but also a glue to the family, to the miracle.

Very true. I was surprised that many people thought the spectrum of colors in this family and community was something the film created just to show diversity. Having spent some years in Miami, I knew that LatinX people come in every skin color and hair texture.
Most important animated film Disney has ever made, imo. They gave children of all shapes and colors someone to identify with on screen, and also educated some folks.

It's crazy to think that some people thought that the diversity in this movie was made up! Growing up in the NYC Metro area, we definitely have a great mixture of people and cultures so maybe that's why we don't have a narrow view of the world. But also in DR (similar to Colombia), there is a huge mix of skin tones and hair textures!

@@BAUScoupleReacts As a 100% Puerto Rican born and raised in the Bronx, I definitely agree. I have the typical Hispanic/Latina looks just like my father did but my mother, born and raised in Puerto Rico to Puerto Rican parents (though there was some Spaniard mixed in there as typical) was born looking more Irish/Scottish than Hispanic. White skin, red hair and green eyes. She had three siblings. Her older brother and younger sister were both also pale skinned but her older brother has blue eyes and dirty blonde hair. Her younger sister has hazel-green eyes and was born with white blonde hair that changed to a dirty blonde as she got older. Hovever, her younger brother had the typical dark hair, eyes and skin of what people consider Hispanics/Latinos to look like and was often thought to be adopted because neither of my maternal grandparents had the typical looks. My granfather had dirty blonde hair, blue eyes and white skin. My grandmother had hazel brown eyes, medium brown hair and very light, but not white, skin. My uncle actually stood out for being the only one that had the "typical" coloring, lol. I've heard this from other people but I tend to agre with this train of thought. Abuela was the catalyst for the villain but the true villain of the story is generational trauma that is past down thru generations, much like Coco. Because Abuela witnessed the violence that she did and losing her husband to it she was desperately pushing everyone so hard to keep that danger at bay without realizing that she was causing her family their own kinds of trauma. I really like how their gifts fit their personalities but also kind of showcased how dangerous that trauma can be for people such as Tia Peppa were her mood effected the weather and she was always on edge and checking herself to try to avoid bad weather. And I will say that since I do really enjoy cooking I would like to have the power of Mirabel's mom. To do something you enjoy and it actually helps people would be such an amazing feeling.

Its kinda funny how surprising the diversity in Encanto is.
Bc its not "fitted" to any agenda. Thats just how latin america is.
Like if you did animation in pre-coloniziation Britain or medieval Poland you will except it willbe just white all over.
Or, for example, in India the complection will be expected.
Whats great in encanto is how natural they made the diversity.
No one talks about race differences in the film. They look bit different but they share one culture and community.
Thats what children need to see. People of various skin tones living together in piece

I dont know if it's been pointed out but in the vision of who to hug they thought it was Isabella but it was probably Abuela who looked very much like Isabella when she was young. Which makes the whole engagement worse. Because Isabella didnt want the engagement but she was being matched with him because Abuela was living through her. It was 100% Isabella. Mirabel sees and embraces everyone, from Antonio with his little worries, to Abuela with her years of pain.

The running theory for Mirabel's gift is that she has been chosen to be the next Matriarch. Basically, she's supposed to be Abuela's replacement for when Abuela either passes or retires. Hence why she never received a gift and she's the only one. Her age is just right too, she's an early teen now, and Abuela is already old. By the time she's an adult Abuela should be reaching that age where it's time to pass on the reigns.

The animal that you noticed sitting in the middle of Bruno’s vision, the one not caring and not moving, is a capybara. The capybara is the worlds largest rodent species. It is about the size of a medium dog and mostly aquatic in the Amazon. It is rather like an overgrown Guinea pig. They are just sweet in nature and nonplussed about everything. 😁There are even some rodents you can appreciate.

The constant focus on her not being as special because she didn't get a gift, her family excluding her and stressing that things have to go perfect. Her parents love her but still didn't believe her or take up for her more strongly against Abuela. The entire time I just kept saying "but she's a CHILD!"

I was put on the highest horse by my entire family, everything I did had to be perfect: grades, attitude, even friends had to be the best of the best (which is why I wasn't allowed to have any growing up). Every little detail had to be posh and pristine....and it was never enough. I have the complex so hammered into my skull, that life without my family took me a full decade to feel "normal", I still don't know if my thoughts, and even personality, are my own.
On a side note, I WAS disappointed they got their gifts back at the end after the lesson of "you can be special without them" 😅

So I read that some youtube theorists speculated that Mirabel DID get a gift, its just not flashy like everyone elses. Basically she got the same gift as their grandma, choosing what gift each new member of the family gets. Previously, the grandma subconsciously selected what she thought they needed most. The writers confirmed it. Mirabel is the successor and everyone misunderstood.

This is interesting, especially as Antonio received a gift that was about communication. • @csanders
    @csanders 8 місяців тому +17

After watching the movie a few times I created my own theory on why Mirabel didn’t get any powers.
When they were given their gifts Pepa, Bruno and Julieta were already born. The grandchildren however inherited their gifts and also inherited Abuela’s trauma, each grandchild up to Mirabel inherited a gift based upon Abuela’s fears. In order by age, Isabela got the gift of perfection because that’s who Abuela felt she (and her family) needed to present themselves at all times. Dolores got the gift of hearing because Abuela was afraid of what the people would be whispering behind her back if/ when she (the family wasn’t perfect). Louisa got the gift of strength because Abuela’s felt she needed to be strong enough to carry the town out of pressure of being given the magic of the candle that provided the people a sanctuary in their time of need. Camilo got the gift of shapeshifting because felt the need to be/ provide whatever the people needed at any given time which is why the family were such servants to the people. Mirabel didn’t get a door because as Abuela said she’d lost sight of who the miracle was for so basically Mirabel was Abuela’s physical representation of all of her fears.
The candle in my theory was never the source of the power. I do believe the candle represented Pedro (Abeulo) and the reason the flame never went out was because it was a representation of Alma (Abuela) hold on to him and the past. Once Mirabel confronted Abuela not only did the house fall apart but there was a divide in the whole town (even the mountain cracked) and when Mirabel ran away she ran to the site where Abuela’s lost her husband because she needed to confront and release that trauma in order to move forward. That’s why after rebuilding the house and handing Mirabel the doorknob, Bruno says “you’re the real gift kind, now let us in” and once she inserts the knob they all get their powers back despite no longer having the candle. Mirabel’s gift is like her mom’s only Juileta’s gift was physical healing, Mirabel’s gift is internal healing, she’s not only the key to mend her family and holding them together but also the town.
I did also see a theory of the beauty, the brains and the brawn. Isabela being the beauty, Luisa being the brawn, and Mirabel being the brains

The real villain was generational trauma all along. But I like how Abuela's trauma was caused by Columbia's specific history of near-constant civil war for over a century and the waves of refugees that it's produced. Their village has had it easy, protected by the surrounding mountains, but she remembers how bad things can get.
Another nation-specific Easter egg is the yellow butterfly, often used as a symbol by Columbian writer Gabriel García Márquez, who wrote stories set in the real world but where magic occasionally takes place. There are probably dozens more little "nods" to things specific to Columbian history throughout the movie that I don't know about.

In that moment Abuela became the "candleholder" or others use the name "Miracle Holder." She was the one to keep the family and, even more so the town together. Eventually when the family got bigger and more complicated, the "foundation" the Encanto was built on grew unstable. Because Abuela was always from the very beginning full of greif for her husband, and fear that she may lose her home and/or family members again. Her fear was amplified more and more by Bruno's constant visions of the future. Until finally, Bruno had the vision of Mirabel. I don't think Abuela saw the vision judging by her reaction when Mirabel found it. Bruno disappeared. This upset Abuela much deeper than the other fsmily members. This was her son. She felt like she had lost another family member.
My theory and personal head-canon is that Casita, is Pedro's spirit incarnate. And the candle was in Pedro's lantern when he gave himself up. That's the item that was enchanted. Pedro's spirit in Casita (to be referred to as Casita from this point on) could tell that the magic was fading LONG before the family members even noticed. That's why Mirabel wasn't given a gift. Because she would be the next "Miracle Holder" after Abuela, because without a magical power she'd be able to investigate the familily's issues more closely and more determinedly. But it goes deeper than that.
Notice at the end of the movie, the candle doesn't come back. They don't show you the candle. Well, do you think any of the family members could've put that doorknob on and gotten the magic back? No. Only Mirabel. Why? Because Casita used Mirabel's door when she turned 5 to imbue her with just enough of the candle's magic, so that when the candle inevitability went out and the house fell, the Encanto, the mountains that sprung up to encase the town, would stay intact. And if Mirabel had led the family down the right path, the magic could be restored without the need for a candle. And eventually another kid in the Madrigal family will watch their door disappear and they won't be sad. They will know that that means they are the next "Miracle Holder."
    BOOM!!!!!!
If you have any questions please reply. I know I've left some stuff out.

There are fan theories that say that Mirabel is the next holder of the candle for the future generations. As you can see, Abuela doesn’t have a power either, she just holds the candle. And since she won’t be around forever, she needs someone to watch over the candle for her.

Idk I think the magic was disappearing because it was time for a new successor to be born. Since abuela was too old already. No one is to be blamed. Maybe that's just the cycle and since this is their first time, they don't know it yet. Also I don't want to say Abuela's past justified what she had done but it is understandable where she is coming from. And I cannot imagine her feelings losing her husband like that and that song is a perfect fit. I almost cry every single time watching that scene 🥲 I love this movie so much 10/10 definitely for me 🥰

"...she's the only one not in the picture..."
Though, to be fair, that was _Mirabel's_ choice. Alma called everyone over and trusted everyone to sor themselves out. Mirabel didn't. She _could have_ been in the picture if she wanted, they weren't _excluding_ her, they were just focused on Antonio because it was his big day. They didn't even do a check to make sure everyone was in the picture before it was shot, so if _anyone_ had not been there, they wouldn't have noticed.
"...that's gotta be a terrible gift, you hear everything..."
    Possibly more than you think:
    ua-cam.com/video/Xz2oowy5JxY/v-deo.html
    "...she's so emotional..."
    Volatile... like the weather itself.
"...I don't remember the name of that animal..."
    Capybara.
    "...she's so, like, militant..."
In the early days of the encanto, 50 years before the events of this movie, that was probably a _good_ thing. Needed in order for the group, and her family, to survive. Today? Not so much.
    Great reaction!
    Have a nice day!

What do you you mean they 'forgot' her? If they'd done a roll call and mentioned everyone but her, maybe. If they'd all carefully looked around to ensure everyone was there, sure. But otherwise... like I said... they just trusted that this 15 year old girl who is _already_ largely doing things without being told (no one told her to set the table that morning, she just got up and _did_ it, on her own, same with other helpful things, like decorating and so on) was able to handle her own positioning like all the _others_ did. It's not like Mirabelle, to that point, was shown as being at all _shy_ or likely to not speak up, at least over something minor.

A good starting point could be the song " Cabin in the Wata" by Walter Ferguson

Bruno assumed the final vision was undecided but it was all true. The miracle needed to die to be reborn. Abuella never had a power but was like the leader of the family. Maybe Mirable didn't get a power as she was destined to be the next leader. It also helped when the house was collapsing, they all tried to save the candle using their gifts which all failed. Mirabelle never had one and the house was protecting her and helping her to get to the candle.
Ultimately the movie has no villain. Just a family that needed to resolve their issues.
I'd have Isabella's power. She can literally grow any plant instantly. If you really needed food she could grow it quickly without any resources. She named many types of plants in her song so she always knew so much about them but was stuck only growing roses

The songs are all very well written and the choreography is amazing.

The most popular theory is that Mirabel is to be the next matriarch after Abuela. Abuela doesn't have a power herself either but has a strong connection to the house. Casita protected Mirabel and seemed to listen to her. Abuela's room will some day be Mirabel's. There needs to be a balancing force to the magic and that will be Mirabel

I gotta admit this movie is too depressing for me, like Up depressing, eventhough my friends somehow don't agree... it's a good movie! just, Abuela was too much for me. she was probably just meant to be the sub-villain but everything she did made me think deeper. however, thinking on it, what if the gifts where also a lesson in disguise?! everyones' gift could be a way of saying they need to do the opposite or learn to be better adjusted? i don't know how to quite say it but: if the aunt wasn't so hairtrigger and realised that sometimes rainy days are a good thing, then she wouldn't be so superficially happy, being happer overall. [also caused by Abulea].
