- In this movie reaction we are watching Encanto (2021) for the first time!! The Madrigals are an extraordinary family who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a charmed place called the Encanto. Except for Mirabel, the Encanto's enchantment has bestowed a special gift on everyone of the family's children. When she realizes that the enchantment around the Encanto is suddenly in jeopardy, she may become the Madrigals' last hope.

Mirabel didn't get a gift, but she was the gift the family needed.
I think that was a lot of people's assumption that she would eventually get a gift, but what people don't realize until the end is that you don't need the traditional gift in order to be special. Your siblings might be prodigies or be talented in some way, but not everyone functions that way and are glossed over. However, this isn't to say that those talents aren't curses as well because of the added expectations of family pushing your body.
@@rich355 Yeah lot expected her to get a gift at the end, but i think that would have undercut the message. She didn't need a gift to be special. She already was special, just by being herself. Giving her a power i think would have hurt that message

@@rich355 perfectly said. This is written better than the Legend of Korra, where the show has a similar character to Mirabel, Bumi. Bumi's siblings are able to bend elements , but like his uncle, he wasn't given that ability, and Bumi felt like he let his father(who was an avatar and a bender) by being his first born child that wasn't gifted with bending.
Encanto does a better job making the character value themselves for who they are and not what they weren't given.
Whereas Bumi was turnt into a bender with his inner turmoil solved by something tangible instead of finding value in himself
Anthony hit the nail on the head though. Abuela’s “gift” is different from the others, she is the keeper of the miracle and facilitates both Casita and everyone else’s gifts, and Mirabelle is the inheritor of that gift, because it always has to exist for the rest of the magic to work.
You guys were right I believe - Mirabel didn’t get a gift because she’s the next generation of Abuela - the bearer of the miracle.

I like to think she'll take Alma's place after she's dead, but I don't like to think that's precisely the reason she wasn't given a gift. She just didn't happen to get one, that's all.
A popular theory is that Mirabel did receive a power during the ceremony: she became a human embodiment of the miracle candle. The magic that empowers the family is strongest when she's feeling hopeful, and at its weakest when she's feeling without hope. And at the end she does get a door, but it's the front door.
That’s what I’m thinking too! I’m positive about this theory. Mirabel didn’t get a door, she got the whole house.
She was the foundation of familia Madrigal, always helping and supporting her family, even though they didn’t appreciate her!

Never apologize for sharing your emotions during the reactions. We watch because we want to see that it hits you the same way it hits us! My wife is Colombian and balled at the trailer when it came out last year. She watches this all the time and listens to the music almost every day. It's so important to her that there's now a Disney movie based on her family's country and culture with people that look like her. edit: Oh yea, and I still tear up at several scenes even though i've seen it probably half a dozen times all the way through (and another half a dozen through reactions like these).

The part of the Abuela is the hardest for me as a Colombian, it shows (a little) how hard is the forced displacement here in our country, something that has been around for decades and has affected millions of people, its really heartbreaking, but at the same time im thankful that is shown in a movie of Disney
I feel the same. My father is from Venezuela, and grew up with countless civil wars around him. And even still to this day.

He might be twice my age, but he is my son! I will protect him at all costs!
The saddest thing about Bruno’s plate is when his two sisters celebrated their birthday at the dinner table (remember they were triplets) and him and his rats would just listen to them celebrate their birthday and he was all alone in the walls. I literally ugly cried when I read a comment similar to this on another reaction video.
Dolores heard "the rats" in the wall, talking. Rats don't talk... it was Bruno talking to the rats. And the "sound of falling sand" was him repairing the cracks, and saying "Sana Sana Colita de Rana." She never told anyone.
Imagine his first years inside the walls. The isolation, loneliness, longing for his family, all of them just 20 cm away
I'm convinced Dolores is the one who gave him food through the crack of the portrait.
@@blameitondanny he also went to the kitchen himself. If you pay attention to the background during Dolores' first part in We Don't Talk About Bruno, he is seen walking behind them on both levels.
And Mirabell's gift was listening to everyone, getting them to talk about their feelings, and helping to heal the generational trauma. Grandma's children needed to be reunited with each other and with her. When everyone splits up and goes their own way without talking about things, no healing can happen
Yes, that part where Abuela tells her story and "Dos oruguitas" starts to play it really got in the heartstrings. Amazing reaction as always guys!!

I cried the whole movie. I cried when Antonio asked for mirabel, when Mirabel asked for a miracle, the surface pressure song, at bruno saying he wasn't helpful, at Abeula's story and when she got her doorknob💀. I was a mess

My wife LOST IT when casita was Falling apart but still trying to protect the family
One change I would have made is instead of Bruno breaking through the wall, is Casita ripping a hole open herself, with a sound effect of breaking plaster and stone and wood that sounded a lot like a scream of pain.
@@Mark73 if I'm not wrong, casita only directly helped in saving Mirabel. Coz remember the scene when a door flew and was about to hit Antonio but Felix was the one to save him.
@Rhea D'souza Felix saved Antonio yes (Also WTF was he doing just sitting there as the house fell) but the house saved Isabela and Camilo when their powers gave out and gently lowered them to the ground rather than letting them crash 2 stories. It obviously helped mirabel more but mirabel also asked for more and was there longer.
Oh ya when casita protected mirabel and in its last moments waved goodbye to mirabel i was sobbing
Something I really love is how they tell you right at the beginning what happened to Abuella, through her telling Mirabel, but the animation of it is distant and subdued. It feels like how Mirabel imagined it as it was told to her as a child, no clear image of death, the big shiny miracle and then everything's happy. And then when they show it again near the end of the film you see the real version - there's a sword in the horseman's hand, Abuella is far more devastated and lost, and then when the miracle is given she immediately has to take responsibility not just for her triplets but also for this whole group of people who are suddenly looking to her to lead them because of the miracle and she doesn't have any time to process her grief.

I watched this on a whim, thinking it would be a cute fun movie. Did not expect to get absolutely wrecked by the last 15 minutes. I was also ugly crying haha

One of the saddest details about bruno is that he was living in the walls for 10 years. Absolutely heartbreaking
Seeing his little table with the painted dish just broke me.
"The stars don't shine, they burn" line is so good. From the beginning, everyone's focused on how amazing the Madrigal family appeared, not noticing what's going on inside.
By the end, the light of the stars are still there, but the combustion and reactions inside them are also known.
A lot of people think that when Abuela talks to Pedro about how vulnerable they are, it means that she knew all along and was gaslighting Mirabel that she was seeing things. She doesn't know yet, no one does. She's referring to the larger "everything can be taken away in a moment" type of vulnerability. Just the idea of Casita cracking, whether she believes it or not, is terrifying for someone who's fled their home once already. Tack onto that Bruno leaving, so there's also the fear of losing more family and the feeling of security that comes with having loved ones near. So yea, Abuela is well aware of how vulnerable their family is, but she's just focused on external threats in that moment.
This is what I was thinking. It wasn't that she knew what was going on, it was that she really had no idea what would happen. Her life was tumultuous.
She expected one baby, got three, she, Pedro, and her village had to run from sudden conflict, Pedro is killed trying to help them escape, magic explodes out of nowhere and suddenly she has to maintain a miracle, a family, and a village on her own, her kids and their kids get powers she has to teach them to control without even knowing what they will be until they appear, a seemingly random grandkid does not get powers, her only son up and leaves and no one knows where. And still she never even knew what fueled the magic and when or if it was gonna run out.
Every time she has tried to settle something huge happened. While it was no excuse for the way she controlled her family, I can see why she couldn't move on and heal. She never stopped solving crisis after crisis.
I mean she asked Bruno to look into the future to see the fate of the magic and house and then Bruno chose to leave. She probably assumed it wasn't anything good.

It was born from her grief
I'm Colombian, and this movie felt like a beautiful representation of the diversity or my country. Abuela's story was so touching to me because it's based on real violence a lot of families have experienced here.
the story of the butterfly and allowing the next generation to fly is the whole point. abuela needed safety to raise her family, the rocks rising as a cocoon to keep everyone protected. seeing the rocks crack open towards the end that surrounds the village .. is allowing the butterfly to finally thrive. that was mirabels gift. shes the continuation of the line and the savior.
Honestly, the only ones who really treated Mirabel that different were the Abuela, and her sister - but the sister didn't treat her badly because of her lack of a gift, but because of the pressure she was under to be 'perfect'. Her other family either adored her, like Luisa, Antonio, and her parents, or just treated her like just another family member, like Dolores and Camilo.

Yes yes yes! Exactly! I love that so much! They're perfect with their imperfections, and it's shown in a framed family photo. So good! Also, I love that Mirabelle and Bruno are in the middle. That just makes me so happy!

I almost ugly cried when Alma scolded at Mirabel for hurting the family
Bruno was alienated because of his power. They couldn't get the idea that he was just seeing the future and he was informing them of what's gonna happen. They thought he was weird and creepy, basically drove him to hiding. I hated that family from the get-go lol thank god for that ending.
Look I sobbed into my couch pillow the first time I watched it and I will forever sob. This movie shows that family can be the reason you separate but the reason you come together too. If you suffer from generational trauma, you are loved regardless of what you think. ❤️
I feel like mirabels gift is actually her connection to the Casita itself and she was meant to be abuelas successor to care for the candle

I watched this movie like 5 times with my kids and slowly understood the candle that holds the family together with its magic IS the grandfather and his magic through the house starts to crack slowly with how they start to treat Bruno and then how they treat mirabelle. He takes their gifts away because it has clouded their judgement and love for one another and so through his own magical way he brings them back together. No power is stronger then LOVE! Beautifully done Disney take a bow.

My favorite thing about Isabela's song is that the majority of the plants she truly wants to grow are so far from "perfect".
Jacarandas are invasive and don't let other plants eat, strangling figs kill the trees they grow on, vines can destroy buildings if they grow on them, cacti are sharp and painful, sundew are indeed carnivorous, and tabebuia has flowers that are highly poisonous.
Palma de cera isn't dangerous, but it is known as the wax palm. The wax of the trunk can be used to make candles. :)

I'll be honest that watching Encanto made me really homesick.
I haven't been to Colombia since 2017 and had it not been for the pandemic, I would have been able to visit and see my family there...thankfully times are different and I can't wait to see everyone this year.

OMG, yes! This is probably one of my new favorite movies! I also ugly cried, don’t worry. Also, can we talk about how amazing the music is in this movie?? Overall a really, really solid piece of media! I saw it on Saturday and the songs have been stuck in my head since.
And not just even the Lin-Manuel Miranda stuff, but the whole fucking Soundtrack is amazing! The musical motif of the film, oh my God! Do you know how many times I've listened to the piece Antonio's Voice? So many!
each family member represents a different region of Colombia. like the one always makes it rain represents Bogotanos, as it is cold, direct and harsh but essential. the kid represents the Amazon, the sister with the flowers represnts los Paisas , very beautiful but misleading, or misunderstood, etc ect. Girl, I started ugly crying after the family photo in the beginning when I first watched it. I ugly cried watching you guys react to Abuela's flashback. So no shame in crying at all. Especially to this movie.
I have this theory that after Pedro was killed by the guerilla, the miracle happened and his soul was somehow transmitted to the candel so that he could always watch over his family... and Bruno, Julieta and Pepa received the first gifts through Pedro's goodbye kiss - like a blessing. I also like to think that Casita came alive because it was, in a way, granted Pedro's life force. So just like Pedro has been protecting his family, Casita was carrying on his will.
I think his spirit may be the house. But I think that the miracle itself is divine intervention of some sort. I don't see how a simple human spirit could lift whole mountains and create a whole house.
The slow change in expression as she realised "Oh no, a soft song during a flashback and it includes a couple getting together. I know my Disney and Pixar, I know the tears are coming."
Personally the moment that always hits me from this movie is the encouragement that the family have for Mirabel at the last song (all of me), more specifically the lyrics
"We see how bright you burn
We see how brave you've been
Now, see yourself in turn"
I still love finding Bruno jamming out to his own song during Dolores' verse
Edit: I found it interesting how Isabela started saying "I'm fine, I'm fine, I'm fine" at the end of Bruno's song so you know exactly how she feels about the engagement
I think it's also interesting that both Isabela and Dolores start saying "I'm fine, I'm fine, I'm fine" at the same time when talking about the engagement
Isabella says "I'm fine(×3) and I'll be fine.",
and Dolores says 'I'm fine." They are each convincing herself that She'll be fine after the engagement(and obviously marrige)/She's fine about not having the man of her dreams.

I think you hit right on the money - Mirabel IS the new candle, and Abuela's successor. She does not need a gift, because she is literally the new gift.
24 year old with two kids it’s crazy never thought I’d every cry in a Disney movie but the dad sacrificing himself and the way they animated abuelas reaction it really got to me in tears🤧
Mirabelle is actually the miracle. She was the gift! I can't stop singing all the soundtracks in this movie! Disney movies are the best!

Its definately gonna be a cycle, Abuela lost her family and her love for her family brought a miracle that could protect and save their future. Mirabel loved her family and when she thought it was threatened she helped put it back together and made a new miracle to keep her family safe all over again
Tbh, i think the magic planned it all along. Like the magic was like " Oh, no family closure? Sure, lemme just make the house go down and make you lose all tour miracles until you all learn your lessons."

I went to see this with four of my friends and we all cried pretty much from start to finish. Loved that the section was just called "Tears." 😄 That would have just been the whole movie for me.
This has to be one of my favorite movies. The entire family was entertaining. Felix and Pepa were my favorites along with Bruno and Dolores.
It broke me that when abuela told her story she shielded some of the pain but at the end when the story is shown she was so much more broken when Pedro died
Imagine how Abuela used euphemisms when she needs to retell the story of how she lost her husband to her children and grandchildren. That would be very tormenting and requires a lot of guts and strength. Your reactions are nice.
Grandma's mistake is that she valued the gifts more than the people and relationships.
Mirabel valued people more than the gifts precisely because she didn't have a gift.
So not getting a gift was the whole point of the story, even if it's normal to wish she got a gift.
Bruno is played by John Leguizamo, one of my favorite character actors.
I love the she hulk sister. She has the beat musical number, and when she lost her strength her meltdown was pretty funny.
I’ve been on a kick watching reactions and therapist breakdowns of Encanto. One of my favorite theories I read in the comments is that Empathy is Mirabel’s gift. She learned how hear, feel and see her family members. She learned how to react appropriately to everyone around her so they felt safe. This is specially shown through “Surface Pressure,” “What Else Can I Do?,” and her relationship with Antonio. Her sisters and cousin felt safe enough around her to show their anxieties and confide in her when they felt the stress of keeping the magic alive. In fact, one of my favorite scenes is when Antonio says that he can’t receive his gift without her. He needs her comfort, her presence, to feel at ease. To walk down that isle. Mirabel is able to foster that closeness and security with her family members in a way that hasn’t happened before. She sees the ways in which people need to be heard in order to felt seen, and acts with that in mind. That, in my opinion, is her gift.
No matter how many times I watch this film I will always cry.

Her gift was the new house at the end of the movie, when she put the doorknob on it was the same kind of "sparkle" around the front door as when the kids normally get a gift from their door.

Lin-Manuel Miranda mentioned in an interview that when he pitched an early version of Dos Oruguitas, people were crying in the zoom meeting and told him he needed to keep writing the song.

I ugly cried the first time I watched this, too... and I was in the theater! It was even worse the second time, once it came on Disney+. It's a beautiful story, and I loved your reactions to it!
I believe that the not getting gifts was going to continue with Antonio, but at that moment that Mirabel chose to walk with Antonio it made the gift stronger again to give gifts (just like how hugging Isabela strengthened the gift). I bet that if Antonio would have walked alone to the door, he wouldn't gotten a gift as well.

The cracks in the house were the crack of the relationship of the family, they weren't who they wanted to be. Until mirabel fixes the family (her gift all along.)

Mirabel's gift was the magic itself, notice how when she's feeling upset the house starts to crack and break, because she's the one to take abuela's place as the keeper of the miracle when she passes away, also notice how mirabel sounds like miracle.
honestly i cried literally the entire movie not even just the grandma part. i still tear up watching the cut down version in reactions of some parts so yeah. it's an emotional one.
I loved how adorable she was when she said " OH HOW CUTE! but sad and tragic"

There's a theory that I support:
It's the theory where Mirabel didn't get a gift because she (in theory) is the embodiment of the candle.
As (some) people saw in the movie, each person got an outfit that matches their Gift.
As an example, Dolores has sound waves, Isabella has flowers (I think), etc.
As seen in the movie, the candle has a butterfly on it. Guess what Mirabel has on her dress?
*BUTTERFLIES!*

After the song "Waiting on a Miracle," Mirabel was sad, so the house nearly broke.
And when Isabella and Mirabel hugged, the candle got brighter.
But when Abuela and Mirabel hugged, the house got re-built and Casita came to life once more.

When we're first told the story of the miracle Abuela's reaction to losing her husband isn't as severe as it is when Mirabel sees it because she instantly had to lead everyone who escaped with them so she started bottling everything up. The only time we see her true reaction and her mourning is when she's realised what her desire to prove to herself that she earned the miracle did to her family

Mirabel is the candle. It was the candle that brought magic and miracle to the house the first time with Abuela .. And in absence of the candle, Mirabel, the human candle fixes it.The whole house is her room. And The reason Mirabel didn't get a gift is because she is the gift.
I don't know why but the door going away as Mirabella touch it just makes me cry. It breaks my heart and I feel so sorry for her. I mean she was 5 and the way she looked to her grandma for answers. I just bawl every time! This and at the end with the song and death of the grandfather.

I cry at that same part every time I watch it, and I cried at this watching you cry! It is such a good movie. That part in particular just is depicted in such a heart-rending way, especially Abuela's scream when her husband is killed. Even silent, with the music atop, it is so devastating. That just gets me.

I subscribe to the theory that Mirabel will, at some point, be the grandmother's successor.
The Bruno part made me cry so much, I 100% imagined him as a creepy warlock type character.
Mirabel's gift is empathy. She can feel how others feel, and because of that she helps people to heal. All the movie is about her trying to understand the deeper trauma of her family. And one by one she helps them overcome it.
What happened at the end there was Mirabel is the new candle, The source of the families magic, because shes the "heart" of it

this is my first time watching your channel. but watched Encanto many times. I was crying right along with her. Somehow seeing her feeling those emotions made me relive feeling them for the first time.
A popular theory is that Mirabel was destined to take over from Abuela Alma as guardian of the Miracle. Another is that any of the kids or grandkids could have taken over but it wasn't until Mirabel that the Casita realized that Alma had lost her way, cherishing the magical gifts of her family over her family themselves.
My personal theory: if you notice, Abuela Alma had no active power. In fact she may not have had a power at all. The Miracle itself could have either been her desire to protect her babies or Abuelo Pedro's sacrifice, or a representation of their love, or a combination of any or all three. But other than the candle itself being the Miracle, all she did was take care of it.
If you notice her room isn't an extraordinary larger on the inside bedroom. It's a standard room it just has her glowing name and picture on the door frame with the candle. But she herself has no active power. I will say that she has the deepest connection to Castia. You see that when the house initially comes into being and it waves it's shutter at her, and she waves back (which is actually mirrored at the end when the magic returns and Casita waves it shutter at Maribel, and Maribel waves back.)
Combined with the fact that other than Abuela Alma, Mirabal is the only one to actively talk to the house. Like the house response to the other people but they don't actively talk to it and it doesn't seem to respond as personally as it does with Alma and Maribel.
I think that Casita actually understood that Alma was losing her way but had to find the right person to take over. Obviously the house can see inside of a person's psyche in the way grants gifts. Isabella was really grateful and might have had an affinity for plants even before she really expressed it, Isabella was emotionally strong and also probably active possibly. We definitely know that It knew about Antonio's connection to the animals which was established earlier because Maribel knew about Antonio's connection to animals hence her gift of the stuff Jaguar. It is quite possible that on her 5th birthday when she went to receive her special room the Casita actually realized that Maribel's defining trait was...empathy. Some say any kid could have been it, but I disagree, partly because if so, Antonio should have also been "giftless" to really drive home to Alma what was up. But he wasn't. Yes he displays empathy, but I'd say he was taught that by his loving cousin. She just embodies and exudes that trait.
Miracle is an empath, and fills the caregiver role in the family. We see this in the way she actually has pride in her family, extolling their virtue to the town kids. She goes out of her way, even without having a gift, to assist. Yes, some of that is her trying to prove herself but the majority of it is just her being Maribel. The way she embroiders all of her families icons and powers on her dress to represent her family. The way she was able to understand Louisa's burden and went out for a way to try to say hey it's okay if you put some that down. Or when in the end when she realizes that her eldest sister had her own pressures of being perfect and was able to reconcile with her, setting aside the animosity that she had towards her for being the "perfect, golden child."
When Alma finally breaks down and admits that she lost her way Maribel didn't rub her nose in it she was there to embrace and hold that program mother and say hey basically we all make mistakes but without you we wouldn't have had this and I finally see you I see that you went through so much and you're by yourself and you were just trying your best and I accept that I accept your heartfelt apology and I'm not going to hold grudges we're going to move forward and fix things. All of this is why the Casita chose Maribel to be the successor to Alma. And also they don't have to rely on a candle anymore The magic is within them that magic being love and empathy and compassion.
At the end miracle finally does get her door and I think it really strings that that's why she shouldn't have special room because of the entire house is her domain not just the house if you notice the magic went out completely into the environment into the town itself much like the first miracle that rose the rocks around the town. And if you look at the new door the design Maribel's for instance center with her hand outstretched to a well who's now behind her in a simple of that mental passing over and that Maribel is the one that is the heart, and future head, of the familia.
Her "room" is the whole of Casita, minus the interiors of the others rooms. And her bedroom, the nursery, is directly across from Alma's bedroom...the only two non special rooms. Ok, Alma had her glowing portrait, but... You'll notice on the rebuilt Casita, the doors glow, but have no names or portraits! Cuz they are all together, supporting each other on the front door! There is every possiblity that the nursery is now Maribel's room, and a new nursery will be built once there is need.
Last thought: I think Bruno's future vision was exactly that the house had to break and come back together when he was having it for the second time he didn't see the butterfly that was initially there I think until Maribel no one else was paying attention to what else was going on the vision just focusing on the negative stuff. Maribel saw the butterfly but then bring no said he didn't know where it was and all the things were out of order. So I really do think that the house needs to start cracking she had to reconcile with her sister the house to start healing the account or burn brighter the house would break apart again and then it would be rebuilt after the butterfly and she embraced and reconciled with her grandmother. In fact the house really start breaking apart whenever her and Alma would argue finally coming apart when they were really going at it. I think it's because it was tied so deeply to both of those women, and that the strain on their relationship was quite literally tearing the house apart. Ok, to be fair the strain on all the relationships was tearing the house apart. Like you saw the cracks starting heel up each time Maribel made inroads with family members. But it straight up broke when her and Abuela Alma were going head to head.
Perhaps this will set up a pattern in the family, that whenever it is getting close for that torch to be passed (for the now figurative candle of the miracle to be handed down) that the Casita will select the next highly empathic person to lead the Familia Madigral, and the next time when someone's door vanishes it won't be a horrible thing to be worried about and cause them to shun the child, but instead celebrate it and be like, "Wow! you are going to be the next guardian of the Miracle!"

My 4 year old son was obsessed with this movie for a week. Now for several more weeks it's my wife and I who are obsessed. Dealing with intergenerational trauma just resonates so much. We are also both memorizing the songs the way I used to have most of the lines to Aladdin memorized as a kid. Encanto has easily become my favorite Disney movie. I am so glad to see your reaction to it.
