Dude, I do not blame you for Abuela Alma. The moment I saw her keeping her secrets and seeing the family unhappy and 'perfect', I knew she was so...SELFISH AND INCONSIDERATE! It's always about what SHE wants! What sort of sick grandma refuses to listen and treat her family (specifically Mirabel) like trash?!

Two theories are that Mirabel didn't get a gift cause the candle could tell that Abuela was using her kids and grandkids without caring for them as people and not just their gifts. Or the other theory is that since Abuela doesn't have a gift and is the candle holder, that the next candle holder wouldn't have an ability either, Mirabel would become the new matriarch of the family and give the future generations their gifts.

The funny fact about the song 'We don't talk about Bruno' is that it is a madrigal(a together song) and it is sung by the family... Madrigal. Each person sings their piece first so you can hear each message and then when they prepare for dinner the full madrigal is sung. Lin-Manuel Miranda is a genius to have each person sing in a different tone hight so that when put together you get a three layer madrigal. There is a youtube about the madrigal and how it is layered.

Camilo’s shapeshifting abilities can be a serious lifesaver in cases like what was shown in the beginning of the movie, where he transforms into a baby’s mom and takes over caring for them while the mother sleeps/relaxes for a bit.

I don't think it was *just* Abuela who was causing the magic to end and the house to break, but it was the whole situation. Abuela was putting her husband's legacy ahead of her family, Mirabel wasn't seeing things from others' perspectives, the aunt blamed Bruno for her terrible wedding, the cousin was jealous of the sister and was okay with subtly trying to ruin her relationship, both sisters were feeling stressed and felt like they couldn't talk to anybody because of expectations, Bruno felt ostracized and useless.

I actually really liked Isabelas character. She seemed one dimensional princess at first like how Mirabel saw her. How we later learn how that was a facade that she put on in order to impress Abuela. She was expected to set the example for the rest of town and be the public image for the family. She was also pressured into marrying when she clearly wasn't interested. Abuela saw a lot of herself in Isa and most likely had expectations for her to be the next family monarch. This is
shown through young Abuela looking similar to Isabel. However Mirabel actually was falling into that role as she is seen to be a the glue that holds the family together. Also Isa was mean to Mirabel because she was actually jealous because she didn't have to live up to Abuelas expectations. However Isa was caught up in her own feelings to realize that Mirabel was struggling too.

Agreed. It's interesting when you get Isa's take on everything. It wasn't that she was trying to be mean to her sister. It was just that from her point of view, she was trying to do right by the family and Mirabel was messing it up by always getting into everything.

Isabela was excepted to marry a man she didn't like, get pregnant, and have children she never wanted.
She resigned herself to giving up her entire freedom for the family.
So in retrospect, her view was that Mirabel didn't have those expectations, but for some reason kept asking for "responsibilities"
Also what a lot of people seem to overlook is that when Isabela finally confesses that she doesn't want to get married, Mirabel just ignores her and is kinda rude brushing it aside.
Isabela was the one that opened herself up to possibilities. While Mirabel kept singing about hugging she sang about growing her power
The real meaning of the vision wasn't to get Isabela to like Mirabel, but for BOTH of them to get over their feud. Even though the miracle depended on it, Mirabel couldn't even care to make a real attempt at an apology.
I love Mirabel, but in that scene, she was honestly a brat, but because Isabela is the "princess character" people just gloss over the forced marriage part.

    • @MissConniePrincessOfGay
      @MissConniePrincessOfGay Рік тому +45

Oh, Mirabel was absolutely being a brat. She didn't want to make up with Isabella, and was only going along with it to fix things with the house/magic. But during the course of the song it's also clear that she began to understand Isa's trauma & suffering, and afterwards even stuck up for Isa against Abuella. Her intent going into the song was to get the interaction over with, but coming out of it she understood that she was wrong and that Isa isn't the "entitled princess" she thought she was.
Honestly, with the development & reveals given regarding Isabella, she's probably my second favorite character in the film after Luisa. We see how happy she is when she's allowed to just be herself following he miracle's rebirth. She's an entirely different person, and like with everyone affected by Abuela's overbearing insistence on perfection, she finally had a massive weight lifted off her shoulders allowing her to dump away all the negativity she had been giving to others as well.

Being a brat? I mean, that feels like an exaggeration. She was a little disingenuous, sure, but it’s not like she had no care.
Mirabel as a character had one glaring flaw throughout the movie; she lacked perspective. But, she grew, began to see that even those with a gift had it hard. That the people she was so jealous of had their own respective issues too. She tells Isabela she had changed her mind- she saw who she really was.
It’s not like their strained relationship was a one-way street either. We saw how antagonistic Isabela was towards Mirabel. Both sisters were envious of eachother. Not to mention Mirabel is a child. Of course there’s going to be some immaturity. Isabela, on the other hand, is not.

From how I see it, Mirabel is like Alma in that both are the current and future “matriarchs” of the family. They keep the family together and have the strongest influence on the casita. They don’t have specific and special powers like the rest of the family, rather their job is to lead the town/family and care for the miracle (candle/doorknob). They have the most influence on the house, and responds to them the most it seems, which is their “power”.
Mirabel’s door is the door of the Casita itself, the casita is her “room”.

Isa was told that she could do and be more powerful than Abuela was letting her be. Abuela was controlling Isa's power by making her be perfect. You can see it when she pluckd that little white flower out of her hair at breakfast. But as you all saw, it was only Isa and Delores that had anything nice to say about Bruno in the song. But the only adult in Casita that was hurting because Bruno was gone was Julieta. You see it after she and Pepa hug him how she is either touching him or near him. It’s very subtle but in the beginning it’s almost implied that the grandfather’s sacrifice influenced the miracle. We see in the end tho that the miracle was actually born out of the intense grief of Abuela following the sacrifice. She was forced to stay strong through a terrible loss because she had a family to take care of. This meant a lot of her processing of the loss went overlooked, resulting in her holding on too tight to her family now so not to lose them. Mirabelle was not given magic because the Miracle, the Candle, saw that Abuella began to depend on magic, wanting it more than her family, and her expectations became such that everyone in the family should have magic. And from a miracle for which she was grateful, it turned into a privilege that she was afraid of losing. And she forgot for what reason and why this miracle was given to them. For whom it was given.
Because, if you haven’t noticed, then she doesn’t really relate to family members who came from outside. I don't remember, for example, her talking to them at all.
Maybe this is not very moral in relation to Mirabelle, and the method itself is not the best, but this was a new miracle of salvation from the Candle, It created an exception to the rules in order to save the family. Because a family that values each individual member because of superpowers and only because of them - is not a very healthy family.

I don’t think it’s that, since Antonio still got his room. If it was as you said, Antonio wouldn’t have gotten it since they hadn’t fixed Alma’s problem. Rather, Mirabel is like Alma in that both their powers are the casita itself and are meant to lead the family and keep them together.
I don’t think what Mirabel did was any special exception. The family was breaking apart cuz the family was becoming dysfunctional due to the generational trauma. The candle became the doorknob in a way, both brought forth the magic, and were done so by the ppl who didn’t have magical gifts, but had their “gift” be the house itself and had the strongest influence on the casita

@@ma.2089 I said exactly that Mirabelle was created as a catalyst. And it continues to be, as a reminder that magic is not needed to be a family. If the magic just disappeared, then it wouldn't work, because there would be no focus, and without the focus, there would be no concrete conflict. If magic just disappeared, after Mirabelle and forever, then it would be grief and fear for everyone, including town residents, then it would not be a conflict within the family, which the family is able to resolve, which the family needs to resolve.
And children will continue to be born with magic after that story. And sometimes, rarely, perhaps without magic, to remind everyone of morality again.
As for Casita, she is not part of the miracle. In fact, she is a separate being, but she is not like the others. Not her powers depend on magic, but almost life. She died when the magic disappeared, and she returned in the same state later, with the realization of who she was and the memory of her family. But during the absence of magic, Kasita was also absent.
A miracle is either just a miracle. Or part of the folklore of another culture that I do not understand. Or really Abuella's husband.
And you are right in saying that the family was falling apart due to lies, masks and other things, but the catalyst is still Mirabelle, the sharpest and clearest mistakes are associated with her.
      - Do not accept a family member, but say that the family is important and everyone should be accepted.
      - Sacrificing a family member in many ways, while still saying that the family is the most important thing and you do everything for the family.
      - Expect the worst from a family member simply because of his peculiarities, and never listen to her, never take her side.
Neglecting the non-magical part of the family that came from other families is also bad. As well as shackling other family members in a chain of expectations. But it's not as serious as what happened with Mirabelle.
And with Bruno, whose situation is a reflection of Mirabelle's situation. But Bruno had a time when he was appreciated, and this time was longer. He had a gift. And Mirabelle was immediately put an end to.

Abuela's gift is different than the others - she's the caretaker of the casita. There's a popular theory saying that the reason why Mirabel didn't get a particular gift is because she'll be the next caretaker.
I know two things that support this theory:
    1. If you look closely, you'll notice that every member of the family has an element (?) of their gift on their clothes or accessories. Like, for example, Pepa has sun earrings and her gift is that her mood affects the weather. Now, there's a pattern or design of butterflies around the house and guess who's got butterflies on their clothes? Mirabel!
    2. When Mirabel was getting her gift at 5 or 6 years old, she didn't get it because, again, she's meant to be the successor of the house. One of you even mentioned that Abuela's "power" is that the casita follows or respond to her needs while Mirabel is also like that with them. Not to mention, at the end where Mirabel puts the knob and then the miracle returns right after? That should also be a telltale sign.
If you're asking “well, Abuela has her magic door. If Mirabel *is* the next caretaker, how come she doesn't get one?”
Possible reason why Mirabel didn't get her own magic door (yet) is because the casita or the miracle intentionally did that in order to protect her. If they had come to know early on that she'll be the next caretaker, for sure the pressure would be worse on her than on Isabela. However, the fate depends on her to save the miracle. She needed to be the one to help her family realize that their gift doesn't define their value.
Mirabel will probably only get her own magic door by the time Abuela passes the candle to her, which most likely be the same age when Abuela first met/had the miracle.

I personally love the theory that the house responds to not just the family's needs but also the entire town's needs. In the beginning, they needed infrastructure after being displaced so the first three kids became agriculture, healthcare, and future vision. When I view it from that lens, it's easy to see why Mirabel didn't get a gift: the family is fractured and none of the house's past attempts to get the family to communicate and change their dysfunctional behavior were working so Casita said: "alright tontos try to ignore this!" Which they can't and it actually results in a better family dynamic for everyone; something they desperately needed.

Mirabel is the candle. It was the candle that brought magic and miracle to the house the first time with Abuela .. And in absence of the candle, Mirabel, the human candle fixes it. The reason Mirabel didn't get a gift is because she is the gift. The front door is HER door.. Her door didn't fade away..it merged with the house.

There's a film-making technique called the telescoping of time. 'Waiting for a Miracle' takes place at the speed of thought, so film time is slowed down. At the other end, 'All of You' takes place over a period of months, encompassing the rebuilding of Casita, but film time is speeded up within the length of the songl
Mirabel doesn't have a Gift, but then neither does Abuela Alma. Abuela was Guardian of the magic, and Casita (the embodiment of Abuelo Pedro's sacrifice) chose Mirabel to be her successor.
If you notice, when the rift in the family is growing, Casita pushes everybody out of the house, and expends its last energy protecting Mirabel. Once it's rebuilt, Casita pulls everyone back in, and Mirabel's door is the door to the house.

  • @squeebers
    @squeebers 7 місяців тому +3

I believe that Pedro's spirit is linked to the house via the candle that was in his lantern. He saw the problems the family was having and felt the magic and in turn his link fading. When Mirabel didn't get a door, it is most logical to me that the House AKA Pedro's spirit transferred part of that link that he had with the candle (and probably Abuela had this link too) to Mirabel. Thus, if the house fell (as we saw happen) Mirabel had the power to recreate the link and keep Pedro's spirit there and restore the gifts. She also was chosen to replace Abuela as the candle holder eventually.
So early in the reaction when one of you said that she wasn't chosen, I know that of all the kids in the family to go to a door ceremony, she was the only one chosen for this very important job that only she had the power to do. Mirabel also represents Hope. She brought hope back to the family. Butterflies are the symbol of hope and she has butterflies on her outfit. Also the imagry of butterflies are all throughout this movie.

To be fair, 'everyone' was called to go take a picture, and everyone _but_ her moved over and took care of their own positioning. _Mirabel_ was the one who _chose_ not to be in the picture. She _could have_ been, but _she_ decided not to be. ... For entirely understandable reasons.
"...she's zooming around the house right now..."
You guys don't get musicals. The events of that sequence with Mirabel weren't _actually_ happening.

They finally don't need a candle. They have Mirabel (Miracle). It's just so ironic that Mirabel is waiting for a Miracle cause she's just waiting for herself to realize she is the miracle all this time.
The next problem they'll face is how they gonna keep Mirabel alive forever. Cause if she dies, so does the Miracle. Unless she's gonna pass on the power to another.
Btw, if you noticed. The first act of miracle Mirabel does in the movie was giving Antonio the power to talk to animals. She gave a stuffed animal cause she knew Antonio loves them. Thus when he received his gift, he got the ability to talk to animals.

There's a good theory on why everyone has specific theme to their powers like:
The triplets themes was past, present and future because julieta has the power to heal the past wounds and pepa has the power to change the present weather and bruno has the power to see into the future
Isabela, luisa and mirabel theme was beauty, brawn and brains because isabela produces beautiful plants and luisa has the brawns that she can move buildings and mirabel doesn’t have powers like the rest, but she’s the brain that pieces everything together
Dolores, camilo and antonia theme was hear no evil, see no evil and speak no evil because dolores has super hearing, camilo can see to take on anyone’s appearance, and antonio can speak to animals

there is also a theory that the grandchildrens powers represent the ways people often try to compensate for their traumas: to always be aware of what´s happening (be on the lookout for danger - Dolores), become instantly whatever others want/expect in any given situation (Camillo), be strong and serve everybody (Louisa), always be perfect - no mistake is allowed (Isabella).
The only one this doesn´t fit is little Antonio... but it seams to me that to escape into nature or have strong bonds with animals instead of people (because they wouldn´t hurt you) would make sense too.

Bruno was living in the walls for 10 years (the kids get their gifts at 5, and Mirabel was 15 in the movie.)
The reason that Isa and Mirabel didn't like each other is because they were both jealous of the other, because they each had what the other wanted most. Mirabel's want was obvious, she wanted to be loved by her grandmother, and with Isa being the oldest, she was doted upon by her grandmother constantly. Isabella on the other hand wanted her freedom. Isa saw Mirabel as someone that could do whatever she wanted, whenever she wanted, while Isa had to always do what was best for the family, and what Alma wanted for her (Did you notice that Isa's boyfriend looked a lot like Pedro? Alma was literally trying to force onto Isabella that life that she wasn't able to have because of Pedro's death.)
The reason that we, the viewing audience were shown Isabella as a "bad sister" is because we are viewing the story through Mirabel's eyes, so everything is shown to us how Mirabel sees it.

So what I believe that Mirabelle's gift was is literally to be Abuela's successor, the one that would unify and protect the family and the community when Abuela was no longer able to. However, because of the way that it the castella was set up at the time it could only create an unique room for each unique gift, and the family caretaker role was still filled by Abuela herself, and that's why Mirabelle didn't get her own door. Were it not for the events of the movie proceeding the way they had I believe that when Abuela finally went to join her husband the door would have changed from Abuela to Mirabelle and she would have become the caretaker of the candle (the magic/family.)

This movie was such a sleeper hit! When I watched it when it came out, I knew it had good music, but after watching it, it had such a great, diverse cast of characters and an emotional story to boot! There were a lot of cliches, but also a lot of strong messages of family, expectations, imperfections, and love in it! I think I heard a lot of people like the movie and many of this culture appreciating it and resonating with it (except for Abuella apologizing and realizing her mistake… apparently those that did watch the movie were split with the younger generation agreeing with the message but older generation seeing it simply as fictitious and not reflecting on the message being about their families). And of course I think TikTok blew up We Don’t Talk About Bruno (which is a great song in its own right with how it perfectly integrated multiple people singing) to an insane digital phenomena.

And then we see her be told the real story of how they lost Abuelo Pedro. The grief and anguish on Alma's face. The depression that followed after losing everything but her triplets, the pressure of having an entire village rely on her. A really sad detail is she never took off her mourning shawl until the very end of the movie. You see her dawn it after moving into Casita as a young woman, and you only see her take it off after going into the river with mirabel. Its a physical representation of the grief she carried. It slides off her shoulders like she finally let her grief slip away.

I believe it's 12 weeks when they can definitively hear heartbeats, at least with a doppler, not sure if the time frame is the same for stethoscope or not.
Either way, most people aren't showing (aren't visibly pregnant yet) when they first hear their babies heartbeats. 🤷
