- This is our first time watching Turning Red and this movie DID NOT MISS! It is a beautiful coming of age story about our girl Meilin Lee aka Mei Mei and her battle with her duties to her family but still honoring herself. This was such a wild ride of emotion and we loved every second of it!!

This movie is so cute and bubbly! It truly encapsulates the fun and cringiness of coming of age
for real! we loved everything about it and could relate so much!
I remember the drama about this movie
30 year old cis men were crying about it and about the period pads, saying they couldn't relate with it and that puberty is inappropriate lmao

That’s a lie. I don’t think Ming and Grandma ever had a good relationship. I think Grandma was always a control freak and Ming was just always obedient and that rebellion meant dishonor. Again, Grandma always thought Ming was happy, because she never complained. Poor Ming.
Interesting theory, we could see that being the case!
I'm a 70-year-old black man...and I adore this movie. My daughter was a young teen back in the early 2000s. Great reaction.
I love how this movie teaches about the Chinese culture while still be relatable no matter your race or gender (30-year-old biracial Mexican guy here)
This movie hits me me in the ancestry trauma. it gets me every time. I think people took the period side way too serious and not seen the deeper meaning to this. I appreciate this movie😭

We loved this movie too! Her family's story is sooo relatable unfortunately 😣this one got us in our feels!
I just noticed something about Mei and her friends, the colors they wear shows how opposite they are yet they’re still besties🥰 Mei is a try-hard with a strict household(red) while Myriam is more in tune with the fun she has with chill parents(green), and Abby is all over the place and passionate (purple) while Prya is dead calm almost all the time and always monotone (yellow). All opposite colors 😁 also THE MOM DID SEE THE SIGNS OF THE PANDA COMING SHE JUST THOUGHT THE GUY AT THE DAISY-MART WAS DOING SOMETHING INSTEAD OF MEI FEELING DIFFERENT. Just like my mom’s mindset; “she’s too young she isn’t really ready😭”this is why girls need to learn with a good healthy conversation instead of figuring it out when it ends up happening 😤😠
We didn't notice that about the colors, thanks for pointing it out to us! Mom was just bugging out but glad they figured things out in the end. Poor Daisy Mart guy 😭 yes we agree healthy conversations are definitely needed! note for ourselves once we start having kids 😂
Sometimes when your parents are *that* strict it boarders on intimidation and abuse and its very hard to stand up to that. Especially at this age when your parents and friends are all you truly know about the world

For whatever reason, Fonz in the wig reminded me of Andre 3000. I say he goes the whole way, gets a bandana, get some bell bottoms for some retro fashion and just go with that from now on 😁

A lot of people got WAY to bent outta shape about this film... but yeah I think the twerking scene, while it works because yeah, it's SUPPSOED to make the parent uncomfortable... only works b/c she's in the giant panda form at the time >__
That is what made the stakes so high. Mei was having the same kind of fight with her mother that her mother had had with Grandmother Wu...a fight neither would be able to come back from, a fight both would regret the rest of their lives.
The thing is, that’s literally just how Mei dances and expresses herself, to her it’s completely innocent and to a lot of kids watching, it’s also completely innocent

One thing I noticed is how you two assumed that it was due to something like her period would start the red panda thing, but with how her mom reacted to what she assumed was her daughter's period that it wasn't that that would cause the red panda thing to happen. If getting her period caused it to start then she would've told Mei when she assumed she had it

I just got done watching your guys' Encanto reaction and you guys are on the ball when it comes to picking up on the themes of movies. You guys got like all the major stuff in Encanto, in Turning Red, you guys immediately picked up on how the mom does care, but she's a bit much or how turning red was a euphemism for puberty and all the other things. @@arcanevi4477 Yes, it's not the reconciliation that bugs me - it's the 5 seconds that sticks a little. Than again, I am in my 60's, it's getting hard to remember that innocent kid of under 10 anymore.

@@susanlr5644 He likes the same band as them which is like an automatic friendship at that age. I know i ended up best friends with my former bully (the same petty type) after we found a common interest.
Remember, Tyler did help during the ritual at the end. When you go through a big thing like that with someone, it creates a bond. :)
