  • "My fingers don't want to cooperate with my brain." Sound familiar? If so, this lesson is for YOU! When you start learning the piano, it can be really hard to know WHAT you're supposed to practice, especially if you don't have a teacher to help you.
This lesson will help guide you through 4 exercises you can start practicing RIGHT NOW to help you get comfortable with the keys and help your fingers connect to your brain.
Kaitlyn is here to help! This lesson was filmed about a week after she started learning the piano, so you'll be able to SEE some of the common things that beginners tend to do when they're learning.
    Does it look familiar?
Here are the tips and the timecodes:
    - #1 - Keyboard Geography - 0:50
    - #2 - The Five Finger Scale - 1:42
    - #3 - The Claw - 3:52
    - #4 - Keyboard Familiarity - 5:30
    - #5 (BONUS) - Chords - 6:24
For each of these exercises, TAKE IT SLOW!
It will take time. That's ok. You will get better :)

Would be great! Especially as on UA-cam you find videos titled "Piano progress of 6 months" or similiar and then the player already had an extensive background in music in other instrument so all the theory on chords etc is already there.

It's really cool to see a beginner, it reminds me of me when I first started. I'm learning online, and thanks to you. I know it's not ideal, but I'm 40+, I just want to be able to understand the concept and also to play a few songs there and there. 4 Months later, I can pull things I never imagined. I'll be watching these as I'm still a beginner, and will never be Mozart, but heh, I'm having fun. I like how when you play piano you can't think of any problems in your life or anything else while playing.

I know me too. I started playing piano this year on a cheap 54 key keyboard and I learn tidbits online and just watch synthesia vids and rarely do I use sheet music since I can only read sinmple sheet music. Im currently a 2nd year medtech student in college and even if it is, i can always fall back on a beautiful hobby of mine which is playing the piano and forgetting all my worries while playing them because it's realky a fun and amazing talent to have. Im saving for an 88 key keyboard but it's a long way to go since i only have 40 dollars and i need to get to 200 hahaha

I'm 54 and have been playing the piano for around 8 months and am not a beginner any more. The piano is second hand, and practically fit for the bin but works. I figured if Ray Charles learnt on a broken piano then I'm not going to complain. I taught myself to help my son who is a natural and plays by ear and has created his own music but needs the technical side. Love it as you are never to old. I fancy myself as a wannabe Hazel Scott if you don't know her she will blow your mind. No pianist can touch her - plays two pianos simultaneously at lightening speed.

@Alex 10 Years eh? If you don't mind bragging (lol), how far have your skills come since starting? Did you just learn to play certain songs and adapt your playing around that? Or did you start with Music Theory and learning tones/keys/triads/etc? I'm asking as someone who's just gotten into playing piano again for the millionth time. It's a lot to ask obviously but how far into before you were satisfied with the progress you've made? I'm sort of all over the place on what I'm trying to learn. Studying different genres, different riffs, different licks, sort of everything piano I'm trying to consume. Just curious if I may be hurting myself trying to learn too much at once. As opposed to learning 1 thing at a time until I'm proficient in said thing. Like learning all the different Major scales then moving onto the Minors, etc. Instead of learning 2 scales here 1 scale there. I'm asking a lot and I do apologize, just looking for a bit of clarity with the whole learning process. Any advice/tips or just plain old words are always appreciated, thanks in advanced

"My fingers don't want to cooperate with my brain"...
    Awww, so cute Kaitlyn 😄
I can relate though. I used to play a little but it was years ago. I stopped as life just got in the way.
I've recently started practicing again. I'm currently familiarising myself with the scales. It's been three weeks with just 30 to 40 mins most evenings and I'm now comfortable with C, Cmin, D and Dmin scales.
I think it's going to take a while to learn the rest 🤣
I'm trying to learn to sight read too but it's just not sticking.
My eyes don't want to cooperate with my brain! 🤣
I love this channel btw. You're so relaxed and make learning relaxing and fun 🎹👍😀
    Update 3 June 2020:
Have been reasonably comfortable with all the natural Major Scales for a while now. Just need to work on the Sharps/Flats before continuing working on the Minor Scales.
And just for fun... I've been learning the opening few bars of Gymnopédie No.1 (Erik Satie), Children (Robert Miles), Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeppelin) and the 'Happy Birthday' song.
Just alternating between the first few bars of each song is starting to improve my left hand independence, timing and chord positioning.

I have just found your videos and I never thought that I’d understand the basics quite fast. I normally play guitars and I’ve been trying to understand how to play the piano for years now, I can only play the music I’ve watched by copying the keys but I do not quite know what I’m doing before. But since I’ve found your video about how to read notes, it’s easier for me to understand the basics of playing the piano! Thanks a lot! You’ve re-kindled my desire to play the piano ❤️

remember to be realistic - you'll have to put in a bit of work whichever system you choose for learning piano I have spent months studying teaching yourself piano and discovered an awesome resource at EasyPianoLessons5.blogspot.com

I have watched numerous videos on You Tube to teach my kid on the keyboard. But your videos are amazing. You have tried to make it look so easy and the pace is also great. I will try to teach my kid using your videos. I am from India, not sure where are you located but would love to meet you some day.Hope you and your family are safe during this pandemic

Thank You so much for this wonderful video. I just started 4 weeks ago on piano and I am noting all of these fabulous exercises as I do a few of them.
By far, the most difficult thing for me is lack of keyboard familiarity. Also, any chords involving black keys is an absolute nightmare as I cannot switch chord to chord without stopping and figuring out where fingers go. It’s just awful.
Thank You again for this fabulous video, I’m so happy I’m not the only one struggling with this thing. Good luck to the young lady, I hope she stays w it!

Just subscribed to your videos. I really love them. I play piano but was self taught. I started when i was 10 and I'm telling you it is one of the best moment of my life. Now it's been more than 20 years and i barely play nowadays coz of work. But still dreaming of playing notes. I would love to do both. Thanks for the videos and sharing. A beginner in your video makes it more interesting. Yes it's true. Most things in this world needs more practice. So do the piano. God bless

I so feel her pain... I'm 53 trying to learn piano and it's very difficult...Today my piano teacher said I did excellent and it's the first time I felt like I did really well.. learning where the keys are on the keyboard and learning them on the staffs has made a big improvement for me..I have used an app to help me learn them and that has helped immensely...I actually stopped playing songs and just learned the staff notes to help me so I could read the music instead of being frustrated at every class...

Very instructive. I'm 68 and just inherited a keyboard and have finally achieved a life long dream to learn to play. I wish one of the many videos i have watched would show someone with rather short stubby fingers, seems all have longer fingers which naturally seem to have a wider spacing at the tips. any suggestions for us with shorter fatter fingers?
