Lisa, you are wonderful. Your personality and sparkling teaching ability shine through and encourage me as I stumble along with tangled fingers and .hands that keep mimicking each another! I will persist. Can you recommend how much time a day to spend on scales or exercises v. pieces? Thank you so much.

maybe someone already mentioned this ... on the exercise for independent hand coordination, on your second time through - when you started w the right hand ( 1 - 2 and -- 4 ) and then added the left hand you reversed back to the first way you played it, meaning when you brought the left hand in your right hand switched to 1 - 2 - 3 - 4. Love you joyful approach.

Thank you so much, Lisa, for your helpful, fun-loving videos on learning the piano. As a young boy of 6 I had my first year of piano, then 2 more years of lessons from my church music director at age 13 - 14. At that time I was just beginning to play hymns. Then, nothing for almost 60 years. Now I am reviewing and continuing on. Last year I bought a Yamaha portable, digital piano (P-121) and practice almost everyday with 2 sessions of 30 minutes each. It might seem strange, but I actually enjoy Hanon and scales because I know they are helping develop better technique. Following your suggestion I also do arpeggios, and chords with inversions. Several years ago I saw "Scott, The Piano Guy" on PBS TV and realized that someday I would again be learning to play music, but this time I have a strong inner desire to stay with it and become good. Next year I hope to buy a Kawai MP7SE portable digital piano. It is an amazing instrument which has won many international awards. Many musicians feel that Kawai is surpassing Yamaha in offering high-quality, reliable and affordable keyboards. The features on the MP7SE and the beautiful voices (sounds) simply were not available when I was much younger. Thanks so much, Lisa, for your helpful videos. I like the musical content, but most of all, I ABSOLUTELY ADORE YOUR PLAYFUL, FUN-LOVING ATTITUDE. It helps to take the drudgery out of repetition when doing Hanon, scales and other finger exercises. I send you a big warm hug of support for sharing your musical talent with us. Best wishes from the USA, Jerry.

This is easily one of the best channels for learning piano. I have been practicing moonlight sonata movement 1 ever since I bought the piano a couple of weeks back and the "control" aspect of it is the challenge. Even though I have learnt the entire thing and committed the notes to memory, the degree of softness/loudness that needs to be taken into account makes my playing much more amateur compared to a professional pianist, even though the song itself seems easy at first glance. This video will hopefully help big-time with perfecting that!

A side comment you made about hand independence is probably one of the most helpful ever. “You never really master it”. I’ve been trying for years to separate the two and while now I have no idea why I struggled with swing beats or simple arpeggios etc I now struggle with complex blues rhythms. Maybe hand independence is not a skill in itself, you just have to get one of your hands in autopilot eg a repeating arpeggio pattern, but if you learnt a new pattern you start again. I’ve been frustrated that after all these years I haven’t mastered “the skill” of hand independence . Love your lessons by the way.
