Derek Jacobi could play a telegraph pole and deserve a BAFTA for it. Have loved him since I Claudius in the late ‘70s.
I find it humorous that he played the Archbishop of Canterbury in “The King’s Speech” and the Duke of Windsor here. In real life, those two loathed each other and are probably rolling over in their graves knowing the same actor portrayed both of them.
He did play a wonderful Master in Doctor Who
I still have ‘I, Claudius’ on DVD. It’s fantastic!
Brother Cadfael! ❤🤎❤
@peadar-o "Don't eat the figs".
Did anyone else notice that little smirk on the Duchess of Windsor's face when the Queen saw the Duke of Windsor's last red box?
I noticed.
It’s a television drama, nothing more
That was a nice touch.
But that's a really good nod to history who's really supposed to be king? If Wallis didn't happen or word war II elizabeth or her father may have not gotten the thrown till the 1970s
Interestingly, Queen Elizabeth II would always have been Queen, as her uncle was childless
Her Majesty. Kind, caring, loving and forgiving she was. May she rest in peace.
A person has lived an extraordinary life if the closest thing they get to an act of selfishness is their own death.
If you think she was a good person with the violence and death she was responsible for and profited from, I shudder to think who you think is a bad person.
@@mlgmoore How was she directly responsible for anyones death? She has very little power over the government but please do tell us...
@@mlgmoore Last time I check she’s a constitutional monarch. She virtually has no say in the government’s decisions, who btw are
elected by the citizens of the UK.
Yeah I find her more a privileged nobody than a violent person.
Actually the visit was fully planned some weeks in advance. They did meet in private. Both Philip and Charles accompanied the Queen. Wallis said the goodbyes and curtsied to the Queen for almost the first time.
This episode and the episode when Princess Margaret dies completely guts me every time. At the very end of the episode when the Duchess of Windsor realizes that the Duke has passed on after the black cat bolts out of the room. Her reaction just cuts me to the core.
It’s a black pug, not a black cat.
The end of the Margaret episode is gut wrenching. You know it’s coming, but when it goes from young Elizabeth to old Margaret, that was so unexpected and so emotional.
@@jasonkoch3182 I heard the royal household organised a 49 Gin salute when she died.
I wouldn't waste any tears over the Duke. He was the worst traitor this country has ever known. He urged Hitler to increase the bombing of British civilians during the Second World War. No matter how The Crown depicted his death, it was good riddance to bad rubbish when he died.
There's some interesting connections to "The King's Speech", besides the subject matter: Derek Jacobi played the Archbishop of Canterbury in that film (in which he speaks with the future Duke of Windsor). Also Claire Bloom, who played Queen Mary in that film previously worked with Geraldine Chaplin's father (you know who) in "Limelight".
The queen actually rode to the Windsors in de Gaulle’s Citroen SM Presidentielle, but only two of them were ever made
would've been a Citroen DS as the SM was a 2-door coupe. de Gaulle was well-known for riding around in DSs, especially after the assassination attempt
Thank you for the comment!
@@alexanderkingtickle well it was a special edition. There’s a video on youtube of one of them. ‘Citroen SM Presidentielle’
Magnificently done…one of the best scenes
Nice to see Geraldine Chaplin
She was magnificent. She affirmed our finer instincts: Patriotism, duty, consensus and, yes, diversity. Queen Elizabeth II. To paraphrase an elegy to a fallen Abraham Lincoln: “Now she belongs to the ages.”
I've loved Olivia Coleman in everything I've seen her in from being a Numberwang contestant to her extraordinary performance as Queen Anne, but I just can't take to her portrayal of the late Queen. She seems on the verge of tears all the time and doesn't have any of the energy of Elizabeth II.
I think it awesome that Olivia went from a job she loved doing, taking pride in, that Cleaning Houses was for her a great job, then she found fame but never forgot what she really enjoyed. That's being humble.
Hope Kate is safe and sound.😥
Queen Elizabeth II was one of the great people and public servants of all of history. She will be missed.
i have a feeling that plaque that says the king was not placed there by accident,
Nope, and it was probably there 24/7 - not just for Elizabeth's arrival.
To his (small) credit, the dying Windsor did insist on getting up and dressed when he heard she was coming, and I think he actually managed to stand in her presence, at least briefly.
It was his red ministerial papers box, in which the monarch receives goverment papers for viewing, comment, approval and signature for royal assent. All of which flies in the face of the arguemnt that the UK monarch is apolitical. They know exactly what goverment policy is and if it does not suit the crown can "suggest" ammendements, of which the toading Prime Minister in power at the time always takes on board. The UK working-time directive and Diversity act of 2010 are two minor expamles of the monarchy reading Goverment papers and "advising" it did not suit them. Neither act applies to the workers in the many royal households. No limit to working hours and no requirement to have a diverse workforce. Unlike the rest of the great unwashed of the UK who have to adhear to these laws because, as "subjects" not citizen of the UK, we are unworthy. There have been many other occasions where the monarchy has meddled in UK political affairs to suit themselves.
@@radiogreenduck So that was one of the famous red boxes? Thanks. I didn't know that they were quite so ... showy.
@@radiogreenduck Give it a break.
@@AdaKizi248 It was the red box the old bastard stole from the institution of the Crown when he abandoned it.
❤
QE2 spoke perfect French and always did whenever speaking to the French. Shame on show for not showing this
I don't remember this scene, what episode is this?
Season 3, Episode 8.
Her visit with the Duke of Windsor was planned in advance of her speech. Watch the scene in the plane where she is told the duke's health is declining, and she should visit him while she is in France.
I wish the show had better dialect coaches. E2R just did not speak like that.
he had a life without a purpose
or a dolphin
In the end I don't think I was above so the king who gave up the phone I think you only saw her uncle David sitting there dying. I think she is more of a woman than he deserved. He didn't deserve for forgetting. But should forgive him anyway. That shores the remarkable woman she was
Its a shame they went more for the names of actor's instead of getting ones that would fit the roles. Olivia Coleman is an amazing actress but was horrible in this part along with most of them.
He was a weak man
And a nazi sympathiser
Yep just like Harry.
Nothing like Harry@@kerriethompson2073
I was a throughly nasty piece of work who cared little for anyone but himself. He spent £10,000 in 1930s money of public money on gifts to that Simpson womam (who also cared for no one but herself). In 1946 they hung William Joyce as a traitor for making a few broadcasts to the UK that people laughed at anyway. Edward the 8th put in writing to Hilter that he should carry on bombing the UK to bring it to its knees. He openly conspired against his homeland and threw his lot in with the Nazi's, with, it is generally accepted, that had Germany invaded the UK the Nazi's would have installled him as monarch. When the Marburg papers came to light they should have treating him the same way as Joyce. The guy was a traitor.
@@CMOT101 Harry is controlled by his wife.
One stupid movie more
Movie,chill
Wonder if when Harry lays dying, and Meghan is hanging around like an “old bat”, it will be William or George that comes to say goodbye as Monarch.
You people are obsessed with Harry. He is not the heir to the throne. He never was a king who abdicated like the Duke of Windsor. By the time George has children. Harry will be a fringe member of the royal family. No one will even care about him.
If the monarchy in Britain still excists at this point.
Could be the other way.🙂
Kate and Charles will probably die first
He lives
In America! Cut the crap!
More inaccurate rubbish from the Crown
The late Queen did go to see the Duke and he insisted on being suitably attired for the meeting. His I.V, was hidden behind a curtain. Of course the Queen was informed of all this.
@@bostonblackie9503 Indeed he did... There was some debate over if she would or not and when told she was on the way, insisted on dressing in his finest because he would be speaking to his monarch
It’s actually true
This never happened. The Duke of Windsor was an outcast.
Actually The Queen, Prince Philip and the Prince of Wales went to visit the Duke of Windsor before he died.
Yes, it did fool even in America. We know that she did visit him
absolutely untrue. The queen and Charles did go to see him.
He was a Traitor
