It’s a 40s hit with some 30s swing done in a 50s style by an 80s guy who’s kept rocking’ into the 90s, 00s, 10s, 20s, and Lord willing, on into the next 50s!!

A hit from 1940 by the Glenn Miller Orchestra, popularized in the UK by him conducting the US Army Air Force Band for live shows and radio during WW2. Just FYI, Harri. Another fine reaction. 👍🏻

Probably the best cover of this Glenn Miller classic. In the US the first 3 numbers after the area code (city code) of phone numbers indicated the neighborhood. Back in the day if you asked someone for their number, they would actually say the name of the neighborhood + the last 5 digits. The first 2 letter of the neighborhood name corresponded to the numbers on the phone dial. If you watch old I Love Lucy shows you hear it a lot. Her number was Murray-hill 5-9975. Murray Hill is a neighborhood in Manhattan. The phone number would have been 687-9975. Old phone books would have printed it MU7-9975.

My back in the day family phone was Sunset 56744. A couple miles away, the numbers began with Cedar.

"In the Mood" by the Glenn Miller Orchestra is what you're thinking of ..
(My grandfather was a big band trumpet player in the 30s/40s-- played with Dorsey Brothers, Benny Goodman, Bunny Berrigan, Harry James. Etc)

I really like all the stuff Brian Setzer has done. First with "The Stray Cats" in the old rockabilly style & then with the big band style with his orchestra. Nice that he brought back some nostalgia for the older music. This song "Pennsylvania 6-5000" was made famous in the 1940's by Glenn Miller & His Orchestra. They had a lot of great songs you may want to check out.

PE-65000 was, and believe still is, the official telephone number of the "Cafe Rouge" in New York City's legendary "Pennsylvania Hotel", where Glenn Miller's Orchestra played regularly. The scene in the fabulous 1954 biopic, "The Glenn Miller Story", starring Jimmy Stewart and June Alyson, where the hit tune is first introduced is funny, poignant, and spectacular... 😀😄 👍💋

I was holding my breath on this one, Harri. Not sure you'd like it. Not to worry, though. Your reaction was exactly as hoped and much like my own. This is 40's big-band swing crossed with Rock ;n Roll . . . and, amazingly, it works. In fact, it positively sizzles!!

The Hotel Pennsylvania in NYC, across the street from Penn Station (named for the Pennsylvania Railroad), still uses the number 212-736-5000 (PE6-5000). They used to have a ballroom where the Glenn Miller Orchestra (among others) would play. The song is about calling them, making a reservation, and coming down to jitterbug with the band! You should listen to some of their other songs, like In The Mood, Tuxedo Junction, I've Got a Girl in Kalamazoo, String of Pearls.

I'm not of that era but loved the big band music of the 30's and 40's and Dixieland prior to that. Used to go to a place called "The Speakeasy" for Dixieland. Had a much older cousin who played sax in big bands during WW2. People who fail to listen to music from any era or genre are depriving themselves of a lot of enjoyment. Brian is very talented and charismatic.

If you haven't checked out The Stray Cats, you should listen to Brian Setzer with that group. Stray Cat Strut is always fun to listen to. After reading other people's comments, I knew why this song was so familiar. My Dad played Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band albums all the time when we were growing up. I have an enormous appreciation for big band music because of this. Also have the five album set since my Dad passed. They're oldies, but goodies!

Another great cover by Brian, originally done by Glenn Miller (1944) written by Jerry Gray(7/3/1915-8/10/1976) this is a phone number of the Pennsylvania Hotel in N.Y.C before area codes. Also covered by the Andrews Sisters. It's 65 years later since Miller did it. Brian Setzer is a very talented musician who likes to reinventing himself.

Sorry Harri you're getting your decades mixed up Big Band Swing started in the late 30's and was big in the 40's. This definitely definitely got Me in "The Mood" for some Glenn Miller who invented that type of music 🎶 and We lost too early. Mum was a Teenager of the 40's who was into Big Band Swing, The Crooners and an Elvis Fan. Dad was an Old Fashioned Rock And Roll Is A Message From The Devil Type. As a Little Girl I grew up hearing Celtic Folk Songs, Classical, Old Country And Western alongside 50's Music. When I was 13 Mum and I left My Abusive Father, moving from Brisbane to The Atherton Tablelands, Far North Queensland. My Big Sister moved in with Us, She started teaching Me about Older Artists and I taught Her about 90's Music. Mum became a fan of ABBA, The Beatles, The Bee Gees and The Everly Brothers. As a result I just plain Love ❤ Music from Classical to Heavy Metal. Bon Jovi's My All Time Favourite. Mum didn't understand what I saw in Heavy Metal, She could be excused for that. But She didn't stop Me from listening to it, I just couldn't turn it up. I either had to wait until She left home or wear headphones 🎧.
