  • We reposted this video because the date was incorrect. This is a 1941 Gibson L-5 that was once owned by the legendary Hank Garland.

Brian Setzer visited the shop and was happy to oblige us with a quick video of him playing this incredibly cool 1941 L-5.

Many years ago I was a barman in a nightclub which had a band called 'The Stray Cats' playing one night. All that was on stage was a snare drum, a double bass and a small amp with a 2×12 cabinet. They ripped the shit out of the place! I'll never forget it. Brilliant.

Brian is that rare perfect storm of talents and abilities. Singing, writing, musicianship, showmanship, leadership, personality, business acumen, a grasp of history and tradition, discipline and fun, and an endurance for hard work and long hours that has carried him through decades in a tough business. In the old days, guys like that became big band leaders. So that's what he did.
Elfman cuts a similar figure in show biz, but he decided to maybe go easier on himself, get off the stage and score films instead.
Lastly, is it just me or does he look more and more like McCartney?

I saw Brian Setzer (post Stray Cats, pre-Brian Setzer Orchestra) open for George Thorogood. It should have been the other way around. Fast forward to 1991, and due to work, I find myself at the NAMM show standing not more than 6 feet away from him much like this. He finishes, looks at me, and I say "Right on!". Sweet Lorraine was written in 1928 and is considered a Jazz standard. Covered by tons of people including Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Marvin Gaye, Sammy Davis Jr., Bing Crosby etc.
Without Blues, Jazz doesn't exist. They're more tightly linked than some Jazz-types want to admit. Blues guys couldn't care less. You can Jazz up a Blues or Blues up a Jazz. This is the latter. An example of Jazzing up a Blues would be something like Stormy Monday or Need Your Love So Bad.

EC also said of JJ " "He was a fantastic musician. And he was my hero" he was coverd by lynard skynard,Jerry Garcia,Kansas, Johnny Cash, Bobby Bare, John Mayer, Johnny Hiland, poco, Beck,George Thorogood and The Destroyers,Santana, willie nelson. Mark Knopfler said " he was one of biggest influences with the tulsa sound and it can be heard all through out the dire straits album brothers in arms. even Niel Young covered his music and had this to say of JJ "Of all the players I ever heard, it's gotta be [Jimi] Hendrix and J. I love that pre rock and roll era guitar. And the way Brian plays it, just proves that it was an underrated era in guitar. I love that pick to thumbs switch that he's pulling off for this picking hand. that's a very cool technique. You can definitely hear in the Dynamics. Brian is one of my all-time favorite guitar players. right up there with Chet Atkins. very cool!

@@glenncalzada1707 that was my realization when I used to get the Guitar Center catalogs growing up. I played bass guitar in middle school and always wanted a Rickenbacker 4001 so I could look like Geddy Lee or Cliff Burton. Whenever I got to the bass section and saw it listed with "call for price" I knew it was way out of my price range. It probably still is.

I had the pleasure of operating one of the stage lights for fading and different colours e.t.c at his stray cat gig in oberhausen Germany in 1990. I have never seen a more brilliant live guitarist than Brian setzer. His guitar tech at the time was a real nice guy and gave me some of his personalised picks which I played to death and wore out. Great memories of a world class entertainer, showman and mind blowing skill on a guitar

Taken out of context. Sounds like semantics but use a small g for god. When raving fans used to scream Elvis is the King. He replied, "There's only one true King and that's Jesus Christ"

    • @pumasgoya

Yup, God with a capital G means only one. With a small g it refers to non existant beings.
