Dude, it’s one thing to be inexperienced as a rider and another just to be completely foolish. Luckily it was Fountainhead and there is always cell service, but if you were other places you can really get yourself in trouble being as unprepared as you are and ignoring the trail difficulty markings. Ironically, that crank may have saved you from being seriously hurt, bc if you had attempted some of those black drops and botched them you could have been seriously injured. That emt road is there bc every year they have to pull people out who get seriously f’ed up on the black section. This is not an activity to joke around about, people break their necks and become paralyzed, smash their heads and becomes vegetables, and the lucky ones maybe just can never ride or walk right or use an arm again. So please either do this right or stop now and stick to paved paths and the C & O. If you want to so it right:
      Get Trailforks- pay for it.
Have a backup trail app- I like Gaia
Carry a small battery and cord to charge your cell phone if it dies-
      Map apps are battery vamps.
If you are going to a place without cell service, make sure to go to the map apps and look around the area you are going to be in. This will download the quadrants of the map where you will be onto your phone’s harddrive- even though you still have GPS without cell service, to get the maps for the GPS to overlay your position onto you need cell service. Your phone, for storage limit purposes, only stores the last like dozens of quadrants you looked at on your hard drive, the rest of the time it is pulling it from the web. When you have service this is no problem and you don’t even notice it, but if you are in an area without service as soon as you go to a new area, it won’t be able to pull the map quadrants for that area and all you’ll see is your blue GPS location dot on a blank screen.
And make sure to use these BEFORE you go- get an idea of the layout where you are riding, distance, bailout points, shortcuts, emergency locations etc. and watch some vids on the trails before you go- just remember the GoPro effect always makes things look easier.
ALWAYS MAKE SURE SOMEONE KNOWS WHERE YOU ARE AND WHEN TO WORRY IF THEY HAVE NOT HEARD FROM YOU.
Bring adequate water. And in the DMV that needs to include some kind of electrolyte drink. I use Nuun tablets in water bottle and carry a camel back with water- if you sweat too much and only replace with water your electrolytes can get out of balance causing dizziness, nausea and can lead to death- I had to carry an older woman 5 miles down a mountain out west when we were hiking one time bc of this. If she were on her own she could not have made it out and may have died.
Always carry at least a bike specific multitool. I like to carry a tube- hike a bike out is not fun- I just did it last month bc I forgot my tube in my truck. Also easy to carry a patch, a hand pump and some CO2 cartridges with the attachment. Think about some basic first aid stuff- blood clotter, bandages, wound cleanser, bandaids, bandages and tape. There is a vid of a guy who crashed, broke his handlebar and it cut his leg hitting his femoral artery. I’ve had to bandage up some bad gashes on the trail myself. The more remote you will be, the more you should carry- like
Maybe even add a chain and master link if you are really gonna be in the boonies. But always carry the basics.
Know your wildlife you may encounter and how to handle it.
Maybe get some knee pads if you want to get sendy.
Get the right equipment if you want to get sendy. What do I mean? Those pedals! Get some real mtb pedals- Deity Deftraps are $55 and awesome. You need grip. One way to get hurt is to slip a pedal. And know the limits of your bike- or at least how it may make certain things more difficult. If it has a steeper head tube angle it will make drops and jumps and steeps more difficult and risky and require you to have better form, which as a noob you won’t have, leading to greater likelihood of a crash.
Know your limits and take trail difficulty markings seriously. What you called a drop in your vid is not a drop, it’s a chute at best- a steep section of trail that you roll down. A drop is feature that you roll off of flat and drop to a landing- going off a curb is the most basic form. There are two wooden ones on the blue section. Dont do those yet. There is a technique to drops to keep your front wheel up that you have to learn. And when riding trails and you can’t do features in the easier color trails, dont move on and ride the harder. Also, many trails have what is called a gatekeeper at the beginning. It is some feature that if you cannot do, you should not do the trail. That is what the beginning of the black section is. When you were struggling that much on it you should have turned around.
And finally- get some lessons. It will be the best money you can spend after the pedals.
Have fun out there but use your head and be safe. Start small and progress intelligently so that the risks you take are manageable. And I’ll see you on the trails. 🤙

Great advice! Definitely have a few things to work on to say the least. Once I get them sorted, let’s ride sometime.

The catch with those roots and rock gardens is that you need speed to get over them (and a good line). Also, always carry a multi tool. Sometimes the issue with stripped threads is from over tightening. Best to use a torque wrench.

Great video and a learning experience for you that you will laugh at repeatedly I am sure. If you ever plan a trip up to Pa, can show you some great trails here.

Keep at the biking bro, it only gets more righteous. Switch your peddles out to metal flats. Keep your tools on you in a backpack. Like a multi tool, extra tube or spare tubeless, handpump. 😂 I've been in that position... 😅 GREAT VID, nice production. Looks and sounds great.

Sheeeesh that’s the second comment to get some metal pedals. Maybe that’ll have to be the first upgrade 👀. Appreciate the complements on the production, hopefully only up from here!

Agree on carrying tools etc. but I recommend a good pair of composite pedals like e*thirteen or OneUp, all I run on all 4 of my bikes!

the bolt was stripped because you were riding on a loose crank and that can flatten threads or just shear them clean off. good learning lesson though

You gotta be careful out there at fountainhead, I use to race there but now I’m a fisherman. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve been out on my boat and seen someone evacuated from those trails happens atleast once a month
