On my way home, I drive past a high school. On days I’ve driven by while the school was letting out, if their clothes had words and/or pictures on them, most of these kids wore shirts commemorating rock bands and movie franchises from the 70s through the 90s. It was shocking!
music is basically stagnant too
Shocking?!!? You must be out of the loop. I have two teenage kids. They almost exclusively love 80s and 90s music and movies. They actually make fun of how modern stuff is awful and they hate it. Go to a mall with a Hot Topic store. Tell me what you see! It's almost all 80s and 90s stuff. Kids today have NOTHING. They are resorting to our old culture. What a shame.
@@bassage13 Resorting to our old culture? So there are some decent parents out there 😏
I’m more shocked they weren’t wearing school uniforms cause that’s the norm in a lot of places
It's because we have a fractured culture in the country. Hollywood is almost entirely comprised of new wave progressives with radical ideas. Half of the country is diometrically opposed to those ideas. The remaining 30% don't really agree with the ideas but think Republicans are nazis so they will oppose anything traditional but don't really love anything progressive. As a result, the new ideas we get are toxic garbage, and the only successful movies we see are older directors making sequels and reboots of things they grew up with in the 80s and 90s.
Probably the closest are John Wick, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon and Despicable Me/Minions.
None of those are even close to great. Not bad, they're decent. But nowhere near great. Can't even touch the 80s greats.
John Wick was great, and it's sequels are decent (but the formula is tired; Unless they change it up, they shouldn't just keep flogging it into the dirt)
And the FIRST Despicable Me was good. But the sequels, and worse, the Minions spin-off, is utter garbage.
And Kung Fu Panda, and HTTYD were mediocre from the start
@@baconsarny-geddon8298People say KFP 2 was a classic
Quiet Place movies also.
Avengers movie?
Last generation film makers where inspired by the idea of telling stories, new filmmakers are inspired by the idea of making movies. Something was lost along the way.
The difference is in the 80's we used to have stars and stars could sell some crazy ideas like Beetlejuice or Ghostbusters while today it's the brand that sells tickets. Also the youth have nothing to latch on to in Hollywood. In the 80's, there were John Hughes movies made by talented people while today the youth gets 13 Reasons Why, the earth is dying, the country is dying, family is evil. That's why anime and UA-cam/Tik Tok is their escapism from being told by the current hacks in Hollywood that their lives are miserable in a mass self projection.
It’s the same for fashion and music too
1984 was a standout year. Maybe the best of the 80’s.
In economics we know this as a result of oligopoly and protectionism. The oligopoly has achieved the point in their power where they concentrate on creating barriers of entry = blocking new entrants from threatening their position, and they no longer focus on creating value to customers. They control the market and thus the products which are provided to the customers and the channels through which they receive products (and the media). They do not concentrate on creating good products as that's less important now.
No matter what level of product they produce it will sell a certain amount and no other players will be able to threaten them anyway, as they control the production in the industry (all main studios, most of the staff), the financing(!), the distribution, the media. It's like Soviet bakeries: they're the only one in your area and if there's worse product you buy it anyway, if the shelves are empty the lines just grow longer and people just eat a bit less bread because the monopoly/oligopoly controls the supply side of the market.
They've bought up the main franchises and studios, they even affect the whole industry so that everyone knows they must work for or at the very least never go against the big oligopoly if they want to have a career.
As RMB says perfectly, corporatism, it’s the death of art.
As you pointed out; they take over and then block anyone who could threaten them, it’s why modern Hollywood writers have such a snobby and self aggrandising attitude towards their audience despite having no talent, becuase the powers that be made it that way, so they can’t be threatened by someone objectively better than them.
@@Scruffynerfherder10 Right: it's not about competition (based on merit or customer wishes), it's about monopoly/state power gained through other, nefarious means. Tyranny.
It's a result of our governing bodies, organization structures still being too primitive: they don't have answers to so many negative phenomena, human impulses and bad actors. Broken organizations create avenues for nefarious actors and cause feedback loops which snowball into huge destructive forces.

We're due for a renaissance after all this hyper PC stuff gets ground out of these huge corporations by all the inevitable class action lawsuits, discriminatory hiring suits, SEC violations (everything they are doing is illegal because contrary to leftwing extremist authoritarian collectivists this ain't soviet Russia lol), government intervention, and shrinkage.
They can't sustain what they're doing. They've been failing for almost a decade now and all the things we warned them about back when gamergate/comicsgate etc. started has long since come to fruition and now it's starting to really hurt them.
We are officially in the decline across the board now. The film, tv, comics, video games and news and entertainment industries are all in utter despair. There are no decent new movie stars or IPs everyone mostly likes because of what they've done and all the once great studios and corporations are worldwide laughingstocks. Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm, Ubisoft, EA, etc. Everyone is pissed and everything is shrinking as a result (starting with DEI departments and redundant HR personnel which is a HUGE step in the right direction).
From 2016 onwards the film industry was still on an upswing but 2020 onwards accelerated its cycle and now it's coming to parity with other industries. By 2014-2016 comics were almost dead (and fully so by 2020) as all this nonsense started there first. There haven't been barely any decent video games for a LOOONG time now but they only staved it off by leaning into predatory monetization and the addictive nature of certain psychological aspects of the habit (the BEUC is on that though and others are soon to follow suit).
They are all in different stages of the cycle and their respective cycles are different in myriad ways but the cycle does exist and the change is inevitable. It's natural selection.
Adapt, overcome, and grow or remain stagnant, wither and die. They are the only two options (besides some mythical "Great Reset" lol but we all know this is just cultural marxist accelerationism that will end up in societal collapse/revolution which is just the same inevitablility brought about in a different way by different forces by the same failed globalist economists [
There’s a reason that UA-cam is one of the most watched platforms, and it’s not just because of middle aged men and women with action figures as a backdrop. Because of Hollywood’s risk aversion and obsession with sequels and remakes, creative voices express themselves here. All the musicians, filmmakers, documentarians and comedians are here. And they all have an intimate connection with their audience that they would never have if they worked for a major studio or record label.
Best franchise of the 2010's was John Wick. Started a huge trend in action movies. Sad thats the only one i can think of tho
The early fast and furious movies were my jam as a 90s car enthusiast
Ghostbusters is my favourite movie of all time. That said, the franchise needs to die for good.
Anime is new and original? Tell that to the 20 isekai coming out every season.
I've said for several years that the only thing Hollywood has to offer these days are sequels, prequels, spinoffs, remakes, and reboots
Also in 1984 sequels were a new thing too.
Really? What about all the old James Bond and Godzilla movies?
@@AlphaProto not really sequels to be honest, especially the Bond films. Godfather was the first film to have a Part 2. The exorcist sequel 'The Heretic' was the first to use the number two alone, but it was in Roman numerals which feels in keeping to the tone and theme of the story. The Omen 2, Jaws 2 and Rocky 2 were the first films to simply stick a number 2 after the original movie's title and they were still very contemporary films in 1984. That's what I consider a sequel and I think most would agree. Calling Bond films sequels in my opinion is like saying every episode of The Saint or Man From Uncle or The X Files after the pilot is a sequel. Bond is more like big long running show with a bigger running time than a set of sequels. That's my opinion anyway. (As an addition I've just remembered Rocky also uses Roman numerals in it's numbering, perhaps that's to do with it's gladiatorial theme tune)
Sequels are as old as the movies themselves. Lest we forget The Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula’s Daughter, Return Of The Thin Man and the entire Henry Aldrich and East Side Kids film series.
Stranger Things was big, but then again, it was an homage to 80s culture.
Alan reading off that banger list of movies that came out in '84 got a hell yeah outta me. Movies are hot garbage for the most part these days.
Wow, didn't realize the number of great films that came out in '84. My favorite year is '94.
Times have changed. Movies arent as important to modern generations as they were to our generation. To young people movies are the same as tiktok, UA-cam and everything else you can see on a screen. I would say Tiktok is way more appealing to young audiences than movies. Movies will go away. Nothing is forever.
Yeah only been about 100 years. i'm sure the art form is about to die off completely like music did in the classical age and art did after the renaissance...oh wait...
@@AnonymousNoNayme YES. Not tomorrow. Not in 5 years. Not in 10 years. It will happen slowly. Its already in motion for many years if you watch closely. You can already tell that UA-cam-Stars are much bigger than movie-stars these days. Platforms like UA-cam and Tiktok have a way bigger audience than movies ever had. Todays 20-year-olds dont care for movies. They have their own stuff. Its always about "How want the people spending their time." And movies arent that appealing to more and more people. I think there will be movies as long as we are living on this Planet, but they will be no longer this big moneymakers. And for the people that are currently still making money with movies its not important. They will find other ways to make money. They will be fine. Everything is changing all the time. And at some point movies the way we know them for over 100 years will be something (almost) nobody will talk about anymore.
Utter waffle
@@constantlyenthused336 I dont think so. I dont have magic powers. I cant see the future, but I am pretty sure about that.
Filmmakers will never just disappear, nor an audience who loves visual storytelling. Hollywood as we know it may go away, which would be a blessing.
I love this discussion!!
Speaking of which, have you guys seen the Mickey 17 trailer? I believe it is refreshing from all these sequels, reboots and whatnot. It looks super interesting and fun!
The purpose of these sequels was to make the older audiences as well as new ones feel connected to the past, but we don't seem to have enough competent writers, directors, & producers to this right, let alone with fresh 💡. It's not just anime, but k-dramas, Chinese & Indian content, as well as some from Europe.
The purpose was to make money
I write under Aethon Books and a lot of good if not great stories come from my fellow indie authors. But since these are not published through traditional publishing houses, we won’t likely see any of them rise very high in popularity beyond their target audiences and thus not see adaptations to “TV” series or “film”.
No remedy (so far) for Hollywood's chronic case of Sequel-itis
Why do we need another franchise? Just give me good movies.
A new franchise will just be a source for unimaginative filmmaking in the years to come.
What comes to mind is John Wick and A Quiet Place. While franchises have their place, Im glad that Nolan and Peele are doing one off projects. Reboots and remakes will continue. Sadly, the higher powers just see dollar signs and not even attempt to piece together a good story. The next gold rush is video game movies and turning those into franchises.
Holy hell is A Quiet Place a dumpster fire of a movie (franchise??? really???)! I've never seen a more ridiculous premise and plot! Who watches that junk?
It's called Puella Magi Madoka Magica. A shame that nobody knows about it, though...
I think the only one that still tries today is the horror genre like Terrifier and X were really good And if they’re lucky, they get another big horror icon like Freddy and Jason in the 80s and saw in the 2000s
My Old Ass seems to be a modern movie.
Great watch
John Wick is close. For the 2010s, perhaps The Hunger Games qualifies. The Expanse for nerds. Yes, there's not much original media currently.
Just anime? How about independent animation?
So Hollywood’s afraid to risk making something new, but have absolutely no problem shelling out hundreds of millions on multiple girl boss, DEI dog shit remakes, bait n’ switches and endless soulless sequels that completely shit the bed CONSTANTLY. Make it make sense.
the suits with the money are too afraid of making something new because new is more risky, but the """"creatives"""" are compromised and only want to produce propaganda.
It's very simple, two problems exist at the same time.
Easy, hollywood is full of untalented people who can’t come up with anything original but they sure as hell can push that DEI.
People under 35 can't pay attention to something for more than a few minutes. Then comes boredom and out comes the phone.
Thats a lie. People in there 40s are just as addicted to there phone. You not special. Hell your in the comments.
Well I am 22 and I can do it fine
Quite often Franchises contain a good first movie then goes on inferior sequels . The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Toy Story 2 and 3 being exceptions. I like Michael Bay's first Transformers movie for example but cannot stand the four sequels he did after.
afaik, lord of the rings trilogy was filmed together or very close so it's more of a big honking single movie than one movie with 2 sequels
LOTR is an IP. That doesn't count.
I would say the monsterverse is actually the greatest ongoing franchise. Star wars and superheroes have been shit for years now. Godzilla and Kong keep going strong.
it's not from this generation though, godzilla and kong have existed since black and white movies
John Wick???
Gnomercy was great but nobody watched it.
Black Panther? Or was that completely dependent on Chadwick Boseman?
It was Pirates of the Caribbean
Yea, and the MCU stuff I guess.
@@sooperd00p The MCU is not an original franchise like Star Wars in the 70s and 80s or Indiana Jones.
The MCU is from 2008.
Acting like there aren't anime remakes and reboots.
Transformers, didnt those make money and kids liked them?
It's Avatar, Duh!
Hunger games?
Don't forget the dreaded prequel! I hate prequels...
Furiosa was one and it looked like a video game cutscene lol
John Wick. Marvel. These are a few. But, yeah, most are derivative of 80s properties at this point. As a Gen Xer, I really want Hollywood to create new stuff and not drive my beloved childhood franchises into powder.
But even Marvel stuff is based on comics.
@@TheSt1092 Yeah, who thinks Stan Lee (born in 1922) is "of this current generation"?
Marvel is an (inferior) derivative of ancient comics, and even then the last good one is Endgame, it's been 5+ years
Harry potter
Katniss What's her face franchise
marvel
I think they are talking about ORIGINAL concepts; as they said Terminator and Beverly Hills Cop; brand new concepts. Hunger games and Harry Potter are adaptations.
@@Scruffynerfherder10 Isn't all that the previous generation's stuff anyway? The audience of Harry Potter and Hunger Games are like 35 now, aren't they? The creators of those 'franchises' were already pretty old when they were made and very old now, they're not even close to being 'this generation'.
And try to tell me Stan Lee is of this generation...
@@pistonburner6448exactly right. There’s nothing from western media that is “new” for the current generation of kids.
@@Scruffynerfherder10 Your reply to me is censored here too. (It's possible that I'm being censored and that's why...)
it's a book series from the 90s and early 2000s
also a book series but from the 2010s
comic books from the dawn of civilization, 1930 onwards
With VERY rare exceptions, franchises are a recipe for garbage.
Franchises were at their best in the 80s, when only the most popular movies got a sequel, and we didn't have these endless, speawling franchises like MCU, or Star Wars or the 57 Walking Dead spin-offs, perpetually farting out the lazyest content, for the dumbest, most indiscriminate fans.
Franchises (and viewr habits) have turned movies into TV- Just a constant stream of medioctity, one medicore thing blurring into the next.
What's the franchise for millennials? LOTR is an IP, so that doesn't count.
This is what happens when you get rid off talent and hire by DEI
The last "new" franchise that was any good was the Saw movies.
Nope
@@sooperd00p troll
It doesn't exist really.
These people are so out of touch. 😂
