Greg in the bathroom? Easy, biscuit...............LMAO!!!!!!!!!!! Greg's voice is very, very smooth and plaintive. Steve? He's from Heaven as far as I know
Great song. Definitely do "Wheel In The Sky," "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'," "Any Way You Want It," "Stone In Love," "Chain Reaction" and "Ask The Lonely."

Sweet And Simple 🔥 I hope you check these out..many hidden Diamonds!
Guitars players know. Schon is not underrated. Yes, he is often not mentioned among the best or greatest of all time, be he is undoubtedly a phenomenal player, not to be slept on. Please do Stone in Love.
@@patriot4854 if so, not sure how or why anybody would ever think that within the context of Journey. They're all good, but Perry is the only who could be considered on the same level or higher. Rolie/Cain and Steve Smith close. Perry and Schon are the clear standouts, but the trio with either keyboardist were the key song writing dynamic.
I met Gregg when we were both guests at a wedding. His voice is good but he's no Steve Perry. I agree with you, Ryan. He could sing the phone book and I'd love it. Steve Perry is not from this planet. Maybe the 2nd half of the double take will be Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'. 🤞
There is a live version of this that is awesome, with Steve Perry vocally matching the guitar solo at the end. They're one of the few bands that I almost always prefer their live versions better than the studio ones.
Another great song by Journey! "Where Were You", the live version is a great song! The drums at the beginning of the song is crazy! Also listen to "When You Love a Woman" , such a beautiful song.
1979…This was the album I discovered Journey…a die-hard fan ever since. Owning everything they ever recorded. This Album will remain one of their best! The legendary singer from Santana - Gregg Rollie and guitarist Neal Schoen (who was a teenager when he played with Santana) founded Journey. Rock fame Manager Doc McGee insisted they hire a vocalist. Enters Steve Perry. Greg was unhappy with Love Ballads, he left, was replaced with Jonathon Cain from The Babies.
Gregg Rolie (the keyboard player- singer) & Neal Schon (the lead Guitarist) both left Santana where Gregg was the lead singer and Keyboardist to start the band Journey. Listen to Santana's "Black Magic Woman" & "Evil Ways" for Gregg Rolie vocals and keyboards. Gregg left Journey on the second album that Steve Perry was with the band. It was mostly that Gregg didn't want to beat the road as the band was fast becoming a super band, and the dynamics were changing with Steve Perry now being the front man, and that is not the direction Gregg wanted the band to head... It was becoming more of a glam rock band than a more progressive rock band.
Greg Rolie sings and plays the keys. You may remember him when he played keys (and was a founding member) of Santana at Woodstock. He has a great voice that goes well with Steve's.
This early Journey! With original keyboardist Greg Rolie! If you ask me...one of the coolest songs on this album is my favorite..the song DAYDREAM! I just kinda takes you away.
The live version is so much better on their journey Captured Live recording with the Perry vocal runs. This studio version came first. Journey is one of those bands that was so awesome live and often better live than their studio recordings.
Spotify usually has better mixes of these songs, quite often remastered. "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'" should be your next song off this album. A great song for making love to.....
Wow, A Journey song I never heard. But it keeps in line with the early days of the band. Like your analogy of their voices. 🤣 My gosh, Steve Perry always kills it. He, for sure, is the top 3 GOATs!!!! Short Song! That is your signature = 🔥! Whenever i tell Jack i am watching a Premier - he always says, "What song is fire tonight?"... Keep doing what you do!!!!!
Like "Feeling That Way / Anytime" this was another of several Journey tunes where Gregg Rollie and Steve Perry shared lead vocals. However, if you want something of a deep cut (and great tune in my opinion), "People and Places" from the 'Departure' album has the one and only song where Neal Schon shares lead vocals with Steve Perry.
You guys should check out their song, People And Places. It features Neal Schon and Steve Perry together on vocals and it literally takes you on a Journey. It's one of their all time best. It was played a lot on classic rock radio in the 80's.
I think this was the first year Steve Perry was with Journey and then a transition of lead vocals would follow. Greg Rolie stayed around for another year or so and then he left. Greg Rolie and Neil Schon played with Santana before and they founded Journey. Schon was about 16 years old when started with Santana. "Lights" was a big song, "Lovin' Touchin' Feeling", "City of the Angels". If you can find a good quality video of "Dixie Highway" please do a reaction. That is a rockin' song! They didn't record that song, but I think it's only live.
These duet songs were considered very hard to create. Maybe try Patiently or Winds Of March ( ignore the earlier remark when listening to these; these two songs are not duets )
Yeah Gregg Rolie was so great in Journey. His singing with Steve was just simply really good. I’m one of those guys who lost interest in Journey when Gregg decided to retiree
Yes Nick, Lindsay Buckingham is seriously underrated. I suggest you give "Big Love" a listen if you've not heard it. Then watch it live! I feel that Neal Schon definitely got his due recognition back in the day. Compared to Lindsay..Try- "Lights" or "Lovin' Touchin Squeezin" They were pretty big Hits for Journey, though they have plenty more. Thank you Gentlemen, I always look forward to your videos!
Many of us hold a special place for this era of Journey with both Gregg and Steve. The band underwent an even more drastic change when Gregg left and Jonathon Cain replaced him on keys, and the songwriting dynamic with Neil and Jonathan was very different from Neil and Gregg... hence Don't Stop Believing and Who's Crying Now.
I have been a subscriber for a while, check you out most mornings, I was wondering if you guys have ever heard of Tom Waits a very unique artist with a unique voice, also a great actor, he is an artist who has two different careers in music from 1973 to 1984 he was a bluesy paino playing songwriter, then he changed direction and became more avant-garde artist. I would love to watch your reaction to either side of his career, old piano stuff, The Piano has been drinking, Tom Traubert's Blues, On the Nickel, Ruby's Arms, Grapefruit Moon, Ol' 55 (a hit for the Eagles) and of the new stuff, Chocolate Jesus, Singapore, Clap hands, Downtown Train (a hit for Rod Stewart) Goin' Out West, The Earth Died Screaming (featured in the movie twelve monkeys) Swordfishtrombones, Shore leave, Time. pick anything and be amazed.
There are still quite a few people out there that don't realize that Greg was Journey's original lead singer, that Steve didn't come along till later, Greg is a great singer in his own right BUT compared to Steve, well it's like putting a Pinto next to a Top fuel Dragster at the strip, the Pinto's gonna lose and unfortunately in this instance Greg is the Pinto. ("Hopelessly in love/The party's over " is another great one by Journey BTW lol. Oh, one more thing, I don't know what part of Louisville y'all are from, but I'm from Valley Station 🤪)
An out of left field suggestion for an early 70s song I think you'll enjoy - Jump Into The Fire by Harry Nilsson. Funky, amazing bass. I think it's been in some movie soundtracks - you will no doubt know which ones once you hear it.
The most successful album up to this time for them for sure, but Frontiers and Escape both sold over 10 Million and I think Schon posted that Greatest Hits is now over 25 Million... love these guys!
Greatest Hits-755 weeks Billboard 200 albums chart(more than any other compilation album, except BobMarley and the Wailer’s Legend in HISTORY) As of 2023 logged 1,392 weeks on Billboard’s Catalog Albums chart. Certified (RIAA) 15xPlatinum sales of 15M US, 2008 6th highest certified Greatest Hits Package in US only behind collections Eagles,BillyJoel,EltonJ,and the Beatles. Continues today selling 500K Globally per year. Yet…. JMO not given the recognition sooo deserved.
Not their most successful album, but it was their biggest up to that point. Remember that Escape has gone diamond (and that Greatest Hits has sold even more). Anyway, it’s a great album. Check out the song “Daydream,” which really beckons back to their prog rock roots and features an amazing performance by Steve Perry. It also includes the slow R&B-flavored “Sweet and Simple” which is absolutely gorgeous.
In high school we all had the same notebook/folder covered in clear plastic that you could slip picture ect …Anyhoo I was into drawing, oil painting ect so I drew Infinity Album Cover for my notebook…Let’s just say I made a lot of 💰💰💰drawing album covers…Infinity was definitely my biggest seller (Ok MyPotttLeafBig lol) wasn’t a cheap decade for us..albums to 8Trx to cassettes Ohh yeah changing out electronics….buying the same over and over…concert tickets. Gregg Rollie left in 1980, right before they were about to become superstars with the Escape album. They already had a bunch of hits, but he left before the pinnacle. Like Neal Schon, he was a primary member of Santana and left them circa 73 to start Journey
Guys you need to listen to the live recording!, there's a whole concert with this song included. Steve hit higher notes and the guys played faster. Record studios couldn't contain Steve's voice, live is the only way to go
Journey takes me back to high school - great times! You might enjoy Little River Band as well - Cool Change and Lonesome Loser are great songs… just a suggestion. Totally different from Journey, but a good band just the same.
Review "Torn Between Two Lovers" by Mary MacGregor. When recording they couldn't find the right sound for Mary's voice. After hours of recording Mary needed a bathroom break. Producer was walking by bathroom and heard her singing. He stuck his head in the bathroom as said, don't move were bringing you a mike. The rest is history, recorded in the bathroom at a music studio!
If you love Steve then check out Rik Emmett, Never Surrender, A World of Fantasy, Follow Your Heart, Lay It On The Line. Toronto's other 3 member band Triumph.
Aways keep in mind that Don't Look Back the album was unfinished according to Tom Scholz. The record company actually confiscated the work Tom had done even though it wasn't finished. and was planned to have at least 3 more songs. It led to the litigation that Tom eventually won and allowed 3rd Stage to be released. His lawsuit set a precedent that benefited artists from then on. Every song on that album friggin rocks anyway!
Steve was first hired to be the backup singer but they wantedand needed a front man and Steve Perry was perfect. Some of them were hesitant on him though.
I think it's safe to say that this is an under-the-radar song. It is known, for sure. But I don't recall it being played a lot on the radio. I could be wrong. I got away from the radio for a few years back in the 80's. I heard it in the late 80's while jogging. It caught me off guard with it's instant fast-pace beat. The double vocals is a treat. And the guitar solo outro kicks. Or as MOL said, "goes out hard." Good song. Good reaction. Y'all's background -- I'm sure it's been discussed before, but what city landscape is that, if it is one at all? Looks good.
I don't think it's the mix. I think it's simply the huge difference between their voices. Steve has a cleaner voice and clearer, sharper, piercing tone, whereas Gregg has a softer, warmer tone. Bringing Gregg's highs (on the mixer) up too much would make him sound unnatural.
Hey Guys, I'd like to introduce you to another artist. He's a more recent artist and he is reacted to quite frequently here on UA-cam. He does a lot of covers, but he also produces his own stuff. I really enjoy his stuff. I'm curious to see what you fellas think about him. "Marc Broussard - Bring It On Home To Me (Live) (Sam Cooke Cover)"
I think the sound you are having issues with is the production, back then radio was still very important, and , seems to me, everyone wanted that "stadium sound", BIG...had to have some "punch" and with vids coming to the forefront everything got magnified , imho
More Journey Please, Mother, Father, live in Houston. Thanks...
Agree about Schon and Buckingham.
Greg in the bathroom? Easy, biscuit...............LMAO!!!!!!!!!!! Greg's voice is very, very smooth and plaintive. Steve? He's from Heaven as far as I know
Hey guys if you’ve not checked out “Still They Ride” by Journey, I suggest you do so. And I second “Stone In Love”.
More Journey pls 🙏
Great song. Definitely do "Wheel In The Sky," "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'," "Any Way You Want It," "Stone In Love," "Chain Reaction" and "Ask The Lonely."
Love Journey, recommendation of "Stone in Love" it's a spicy! Great reaction!
Love Greg Rollie Journey, "Of A Lifetime".
Please react to Journey “Mother, Father” live in Houston.
Ryan if you like Steve's vocals check out Sweet and Simple, another different sound
You guys are so much fun to watch! If you really want some 🔥🔥🔥🔥try "Mother, Father" from the 1981 Houston concert. It's awesome!
For me, much of the best Journey has both Gregg and Steve. Love this song 💚
Sweet and Simple! Best song in the album
Gregg has a great voice, but Steve has an all-time, exceptional one. Their harmonizing produced some of the best Journey sounds imho.
Agree 100%. Even when I was young I appreciated Gregg and Steve’s voices together. So so good
Great album from start to finish! Wore this album out during high school;)
This was a rock-in album. Check out the song "Lady Luck" from the end of this album
Greg Rollie and Steve Perry, woo hooo!
If you can picture yourself cruising down the highway late at night after a hot summer day, then you have the essence of what this song is ideal for.
Aynsley Dunbar and Steve smith were/were jazz drummers that can play rock. Different styles, but both excellent.
this is my favorite version of Journey.
I love contrasts in music. THe contrast between Rollie and Perry is great IMO
"Sweet and Simple" on this album is perhaps Steve Perry's finest performance. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
Yes!
One of their best songs imo!!!!
Yes yes yes!! Play it please 😊
Absolutely! Nobody can touch that vocal. These guys heads would explode if they reviewed that tune.
Saw this tour 1981 Philly Spectrum. Incredible show . Greg Rollie on keyboards pre Jonathan Cain .

I agree with Stone in Love - amazing song! Please play it the next you visit Journey!! ❤
Amen
Stone in love and Just the same way both my favorites!
Joel, think you misunderstood when he said underrated. His context was as a band member, not as a guitarist. As to Stone in Love, DEFINITELY!

Great review guys! You always crack me up too
I only like Journey with Gregg and Steve...great reaction
Try "sweet and simple"
Both guy's amazing specialy Mr perry still the one the golden voice ever ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
No, do not replace "Fire." It's part of your brand!
You picked a good one! People and places is a killer tune.

his vocal on black magic woman when he was in Santana :)))))))))))))

Neal was touring with Santana when he was 15yrs old. That's how good he is fellas.
It's on the Midnight Special episode too. Fun to see.

Greg wasn't in the bathroom, he double-tracked himself. One of the most accurate double trackers alongside Karen Carpenter.
Great song!
At their best with Greg Rollie

You guys do Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' yet? I just adore that one.
Live in Houston is a great version of this song. Check that out.
The best songs by them are the ones that didn't make airplay. PRECIOUS TIME from departure! Check it out ...it's CODE! LOL
Best Journey album by far...Not a band song on it!
Do next these : "Any way you want it" , "Chain reaction", "People & places" & "Patiently".
I think it is Fire that you guys say Fire. You do what you wanna do. I leave it all up to you. -Sammy Hagar
Please check out Houston live 1981 Mother Father
I like the live version on Captured much better.

In high school the dudes would never let it be known they liked any journey. They were thought as a "chick" band. Side note.
They opened with this song in May 1980, Derby Eve Jam. Great show plus The Baby’s were the opening band and they were really sharp.
78 Was Great!
GREGG WAS great! Perry was pretty good to
Journeys best Rocker By Far!
Which led to Jonathan Cain from the Baby's replacing Gregg when he left...
Steve Smith is a great drummer. Nicknamed The Beast 🙂
He had to dumb it down to play in Journey. Much like Bev Bevan did for ELO.
If you love Steve then check out Rik Emmett, Never Surrender, A World of Fantasy, Follow Your Heart, Lay It On The Line. Toronto's other 3 member band Triumph.
Not WRONG
