  • When Dave Grohl joined Nirvana back in 1990, the band's sound was instantly brought to the next level. While Chad Channing was a good drummer, Kurt had a sound in his head that Chad could simply never bring to life. The band's 1991 breakthrough album Nevermind, along with 1993's In Utero, greatly benefited from Dave Grohl's presence. His significance in the evolution of Nirvana's sound cannot be understated.
But what if Dave never joined the band? Who would've become the new drummer instead of Dave? How would Nirvana's sound have differed? Finally, would the band have found the same level of success? Today's hypothetical scenario answers all of these questions.

I've personally always wondered what would've been, had J macias accepted either of Kurt's offers to join the band & they started writing together...

fun video - I agree that 'Nevermind' wouldn't have been as clean & dynamic - Kris said how Nirvana just became a machine after Dave joined - he also said it was Dave's idea to go quiet for the verses of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' - much of the album was already written - but Dave's drumming added extra power to the songs - his backing vocals were also wonderful - I've no doubt he influenced & shaped the album in his own way - his drumming just made it very fun for Nirvana to just play very loud & very direct 🤟🎶

The nevermind era is kinda incorrect, they had to sign to a major label like DGC to leave sub pop because of the contract Nirvana had with them, they were one of the only (if not the only) bands to get a contract from Sub Pop.

Dave recorded and released ‘Marigold’ in ‘91 well before the Nirvana version.
Considering how common it is for drummers to be the “call girls” of bands (Bye, Alanis), their paths probably would have crossed at one point.
    Fun video. Thanks!

@@billepperson2662 The ‘91 version was recorded back east for what I think was his band at the time, and maybe once after (before the Nirvana era).
That said, I referenced Wikipedia, so it’s a coin toss. :)

@@genghis_connie wait, what? You're telling me there's a separate version besides the '90 home demo & the version released on the "Late!" Record he recorded with Barrett that came out on in 92'?
(Grohl was in scream prior to Nirvana, "Late!" was sorta like a solo record he recorded all the parts for himself & released on a friend's label under a pseudonym, so anyone listening would (hopefully) like or hate it based on it's own merits)...
& Btw, the "sessions history" @ live Nirvana is the more definitive source

@@billepperson2662 no. It was for Late!. I think the 91/92 discrepancy may be recorded vs released.
Anyway, you get the point I was making. And if it was 92, I’m happy to stand corrected.

@@genghis_connie Oh yeah, I get you now. Yeah, of course, Late! Version recorded in 91, released 92... & If you or anyone else reading this hasn't heard it. Check out the alternate takes of the in utero version from 93' that just surfaced a few years back. There were 2 takes w/ Kurt playing drums & others including a cello part that was never used (the performer couldn't figure out the key, because of the chromaticism in the verses!). They're pretty neat, the "lullaby" organ jam also surfaced from those tapes

in bloom was actually chads drumming on nevermind

Yeah, he doesn’t get enough credit for In Bloom. Definitely one of Nirvana’s most memorable songs in terms of drums. Chad laid the foundation but Dave’s execution made it iconic

Its said that Kurt wanted Dave out of Nirvana around the In Utero period. Glad it didnt happen cuz it wouldve been real foolish to do so.

If this was the case then Nirvana would not be my 2nd favorite Band of all time. The title of 2nd favortie band of all time would go to Queen. Maybe Pearl Jam would have been the best Grunge band of all time idk. Fun video to watch whatsoever.
Also, wonder what happens to Pat Smear if Dave never joined

    • @TheMusicNarrative
      @TheMusicNarrative  Місяць тому +1

I don't think Pat would've joined, that's why I didn't mention him. I could see Dave and Pat still being together in their own band (possibly Foo Fighters) outside of Nirvana, but who knows. Anyways thanks for watching man!

I’d like to think the remaining members of Meat Puppets and m a y b e The Germs would somehow weave together with Pat and Dave.
